F1 stock car racing
Fast, colourful, spectacular
FORMULA ONE stock car racing is the
most powerful and spectacular shortoval
motorsport racing in Europe.
First raced in Britain in 1955, the cars
have evolved more than 60 years later
into purpose-built, unlimited-powered
racing cars, using Chevrolet V8 engines,
producing up to 750bhp – the same
power as a F1 Grand Prix car.
The cars race anti-clockwise on quartermile
oval circuits on two surfaces, shale
and Tarmac, during a nine-month
season.
F1 stock cars are fast, loud, colourful
and spectacular to watch. With striking
large aerofoils on their roofs to aid a car’s
handling characteristics, F1 stock cars
thunder around the track at speeds of up
to 100mph on a 400 metre oval, and can
drivers are
with the
from March to
across Britain
and Europe
exceed more than 140mph around the
larger oval raceways in mainland
Europe.
There are two key aspects that make
F1 stock car racing stand out from other
forms of motorsport.
The racing is full-contact. The cars are
built to withstand contact, with large front
and rear bumpers and side rails. The
bumpers are used as weapons to move
cars aside, and also act as protection
when the hunter becomes the hunted.
The best drivers start at the back of the
grid. What makes the sport an exciting
spectacle is races are handicapped,
using a colour-coded roof system, with
the best drivers starting at the back of the
grid.
