Melbourne looking
for series win over
Adelaide at home
Coming off a huge win against Cairns
on Thursday night, Melbourne United
will be looking to make it two from
two in Round 5.
After taking on the 36ers in their opening
two games, Melbourne knows what
Adelaide brings to the table and there’s
plenty to keep an eye on.
Adelaide sit just above Melbourne on
the ladder, however Melbourne will be
looking to take out the series after winning
their first two games against the 36ers
in Adelaide.
Melbourne’s big men Dave Andersen and
Tai Wesley will have their hands full this
week, both with the birth of a new addition
into their families, as well as Josh Childress
joining the 36ers line-up.
Childress is a proven performer in the NBL
as well as having just finished up at training
camp with NBA’s Nuggets so we know he
still has plenty of fire in him coming into
this season.
Melbourne United guards Casper Ware and
Chris Goulding both face a mouth-watering
matchup when they meet Nathan Sobey
and ex-Melbourne guard Ramone Moore.
Sobey is an athletic beast who continues to
improve and with Jerome Randle no longer
on the squad, he is handling a larger load on
the offensive end - and Sobey is more
than capable of this.
Moore has had a very strong start
to the season and looks to be discovering
his groove in the NBL, after an injury
interrupted time with Melbourne
last season.
As Melbourne fans know, Moore’s outside
shooting is dangerous and always poses a
threat.
Ware and Goulding have formed a strong
backcourt bond. After Goulding returned
from appendicitis, the pair has become
even more accustomed to one another’s
games which was evident on Thursday
night against Cairns.
Matchup to watch: Mitch Creek vs Casey
Prather
Mitch Creek’s importance to the Adelaide
36ers can’t be underestimated. The forward
is coming into his own in the league and
with his defensive prowess, provides crucial
one-on-one and help defence for the 36ers.
The two are both incredibly athletic athletes
who love to throw down a dunk or two.
Prather treated the Melbourne fans to this
athleticism on Thursday night and we’ll be
hoping to see more of it come Saturday.
Melbourne hosts fiery
week at training ahead
of double-header
The tempo was up and the intensity
was too as Melbourne United looked
to correct their recent struggles at
training on Tuesday.
Three straight losses and a -19 deficit
during third terms were front and centre
as coach Dean Vickerman pushed his
team through some fiery scrimmages
at the end of training.
One moment Vickerman was encouraging
key players to take their shots, the next
he was sending another to sidelines for
showing bad body language.
Words along the lines of “That is exactly
what don’t want” echoed across the court.
When one group or another had too
many breakdowns pushup penalties were
enforced although not too many to cause
any damage as Melbourne host Cairns
Taipans at Hisense Arena on Thursday night.
Melbourne is 2-3 after five games and
overcame 17-point margin against Brisbane
Bullets last Saturday night to storm back
and almost steal a win as Chris Goulding’s
half court shot hit the backboard then
went over the ring.
Vickerman wants his side to never have
to rely on a half court shot again.
“We looked at the fourth quarter against
Brisbane when we were desperate and I
loved the way that we played through
that period,” Vickerman said.
“We can’t do that for the whole game but we
intend on extending our pressure a little bit
more and putting ourselves in situations
where we are a little more uncomfortable.
“This group has an ability to cruise at
different times so we need to challenge
them with different structures that force
them to get out of their cruise mode.”
Vickerman admits his side had much to
improve on, especially during said third
terms, but he isn’t panicking with his full
group only coming together in recent weeks.
10 Game Day Program

While some critics have sighted lower than
usual scoring numbers from Casper Ware
and Chris Goulding (who has only just
returned recently from an appendicitis),
Vickerman said Ware’s defensive pressure
was outstanding and others needed to
follow his lead.
“We had a couple of games in Adelaide where
Casper said “I’m coming out for the first four
minutes and then sub me out as I’m going to
give everything so we can establish a lead”,”
Vickerman said.
“Those kind of trigger points can be key and
it’s something we want to see from him but
also have other people drive it as well.”
Melbourne centre Josh Boone said his side
had to lift in third terms.
“We have had these stretches where we
have been really good and a switch has kind
of flipped,” Boone said.
“We haven’t figured out how to get
that switch to flip but that is kind of how
it has been.
“That’s not a sustainable way of playing and
we need to come to practice every day, get
better and figure out how to get ourselves
in that mode all the time, we are definitely
taking those steps.”
Boone also cautioned against any panic.
“There is a slight amount of frustration but it
is still very early in the season,” Boone said.
“We are 2-3 [win-loss], it is not like we are
0-5 right now. The games we have lost we
have been in and we are talented enough
that when we are not at our best we can still
make it a game.
“Our defence hasn’t been great yet either
and hasn’t been sustained for a long period.”
11 Game Day Program

Goulding named in
Boomers line up
Melbourne’s own Chris Goulding
has been named in the Australian
Boomers team to compete in the first
two games of Australia’s FIBA World
Cup Qualifiers, including the game
hosted in Adelaide on November 27.
12 Boomers representing seven NBL clubs
have been chosen but the broader squad of
24 remains in contention to be selected for
future games in the qualifying process.
Three members of the Adelaide 36ers in
Mitch Creek, Matt Hodgson and Nathan
Sobey will represent the Boomers while
the Perth Wildcats (Angus Brandt and
Damian Martin), Sydney Kings (Jason Cadee
and Brad Newley) and Cairns Taipains
(Cameron Gliddon and Mitch McCarron)
feature two players.
Rounding out the side are Chris Goulding
from Melbourne United, Illawarra Hawks’
Nick Kay and Daniel Kickert of the Brisbane
Bullets.
“The quality of talent that we have to select
from is pleasing and reflects on the healthy
state of Australian basketball as well as the
NBL,” said Boomers coach, Andrej Lemanis.
“There are a lot of players putting their
hand up for selection and, in the end, we
have tried to keep some continuity from
the FIBA Asia Cup as well as adding two
Rio Olympians.”
While this team is set to represent the
Boomers through the first window of the
World Cup qualifiers in November, Lemanis
still has the broader squad at his disposal
during the coming month and beyond.
“The depth of the squad is important
because over the course of this campaign
the squad needs to remain fluid in terms
of players coming in and out.
“With this new format, we have the ability
to alter the team between game one and
game two of each window, as well as
for the future windows.
“Injuries and form will play their part and
the willingness of players to step in to wear
the green and gold and play in the manner
honouring the legacy of the singlet at a
moments notice is critical to our overall
chance of success.
“I cannot over emphasise the importance
of everyone in the squad – they are all
contributing to the success of the team.”
14 Game Day Program

The Boomers’ first contest will be against
Chinese Taipei on November 24 before they
fly home directly to face Japan in Adelaide
on November 27.
“It’s our first game of real consequence
on home soil since the 2015 Olympic
qualifiers,” said Lemanis.
“It’s a great opportunity for the Adelaide
fans to come out and see the national
team. Adelaide fans are always vocal and
passionate and know their basketball so
it’s going to be fun for sure.”
Thanks to the new FIBA qualification
process, Australian fans will have more
opportunities than ever to see the Boomers
in action.
Qualifying games will be held in Australia
consistently over the next 16 months and
the Boomers will compete in three windows
over a home/away series through November
2017 - July 2018 in their first steps towards
the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Their schedule is as follows:
Window 1- November 24, 2017: Chinese
Taipei vs. Australia (AWAY)
July 2, 2018: Philippines vs. Australia (AWAY)
For those unable to attend the game, a
landmark deal between FOX Sports and FIBA
will see every game of the Boomers lead-up
to the 2019 FIBA World Cup as well as the
World Cup itself broadcast on Foxtel.
The Australian Boomers team for the
first window of the FIBA World Cup Asian
