Gardening tips for late Autumn - early Winter

The leaves are starting to build up and that grass rake
is going to see some use. Keep leaves from building up
on lawns as they’ll smother the grass and kill it off, as
long as they don’t get too bad I can put up with leaves
in beds and borders providing they’re not smothering
plants. Prune Red and blackcurrants, gooseberries and
raspberries. There is a slight difference between pruning
red and blackcurrants. Red currants tend to fruit on wood
that is at least two years old and are grown on a single
stem. Blackcurrants tend to fruit on year old branches
and are grown as a bush. So with blackcurrants you can
take out older growth but not so much on a red currant.
What other jobs are there, if you want to plant fruit
bushes now is a good time, start clearing the summer
bedding, if you want to remove the dead tops of
herbaceous perennials do that too or leave them as an
insect habitat. If you’re planting spring bulbs you need
to get on with it.

Early Winter then, get the Christmas list in early so
Santa can bring you a new pair of warm gloves. Dig over
the veg plot, one way to warm up in winter. Check bulbs,
corms and tubers that you have put in storage regularly
for health and discard any damaged ones.
Take root and hardwood shrub cuttings. If you grow
alpines cover them with a sheet of glass, if possible, to
protect them against frost. Gradually reduce the amount
of water you give plants in the greenhouse except winter
flowering plants that are still in strong active growth.
Ventilate the greenhouse on warm days to get some air
flowing through, lack of air can encourage diseases.
Don’t forget to protect any vulnerable plants that are
going to stay in the garden.

Housing Association with over 70 years’ experience in
providing affordable housing and care to the over 55’s
