more than $20billion in criminal and civil penalties and clean-up costs making <strong>the</strong> settlement <strong>the</strong> largest in corpor<strong>at</strong>e<br />
America.[i] The tragedy was a critical driver in transforming <strong>the</strong> industry’s approach to safety and massively impacted<br />
how subsequent audits <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fshore oil and gas oper<strong>at</strong>ions are conducted.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> afterm<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> Deepw<strong>at</strong>er Horizon, new regul<strong>at</strong>ion such as <strong>the</strong> Safety and Environmental Management System<br />
(SEMS) standard was also introduced. Aimed primarily <strong>at</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ors in <strong>the</strong> Outer Continental Shelf, SEMS comprises<br />
17 elements th<strong>at</strong> companies must address during <strong>the</strong> design, construction, start-up, oper<strong>at</strong>ion, inspection and<br />
maintenance <strong>of</strong> all new and existing facilities. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, it stipul<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> companies must have audits carried out<br />
every three years by independent audit service providers certified by <strong>the</strong> Center for Offshore Safety, r<strong>at</strong>her than conduct<br />
<strong>the</strong>se audits <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r industries have <strong>be</strong>en quick to follow suit and take on board SEMS. The Civil Avi<strong>at</strong>ion Authority and Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Transport have jointly published guidelines for <strong>the</strong> avi<strong>at</strong>ion sector on how to develop a robust security management<br />
system th<strong>at</strong> protects staff and <strong>the</strong> public <strong>at</strong> large.[ii]<br />

So why is this relevant to workforce management? Quite simply, <strong>the</strong> size and complexity <strong>of</strong> engineering projects in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>fshore industry necessit<strong>at</strong>e multiple contractors and teams <strong>of</strong> people loc<strong>at</strong>ed in all corners <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. How do you<br />

Embrace autom<strong>at</strong>ion - while spreadsheets might <strong>be</strong> a gre<strong>at</strong> tool <strong>at</strong> an individual level, <strong>the</strong>y are st<strong>at</strong>ic and<br />
limited in terms <strong>of</strong> scalability. Spreadsheets give everyone <strong>the</strong>ir own version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truth, with complete<br />
autonomy to upd<strong>at</strong>e and amend <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>of</strong>ten as <strong>the</strong>y like, without interference from anyone else. Th<strong>at</strong>’s why<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are popular but dangerous! Too many organiz<strong>at</strong>ions waste significant amounts <strong>of</strong> time, effort and money<br />
by trying to reconcile various documents and systems th<strong>at</strong> hold inaccur<strong>at</strong>e inform<strong>at</strong>ion and merely serve to<br />
perpetu<strong>at</strong>e a siloed approach to resource optimiz<strong>at</strong>ion. It’s time to ditch those spreadsheets and embrace<br />
autom<strong>at</strong>ion to develop, build and maintain an effective and safe workforce. Modern integr<strong>at</strong>ed workforce<br />
