DEAR CHRIST CHURCH FAMILY,
Christians have been giving gifts to celebrate Christ’s birth since as early
as the fourth century. The tradition traces back to the presents the wise
men gave Jesus shortly after his birth. It’s a fun tradition and a helpful
way to celebrate the love and grace God showers on us each day.
Of course, it can also get out of hand.
This year we wi l spend over 650 bi lion on gifts – a good
percentage of which wi l be set aside as soon as they are opened
and never thought about again. On top of this, many of us wi l
attend a crazy number of office parties and family gatherings,
where we’ l drink 80,000 ga lons of egg nog and exchange gifts that
we are unlikely to use or value. What does this have to do with
Jesus? In some cases, not very much. That’s why we’ve joined with
others to help redeem Christmas by encouraging people to: Spend
Less, Give More and Love A l.
I’ve been a fan of the Advent Conspiracy ever since I saw my Dad’s
face the year I gave him a card that said, “I couldn’t bear to give
you another golf shirt, so in your honor I bought a goat for an
impoverished family in Kenya.”
Next month we’ l be asking you to support Christ Church with a
year-end gift. We do this because seven percent of our entire budget
comes in during the last forty-eight hours of the year. Right now, I

Local Holiday Events
Annual Highland Park Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony
3-5pm Saturday, Nov. 18, Port Clinton Square.
Join Mayor Nancy Rotering, along with other community leaders,
as over 200 trees in downtown Highland Park will be magically
lit for the 2017 holiday season.
There will be plenty of family friendly activities throughout downtown
Highland Park including the Holiday Scavenger Hunt from
3–4:45pm, where participants stroll through town searching for
answers to fun questions about more than a dozen businesses.
Each participant will receive a raffle ticket(s) for a chance to win
great prizes donated by local businesses.
Live entertainment will feature:
2:45pm Arrival of Santa
3:00 – 4:50pm Live Entertainment featuring music, song and dance
4:55pm Tree Lighting Count Down with Mayor Rotering
A special early arrival of Santa Claus to the Square at 2:45pm to
give children ample time to send their holiday wishes. Attendees
can also enjoy a horse-drawn carriage available at Highland Park
Bank & Trust and hot chocolate during the event. In addition,
refreshments, activities and goodies will be distributed by many
participating local businesses.

North Shore School of Dance
presents “The Nutcracker”

North Shore School of Dance has been presenting its annual
December production. Each year, their sold-out productions
include performing guest artists and dancers from the North
Shore and surrounding suburbs. More than 75 dancers are cast,
including students, adults and professional dancers. This hourlong
ballet is appropriate for children of all ages and continues
to be a family tradition on the North Shore. A portion of their
proceeds have been donated to various organizations and charity
groups over the years. In the years past, their cast has made
goody bags and sent donations to troops overseas, collected and
donated items for Toys for Tots and Save-A-Pet in Grayslake.

The devastation brought by recent hurricanes and earthquakes
has spurred a desire in our community to help the victims. The
“Disaster Relief Quarter Campaign #OurCommunityCares” is

funds to help victims of these devastating natural disasters. The

Highland Park Community Foundation
The Highland Park Community Foundation was established
in 1992 at the request of the City of Highland Park to build
and maintain a permanent endowment fund. The fund serves
to support the services of numerous social service, cultural,
educational, and environmental agencies in Highland Park and
Highwood. It is also used to nurture the early stages of new and
innovative programs. The Foundation’s mission is to expand
opportunities for all Highland Park and Highwood residents and
to support organizations and programs that meet the unmet needs
of the community — needs that are not met by governmental or
other sources. By choosing an endowment fund as its primary
financial vehicle, the Foundation can serve the community in
perpetuity. Donating to the Foundation, therefore, is making a gift
that keeps on giving! The Foundation’s goal is to raise a minimum
of $200,000 in this year’s annual campaign.
