PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK
COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the
financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot
owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee
which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and
maintain the common areas, such as the swimming
pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal
expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions.
The Board meets every month at 6:30 p.m. in
the meeting room at the community building. Residents
are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to
place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA
office in advance.
The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the
4th Thursday of January.
Members hold three year staggered terms and are
elected. The election process is as follows:
1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual
Maintenance fee statements.
2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday
after the Annual Meeting ending on the following
Saturday at 7pm.
HPCA Office
Office Hrs: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon- Fri.
the office. Every effort is made to have one of the three
employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business
of the association may require us to be out of the office
for a short period of time. If we are out of the office
when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a
an as-needed basis for additional coverage.
Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666
KEEP BEAR CREEK BEAUTIFUL!
Homeowners and residents, please store your polycarts, recycle bins
and all other items out of public view. Trash should be put out the night
before or day of pickup and polycarts should be promptly removed same
day as pickup. Let’s keep our neighborhood beautiful!
GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain
continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended
for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads
easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add
an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.
• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months.
Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the
grass blade away.
• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to
permit all strength to be used in making root growth.
• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and
water deeply.
• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and
transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil
is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow
to mellow.
• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back
to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter
drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias
and next Spring’s impatiens.
• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant.
• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
BARKING DOGS
If you have a problem with a neighbor’s dog constantly barking, you
should first contact the pet owner and make them aware of the problem.
In the event that doesn’t work, you should then contact the Constables
at 281-463-6666 to file a complaint.
LOOSE OR LOST PETS & DOG BITES
Contact Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191 or 3194.
LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone
who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid
of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting
hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept
under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas.
The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep
any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following
circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in
length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of
controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not
have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work
or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all
our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect
anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet
owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing
to properly restrain their pet.
Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must
be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner.
We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep
cats away.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained
please contact:
ECI Project TYKE is a year round Early Childhood Intervention program
(ECI) in the Katy Independent School District that specializes in working
with children who need extra help. The program provides developmental
services to children who may need assistance in attaining developmental
milestones or who may have a disability. Services are provided to children
from birth to three where they live, learn or play. ECI Project TYKE
develops a supportive partnership with families by providing educational
and emotional supports, which enriches the daily routines and relationships
that will enable their child to reach his or her maximum potential.
Anyone (parent, family, friend, caregiver, professional) can refer a child
ABOUT VETERANS DAY
Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11 th . Veterans Day
was originally called “Armistice Day” when President Woodrow Wilson
proclaimed this day in November 1919. Armistice is when warring
parties agree to stop fighting and “Armistice Day” recognizes the end
of World War 1 when hostilities ceased on November 11 th at 11 AM,
1918 (11 th hour, of the 11 th , of the 11 th month).
On May 13, 1938 Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday each year.
A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace. Originally Armistice
Day only honored veterans of World War.
On November 11, 1947 Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized
a “National Veterans Day” parade in Birmingham, Alabama
to recognize veterans of all wars.
This celebration led to Congress changing Armistice Day to Veterans
Day in 1954 to recognize Veterans of all U.S. wars.
Military Family Month was established in 1996 by the Armed Services
since. Each November, the President signs a proclamation declaring
November Military Family Month and with hundreds of thousands of
service members deployed overseas, recognizing the daily sacrifices
made by military families has never been more important.
HARVEY
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Just as Hurricane Harvey displaced thousands of people, Harvey
also displaced thousands of wild animals. Compassionate residents
have brought birds, snakes, squirrels and even an alligator to TWRC
Wildlife Center for care.
Although there is no way of knowing the actual number of animals
affected, the numbers are, no doubt, very high. It is human nature
to want to help these animals but in some cases, it is better to
leave them alone.
• DEER - Many deer were forced to move to higher ground. People
are seeing deer in their yards, in the streets and other areas with
dry land. It is for your own safety that you do not try to catch these
animals. Make sure that gates are open so they have a way to exit
your yard. Sadly, there’s nothing else you can do.
• ALLIGATORS AND SNAKES - It seems silly that we would have to
warn people to stay away from them but sometimes curiosity gets
the best of people. Keep your distance. If you need help identifying
a snake to find out if it’s venomous, call us and we can help. We can
also refer you to a professional who can assist with the removal of
snakes. For help with alligators, we recommend you call your Game
Warden. To find the Game Warden for your area, go to the Texas
Parks and Wildlife website.
It is baby squirrel season right now and in the case of these animals,
your intervention may be needed. If you find a baby, you will first
need to try to reunite the baby with its mother. You can do this
by placing the baby in a small container near the area where you
found it. Make sure the container is safe from dogs and cats. Watch
to see if mom comes to get her little one. If, after a couple of hours,
the mom has not returned, you will need to intervene. The most
important thing is to keep the baby warm. You can accomplish by
placing the baby in a box along with a soft cloth and place the box
Chances are very low that you will encounter any other wildlife
babies at this time of the year. You may encounter injured adult
raccoons, opossums and birds, however. We advise that you do
not try to rescue these animals. Their intention is not to hurt you
but they may bite or scratch because they are afraid.
If you have questions about wildlife, we are available from 10 AM to
2 PM to help you. Before attempting to rescue an animal and before
bringing it in to us, we suggest you give us a call first. After hours,
our website can provide you with many answers.
Thank you for your support during this difficult time.
November 29 th - Family Night (No Homework Assigned)
KATY ISD LOST INSTRUCTIONAL TIME
As many families and staff continue recovery efforts in our neighborhoods,
homes and community, we are also slowly but surely getting
back on track with the business of teaching and learning across Katy ISD
campuses. As you know, our students lost two weeks of instructional
time as a result of Tropical Storm Harvey. However, because the Texas
Education Agency (TEA) will be waiving up to 10 instructional days,
there will be no need to extend the 2017-18 instructional calendar
or to modify the Thanksgiving, Christmas/winter and spring breaks.
Our Curriculum Department has worked diligently over the past few
weeks to realign and restructure the curriculum unit plans to ensure
that all state standards will be taught this school year. As such, there
will be no gaps in the taught and tested curriculum.
Also, to ensure that our students receive the full benefits of the Katy
ISD learning experience, we have identified means to regain lost instructional
time to deliver additional support to students. This includes
providing enrichment resources for our families, supplementary study
opportunities for Advanced Placement (AP) students and extending
four early release days to full days of instruction.
Support for Advanced Placement (AP) Students:
Additional study opportunities will also be offered to students preparing
for the May 2018 AP exams. Review sessions and resources
are currently being developed and will be shared with students and
published on the website later this Fall.
Extending Four Early Release Days:
The 2017-2018 instructional calendar included six “early release” days
that are typically designated for professional development, teacher
preparation and parent conferences. Four of the previously designated
early release days (Oct. 9 th , 20 th , Feb 16 th , April 13 th ) were/will be
extended to full instructional days. This is designed to allow students
more time in the classroom, as well as to serve the needs of so many
of our families who are displaced by Harvey and depending, now more
than ever, on the daily routine of school to bring a sense of normalcy
to their child(ren)’s lives. We understand that October 9 th and 20 th had
been set aside for parent/teacher conferences at many campuses.
However, in lieu of the in-person conferences, parents are encouraged
to communicate with teachers by email and/or phone. Parents should
also continue to monitor their student’s progress on the Home Access
Center. Friday, December 15 th and Thursday, May 24 th will remain
“early release” days since final exams are given on those dates.
Thank you for your understanding as we move forward with these
post-Harvey initiatives to recapture lost instructional time and to
provide additional support to our students and families. Should you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school.
Enrichment Resources for Families:
Online instructional enrichment activities developed by our Curriculum
Department are available for parents or guardians to work with their
child(ren) at home. These enhanced learning activities are ungraded
and optional and are available on the Katy ISD Curriculum & Instruction
website. Each core subject area will be covered for the remainder of
the school year. These subjects include language arts, mathematics,
science and social studies.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in Fort Bend County is heading up the
includes a series of short pecan presentations appropriately entitled
‘Pecan Talks.’ Topics range from pecan history, health attributes and
the significance of the pecan to our culture; past, present and future.
Attendees will find 40+ varieties of pecans, submitted by many of the
established pecan growers of Fort Bend County, as well as the Ft. Bend
County Pecan Show awards display! The pecan education portion of the
Festival is graciously supported by a local partnership with Fort Bend
County Farm Bureau, cooperatively investing in agricultural education.
The Pecan Harvest Festival is a family friendly event, which uniquely
introduces Richmond’s charm as experienced at last year’s inaugural
event by more than 3,000 in attendance. This year, the event will be
Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor
of chiropractic can help my problem?”
We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination,
including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation
and examination, including x-rays, if necessary,
(procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00.
We will make this special program available through November.
The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation
and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
Reg. $ 187.00 Program
Must present ad at time of appointment.
Expires 11/30/17
YOUR INITIAL VISIT WILL INCLUDE:
✓ A private consultation with the doctor.
✓ X-rays, if necessary.
POPULAR THANKSGIVING SIDE DISHES BY REGION
Courtesy of:
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/heres-what-your-part-of-america-eats-on-thanksgiving/?ex_cid=538twitter
WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING, AFTER THANKSGIVING DINNER
The most wonderful time of year also means less time for you! Keep your
focus on YOU before, during and after holiday eating:
1) BEFORE: during the day, drink plenty of water, eat hydrating
fruits -melons, apples, take a long walk, eat a whole-grain breakfast
2) DURING: continue to hydrate, make sure your plate has MORE
vegetables, avoid white grains and choose whole grains, gravy
on the side, fresh baked potatoes vs. mashed, WATER!
3) AFTER: continue to hydrate, stay active, go for a walk, have a small
piece of dessert - key is small!
10 ALTERNATIVES TO A THANKSGIVING TURKEY
There are plenty of alternative Thanksgiving meals that will give you
that holiday feeling. Here are some ideas:
• Pork Roast: Adding apples and cinnamon will ensure that no one
misses the turkey when you serve this dish. It smells and tastes like
holiday heaven.
• Roasted Chicken: A roasted chicken certainly qualifies as a solid
turkey replacement.
• Thanksgiving Jambalaya: You can substitute any meat here: turkey
breast slices, chicken, shrimp.
• Baked Cod or Microwaved Salmon: Who says you can’t serve fish on
Thanksgiving!
• Eggplant Parmesan: Both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will
love you for this.
• Leg of Lamb: A great alternative that will everyone, especially if you
add exotic spices and seasonings.
• Beef Stew: Hearty and plentiful; your house will be filled with the
most amazing aromas.
NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM
The Benefits of Flood Insurance Versus Disaster Assistance
FLOOD INSURANCE
• You are in control. Flood insurance claims are paid even
if a disaster is not declared by the President.
• More than 20 percent of NFIP claims come from outside
of mapped Special Flood Hazard Areas.
• There is no payback requirement.
• Flood insurance policies are continuous and are not
non-renewed or canceled for repeat losses.
• Flood insurance reimburses you for all covered building losses up to
$250,000 for residential occupancies and up to $500,000 for businesses.
Contents coverage is also available up to $100,000 for residential
occupancies and up to $500,000 for businesses.
• The average cost of a flood insurance policy is about $600 annually.
The cost of a preferred risk policy is less than $200 annually, if you live
in a moderate-to-low-risk area.
DISASTER ASSISTANCE
• Most forms of Federal disaster assistance require
a Presidential declaration.
• Federal disaster assistance declarations are not awarded
in all flooding incidents.
• The most typical form of disaster assistance
is a loan that must be repaid with interest.
• The duration of a Small Business Administration (SBA)
disaster home loan could extend to 30 years.
• The average Individuals and Households Program award for Presidential
disaster declarations related to flooding in 2008 was less than $4,000.
• Repayment on a $50,000 SBA disaster home loan is $240 a month or
$2,880 annually at 4 percent interest.
For more information about the NFIP and flood insurance, call 1-800-
427-4661 or contact your insurance company or agent. For an agent
referral, call 1-888-435-6637 or go to www.floodsmart.gov.
Extra Broth For Thinning
1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
by Ree | The Pioneer Woman
Holidays, Thanksgiving
Preparation
Cook pasta until not quite done - al dente according to package instructions (it will
finish cooking in the oven.) Drain, rinse, and set aside.
In a large pot, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add garlic and saute for a couple of
minutes. Add mushrooms and salt, then saute for a couple more minutes. Pour in the
wine and allow it to cook with the mushrooms for several minutes, or until the liquid
reduces by half.
Sprinkle in flour, then stir the mushrooms around for another minute. Pour in the
broth and stir, cooking for another few minutes until the roux thickens.
Reduce heat to medium low. Cut cream cheese into pieces and add it to the pot. Stir
it to melt (don't be concerned if the cream cheese remains in little bits for awhile;
it'll melt eventually!) Add the leftover turkey, the olives, the peas, the bacon, and the
cheeses. Stir to combine, adding salt and pepper as needed.
Add the cooked spaghetti and stir it to combine. Splash in more broth as needed; you
want the mixture to have a little extra moisture since it will cook off in the oven. If it's
a little soupy, that's fine! Add up to 2 more cups of liquid if you think it needs it.
Pour the mixture into a large baking dish and sprinkle the top with Panko crumbs.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the crumbs
are golden brown.
