HOLIDAY CELEBRATION & BOAT PARADE 2017
Pirate ships, Santa’s sleigh and a ‘57 Chevy - these are all themes that
Grayson Lakes’ pontoon boats have embraced throughout the years
during the annual holiday boat parade. This year’s lighted boat parade
will follow the subdivision’s annual holiday celebration in and around
the Recreation Center on Sunday, December 3 rd .
The Holiday Celebration will be held from 3:30-5:30 PM and the boat
parade will follow. Boats will gather at 5:45 PM in the Lake Grayson Cove
and begin parading at 6 PM when it starts getting dark.
Residents will be able to view the parade from a variety of spots - backyards
facing the lake, the tennis court area, the Lake Grayson Drive dock
and the Recreation Center area. Typically, it takes the boats about an
hour to circle the entire lake and all its coves.
We need boat owners who are willing to participate in this event.
Please contact either Susan Raia at susan@raiafamily.com or Pam
Alloway-Mueller at tompam1@aol.com if you would like to participate
or have a question.
This event marks a unique aspect of our neighborhood. We hope to
see you there!!
Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog
FALL LAWN CARE - QUICK TIP!
Fall brings back ideal growing conditions for your lawn. Cool nights,
warm days, ample rainfall and morning dew are just about as good as
it gets for grass. Now the lawn is ready to grow again and is looking for
the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage. Some experts
say this is the most important lawn feeding of the year.
Apply your final feeding of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall
Lawn Food right before the winter months. This will strengthen roots
and increase nitrogen storage for an early spring green and a healthier
lawn next year.
6 GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING BUT COST US LITTLE
by Carl Phillips
“Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.”
- Jim Rohn
Whatever the time of year, here are some ideas for gifts we can give
that have the potential to improve the lives of those around. Gifts that
keep on giving.
1) Giving the Gift of Our Full Attention. Give the gift of your full attention
to others around you and allow them the stage they deserve.
2) Giving the Gift of Kindness. There are many ways we can offer the
gift of our kindness. Not expecting anything in return except maybe
the warm feeling we get from knowing we are doing something good
for someone else.
3) Giving the Gift of Our Time. We can do this by taking our commitments
seriously. By booking in time with friends and keeping that time free for
those friends. By making time to stop and shoot the breeze for a while
with a neighbor. By taking time out to spend disconnected from the
online world to spend undistracted with a loved one.
4) Giving the Gift of Judging Less. We’re all human and sometimes we
make mistakes in life. In such times it can help us all if we can talk to
someone that will just listen without making judgements. Good friends
will do this but we can also extend this gift to others. Judge less and
remember, none of us are perfect.
5) Giving the Gift of a Heartfelt Compliment. Closely aligned with 1
and 2 on this list, this is also worthy of its own spot. A well timed and
earnest compliment can have an immediate and positive impact on the
recipient. It shows we have noticed something in others.
6) Giving the Gift of Gratitude. Letting others know how grateful we are
for them being in our lives can mean a lot. Expressing how we appreciate
all they do for us. How they inspire us or have been there for us in
challenging times. Let others know you are grateful for them just the
way they are.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING, AFTER THANKSGIVING DINNER
The most wonderful time of year also means less time for you! Keep your focus on YOU
before, during and after holiday eating:
1) BEFORE: during the day, drink plenty of water, eat hydrating fruits -melons,
apples, take a long walk, eat a whole-grain breakfast
2) DURING: continue to hydrate, make sure your plate has MORE vegetables, avoid
white grains and choose whole grains, gravy on the side, fresh baked potatoes
vs. mashed, WATER!
3) AFTER: continue to hydrate, stay active, go for a walk, have a small
piece of dessert - key is small!
10 ALTERNATIVES TO A THANKSGIVING TURKEY
There are plenty of alternative Thanksgiving meals that will give you that holiday
feeling. Here are some ideas:
• Pork Roast: Adding apples and cinnamon will ensure that no one misses the turkey
when you serve this dish. It smells and tastes like holiday heaven.
• Roasted Chicken: A roasted chicken certainly qualifies as a solid turkey replacement.
• Thanksgiving Jambalaya: You can substitute any meat here: turkey breast slices,
chicken, shrimp.
• Baked Cod or Microwaved Salmon: Who says you can’t serve fish on Thanksgiving!
• Eggplant Parmesan: Both vegetarians and
non-vegetarians alike will love you for this.
• Leg of Lamb: A great alternative that will
everyone, especially if you add exotic spices
and seasonings.
• Beef Stew: Hearty and plentiful; your house
will be filled with the most amazing aromas.
Focus
Family Roster
Mom & Dad
Mom: Beth, VP, Franchise Operations for Marriott
International
Dad: Pete, GM of the Sugarland Marriott Hotel
What Makes Them Tick: Going on vacation, to the theater,
the SPA and spending time with their children.
Kiddos
Nash: 10 YO sports fanatic; highly involved in baseball,
football, basketball
Ireland: 5 YO girly-girl; enjoys gymnastics and swimming
School: Both attend Montessori House for Elementary
Locale
Firethorne - “[We] LOVE living here. Some of our closest
friends (and our kids friends) live in the neighborhood
too. Great community where you will often find neighbors
helping neighbors just because they are “good people”.
The Scoop: Turkey (Stuffing) Day
Favorite Thanksgiving Dish: “Every Thanksgiving week we travel as a family back to Nebraska where
many aunts, uncles and cousins live. The night before Thanksgiving we all get together at one of the
“aunts” houses, drink wine (the adults that is) and make home-made stuffing for the turkey. It’s Beth’s
grandma’s recipe that continues to be passed down. Usually a 20+ pound turkey as there is typically
a gathering of about 30 of us.”
Thanksgiving Tradition: After the annual 2:00 PM Thanksgiving dinner, weather permitting, their family
enjoys a comingled game of soccer in the backyard with kids and adults. Otherwise, they stay in and
– you guessed it – watch football while playing board games. This group knows how to enjoy their
post-turkey time together!
“Thanksgiving has always been the most important family holiday of the year. It’s the one time we all
come together to celebrate and give thanks for this big, fat, Catholic family!”
Christmas Prep
When They Start: “Sometimes
we start before Thanksgiving
to get it done. With 11
siblings in Beth’s family and
over 25 grandkids each
year we pick names. The
siblings and their spouse;
the kids pick kids names.”
How They Get In
GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get
cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in
low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown
patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brownpatched
turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown
patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of
sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.
• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root
growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and
mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade
away.
• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering
stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making
root growth.
• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep
up spraying program and water deeply.
• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and
disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made
now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig
six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure,
water and allow to mellow.
• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter.
Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect
roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree
needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next
Spring’s impatiens.
• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood
meat mixed in soil under each plant.
• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
ABOUT VETERANS DAY
Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11 th . Veterans
Day was originally called “Armistice Day” when President Woodrow
Wilson proclaimed this day in November 1919. Armistice is when
warring parties agree to stop fighting and “Armistice Day” recognizes
the end of World War 1 when hostilities ceased on November 11 th
at 11 AM, 1918 (11 th hour, of the 11 th , of the 11 th month).
On May 13, 1938 Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday each
year. A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace. Originally
Armistice Day only honored veterans of World War.
On November 11, 1947 Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized
a “National Veterans Day” parade in Birmingham, Alabama
to recognize veterans of all wars.
This celebration led to Congress changing Armistice Day to Veterans
Day in 1954 to recognize Veterans of all U.S. wars.
MILITARY FAMILY APPRECIATION MONTH
Military Family Month was established in 1996 by the Armed Services
YMCA, with the U.S. Government recognizing the occasion every year
since. Each November, the President signs a proclamation declaring
November Military Family Month and with hundreds of thousands of
service members deployed overseas, recognizing the daily sacrifices
made by military families has never been more important.
Thank you
A Veteran, whether active duty, discharged, retired,
or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his or
her life, wrote a blank check made payable to The
United States of America, for an amount of up to,
and including his life.
VETERANS!
Our communities are fi lled with the brave men and
women that have selfl essly served our country.
November 11th is designated as Veteran’s Day, however
we are humbled and grateful to each of you today
and always. Thank you, Veterans, for your courage in
protecting our country, our rights and our freedoms.
“This picture was taken up on a tall trianglar wooden 45’ radar
tower. I am black haired fellow on right. I had just turned 19. Fire
Support Base Gela took two assaults by Viet Cong (VC) and were repelled
both times. The first assault occurred on Mother’s Day 1969
and the other was in the summer sometime. The fellow in the middle
Is Dan McIntyre of Rifle, Co. We were both wounded together
on Oct 31st at our next Fire Support Base, Apollo, named for the
first moon landing by man in July 17, 1969. Those were the days…
youth spent in some incredible intense times. The Greatest Generation
is anybody who has served in the combat arms in war time,
not just WWII veterans!!”
SCHOOL NEWS
KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
WWW.KATYISD.ORG
IMPORTANT DATES
November 1 st - 3 rd Six Weeks begins (Secondary)
November 20 th - Thanksgiving Break Begins
November 29 th - Family Night (No Homework Assigned)
KATY ISD LOST INSTRUCTIONAL TIME
As many families and staff continue recovery efforts in our neighborhoods,
homes and community, we are also slowly but surely getting
back on track with the business of teaching and learning across Katy ISD
campuses. As you know, our students lost two weeks of instructional
time as a result of Tropical Storm Harvey. However, because the Texas
Education Agency (TEA) will be waiving up to 10 instructional days,
there will be no need to extend the 2017-18 instructional calendar
or to modify the Thanksgiving, Christmas/winter and spring breaks.
Our Curriculum Department has worked diligently over the past few
weeks to realign and restructure the curriculum unit plans to ensure
that all state standards will be taught this school year. As such, there
will be no gaps in the taught and tested curriculum.
Also, to ensure that our students receive the full benefits of the Katy
ISD learning experience, we have identified means to regain lost instructional
time to deliver additional support to students. This includes
providing enrichment resources for our families, supplementary study
opportunities for Advanced Placement (AP) students and extending
four early release days to full days of instruction.
Support for Advanced Placement (AP) Students:
Additional study opportunities will also be offered to students preparing
for the May 2018 AP exams. Review sessions and resources
are currently being developed and will be shared with students and
published on the website later this Fall.
Extending Four Early Release Days:
The 2017-2018 instructional calendar included six “early release” days
that are typically designated for professional development, teacher
preparation and parent conferences. Four of the previously designated
early release days (Oct. 9 th , 20 th , Feb 16 th , April 13 th ) were/will be
extended to full instructional days. This is designed to allow students
more time in the classroom, as well as to serve the needs of so many
of our families who are displaced by Harvey and depending, now more
than ever, on the daily routine of school to bring a sense of normalcy
to their child(ren)’s lives. We understand that October 9 th and 20 th had
been set aside for parent/teacher conferences at many campuses.
However, in lieu of the in-person conferences, parents are encouraged
to communicate with teachers by email and/or phone. Parents should
also continue to monitor their student’s progress on the Home Access
Center. Friday, December 15 th and Thursday, May 24 th will remain
“early release” days since final exams are given on those dates.
Thank you for your understanding as we move forward with these
post-Harvey initiatives to recapture lost instructional time and to
provide additional support to our students and families. Should you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school.
Enrichment Resources for Families:
Online instructional enrichment activities developed by our Curriculum
Department are available for parents or guardians to work with their
child(ren) at home. These enhanced learning activities are ungraded
and optional and are available on the Katy ISD Curriculum & Instruction
website. Each core subject area will be covered for the remainder of
the school year. These subjects include language arts, mathematics,
science and social studies.
SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL
SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL BEST BUDDIES PROGRAM
BEST BUDDIES FOOD DELIVERY
Representatives from Seven Lakes High School Best Buddies cooked
and delivered meals to families displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Chapter
President Anna Celeste stated, “Our community has always been so
welcoming and supportive of our organization, so we felt in our hearts
that this was an important opportunity for us to give back.”
Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the
social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with
intellectual and developmental disabilities. For individuals within this
community, Best Buddies helps them form meaningful friendships with
their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public
speaking, self-advocacy and communications skills and feel valued by
society. For more information go to www.bestbuddies.org.
BEST BUDDIES SKEETERS GAME
On September 16 th , Anna Celeste
Fedewa and Samantha McDivitt were
chosen to throw the first pitch in the
Sugar Land Skeeters game honoring
Best Buddies. Anna, President of the
Seven Lakes High School Best Buddies
chapter, was working on clean up like
most Houstonians after Harvey made
landfall a few weeks back, when she
received a phone call from a chapter
officer that was volunteering at one
of the local shelters. Anna learned
that Sam, a Buddy in the SLHS BB
Chapter, had checked in to the shelter
with her family after being evacuated
from their flooded home. Showing true leadership, Anna and her
father, went to pick up Sam and her family from the shelter and took
them home. They have spent the weeks since working to clean up the
damaged home and helping Sam and so many others prepare to return
to school. Although Anna and Sam are not matched with each other in
the BB program, their demonstration of how something as simple as
friendship can change lives. The honor was an expression of gratitude for
ST. JOHN XXIII NEWS
St. John XXIII Students Named
National Merit Semifinalists
On Wednesday, September 13 th , officials of the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately
16,000 Semifinalists in the 63 rd annual National Merit Scholarship
Program. St. John XXIII College Preparatory is pleased to announce two
students have been recognized for this achievement. Seniors Bridget
Parmenter and Emily Poux were named National Merit Semifinalists
for 2018. These academically talented high school seniors have the
opportunity to continue in the competition for Finalist standings
and 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million.
We applaud the 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools
across the nation who entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship
Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as the initial screening
of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing
less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the
highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in
a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total
of graduating seniors.
St. John XXIII Seniors Named
National Merit Commended Students For 2018
Timothy Gallic, principal of St. John XXIII College Preparatory, announced
today that Griffin Alexander and Keegan O’Connor have been
named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship
Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will
be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being
recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will
not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship
awards, Commended Students place among the top 50,000 scorers
of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition
by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test (PSAT/NMSQT). “The young men and women being named
Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for
academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These
students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their
accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their
academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence
in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden
their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue
their pursuit of academic success.”
THE
HAVANA NIGHTS
GALA
WAS A SUCCESS!
Although we had to make
big changes in the wake of
Hurricane Harvey, the St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic
School had a successful night
raising money for the school.
We danced the night away
to live Cuban music played
by the band “Que Nota!” Mr.
Gerry Donohue was honored
for his time and dedication to
Catholic education. Thank
you to our supporters who
attended, sponsored and
help plan the event! We appreciate
BLACK FRIDAY TIPS
• The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500). If
you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a good
time.
• The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you
to do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share.
Be aware and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and
know the store layout!
• Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks!
• Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and
aren’t available via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have, make
sure you get it early!
• Check online: some deals can be had online without the in-person
hassle. But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure
you double check!
• Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let it
get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday!
Extra Broth For Thinning
1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
by Ree | The Pioneer Woman
Holidays, Thanksgiving
Preparation
Cook pasta until not quite done - al dente according to package instructions (it will
finish cooking in the oven.) Drain, rinse, and set aside.
In a large pot, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add garlic and saute for a couple of
minutes. Add mushrooms and salt, then saute for a couple more minutes. Pour in the
wine and allow it to cook with the mushrooms for several minutes, or until the liquid
reduces by half.
Sprinkle in flour, then stir the mushrooms around for another minute. Pour in the
broth and stir, cooking for another few minutes until the roux thickens.
Reduce heat to medium low. Cut cream cheese into pieces and add it to the pot. Stir
it to melt (don't be concerned if the cream cheese remains in little bits for awhile;
it'll melt eventually!) Add the leftover turkey, the olives, the peas, the bacon, and the
cheeses. Stir to combine, adding salt and pepper as needed.
Add the cooked spaghetti and stir it to combine. Splash in more broth as needed; you
want the mixture to have a little extra moisture since it will cook off in the oven. If it's
a little soupy, that's fine! Add up to 2 more cups of liquid if you think it needs it.
Pour the mixture into a large baking dish and sprinkle the top with Panko crumbs.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the crumbs
are golden brown.
