Leeds United 1967-68 A Season in Brief DIVISION ONE The Inter Cities Fairs Cup Final Held over from the previous season, the Zagreb game ended in a disappointing 2-0 aggregate defeat. The manager was criticised for a defensive approach in the second leg, despite already being two goals down. Preview Chairman Harry Reynolds was forced to retire due to ill health, Don Revie had now lost his number one supporter on the board. Despite again searching far and wide, the troublesome centre forward spot had still not been filled, five different players were tried in the number nine shirt early in the season. So despite the club announcing a profit, supporters were left frustrated at the lack of transfer activity. The Season The club made their worst start in years, one point from the first three games, but a stronger autumn campaign saw them move up the table, culminating in a 7-0 demolition of Chelsea. By now Leeds had made the major signing fans had been calling out for, smashing their transfer record with the £100,000 purchase of centre forward Mick Jones from Sheffield United. Jones was a Revie type of player, he could score goals, but he was adept at holding the ball up and brave as a lion, allowing other players to flourish. The club practically balanced the books by selling Willie Bell to Leicester and Alan 62 /((’681,7(’ Peacock to Plymouth. At the turn of the year, the team were lying in third place and had also reached the semi-final of the League Cup. The 5-0 defeat of Fulham at Craven Cottage on the 6th January was described as the club’s most complete performance in living memory. Derby County were duly despatched in the League Cup and also in the FA Cup, Don Revie quickly putting the young upstart Derby manager, Brian Clough in his place. The season was beginning to look like it could be amazing, with one final already booked, they also fought their way through to the FA Cup semi-final where they would meet Everton, made progress in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup (ICFC) once more and remarkably went top of the table after drawing at Chelsea. Leeds United’s opponents in the League Cup final were to be Arsenal. United were desperate to win a trophy and despite Revie’s protestations that they were going to entertain, nobody really believed that. After taking the lead through a superb 18th minute volley from Terry Cooper, Leeds slipped into a containing strategy and had little difficulty in keeping the Gunners at bay. At last Bremner had his hands on a trophy. There was criticism from some in the media, but who cared? The run to another ICFC Final saw United face successive games against three Scottish clubs, Hibernian, Rangers and Dundee. All of these were tight nervous affairs, the Rangers’ ties were played out before an aggregate crowd of over 130,000 spectators. Once again the competition had overrun and the final would not be played until the following August, with Ferencvaros the opponents. However there was disappointment in the FA Cup, bowing out to Everton in the semi-final played at Old Trafford, a rough game at times, was settled by a Morrissey penalty after Charlton had handled. There was still an outside chance of taking the title, but fatigue was setting in, the team played sixty six games this season. In the end they fell short by five points, finishing fourth behind winners Manchester City. Only one point was taken from the last four games of the season. Postscript Two trophies collected in one season would be enough for most managers, but Don Revie wanted the ‘big one’, the championship. The older players had by now been mostly moved on, allowing the youngsters more playing time and with another year’s experience under their belts, confidence was especially high for the next season. One thing did concern the players, sometimes they gave the opposition too much respect and were too cautious. Would this change now that they had shown they knew how to win? New on the scene Terry Yorath who was to become a much valued squad member made his debut, joining the ranks of the seemingly never ending production line of new talent emerging at Elland Road.
