The Inkling Volume 1

Sports can often be dismissed as competitive people running
around trying to prove that they are better than each other,
and I can understand why people think that. But I would
argue that sports can be so much more.
Sports can unify, inspire and change people’s lives in so
many positive ways. Take the recent Invictus Games as a
perfect example. Armed services personnel who have been
wounded can use sport as a way to pull themselves through
tough times and come out stronger: the word ‘Invictus’ itself
is Latin for ‘unconquered and undefeated’. Although the
athletes are competitive and want to win, they still all stand
together. This was demonstrated when the American
swimmer Tiana Lopez was cheered to the finish line by her
fellow swimmers (who had already finished the race), thus
showcasing the immense power sport holds.
Sport can be escapism from some of the horrors shown by
modern society. It can be what you hold on to when going
through tough times; it can be a chance to push yourself
further than you have gone before; it can be a chance to
make new best friends that will be there with you for your
whole life. It can be all of these things…
Or it could just be a chance for you to have some fun.
In this section you will see people talk about sports events all
the way up from local matches to the biggest events in the
sporting world, such as The Olympics or Football World Cup.
There will be sections introducing you to sports you may be
unfamiliar with, and even articles about equality and the
politics that are involved in all games. There will something
for everyone in this section: whether you’re a diehard sports
fan or someone couldn’t care less about who wins what,
there will be an article for you.
Sport can be anything you want it to be for you. And that’s
why I love it.
