RMC Sheriff Darren Atha
Speaks to Chamber
The Roger Mills County Sheriff,
Darren Atha, spoke to the Roger
Mills Chamber this past week at
its monthly Thursday meeting.
Sheriff Atha began by expressing
concern about the impact of the
law change which reduced many
drug possession felonies to misdemeanors.
“It has had a demoralizing
effect on many in law enforcement,
and how it will affect drug use and
drug crimes in the future are hard
to know.” Atha explained that he
started out as a drug interdiction
officer, and that one of the important
tools that they had was to “flip”
someone caught with a felony drug
possession to work as an informant.
Since a felony carried prison time
many chose to become an informant
over the prospect of prosecution for
such a serious charge. Now, since
July 1 of this year, there is little
incentive to become an informant
since all drug possession crimes only
carry a maximum fine of $1000 and
up to 1 year in the county jail. Atha
explained that the drug problem
must be addressed not only from
the criminal justice side but also
from the treatment perspective, and
unfortunately in this state treatment
resources are woefully inadequate.
Sheriff Atha expresses concern over
the fact that Hammon lacks a police
department or even a town officer.
“And while we do our very best to
cover all areas of the county, still
our county has 1100 square miles
and the ideal situation is to have
a town officer right there in each
community.”
Atha closed by saying that, “All
of the officers in my department
and, me included, grew up here
and know the citizens of this community.
We strive to achieve the
highest level of professionalism,
and because we know all of our
constituents, we care deeply about
each person that we serve. We are
proud to serve this community and
my door always open if you have
suggestions or concerns.”
METCALFE MUSEUM
Roger & Lloydelle Lester
Starting today there will be a lot
going on concerning our art competition
here at the Metcalfe Museum.
Art Instructors will be bringing
entries as early as today. Art is due
on Thursday, October, 19 by 5:00
pm. It will be a busy time here until
November 2, the day of our awards
ceremony. After all the entries are
in, the art will be sorted into categories
of first grades 5 through 7 then
8-12. At that time the art is placed
into topics of Pioneer Life or Flora
and Fauna. There are eight media
choices as well as miscellaneous,
fabric or collage. Each entry will
be tagged with all that information
for the judge, except the students
name and school which appears on
the back of the piece.
Our judge this year is Joe London
of Weatherford. He will be
reviewing each piece of art on
Thursday, October 26. At that time
he will select 1st, 2nd, 3rd winners
and Best of Show. Honorary Mention
will also be awarded. Monetary,
ribbons and plaques will be given
out the day of the awards ceremony
starting at 10:00 am in our Metcalfe
Arts and Events Center.
Metcalfe Museum Board Members,
Staff and Volunteers are all
involved in making sure the art
competition is ready for our students,
art instructors and guests on
awards day. We strive each year to
CLOTHES CLOSET
Mary Burrows
What a wild weekend at the
Clothes Closet. We had a lot of
help during the takedown phase and
we were through by the evening.
However, for the rehanging process,
no extra help showed up. Guess we
worked them too hard. Us regulars
worked through the weekend, except
for Sunday and have enough on the
racks to open on Tuesday. Thanks
to everyone that helped in any way.
We have decided not to raise any
prices and will keep our normal
hours. We will be open from 11 to
3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Food distribution will also continue
the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of
each month.
Looking forward to seeing you
on Tuesday and hope all had a great
weekend. Sorry, too busy to write
anymore.
God bless us all and God bless
America.
from our community attending the
Leedey school's 100-year celebration
and alumni banquet. Karen's family
had one of the floats in the parade
Saturday morning.
DURHAM
Karen Harman
Mama and I went to Cheyenne
on Tuesday and shopped. It's fun
to see your neighbors that you don't
see very often that only live a few
miles from you and see them in the
grocery store and have a nice visit.
We agreed it was so nice to have
a clean, well-stocked and friendly
place so close to home. But the most
important thing is Blue Bunny Vanilla
Ice Cream. It makes everyone
at my house very very happy.
The Bees had sew day on Thursday.
Some quilted, some sewed,
some crocheted, some visited but
it was a really fun day. Barbara
Hawkins gave a very informative
lesson that she unfortunately had
learned the hard way. The new
fabrics are supposed to be colorfast
and the quilters have quit washing
their fabrics before they use them.
Barbara had made a veterans quilt
for the guild she belongs to and
one of the stipulations is to wash it
before presentation. As she took it
out of the washer she noticed that
the white fabric was a faint shade
of pink. After many soakings with
Dawn dishwashing detergent, color
catchers, and OxiClean she finally
restored it to its original state.
Enjoying the day were Linda
Shaw, Janet Malson, Janna Montgomery,
Pat Collins, Barbara Hawkins,
Karen Harman, Donna Manhart
and our newest member, Beth
Milner. Visiting in the afternoon was
Frankie Cockrell.
The Church of Christ reported a
very good crowd. Mike Flynn who
has had some health problems was
able to attend.
Thoral and Linda Shaw were glad
to have as Sunday dinner guests,
Johnnie, Merlene, Taylor, Heather
and Wiley Shaw.
Donnie and Grace Chappell had
as weekend guests, granddaughter
and family, Laci, Jaxon, and Madison
Lane.
Lucille Porter has been sick. She
missed sew day and church and
I hate to call her but hope she's
feeling better.
Donnie York has been given a
clean bill of health from his recent
bout with cancer. He and JoNell
both send their thanks for all the
answered prayers in their behalf.
Clayton Manhart visited his
mother, Donna Manhart on Sunday
afternoon. Clayton missed seeing
Mel as he had been to the farm
earlier in the week.
Daren, Dason and Kynsli Harman
visited the Harmans on Sunday
afternoon. As usual Daren didn't
get to relax, he worked on fixing a
faucet in the pasture that the cows
had broken off. Kristi was at work
and we missed her.
We have had winter, summer, and
fall weather all this week. Maybe it
will be monsoon season this week
and no hurricanes. It's only nine
weeks until Christmas and five until
Thanksgiving. Time sure is flying by!
CRAWFORD
Sue Pearson
The Church at Crawford is busy
making preparations for the Fall
Revival November 5-9. My former
pastor, Bro. Bob Miller of Amarillo,
Texas and the much loved Purcy
Walker will lead the services. A meal
will be served each evening at 6:00
PM with services at 7:00 PM. Please
make plans to attend.
The church kids, along with the
children’s Sunday School leaders,
held a cleanup day October 14th.
They worked hard and did a fabulous
job, especially in the storage
room. How we appreciate the children
at Magnolia Baptist Church.
Their enthusiasm is contagious. The
kids were treated to a pizza party
after an afternoon of labor.
Aren’t the changing fall colors
gorgeous? As I drive, I praise God
for His artistic touch. I hope you
took time to observe the beautiful
pink western sky Sunday evening.
The Crawford Quilters finished
the National Park Service 150th
Anniversary quilt and the employees
treated us to a fabulous meal
Monday. We had so much fun
entertaining with the park service
and forest service personnel. We did
miss Sue Flowers who was unable
to attend. The Crawford Dance was
well attended. Reportedly there were
more attendees from surrounding
areas than Roger Mills County folks.
Shame on us!
If you drive down my road this
week you will be able to see my
house. Thank you, Mike Jones, for
mowing my yard.
Do you know what you get if you
cross a red head with a grizzly bear?
I don’t know either, but I doubt
anyone wants to find out.
CHEYENNE
We have had some really hot days
and some really cool ones. Hope
mother nature settles down and
gives us a Fall!
It was great to see the Cheyenne
students cleaning up the town on
Tuesday.
The Cheyenne Cross Country
Girls Team and Colby Perez are
headed to the State Meet this weekend
in Shawnee. Good Luck!!
We send our prayers and get well
wishes to Glen & Frankie Cockrell,
HAMMON
Brenda Archer
Whew this week the temps have
downright chilly in the mornings,
but nice in the afternoon! Fall is
definitely in the air. The leaves
are starting to turn and daylight is
definitely getting shorter! Farmers
are busy sowing wheat and some are
even stripping cotton! Please pray
that God will bless us with some
good moisture throughout the fall
and winter months!
Please remember those who are
sick or shut-in in our community
Issues of Life
Pastor Andy Taylor
“A woman in the city who was a sinner brought an alabaster flask of
fragrant oil and washed Jesus’ feet.” Luke 7:37-38
Jesus was invited to the home of a Pharisee and while He was there a
woman brought and expensive container of fragrant oil and began to wash
His feet. This woman is believed by many Bible scholars to be a servant to
the Pharisee, and probably even a prostitute. The Pharisee ‘spoke’ to himself
saying, “This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner
of woman this is who is touching Him for she is a sinner.” And in his own
condescending way he decided right there that Jesus was an imposter. After
all, the Pharisees were a much higher class of people than this woman and
they would never consider any interaction with a sinner like her.
It’s sad to say but many times the same attitudes prevail today in organized
religion. The religious spirit seeks to elevate us over those who are,
seemingly, hopelessly trapped in sin. But Jesus always had time for sinners
and He always had an abundance of grace. We should take on that exact
same attitude for those who are still in a sinful lifestyle. We should love
them where they are and trust the Father that, that kind of love still has the
supernatural ability to transform lives. And if it weren’t for His immeasurable
grace….we’d still be there!
Leo Napoleon McDaniel
Leo Napoleon McDaniel was
born December 18, 1924 in Cheyenne,
Oklahoma to Henry Alonzo
and Florence Rebecca (Smith)
McDaniel. Leo was the 5th of 6
children born to poor, honest, hardworking
farmers in Oklahoma. At
the age of 16, with only a learner’s
permit, he drove another family
from Oklahoma to California.
Leo had two brothers who lived
in California, so he stayed with
them until the war broke out, at
which time he returned home to
Oklahoma to help his parents on
the farm. He was then drafted into
the US Navy in 1944. Because of his
marksmanship he was assigned to
the Naval Armed Guard as a Naval
Gunner on a merchant ship.
Leo made two trips around the
world, but was thankful his ship
never had to fire upon anyone nor
was his ship fired on. Being in the
Navy afforded Leo opportunities
to visit many countries he wouldn’t
otherwise have been able to. Leo was
honorably discharged from the US
Navy in 1946; at which time he met
Geraldine “Jerri” Wainwright.
Leo and Jerri were married May
28, 1948 in the Presbyterian Church
in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Leo and Jerri were blessed with
three sons; Robert Henry, David
Leo, and Mark Steven. They decided
California was no place to raise
their boys. After visiting Jerri’s uncle
in Redding, Iowa, they decided to
move back to the Midwest purchasing
a farm and moving to the
Redding area in February 1962.
In 1983, Leo and Jerri decided
Iowa winters were just too cold for
them so they bought a RV and started
going to the Valley in Mission,
Texas for the winters. Leo made
over 300 Pegs & Jokers board games;
he loved to dance, bowl, and was a
very sharp card and game player.
You could say Leo never knew a
stranger.
Leo passed away October 2,
2017. He was preceded in death by
his wife, Jerri, on March 17, 2013;
parents; and five siblings.
Awake to Righteousness
Presented by Jonathan Hagar
If you could ask the church
of Christ any question, what
would it be?
Part 120
Baptism, as a necessity for salvation, remains a controversy even to this
day, which means that a dutiful, Bible student must always strive to challenge
their studies on the subject. One such person asked, “Doesn’t John 4:2
mean that Jesus believed baptism wasn’t all that important since He didn’t
see the need to do it for others?” Let us recall John 4:1,2: “When therefore
the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized
more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his
disciples)” (KJV). Jesus and John the Baptist had been teaching repentance
because the kingdom was soon to come (Matt. 3:1). John had prepared
the minds of the faithful Jews before God to accept the coming of God’s
Son, and when Christ arrived, He taught and continued to encourage the
teachings of John. John had been popular with the people (apart from the
Pharisees) and baptized many; however, due to the miracles and superior
wisdom of the Messiah, Jesus obviously attracted more followers than John.
With John, his singular efforts in baptizing the people that came to listen
to his sermons would have been sufficient. With Christ, the crowds grew
so vastly that Jesus delegated immersing people to His apostles while Jesus
continued to preach repentance and the kingdom.
The verse does not imply that Jesus did not consider baptism important
because the example, teachings, and commission of Christ reflects the necessity
of baptism for salvation. The verse simply implies that Jesus knew
how to delegate. Jesus was baptized by John to fulfill prophecy and set an
example before the disciples (Matt. 3:15-17). In the context before the verse
in question, Christ had just finished talking to the Pharisee, Nicodemus,
explaining that baptism was required to enter into the kingdom of God.
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except
a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). In
further explanation Jesus elucidates, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a
man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom
of God” (John 3:5). What had John and Jesus been teaching that involved
water and the Spirit? Christ commanded, “Go ye therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Ghost” (Matt. 28:19). One must be fully buried in water under the
inspired teachings of the Spirit of God (1 Peter 1:22; Rom. 6:3-5). Under
the Christian dispensation, one must believe (John 8:24), repent (Luke 13:3),
confess (Matt. 10:32,33), and be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts
2:38) if one is to be saved. There is no exception (Acts 17:30)! One of the
last words that Jesus expounded to His apostles before His ascension was
“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that
believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be
damned” (Mark 16:16). Clearly, Christ considered baptism important if He
commanded the immersion as necessary to “be saved.” He further confirmed
that those who refuse to believe such would “be damned.” Baptism
remains necessary for salvation to this day (1 Peter 3:21).
Mary Lou Barnard
Mary Lou (Ferrell) Barnard was
the first-born child of Felix Ferrell
and Juanita (Fawver) Ferrell on October
13, 1946, at their home east of
Rhea, Oklahoma. Mary Lou grew
up on the family farm near Rhea.
She grew up attending the Leedey
Church of Christ where she was
baptized in her teens. She was baptized
one Sunday evening when her
parents were not in attendance. She
attended school in Leedey where she
graduated in 1964.
On November 4, 1964, she married
Eddie Barnard in her childhood
home near Rhea. Two children
were born to this union; Monica
Dawn & Jackie Charlene. During
their marriage they lived in Clinton,
Bessie, Leedey, Follett, and Aledo
before moving back to Leedey for
good in 1970. In the late 90’s friends
had a big work day to help finish the
remodeling of their current home
south of town.
She worked as a beautician early
in her marriage. She retired from the
profession she loved when she was
diagnosed with arthritis in the early
70’s. Mary Lou helped Eddie with
farm work. She was especially fond
of helping with the cattle and riding
her horses. She had a special gift
that couldn’t be learned or taught
when it came to training and riding
horses. She trained more great barrel
horses than could be counted.
Mary Lou, Eddie, their two kids,
and all 9 grandkids were fortunate
enough to get to ride horses she
helped train.
In high school, Mary Lou played
basketball on a state qualifying team
for the Leedey Bison. She loved to
watch her kids and eventually her
grandkids wear the green and white,
even when it was baseball. She was
an accomplished seamstress. She
made clothes for all of her family
until her health would no longer
allow it. She then started making
quilts. Her all-time favorite pastime
was riding her horses. She spent
countless hours in the arena trying
to pass her knowledge down to the
kids and grandkids. She truly loved
watching all kids compete, especially
when they were riding one of her
horses!
Mary Lou passed away in her
home on October 15, 2017. She was
preceded in death by her parents, a
sister, Anna Lee Ferrell and brother
in-law, Lyle Barnard.
Cherishing the memories are husband,
Eddie of the home, daughter
Monica Collins and husband Mark
of Leedey, daughter Jackie Price &
Vic Perrin of Leedey, grandchildren
Erin Price & Todd Fason, Elli & Ty
Batie, Ethan Price, Ean Price, Tyler
Price, Jake Price, Bailey Price, Baili
Collins & Quincy Collins. Her sister
Marilyn Moseley & husband Ronny.
Sister in-law Judy Barnard as well
as nieces, nephews, cousins, other
relatives and numerous friends.
Resident
Rights of Long
Term Facilities
By Gail Wilcox, SWODA Ombudsman
-- Individuals moving to
long-term care facilities need to
know their rights including admission,
living in the facility and discharge.
Resident Rights include such
opportunities as voting privileges,
individualized care, respect, dignity,
the right to visitation, the right to
privacy, the right to complain and
the right to made independent
choices.
The U.S. Congress recognized
long-term facility residents are
more vulnerable than those who live
independently. In 1987, Congress
passed The Nursing Home Reform
Act giving nursing home residents
additional legal protections including
Resident Rights. In 1995, the
Resident Rights extended to otherlLong-term
care facilities, boarding
homes, adult family homes and state
operated veterans’ homes.
When the rights are of concern
or violated, the resident’s advocate
can pursue the following options:
Talk directly to facility staff
File a written grievance with the
facility
Voice your concern and get
support at a Resident Council
meeting
Call the area Ombudsman Supervisor
for advice and/or assistance in
resolvement
Call the DHSS Complaint Hotline
(800-562-6078) to report your
concern.
Younger Hunters Get Earliest Opportunity
with Firearms During Youth Deer Season
Oklahoma’s archery hunters
have had the chance to hunt deer
since Oct. 1. But the first chance to
harvest a deer with firearms belongs
to the state’s youth hunters on Oct.
20-22.
The Youth Deer Gun Season is
open to hunters age 17 and younger
who are accompanied in the field
by an adult at least 18 years old
who is hunter education certified
or exempt. The adult may archery
hunt while accompanying the youth,
but the adult may not hunt with a
firearm.
“As wildlife managers, we try to
give the most opportunity possible,
and the youth season focuses on just
that,” said Dallas Barber, big game
biologist for the Oklahoma Department
of Wildlife Conservation. “We
get the chance to introduce new
young hunters to something that
we as biologists and managers are
passionate about.”
The three-day Youth Deer Gun
Season allows participants to take
either a buck and a doe, or two does.
A deer license is required for each
deer hunted.
Barber said this earlier season
gets youngsters in the woods during
a time when the weather is usually
warmer than during traditional Deer
Gun Season, which often creates a
better hunting experience for them.
“This is one of my favorite times
of the year,” he said. “If we can
turn one of our youth hunters into
a lifelong outdoorsman or woman,
then the youth season is more than
worth it.”
Bucks should still be following
a pattern if weather conditions remain
stable. “However, if we get a
nice cold front coming through, we
could see more deer movement,”
Barber said.
As a bonus, youth deer hunters
may also harvest a turkey in counties
that have a fall gun turkey season,
provided the hunter has the appropriate
turkey license.
OKLAHOMA – Television
viewers in nine Western Oklahoma
counties who use an antenna to get
their signal will need to rescan their
channel lineup starting Oct. 16 to
continue receiving a signal. This is
part of the overall station repack
that was ordered by the federal
government.
Viewers will be affected in the
following areas: Ellis, Roger Mills,
Custer, Washita, Beckham, Greer,
Harmon and parts of Blaine and
Caddo counties.
A channel rescan is done by accessing
your television or convertor
box menu. Full rescan instructions
can be found at www.rescanoklahoma.com.
Upon rescanning, viewers will
notice that their signal will not
be in high definition. This will be
temporary and will be resolved by
another rescan once new equipment
is installed.
Channels received after the rescan
will be:
• KFOR 4.1
• KOCO 5.1
Those viewers needing help with
their rescan can call (405) 841-9199
2017 State Testing Results &
College/Career Readiness
Counselor’s Corner by Cassie Romberg
As many of you are probably
already aware, the Oklahoma State
Department of Education has made
some significant changes over the
past few years to standards, assessment,
and accountability measures.
Recently, Oklahoma began teaching
more comprehensive academic standards
that are better aligned with
national benchmarks like the SAT,
ACT, and National Assessment
of Educational Progress (NAEP).
Since new standards were used, a
new assessment plan had to be developed
to measure those standards.
So, in spring of 2017, students took
this new assessment with updated
performance levels. When families
receive their student’s test scores
in November, the performance
levels will be reported as follows:
Advanced, Proficient, Basic, and
Below Basic.
It’s important to keep in mind
that these scores cannot be compared
to years past – this is a total
reset (different standards, different
test). It is also important to note
that changes are continuing to
happen - the 10th grade battery of
tests from last spring has been replaced
by ACT/SAT and a separate
stand-alone science test has been
developed. It may be more accurate
to say that next year will be the total
reset. The OSDE also cautioned
families and schools to not be
disappointed if scores appear to be
lower than in years past. Many states
have gone through this realignment
process and every state saw an initial
significant drop in the number of
students reported as proficient or
advanced.
Having said all that, I would
like to take a minute to brag on
Cheyenne Schools! Though our
proficiency rate did drop as predicted,
we are far above the state
average in almost every area! This
is quite an accomplishment and I
am so proud of the teachers and
students at Cheyenne. We know that
truly preparing kids for college and
career readiness goes far beyond
test scores. Cheyenne students are
prepared for leadership through
organizations such as FFA, BPA,
and PLC. We have had dozens and
dozens of individuals come in and
speak to students about their careers
during our quarterly Career Fair Fridays.
Throughout the year, students
are taking interest inventories and
researching colleges, CareerTech
programs, and post-secondary
training opportunities. This school
has a reputation for excellence and
we will continue on that path to
preparing kids to be college and
career ready.
