THE LOST CREEK PARK
Now that Fort Bend MUD50 has been approved to issue Park Bonds and
will be able to raise money for both parks and trails, the Lost Creek Board
of Directors decided to turn the park over to Fort Bend MUD50 so that it
can be completed and maintained properly. It is expected that the trails
and the benches along the trail in the park will be completed during
the spring of 2018. Along with the Lost Creek park, there will be parks
and trails built in the Parkway Lakes and Grand Meadows communities
within the MUD50 district during 2018. It is all part of a master plan that
will be presented at our Annual Homeowners meeting in February.
PARKING IN THE STREET
Be courteous to your neighbors if you choose to park in the street
anywhere in Lost Creek. Please don’t park directly opposite another
parked vehicle so as to leave only a narrow space for other vehicles
to drive. Be aware that, if you park in the street, you could be risking
damage to your vehicle if it is hit by a passing vehicle.
DO NOT LET YOUR PETS RUN FREE IN LOST CREEK
Common household pets must be confined to a fenced-in backyard or
in the house. Pets are not allowed to roam free outside of your house
or outside of your fenced-in backyard. When walking your dog or
other pet away from your property, it must be on a leash at all times
within Lost Creek. This is a Fort Bend County ordinance as well as a
Lost Creek regulation.
PLEASE SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Don’t contribute to the spread of disease. Young children sometimes
pick up pet poop and play with it not knowing what it is. When you
walk your dog, respect all yards and sidewalks in our neighborhood as
well as Lost Creek’s community property. Remember to bring either a
scooper and/or plastic bags to pick up the poop and place in trash at
home or in the trashcan at the rec center. Thank you.
HARVEY
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Just as Hurricane Harvey displaced thousands of people, Harvey
also displaced thousands of wild animals. Compassionate residents
have brought birds, snakes, squirrels and even an alligator to TWRC
Wildlife Center for care.
Although there is no way of knowing the actual number of animals
affected, the numbers are, no doubt, very high. It is human nature
to want to help these animals but in some cases, it is better to leave
them alone.
• DEER - Many deer were forced to move to higher ground. People
are seeing deer in their yards, in the streets and other areas with
dry land. It is for your own safety that you do not try to catch these
animals. Make sure that gates are open so they have a way to exit
your yard. Sadly, there’s nothing else you can do.
• ALLIGATORS AND SNAKES - It seems silly that we would have to
warn people to stay away from them but sometimes curiosity gets
the best of people. Keep your distance. If you need help identifying
a snake to find out if it’s venomous, call us and we can help. We can
also refer you to a professional who can assist with the removal of
snakes. For help with alligators, we recommend you call your Game
Warden. To find the Game Warden for your area, go to the Texas
Parks and Wildlife website.
It is baby squirrel season right now and in the case of these animals,
your intervention may be needed. If you find a baby, you will first
need to try to reunite the baby with its mother. You can do this by
placing the baby in a small container near the area where you found
it. Make sure the container is safe from dogs and cats. Watch to see if
mom comes to get her little one. If, after a couple of hours, the mom
has not returned, you will need to intervene. The most important
thing is to keep the baby warm. You can accomplish by placing the
baby in a box along with a soft cloth and place the box on a heating
pad set to low. Do NOT attempt to give the baby food or water. Bring
the baby to TWRC Wildlife Center as soon as possible.
Chances are very low that you will encounter any other wildlife
babies at this time of the year. You may encounter injured adult
raccoons, opossums and birds, however. We advise that you do not
try to rescue these animals. Their intention is not to hurt you but
they may bite or scratch because they are afraid.
If you have questions about wildlife, we are available from 10 AM to
2 PM to help you. Before attempting to rescue an animal and before
bringing it in to us, we suggest you give us a call first. After hours,
our website can provide you with many answers.
Thank you for your support during this difficult time.
6 GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING
BUT COST US LITTLE
by Carl Phillips
Amelia Norabuena
MAID SERVICES
281-912-5036
“Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already
have.” - Jim Rohn
Whatever the time of year, here are some ideas for gifts we can
give that have the potential to improve the lives of those around.
Gifts that keep on giving.
1) Giving the Gift of Our Full Attention. Give the gift of your full
attention to others around you and allow them the stage they
deserve.
2) Giving the Gift of Kindness. There are many ways we can offer
the gift of our kindness. Not expecting anything in return except
maybe the warm feeling we get from knowing we are doing
something good for someone else.
3) Giving the Gift of Our Time. We can do this by taking our commitments
seriously. By booking in time with friends and keeping
that time free for those friends. By making time to stop and shoot
the breeze for a while with a neighbor. By taking time out to spend
disconnected from the online world to spend undistracted with
a loved one.
4) Giving the Gift of Judging Less. We’re all human and sometimes
we make mistakes in life. In such times it can help us all if we can
talk to someone that will just listen without making judgements.
Good friends will do this but we can also extend this gift to others.
Judge less and remember, none of us are perfect.
5) Giving the Gift of a Heartfelt Compliment. Closely aligned with
1 and 2 on this list, this is also worthy of its own spot. A well timed
and earnest compliment can have an immediate and positive
impact on the recipient. It shows we have noticed something
in others.
6) Giving the Gift of Gratitude. Letting others know how grateful
we are for them being in our lives can mean a lot. Expressing how
we appreciate all they do for us. How they inspire us or have been
there for us in challenging times. Let others know you are grateful
for them just the way they are.
BLACK FRIDAY TIPS
• The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500).
If you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a
good time.
• The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you to
do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share. Be aware
and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and know the store
layout!
• Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks!
• Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and
aren’t avail able via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have,
make sure you get it early!
• Check online: some deals can be had online without the in-person hassle.
But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure you
double check!
• Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let
it get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday!
GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get
cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low
areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch
according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It
spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the
same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate
those low spots.
• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth
over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a
schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.
• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering
stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.
• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep
up spraying program and water deeply.
• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease
organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will
benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches
deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow
to mellow.
• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter.
Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots
from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles;
they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s
impatiens.
• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood
meat mixed in soil under each plant.
• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
ABOUT VETERANS DAY
Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11 th . Veterans
Day was originally called “Armistice Day” when President Woodrow
Wilson proclaimed this day in November 1919. Armistice is when
warring parties agree to stop fighting and “Armistice Day” recognizes
the end of World War 1 when hostilities ceased on November 11 th
at 11 AM, 1918 (11 th hour, of the 11 th , of the 11 th month).
On May 13, 1938 Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday each
year. A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace. Originally
Armistice Day only honored veterans of World War.
On November 11, 1947 Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized
a “National Veterans Day” parade in Birmingham, Alabama
to recognize veterans of all wars.
This celebration led to Congress changing Armistice Day to Veterans
Day in 1954 to recognize Veterans of all U.S. wars.
MILITARY FAMILY APPRECIATION MONTH
Military Family Month was established in 1996 by the Armed Services
YMCA, with the U.S. Government recognizing the occasion every year
since. Each November, the President signs a proclamation declaring
November Military Family Month and with hundreds of thousands of
service members deployed overseas, recognizing the daily sacrifices
made by military families has never been more important.
Thank you
A Veteran, whether active duty, discharged, retired,
or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his or
her life, wrote a blank check made payable to The
United States of America, for an amount of up to,
and including his life.
VETERANS!
Our communities are fi lled with the brave men and
women that have selfl essly served our country.
November 11th is designated as Veteran’s Day, however
we are humbled and grateful to each of you today
and always. Thank you, Veterans, for your courage in
protecting our country, our rights and our freedoms.
both times. The first assault occurred on Mother’s Day 1969
and the other was in the summer sometime. The fellow in the middle
On Wednesday, September 13 th , officials of the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately
16,000 Semifinalists in the 63 rd annual National Merit Scholarship
Program. St. John XXIII College Preparatory is pleased to announce two
students have been recognized for this achievement. Seniors Bridget
Parmenter and Emily Poux were named National Merit Semifinalists
for 2018. These academically talented high school seniors have the
opportunity to continue in the competition for Finalist standings
and 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million.
We applaud the 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools
across the nation who entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship
Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as the initial screening
of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing
less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the
highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in
a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total
of graduating seniors.
St. John XXIII Seniors Named
National Merit Commended Students For 2018
Timothy Gallic, principal of St. John XXIII College Preparatory, announced
today that Griffin Alexander and Keegan O’Connor have been
named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship
Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will
be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being
recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will
not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship
awards, Commended Students place among the top 50,000 scorers
of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition
by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test (PSAT/NMSQT). “The young men and women being named
Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for
academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These
students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their
accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their
academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence
in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden
their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue
their pursuit of academic success.”
THE HAVANA NIGHTS GALA
WAS A SUCCESS!
Although we had to make big changes in the wake of Hurricane
Harvey, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School had a successful
night raising money for the school. We danced the night away to live
Cuban music played by the band “Que Nota!” Mr. Gerry Donohue was
honored for his time and dedication to Catholic education. Thank you
to our supporters who attended, sponsored and help plan the event!
Extra Broth For Thinning
1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
by Ree | The Pioneer Woman
Holidays, Thanksgiving
Preparation
Cook pasta until not quite done - al dente according to package instructions (it will
finish cooking in the oven.) Drain, rinse, and set aside.
In a large pot, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add garlic and saute for a couple of
minutes. Add mushrooms and salt, then saute for a couple more minutes. Pour in the
wine and allow it to cook with the mushrooms for several minutes, or until the liquid
reduces by half.
Sprinkle in flour, then stir the mushrooms around for another minute. Pour in the
broth and stir, cooking for another few minutes until the roux thickens.
Reduce heat to medium low. Cut cream cheese into pieces and add it to the pot. Stir
it to melt (don't be concerned if the cream cheese remains in little bits for awhile;
it'll melt eventually!) Add the leftover turkey, the olives, the peas, the bacon, and the
cheeses. Stir to combine, adding salt and pepper as needed.
Add the cooked spaghetti and stir it to combine. Splash in more broth as needed; you
want the mixture to have a little extra moisture since it will cook off in the oven. If it's
a little soupy, that's fine! Add up to 2 more cups of liquid if you think it needs it.
Pour the mixture into a large baking dish and sprinkle the top with Panko crumbs.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the crumbs
are golden brown.
