Family
Focus
Family Roster
Mom & Dad
Mom: Beth, VP, Franchise Operations for Marriott
International
Dad: Pete, GM of the Sugarland Marriott Hotel
What Makes Them Tick: Going on vacation, to the theater,
the SPA and spending time with their children.
Kiddos
Nash: 10 YO sports fanatic; highly involved in baseball,
football, basketball
Ireland: 5 YO girly-girl; enjoys gymnastics and swimming
School: Both attend Montessori House for Elementary
Locale
Firethorne - “[We] LOVE living here. Some of our closest
friends (and our kids friends) live in the neighborhood
too. Great community where you will often find neighbors
helping neighbors just because they are “good people”.
The Scoop: Turkey (Stuffing) Day
Favorite Thanksgiving Dish: “Every Thanksgiving week we travel as a family back to Nebraska where
many aunts, uncles and cousins live. The night before Thanksgiving we all get together at one of the
“aunts” houses, drink wine (the adults that is) and make home-made stuffing for the turkey. It’s Beth’s
grandma’s recipe that continues to be passed down. Usually a 20+ pound turkey as there is typically
a gathering of about 30 of us.”
Thanksgiving Tradition: After the annual 2:00 PM Thanksgiving dinner, weather permitting, their family
enjoys a comingled game of soccer in the backyard with kids and adults. Otherwise, they stay in and
– you guessed it – watch football while playing board games. This group knows how to enjoy their
post-turkey time together!
“Thanksgiving has always been the most important family holiday of the year. It’s the one time we all
come together to celebrate and give thanks for this big, fat, Catholic family!”
Christmas Prep
When They Start: “Sometimes
we start before Thanksgiving
to get it done. With 11
siblings in Beth’s family and
over 25 grandkids each
year we pick names. The
siblings and their spouse;
the kids pick kids names.”
How They Get In
the Christmas Spirit:
“DECORATING our yard!!
LOVE, LOVE…the more
decorations the better…
come on by! 28515 S
Firethorne Rd!”
We would love to feature your family! Each month, one family will be chosen from one of our communities. For more information, email familyfocus@krenekprinting.com.
Fire Safety For The Home
Safety and Security Tips from S.E.A.L. Security Solutions
Fire Safety for the Home
Fire safety in the home is one area of safety we have some degree of
control over. Educating your family members and having a safety system
in place will help ensure that a safe living environment is maintained.
Taking just a few minutes each year to inspect fire extinguishers and
smoke alarms is time well spent. Practicing and educating family
members in evacuation routes and outside meeting places ensures that
your family is protected in the unfortunate event of a fire in your home.
Common Fire Hazards Include:
• Overloaded power strips.
• Worn electrical cords.
• Not cleaning the lint filter in your dryer.
• Unattended candles.
• Smoking in bed.
• Christmas tree lights left turned on.
• Lightning.
• Matches and lighters left out in the reach of children.
• Space heaters.
The #1 Source of Home Fires:
• Cooking!
Don’t throw water on a grease fire. Instead, put a lid on the pan to
smother the fire. If an oven fire flares up, turn off the oven and leave the
door shut until the fire extinguishes itself.
Fire Extinguishers
• Have at least two A/B/C fire extinguishers on every level. Check the
gauge on your fire extinguisher monthly to be sure it is pressurized. Buy
fire extinguishers and learn how to use them. Place them where they are
most likely to be needed, such as the kitchen. Check periodically to be
sure they are in good working order.
Smoke Alarms
• Working alarms can double your chance of survival in a fire; smoke
alarms should be installed on every floor of your home. Replace
batteries twice a year and keep alarms free of dust and debris. • Teach
children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear
one. • Once a month check whether each alarm in the home is working
properly by pushing the test button. • Replace batteries in smoke alarms
at least once a year. Immediately install a new battery if an alarm chirps,
giving the warning that the battery is low.
Emergency Evacuation Plan
• Have two ways out of your home and practice regularly. Make sure
everyone in your home knows how to call 911 in case of a fire or an
emergency. If your house has more than one story, keep a fire safety
ladder under each bed. Plan ahead where you’ll all meet outside.
Management.
• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property.
• Trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of
the street.
• Remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway
to park cars.
• Store trash cans out of street view.
• Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of
pine needles and leaves.
• We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric
toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many
near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson”
the hard way by being hit by a car.
Crime Reporting
Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves
and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything
suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc.
Waste Removal
Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night
before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should
be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages,
in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make
every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.
Recreational Vehicles
Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the
governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year
vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to
call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will
have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to
2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we
want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you
and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get
upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of
recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.
Commercial Vehicles Parking
Although the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving
numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and
commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and
fines will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as
possible when parking your personal vehicles.
Parking Laws Will Be Enforced
As many residents have noticed, cars parking in the wrong direction
on the side of the road has become an increasing problem throughout
the community. The officers that patrol the neighborhood have been
giving warnings for this, but will begin issuing tickets. Please utilize
your driveway and garage and when parking on the street is necessary,
please park in the same direction as traffic. Additional parking problems
have occurred at the tennis and clubhouse parking lots. As a result, the
Board has adopted a Common Area Parking and Tow Policy. The Policy
has been filed in the official public records with the Harris County Clerk
and is available by visiting www.crest-management.com, clicking on
Communities and selecting Governors Place. Towing will be enforced.
Thanksgiving Day
What Do People Do?
Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and friends to get
together for a special meal. The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing,
potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie and vegetables.
Thanksgiving Day is a time for many people to give thanks for what they
have.
Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns on or around
Thanksgiving Day. Some parades or festivities also mark the opening of
the Christmas shopping season. Many people have a four-day weekend
so it is a popular time for trips and to visit family and friends.
Public Life
Most government offices, businesses, schools and other organizations
are closed on Thanksgiving Day. Many offices and businesses allow staff
to have a four-day weekend so these offices and businesses are also
closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day. Public transit systems do
not usually operate on their regular timetables.
Thanksgiving Day it is one of the busiest periods for travel in the USA.
This can cause congestion and overcrowding. Seasonal parades and
busy football games can cause disruption to local traffic.
Background
Thanksgiving Day has been an annual holiday in the United States since
1863. Not everyone sees Thanksgiving Day as a cause for celebration.
Each year since 1970, a group of Native Americans and their supporters
have staged a protest for a National Day of Mourning at Plymouth Rock
in Plymouth, Massachusetts on Thanksgiving Day. American Indian
Heritage Day is also observed at this time of the year.
There are claims that the first Thanksgiving Day was held in the city of El
Paso, Texas in 1598. Another early event was held in 1619 in the Virginia
Colony. Many people trace the origins of the modern Thanksgiving Day to
the harvest celebration that the Pilgrims held in Plymouth, Massachusetts
in 1621. However, their first true thanksgiving was in 1623, when they
gave thanks for rain that ended a drought. These early thanksgivings
took the form of a special church service, rather than a feast.
In the second half of the 1600s, thanksgivings after the harvest became
more common and started to become annual events. However, it was
celebrated on different days in different communities and in some places
there were more than one thanksgiving each year. George Washington,
the first president of the United States, proclaimed the first national
Thanksgiving Day in 1789.
Serve generous daily portions to all you love!
Turkey Tetrazzini
1-1/2 pound Thin Spaghetti, Broken In Half
4 Tablespoons Butter
4 cloves Garlic, Minced
1 pound White Mushrooms, Quartered
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 cup White Wine
1/3 cup Flour
4 cups Turkey (or Chicken) Broth
1 block 8 Ounce Cream Cheese
3 cups Cooked (leftover) Turkey
1 cup Finely Chopped Black Olives
1-1/2 cup Frozen Green Peas
4 slices Bacon, Fried And Cut Into Bits
1 cup Grated Monterey Jack Cheese
1 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
Salt And Pepper, to taste
Extra Broth For Thinning
1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
Cook pasta until not quite done - al dente according to package instructions
(it will finish cooking in the oven.) Drain, rinse, and set aside.
In a large pot, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add garlic and saute for
a couple of minutes. Add mushrooms and salt, then saute for a couple more
minutes. Pour in the wine and allow it to cook with the mushrooms for several
minutes, or until the liquid reduces by half.
Sprinkle in flour, then stir the mushrooms around for another minute. Pour
in the broth and stir, cooking for another few minutes until the roux thickens.
Reduce heat to medium low. Cut cream cheese into pieces and add it to the
pot. Stir it to melt (don't be concerned if the cream cheese remains in little
bits for awhile; it'll melt eventually!) Add the leftover turkey, the olives, the
peas, the bacon, and the cheeses. Stir to combine, adding salt and pepper as
needed.
Add the cooked spaghetti and stir it to combine. Splash in more broth as
needed; you want the mixture to have a little extra moisture since it will cook
off in the oven. If it's a little soupy, that's fine! Add up to 2 more cups of liquid
if you think it needs it.
Pour the mixture into a large baking dish and sprinkle the top with Panko
crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly
and the crumbs are golden brown.
1 ST ANNUAL REIGN OVER CANCER WALK
POSTPONED UNTIL FEBRUARY 25, 2018
Due to the massive flooding the Katy community experienced as a
result of Hurricane Harvey and the continued efforts to recover from
the devastation it caused, the Reign Over Cancer (“ROC”) Walk has
been postponed until Sunday, February 25, 2018. The walk will be
held at Cane Island and will begin at 2 PM. Plan to stick around after
the walk to enjoy complimentary food and beverages, music and
family-friendly activities.
The ROC Walk will recognize people in the community currently
undergoing cancer treatment, highlight survivors and raise money
to fund GEST Foundation grants. Register as an individual or a team
online at www.GESTfoundation.org. Proceeds from the ROC Walk will
provide grants for services including grocery delivery, home cleaning,
home wound care, transportation or even counseling to help with the
internal wounds that come with facing the news “you have cancer.”
The walk will be fun for ALL ages, so grab your family and friends
and join us at the beautiful Cane Island for an afternoon of fun while
raising money for a very important cause.
Registration for the ROC Walk is still open and we encourage everyone to
sign up! Register now at www.GESTFoundation.org. For up to the minute
race information and updates, follow us on Facebook. Sponsorship
opportunities for the Reign Over Cancer Walk are still available! We have
several options to fit all marketing needs and budgets. Contact Aaron or
Michelle Perzan at 956-832-9187 or 956-832-1988.
beloved Kidz Zone will be nestled in historic Decker Park while live music
entertains all day from Wessendorff Park’s acoustically designed Gazebo.
Festival attendees can stroll along the newly completed trails from
Second St. around historic Morton Cemetery at edge of Wessendorff Park.
A hayride will transport attendees to event features ranging from outdoor
artisan Vendors, Farmers Market, Beer & Wine Garden, Baking Contest, to
a Classic Car Show.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in Fort Bend County is heading up the pecan
education portion of the Richmond Pecan Harvest Festival. This includes
a series of short pecan presentations appropriately entitled ‘Pecan Talks.’
Topics range from pecan history, health attributes and the significance
of the pecan to our culture; past, present and future. Attendees will find
40+ varieties of pecans, submitted by many of the established pecan
growers of Fort Bend County, as well as the Ft. Bend County Pecan Show
awards display! The pecan education portion of the Festival is graciously
supported by a local partnership with Fort Bend County Farm Bureau,
cooperatively investing in agricultural education.
The Pecan Harvest Festival is a family friendly event, which uniquely
introduces Richmond’s charm as experienced at last year’s inaugural event
by more than 3,000 in attendance. This year, the event will be expanding
along Morton Street and including Historic Downtown Richmond’s local
merchants! We invite you to join us! Pack up your picnic blanket and
bring the entire family to our second annual Pecan Harvest Festival of
Richmond, Texas. For more information, contacts, applications and entry
forms, go to www.pecan-harvest-festival-tx.com.
