TOURISM MAY SET
SAIL FROM INDIAN
SHORES SOON
NEW DELHI: Come 2018 and Indian
sea farers can set sail for Australia,
the Middle East, Thailand or Indonesia
without having to first fly to Singapore
or Bangkok to board a cruise liner.
The government has prepared a plan
to develop cruise tourism from India
and is in talks with international
companies to kick-start the facility by
next year as part of efforts to promote
the country as a complete tourist
destination. The move is expected to
boost revenue from tourism and create
jobs.
A high-level taskforce chaired by
the shipping secretary is in advanced
discussions with cruise terminal
management and construction
companies including Singapore-based
SATS-Creuers Cruise Services and
London-based PSA to start operations
from India, a senior government
official told ET on condition of
anonymity because the proposal is yet
to be finalised.
“The tenders for the same would be
floated soon,” the official said, adding
that the shipping ministry has roped in
Miami-based consulting firm Bermello
Ajamil & Partners along with EY to
draw up a plan for the development of
cruise tourism.
The ministry will invest Rs 1,500
crore to set up five cruise terminals in
the country, one each in Mumbai, Goa,
Chennai, Cochin and near Kandla port.
Another top official in the tourism
ministry confirmed that work is in
advanced stages and the government
will finalise incentives to be offered to
attract international companies to set
up base in India.
Demand for cruise tourism increased
62% between 2005 and 2015, with more
than 25 million such passengers likely
by the end of this year, according
to Cruise Lines International
Association. The industry generated
$117 billion in output worldwide in
2015.
Goa Gets
Set For
Three-Day
Bird Festival
In January
PANAJI: The state forest department
will hold the second edition of the Goa
Bird Festival in January next year.
Besides avian species, the festival will
focus on pelagic birds that migrate to
the state during that month.
Scheduled from January 12 to 14,
the festival will take place at Cotigao
wildlife sanctuary, a hotspot of ecology
and rich biodiversity.
Besides giving visitors an
opportunity to spot rare and
beautiful birds, organisers are also
contemplating scheduling a day for
watching marine birds along the state's
coastline.
The festival will be split into two
days at the Cotigao wildlife sanctuary,
and one day by the sea. "The three-day
festival will play host to both, amateur
birdwatchers, as well as renowned
ornithologists. A number of nature
and bird watching trails have been
designed for them to sight various
indigenous birds and migratory
species that regard Goa as their home,"
a forest official said.
Pelagic bird surveys by the Goa Bird
Conservation Network (GBCN) over
the past year have revealed that a
number of marine birds come close to
the shore post-monsoon. This makes
spotting of marine birds during in this
period a visual treat for enthusiasts.
Birders from the state have identified
approximately 350 species of both
residents and migratory birds at the
Cotigao wildlife sanctuary.
"The festival received positive response
last year and drew participation from
all over India. We are looking forward
to organising another year of natureloving.
The GBCN will play a major
role in conducting these bird trails,"
the official said.
India, Italy Leaders Hold Talks
Marking Thaw In Relations
NEW DELHI – Leaders of India and
Italy are holding talks and signing a
slew of agreements that mark a thaw in
their relations following the fatal 2012
shootings of two Indian fishermen by
Italian marines who mistook them for
pirates.
Talks between Italian Prime
Minister Paolo Gentiloni and his
Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on
Monday covered a wide range of topics
Suzuki Intruder
150 To Be
Launched In India
On November 7,
Images Leaked
In early October, Suzuki India had
sent an invitation about the launch of
an all new motorcycle on November
7, 2017. And now images of the same
have leaked online. These images
are of the the leaked brochure of the
Suzuki Intruder 150, which is a cruiser
motorcycle that might take on the likes
of the Bajaj Avenger 150.
Suzuki dealerships in India have
already started accepting bookings for
the all new Intruder 150 and deliveries
are expected to begin soon after its
launch. The Suzuki Intruder 150 is
expected to be priced around Rs 1 lakh.
Powering the Suzuki Intruder 150
is believed to be the 154.9cc singlecylinder
unit that does duty in the
Gixxer range. The power and torque
out of this motor is 14.8PS and 14Nm
respectively. While the state of tune
might be retained for the Suzuki
Intruder 150, the company might also
look at tweaking the performance to
make it more suitable for highways.
The Suzuki Intruder 150 gets LED
projector headlight, aerodynamic fuel
tank and LED tail light.
The Suzuki Intruder 150 will directly
compete against the Bajaj Avenger 150
in India.
including ways to deepen bilateral
economic and political relations.
With Gentiloni's visit, India and Italy
have cast aside their strained relations.
The two countries disagree on the
facts of the killing of the fishermen and
who has jurisdiction in the case. The
two Italian marines await the decision,
expected by about 2018, of an arbitration
court in The Hague on whether their
trial should be in Italy or in India.
Security Studies In Goa
Panaji, 30 Oct : The coastal state of
India is all set to witness a revolution
in the education industry as proposals
have been floated to set-up schools that
will solely focus on studies related to
security and the strategic angle to it.
The proposal has been put forward
by the Forum for Integrated National
Security (FINS), a think tank on
national security.
The state government is in discussion
with FINS regarding setting up
properly organised education system
to facilitate the learning of security
related strategic issues. FINS is the
group that holds the responsibility for
the national security. In addition to the
proposal made for setting up of schools
for security study, they have also
proposed to make Goa their permanent
venue for annual conferences held
each year.
This year as well, in the month of
October, FINS had organised a three
day conference on maritime security
at the South Goa Resort. The Goa
government is enthusiastic about
setting up the conference venue in
the state permanently and are in the
process of establishing a secretariat
here and have started consultation
with the Goa government. Vice
President of FINS, Dr Prabhakaran
Paleri said that CM Manohar Parrikar
has expressed his willingness to hold
the annual conference in the state for
the coming years.
statement.
The aqua park is a dynamic addition
to the entertainment facilities of
Hawana Salalah's tourism project.
"The Hawana Aqua Park joins
a variety of attractions developed
following extensive research to identify
touristic attractions that help solidify
Salalah's position as a fast growing
Arms Rules
To Boost
'Make In India'
Weapons
NEW DELHI: The government has
liberalised the arms manufacturing
policy with the aim to boost its 'Make
in India' initiative, doing away with
renewal of licence every five years,
allowing increase in capacity up to 15
per cent without its prior permission
and introducing a one-time licence fee.
The new Arms Rules, which came
into effect last week, also give a blanket
permission for manufacturers to supply
arms to state or central government
without seeking prior approval from
the Union Home Ministry, an official
statement said here today.
The move, which is aimed at
encouraging investment in the
manufacturing of arms, ammunition
and weapon systems in the country,
is also expected to generate more
employment in this field, it said.
Goan Lads Record New Spider Species
PANAJI: Meotipa sahyadri, a spider
species recorded from the Western
Ghats and found mostly in the forest
areas of Goa's hinterland, but new to
science, has been collected by Goan
student Dhiraj Halali and documented
by Siddharth Kulkarni and other
researchers.
It was Kulkarni who first spotted
the spider while he was a student at
Yeshwantrao Chavan (YC) Institute in
2012 at Satara, and started studying it.
The mystery around this undocumented
species which belongs to the Theridiidae
family of spiders, subsequently aroused
Halali's interest, a zoology student at
Chowgule College, Margao.
Research which followed over the
years revealed that this spider is found
in the Sahyadris, the Western Ghat
regions of Maharashtra, Karnataka,
Gujarat and Goa. Kulkarni named the
spider Meotipa sahyadri.
"Given the small size of these spiders,
particularly males, we conducted
scanning electron microscopy to reveal
the structures of the reproductive
organs," Kulkarni told TOI.
The research paper has been
published on the journal Zootaxa and
the new species name can be seen on
Lord Buddha's Relic To Put
Arunachal Pradesh Monastery
On World Buddhist Tourist Map
Lord Buddha's relic from Thailand to the Kongmu Kham or Golden Pagoda has put
this monastery in Arunachal Pradesh on the world Buddhist tourism map.
The Golden Pagoda is located in the
Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The district was formed in 2015 and is
the nascent district of the State. The
district is inhabited mainly by the Tai
Khamti indigenous people.
The relic was handed over by the
Sangharaja of Thailand to the
monastery on Monday. Thousands
witnessed the ceremony. A 13 member
Thai delegation had brought the relic to
India. Incidentally Sangharaja or the
Supreme Patriarch is the head of the
Buddhist monks in Thailand.
"The relic housed in the picturesque
Kongmu Kham will definitely result
in tourists specially Buddhists
from all over the world visiting the
monastery. It will further ties with
South East Asian countries" stated
Chowna Mein, Deputy Chief Minister,
Arunachal Pradesh. Incidentally the
State Government has been focusing
on tourism in the eastern part of the
State.
Arunachal Pradesh has 12 tourist
circuits across an area of 83,500 sq km.
The Golden pagoda falls under the
Tinsukhia-Tezu-Hayuliang circuit.
The Union Government has also
launched a Look East Policy of which
tourism is an important component.
The relic was enshrined in the Golden
Pagoda. The enshrining of the relic
has been sponsored by Chief Minister
Pema Khandu under the patronage of
The relic on display (pics courtesy Facebook)
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein.
Golden Pagoda is built on the lines
of Burmese architectural design. It is
spread over 20 hectares. The Kongmu
Kham boasts of an eco tourism
complex. The complex comprises of
4 special suits, eight executive suits,
two dormitories with a capacity of
20 beds each, a multi purpose Hall, a
restaurant, an administrative block
and an administrative block.
The State had received over 3.5 lakh
domestic and foreign tourists in 2016.
"This curated festival will exhibit
over a thousand paintings, sculptures,
photographs and prints from all
over the country and abroad. All
these works will be priced within an
affordable range of Rs 3,000 to Rs 1
lakh. Since our objective is to enthuse
the general public to appreciate,
connect and collect art, GAAF will
also provide a platform to budding
talented artists to display their works
alongside established names in this
field," Kerkar said.
First Rainbow
Pride Walk in
Panaji, Goa
Goa witnessed its first rainbow
pride walk last week in Panaji. The
walk was held for the first time in
the state and was attended by the
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) community in Goa. The
LGBT community took to the streets,
commencing the walk from the old
Secretariat building till Miramar beach.
The members of the LGBT community
face a lot of criticism in the society
are subjected to lot of discrimination,
without realising that even they have
right to the part of the so called society
and live freely. Dias said, “The walk
gave closeted members of the LGBT
community an opportunity to come out
in the open and speak out about their
sexual orientation. People should know
about the LGBT community here so
that they can extend their support, care
and love to them”.
The organising group will fight for
equal rights for the LGBT community
and bust various myths about them that
are commonly spread. Also discussion
about article 377 shall be done.
The rainbow pride walks started
about a decade ago with only 10
members and now witnesses the
participation of over 5000 members.
To kick start this event, A film festival
was held on Friday at Arpora.
'T' For Transgender
In Railway
Tickets Soon
Transgenders will now have the
option of identifying themselves as
the third gender with the Railway
Board modifying reservation forms
to provide the option ‘T’, besides ‘M’
(male) and ‘F’ (female).
The Railway Board in a letter to all
zonal railways has said that ticket
booking and cancellation forms will
be modified from the current option of
Powerful New Gene-Editing
Tools May Eradicate
Hundreds Of Diseases
CHICAGO: Scientists are altering a
powerful gene-editing technology in
hopes of one-day fighting diseases
without making permanent changes
to people’s DNA. The trick: Edit RNA
instead, the messenger that carries a
gene’s instructions.
“If you edit RNA, you can have a
reversible therapy,” important in case
of side effects, said Feng Zhang of the
Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard,
a gene-editing pioneer whose team
reported the new twist Wednesday in
the journal Science.
A genome-editing technique called
CRISPR has revolutionized scientific
research. It’s a biological cut-andpaste
tool that lets researchers spot a
gene defect inside living cells and use
molecular “scissors” to snip that spot,
Samsung Launches
Notebook 9 Pro
Convertible Laptop
With S Pen
Samsung has just announced its newest
convertible laptop 'Notebook 9 Pro'
at the ongoing Computex 2017 show
in Taipei. The laptop is touted to be
the upgraded variant of Notebook 9
series, with a 360-degree hinge and an
integrated S-Pen stylus.
The Notebook 9 Pro can be
interchangeably used as a laptop or
tablet. The main USP of the Pro laptop
is undoubtedly its S Pen device which is
capable of performing precision oriented
tasks like creative drawing and shading.
The S Pen can also support tilt function
akin to Microsoft's Surface Pen and it
works just fine with Windows Ink.
The smaller 13.3in model will come
with 8GB RAM while the larger 15.5in
model features 16GB RAM and AMD
Radeon 450 GPU onboard. Apart
from the varying RAM sizes, both the
Notebook 9 Pro models feature a bunch
of common specifications including a
256GB SSD, a microSD slot, a HDMI
port, a USB Type-C port, a backlit
keyboard and two standard USB ports.
Samsung is yet to divulge details on
the pricing or availability for the new
convertible laptop.
either deleting, repairing or replacing
the affected gene.
Researchers are using CRISPR
to try to improve crops, develop
malaria-resistant mosquitoes, grow
transplantable organs inside animals,
and develop treatments that one day
may help genetic diseases such as
sickle cell or muscular dystrophy.
There are challenges for medical
use. Because a change to DNA is
permanent, accidentally cutting the
wrong spot could lead to lasting side
effects. And DNA repair is harder to
achieve in certain cells, such as brain
and muscle cells, than in others, such
as blood cells — so targeting RNA
may offer an important alternative,
said University of California, San
Diego, professor Gene Yeo, who wasn’t
involved in Wednesday’s study. His
team is creating its own RNA-targeting
version of CRISPR.
The research is in its earliest stages,
requiring more work before it even
could be tested in animals. But San
Diego’s Yeo, who is using a different
Cas approach to target RNA, praised
the competing work. “It really tells us
that many Cas proteins can truly bind
RNA,” he said. “The smart thing to do
is to test a lot of them.”
WhatsApp ‘Delete for Everyone’ is easy
to use. Just keep in mind the you can
recall messages within seven minutes,
and no longer than that. Both recipient
and sender will get a notification when
messages get successfully deleted.
However, people won’t be notified if
deleting message for everyone was
unsuccessful. In this case, the receiver
might see or read your message.
To get started, just tap and hold the
message that you want to delete, in
chat window. Next, choose Delete from
the menu. You can select multiple
messages to delete for everyone as well.
Finally tap ‘Delete for Everyone’ and
you’re done. Once message is deleted
for everyone, you will get a message
that reads, “You deleted this message.”
The recipient, on the other hand,
will get a notification saying, “This
message was deleted.”
“Messages you successfully delete
for everyone will be replaced with
“This message was deleted” in your
recipients’ chats (*). Similarly, if you
see “This message was deleted” in a
chat, it means that the sender deleted
their message for everyone,” read
Creepy! Your Phone Is Telling Google What
You Are Doing In Real Life
Google is reportedly getting all the
information regarding what you do
offline. According to The Independent,
your smartphone sends data on your
physical activities to the tech giant.
The report says that sensors inside
your mobile helps Google monitor and
understand your real word actions
based on the movement of your device.
This basically means that the company
will know when you stand up or sit
down or sleep based on the times you
lift up or put down your smartphone. A
Reddit discussion reveals the process
based on an Android permission
Jio To Launch
Broadband, Tv
Services In Early 2018
Billionaire Mukesh Ambani owned
Reliance Jio Infocomm is set to launch
high-speed fibre to the home (FTTH)
broadband services by early next
year. The broadband services includes
television services as well as internet
in more than 30 cities, the Business
Standard reported.
Just like how Reliance Jio was
launched last year, Jio broadband will
also see similar lauch with premium
offers to woo customers.
The company will offer ultra-high
speed of up to 1 gigabit per second, settop
box as part of the package, which
will be a home entertainment hub –
offering TV channels, high-end gaming,
video on demand, sources said.
WhatsApp ‘Delete
For Everyone’
Feature Rolls Out
Globally: Here’s
How To Use
called “Activity Recognition”. This
report was posted by DuckDuckGo,
which suggested that the permission
helps developers to understand your
movements.
The Google Activity Recognition
feature is able to tell the programmers
when a user is walking, driving, or
riding based on ‘relative gravity
changes’. Also, the feature is so good
that even if you are walking inside a
train, Google will know. The API also
gives a feedback based out of 100 on the
accuracy of its findings. The higher the
number, the surer the developers are
on your activity.
Once you have granted the
permission to an app, Google sends the
collected data to them. Google says: “A
common use case is that an application
wants to monitor activities in the
background and perform an action
when a specific activity is detected.”
In order to check which apps have
got the permission for the Activity
Recognition feature, you need to revisit
all of them from the Settings Menu
in the mobile. It can be a time taking
process, but if you are concerned about
your privacy it is worth it.

Jokes Apart!
Identify the Guest
Once Birbal was invited for dinner by a
rich man. When Birbal reached there, he
found himself in a large crowd. The host
greeted him warmly and took him inside.
Birbal said, “I did not know that there
will be so many guests in this gathering.”
The host replied politely, “They are
not guests, Sir. They are my employees
except one who is the only other guest
here besides you. Could you tell who is
that other one guest here?”
“Maybe, I could. Tell them a joke, and I
will observe them.”
The rich man told the joke and
everybody laughed uproariously.
Perhaps this was the worst joke Birbal
had ever heard in his life.
Now the rich man asked Birbal, “I have
told the joke, now you tell me who is
the other guest here?”
Birbal pointed out towards a man and
said, “He is that other guest.”
The rich man was very surprised
hearing this that how could he
recognize the other guest.
He said to him, “You are right Birbal,
but how did you recognize him?”
Birbal said, “Because only employees
can laugh on such a joke. He was the
only person who did not even smile on
your joke, so I immediately recognized
him as the other guest.”
Loving Wife
John bought his new colleague, Peter,
home for dinner. As they arrived at the
door, his wife rushed up, threw her arms
around John and kissed him passionately.
“My goodness,” said Peter, “and how
long have you been married?”
“22 years”, replied John.
“You must have a fantastic marriage if
your wife greets you like that after all
those years.”
“Don’t be fooled! She only does it to
make the dog jealous.”

GOA IN NOVEMBER
2017: 5 REASONS
TO VISIT GOA THIS
of India’s most popular tourist attractions. No matter what time of the year it is,
Goa has something for all kinds of tourists and travelers. It is one place in India
where you will find a fine blend of backpackers, luxury travelers, honeymoon
walks and happy scooter rides around
