Bowler Ashish Nehra to retire on November 1
Agencies
HYDERABAD: Veteran
India pacer Ashish Nehra
on Thursday said he will
call an end to his cricket
career after the first Twenty20
International (T20I)
against New Zealand at
the Feroz Shah Kotla in
Delhi on November 1.
"I have spoken to the
team management and
the selection committee
(about retiring). The game
against New Zealand is in
Delhi so you can't get better
than that when you retire
in front of your home
crowd," the 38-year-old
said at a press conference
ahead of the third T20I
against Australia here.
"It is always better to
retire when people are
saying why rather than
why not. I always wanted
to retire on a high," he
added.
"I think Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar
Kumar) and
(Jasprit) Bumrah are doing
really well. And that
this is the way forward for
me."
Nehra is currently
part of three-match T20I
series against Australia
but he didn't feature in the
first two matches.
Nehra has so far played
17 Tests (44 wickets), 120
One-Day Internationals
(157 wickets) and 26 T20Is
(34 wickets) for the country.
He was part of the Indian
squad which won the
2011 Cricket World Cup at
home.
He was also a member
of the Indian squad
that finished runners-up
to Australia in the 2003
World Cup.
Nehra, who made his
debut in 1999, said that he
is also done with his Indian
Premier League (IPL)
career.
"There will be a gap of
five months between the
next edition of IPL and
November. So I can easily
play in IPL. But I train
only to play for India and
once I retire from international
cricket, I will not
play in the IPL as well,"
the left-armer said.
FIFA kicks out Pakistan over
‘third-party interference
Agencies
ZURICH: FIFA on Wednesday suspended the Pakistan
Football Federation (PFF) on account of undue thirdparty
interference.
"The Bureau took this decision as a result of the fact
that the PFF offices and its accounts remain in control of
a court-appointed administrator, which constitutes a violation
of the PFF obligations to manage its affairs independently
and without influence from any third parties
in accordance with the FIFA Statutes," the world football
governing body said in a statement.
"The suspension will be lifted once the PFF offices
and access to the PFF accounts are returned to the PFF,"
the statement added. Following its suspension, the PFF
loses all its membership rights as defined in article 13
of the FIFA Statutes. The PFF representative and club
teams are no longer entitled to take part in international
competitions until the suspension is lifted.
The suspension also means that neither the PFF nor
any of its members or officials may benefit from any development
programmes, courses or training from FIFA
or the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Moreover, and in accordance with Article 16 Paragraph
3 of the FIFA Statutes, other member associations
may not entertain sporting contact with the PFF during
its suspension.
Over: India fail to win even one
match in football U-17 World Cup
Indo-Asian News Service
NEW DELHI: India ended
their campaign on a poor
note, suffering a heavy 0-4
defeat to Ghana in their
last Group A match of the
FIFA U-17 World Cup here
on Thursday.
Ghana skipper Eric
Ayiah (43rd, 52nd minutes)
struck a brace, bulging
the net on either side
of the break before Richard
Danso (86th) and Emmanuel
Toku (87th) scored
in quick succession towards
the end.
Ghana finished the
group stage with six
points from three matches.
They took the top spot
in the group due to a superior
goal difference ahead
of the US and Colombia
who also finished with six
points each. India ended
their maiden appearance
at a football World Cup
in any age group without
opening their account and
only one goal to show for
their efforts. Ghana dominated
right from the start
but were held at bay by
some tough, stubborn defending
by the Indians.
The home team however,
ran out of ideas in
the final third, showing a
distinct lack of composure
when in possession and
committed a lot of missed
passes and errors as a result,
losing the ball easily.
Lack of combination
and poor awareness upfront
repeatedly saw Indian
players in possession
but with no team mates in
good positions to pass to.
Their job was made
even tougher by a wellorganised
Ghana defence
which allowed them very
little time and space,
while showcasing excellent
skills, tactical awareness
and athletic ability.
Ghana right winger
Sadiq Ibrahim was a constant
threat down the
flanks with his speed and
accurate balls into the Indian
penalty box.
Rashid Alhassan was
also excellent on the left
wing and Ayiah in the centre
had a constant stream
of excellent passes and
crosses as he used his superb
technique and dribbling
skills to trouble the
Indian defence.
Only some desperate
defending by the hosts
prevented them from conceding
more goals.
Central defenders
Anwar Ali and Jitendra
Singh put in a tireless performance
for India.
Hockey: India aim to outplay Bangladesh in Asia Cup
Agencies
DHAKA: After a dominant
performance against
Japan in their campaign
at the Hero Asia Cup, the
India hockey team, led by
Manpreet Singh, will take
on hosts Bangladesh in
their next Pool A encounter
here on Friday.
Apart from an initial
set back when Japan equalised
in the fourth minute,
India sailed through the
match improvising their
game hooter-to-hooter
and rarely ever stumbled
against the Japanese counter-attack.
"Yes, we are good with
our counter-attacks but
India just proved to be
very fast for us in the end.
I was happy with how our
boys kept up the first two
quarters but India stayed
fast-paced throughout the
game and they are a very
very fit team," pointed out
Japanese national coach
Siegfried Aikman.
On Friday, the Indian
team will look to carrying
forward their sublime
form and build on the confidence
they have gained
from a fine start to the
tournament when they
take on Bangladesh.
"As a coach, I am always
critical so I have to
say I am not 100 per cent
happy with how we played.
I believe we can do better
but this was our first
match and now that the
team is done with shaking
off the initial jitters, I
think we can focus on improved
performance in the
next game," stated India's
Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne.
The match against
Japan saw India's experienced
Sardar Singh play a
role as freeman defender.
He was commanding in
the position, steering the
game from the back, giving
enough room for defender
Harmanpreet Singh
to make the long runs in
the midfield. Which also
worked well as he assisted
forward Lalit Upadhyay
with a long scoop that was
brilliantly struck into the
post earning India's second
goal.
"I think Sardar is very
good in that position. We
have played many practice
matches before we came
here where he played fullback.
He is accurate with
his long passes and he
can guide the team in the
front. This is working well
for us," expressed skipper
Manpreet on his compatriot's
role as a freeman
defender.
