Leeds United 1972-73 A Season in Brief DIVISION ONE Preview Don Revie moved to sign Trevor Cherry from Huddersfield for a fee of £100,000. Originally signed as a full back, his long term future was seen as a centre back. Then after he was rebuffed in an attempt to sign Gordon McQueen from St Mirren, Revie returned to Huddersfield once more, to sign their twenty nine year old centre back Roy Ellam. He finally captured McQueen in September for only £30,000. The Season Due to suspensions, Cherry and Ellam were the centre back partnership for the opening fixture at Chelsea. It couldn’t have gone worse, the 4-0 drubbing was their worst opening day defeat in memory. There were mitigating circumstances though, both Harvey and Jones were injured during the first half, Lorimer went in goal for the remaining sixty five minutes. After one game, Ellam was unceremoniously dropped for Jack Charlton. Putting that opening day horror show behind them, four wins and two draws put Leeds a couple of points off the top and four goals were rattled past Burnley in the League Cup. After the Wembley success, they were entered into the European Cup Winners’ Cup (ECWC) and were drawn against Ankaraguku of Turkey in the first round. A 1-1 draw in Turkey was a tetchy affair, played out on a hard and dusty pitch. Leeds were expected to progress easily, but in the end were grateful to a goal from 170 /((’681,7(’ Jones for a 2-1 aggregate win. Derby manager Brian Clough had become the clubs number one critic, so there was particular satisfaction when they were thumped 5-0, courtesy of two fantastic long range strikes from Johnny Giles. In the ECWC, Carl Zeiss Jena from East Germany were brushed aside 2-0 on aggregate, but there was disappointment in the League Cup,when they went out to fierce rivals Liverpool in a replay, after drawing 2-2 draw at Anfield. A solid run of league results saw Leeds firmly in third place, just a couple of points off the top when the quest to retain the FA Cup began. It took three games to dispose of Norwich, followed by routine wins against Plymouth, West Brom and Derby, setting up a semi-final with Wolves. Rapid Bucharest were blown away 8-1 on aggregate when the ECWC began again, then Hadjuk Split provided sterner opposition but still couldn’t stop Leeds progressing through to the final and a match against AC Milan to be held in Salonika, Greece. In the league, Liverpool always managed to keep themselves a few points clear of United as they chased the title, but after defeating Wolves in the FA Cup semi-final, another trip to Wembley was confirmed, against surprise finalists Sunderland. Frank Gray, the younger brother of Eddie, took over the number eleven shirt when he made a winning debut against Crystal Palace and amazingly this result, coupled with dropped points for Liverpool, meant that the Monday clash between the two clubs had become vital again. If Leeds could win, they would only be four points behind with two games in hand and with a superior goal difference. Unfortunately Liverpool were resolute and fully deserved their 2-0 win. On paper, the Cup final against Sunderland looked a mismatch. A real David and Goliath contest. There was added spice to the fixture with the history of bad blood between the two managers. Sunderland approached the game in a carefree manner, they had nothing to lose, whilst it appeared the role as short odds favourites weighed heavily on the Leeds players. It turned out to be a fascinating final, Leeds although nowhere near their best were denied by several wonder saves from Jim Montgomery, but the 1-0 loss was still hard to take. After fighting for trophies on three fronts, only one chance now remained, the ECWC final against Milan. The build up to the match was overshadowed when news broke that Don Revie had held talks with Everton and was to leave after the final. On top of all this, it was revealed years later that the referee Christos Michas had been bribed by the Italians, so in truth there was no shame in a weakened team going down 1-0. Postscript The disappointing end to the season, no doubt contributed to Don Revie’s thoughts about leaving. On the verge of a possible treble, they ended the season without a trophy. Once again it would need enormous character to bounce back from this.
