3,305 reasons to
take a close look
at Tyco’s Complete
Security Solution
Tyco’s claim that its ‘Complete Security Solution’ is a game
changer, should not be taken lightly. The company, which
is part of Johnson Controls, has a formidable reputation for
delivering innovative solutions and helps protect 42 per cent
of the companies on the Fortune 500 list and over two million
commercial enterprises worldwide.
There is no shortage of manufacturers who
promote a ‘complete’ or ‘one-stop’ package
and so Roy Cooper decided to find out what
advantages the Tyco Complete Security
Solution might have to offer Professional
Security Magazine’s readers. Who better to
ask than Martin McGrath who has worked
for the company since 2008. In his role as
Distribution and Core Commercial Business
Manager, Martin, pictured, is responsible for
the management of a nationwide pre and post
sales and technical team who all share his
admiration and enthusiasm for the products
and systems available under the Tyco DSC
intruder, Kantech access control and Exacq
video management software (VMS) brands.
Standing out from the crowd
Question: Martin, what makes your Complete
Security Solution different to the many other
‘all-in-one’ integrated electronic security
packages which are available?
Answer: I could boast there are more than
3,305 reasons why it stands out from the
crowd, as this is the number of cameras which
have already been successfully integrated
with our Exacq VMS. These cameras
are manufactured by over 60 different
manufacturers and include older generation
IP network cameras, as well as the very latest
open platform ultra high definition and thermal
imaging models. The thinking behind our
Complete Security Solution is that it must at
all times be easy to install and easy to use.
One of the many ways we achieve this is that
by proactively integrating the 3,305 cameras,
we are significantly reducing the time it takes
to design, implement and commission an
integrated solution. Virtually every camera
model and type currently being installed in
the UK is on the list. We have made it very
easy for a consultant, system designer or
system integrator to quickly establish
via an ‘IP camera integration’ search
tool prominently displayed on the
home page of www.exacq.com, if a
legacy camera or a specific model they
wish to install is on the list. Equally
important, you will also find on the
Exacq VMS home page, a ‘Recorder
Calculator’ which is a valuable tool for
system designers to quickly establish
the network bandwidth necessary to
multi-stream images from the specified
cameras. It is able to provide an
accurate figure as it takes into account
the required frame rates and recording
hours, as well as camera resolution
and the compression
format.
Reducing installation time
and costs
The IP camera integration
and Recorder Calculator
might seem obvious tools
for a manufacturer to
provide, but in our case
considerable effort has
been made to ensure
they offer up-to-date, reallife
practical guidance
to minimise system
design time and negate
the possibility of costly
mistakes being made by
incorrect assumptions
about bandwidth
requirements. Together
with an App which can
be used on any smart mobile device or laptop
which makes it easy for engineers to walk
test cameras, we believe these tools will help
minimise cost by reducing pre-installation, as
well as on-site commissioning time.
Q: Access Control and intruder detection are
also important elements of your Complete
Security Solution. How does this interact with
video surveillance systems managed by the
Exacq VMS?
A: A major advantage of having the Kantech,
DSC and Exacq brands within the Tyco
portfolio is that we have been able to achieve
deep and true integration between our access
control, intruder and video management
product ranges.
Q: What do you mean by ‘deep and true
integration’?
A: Although we have separate product
management and software development
teams for each product range, they have
been working hand in hand to ensure their
respective products and systems fully interact
with all the key features of the other parts
of our Complete Security Solution, and are
backward and forward compatible.
User Friendly
One of the particularly user friendly aspects
of our Complete Security Solution is that
operators can choose the graphical user
interface (GUI) display which is most relevant
to the priorities of their electronic security
