<strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Health</strong> is committed to reducing our ecological<br />
footprint. Sustainability is one of the four priorities of our<br />
2013-18 Strategic Plan.<br />
We recognise the compelling link between<br />
greenhouse gas emissions, climate change<br />
and the impact on our environment.<br />
<strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Health</strong> has committed to actively<br />
contributing to the implementation of<br />
the Victorian Government’s policy to be<br />
net zero carbon by 2050 and improve<br />
environmental sustainability.<br />
Eco Champions<br />
Committee<br />
The <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Eco Champions<br />
Committee aims to promote<br />
environmental sustainability throughout<br />
the organisation. The committee meets<br />
bi-monthly with a comprehensive and<br />
growing representation including clinical<br />
and non-clinical staff.<br />
Outcomes of the committee’s<br />
activities this year include:<br />
• Publication of green news articles which<br />
serve to highlight staff participation as<br />
well as support sustainability messaging.<br />
• Regular contributions to the internal<br />
staff newsletter.<br />
• Continuation of an awards program<br />
to recognise and incentivise<br />
sustainable engagement.<br />
• Development of training materials and<br />
displays to support staff education and<br />
promote environmental sustainability.<br />
• Representation of <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Health</strong> at the<br />
Victorian Green <strong>Health</strong> Round Table,<br />
Climate and <strong>Health</strong> Alliance Think<br />
Tank, Australian Nursing and Midwifery<br />
Federation Sustainability Conference.<br />
The new <strong>Monash</strong><br />
Children’s Hospital<br />
Food services<br />
The planned infrastructure to support<br />
the <strong>Monash</strong> Children’s Hospital for<br />
environmental design has been<br />
installed and commissioned.<br />
The introduction of a new food services<br />
model at the new <strong>Monash</strong> Children’s<br />
Hospital has seen a 100 per cent<br />
improvement in meal wastage. Meals are<br />
prepared just prior to consumption<br />
and only where required, eliminating<br />
the need for spare meals.<br />
In addition, an electronic menu<br />
management system has been<br />
implemented eliminating the need for<br />
over 35,000 printed menus per annum.<br />
Cleaning without chemicals<br />
This year, our cleaning without chemicals<br />
methodology was implemented in<br />
the new <strong>Monash</strong> Children’s Hospital.<br />
Steam and microfibre technology has<br />
been utilised to clean the new hospital,<br />
creating a safer environment for our<br />
paediatric patients and their families.
