Sexual Assault and Gender Inequality
is the ‘trending’ topic in today’s
discussions, but dating back to
Biblical History is a story of King David and
Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11).
David was second King of Israel, 1055-
1015, B.C. and Bathsheba was the daughter
of Eliam and the wife of Uriah, a Hittite,
who was passionately devoted to his wife
and loyal to the King and his army and
country.
One spring season when kings go off to
war, King David remained in Jerusalem. As
he strolled around on the top of his roof,
he saw a very beautiful woman bathing.
He sent inquirers to find out about her.
The King knew whose daughter and wife
Bathsheba was when he sent messengers
to get her for him.
Bathsheba came to King David. King
David slept with Bathsheba. Bathsheba
conceived and sent word to King David
that she was pregnant.
Some may view King David’s behavior
towards Bathsheba as rape, others may
view it as adultery, and yet others may see
it as a consensual encounter.
When confronted with a parable by the
Prophet Nathan, King David acknowledged
his behavior as a transgression against God
(Psalms 51).
This ruler understood that every soul
comes from God! Every soul goes back to
God!
“Some may not believe in God,” you may
say. I get that. So, let’s examine “the law of
the harvest” in King David’s sown seeds.
King David’s baby with Bathsheba died.
His children, Amnon fell in love with his
virgin sister, Tamar, confided in his cousin
about his feelings; then plotted and raped
her. His son Absalom hated his brother
Amnon for the rape, and two years later,
ordered his men to kill him. Absalom slept
with King David’s concubines in a tent on
the roof in the sight of all of Israel, (Twitter
that!) and conspired to overtake the throne
from King David. The King’s army saw
Absalom, during his flight from the King’s
army, hanging in a tree from his hair. The
King ordered them not to harm his son.
Joab, captain of the army, ordered them to
kill Absalom. King David mourned.
You ask, “Where is the positive in all
of this?” King David and Bathsheba
conceived, birthed and reared King
Solomon, the wisest and richest king ever
to live. He lovingly and honorably cared for
his parents until their end.
