Leeds United 1970-71 A Season in Brief DIVISION ONE Preview After the heartbreak of the previous season, could Revie lift the spirits of the players? Once more no additions to the team were made, although soon the manager could be faced with replacing Jack Charlton, who was beginning to be more susceptible to injury. Missing, was Albert Johannsen who had left to join York City. The Season Any thoughts of a hangover were immediately dispelled as United started off like an express train, with six wins out of seven. Even a first round exit away at Sheffield United in the League Cup might prove to be a blessing in disguise. The first league defeat came 3-0 away at Stoke City, before the team embarked on another unbeaten run of sixteen games. Despite this one result, the defence was on top form, eleven clean sheets in the first fourteen games proved this. Leeds again had European football to look forward to, back in the Inter Cities Cup (ICFC) where they had enjoyed great success. Easily getting past Sarpsborg from Norway in the first round, they had to rely on the ‘away goals’ rule to progress at the expense of Dynamo Dresden. A 9-2 aggregate victory over Sparta Prague, and with the team also three points clear in the league at the turn of the year, was a fine riposte to those who thought that the club’s spirit might have been broken by events of the previous season. Old boy Bobby Collins, who was now playing in Scotland for Morton, did the 126 /((’681,7(’ club a good turn when he recommended a young Joe Jordan who was playing alongside him, Revie snapped up a real bargain when he signed him for only £15,000. United were once more helped by favourable draws in the FA Cup, first up were Rotherham, although this went to a replay, followed by Swindon who were easily brushed aside 4-0. Next up were Colchester United of Division Four at Layer Road. It turned out to be one of the biggest shocks ever in the history of the tournament and was captured for posterity by the presence of the ‘Match of the Day’ cameras. Veteran ex-England striker Ray Crawford with two goals and another from Dave Simmons gave the home team a three goal lead, before United finally got their game together and pulled two back, but were unable to level the game. Although it was a shock, United still led the league by three points and did in fact win four straight games afterwards, they also had a winnable ICFC game against Setubal from Portugal to come. Although it was a tight encounter Leeds progressed to set up a mouth watering clash with Liverpool in the semi-final of this competition. Defeat at Chelsea, whilst Arsenal were playing an FA Cup semi-final, still left United six points clear, but they had played three games more. After both teams chasing the title picked up further wins, Leeds conceded that advantage when they drew two games, allowing the Gunners to narrow the gap to only two points. All eyes now turned to Anfield for the ICFC first leg. Don Revie decided to bring back Bremner despite his skipper only playing 25 minutes of first team football in three months. Once more he didn’t let his manager down, striking the only goal of the game in the second half, to give them not only a victory, but an away goal. The home game against West Brom has gone down in history as the most infamous played at Elland Road and even now is still the subject of much anger. Already 1-0 down in the game, Leeds were pushing forward in the second half, when an intercepted pass from Hunter, deflected to Tony Brown, he momentarily stopped, waiting for the referee to award offside against Colin Suggett, but when the whistle did not sound, he continued, before squaring the ball for Jeff Astle to score. All hell broke loose, the goal should not have stood, but the sight of elderly grown men racing on to the pitch to remonstrate with the referee was a sad sight. Despite pulling a goal back, the 2-1 defeat severely damaged Leeds hopes of regaining the title. Some hope was restored when Arsenal were beaten at Elland Road, quickly followed by a superb draw against Liverpool in the ICFC semi final second leg, which meant that Leeds had a final against Juventus to look forward to. After completing the season with a 2-0 win against Forest, Leeds had to wait until the Monday to see if they would be crowned champions. Arsenal needed a win or a goalless draw from their fixture with Spurs, anything else would hand it to Leeds. As the game looked certain to finish in stalemate, Ray Kennedy headed home in the 89th minute to ensure the title for Arsenal. There were twenty seven days before the two legged final against Juventus, many players went off on international duty before coming back to prepare for the game. The away leg was a hard fought 2-2 draw and another draw, this time 1-1 at Elland Road, meant that Leeds were victorious, but only on away goals. Postscript Thank goodness for the Fairs Cup, as another season almost ended in disappointment. What was the reason that Leeds so often failed to get over the line? Was the manager over cautious? Or was it just bad luck.
