12 | November 9, 2017 | The winnetka Current school winnetkacurrent.com Glenview students win Winnetka-Northfield Library summer award SUBMITTED BY AVOCA SCHOOL DISTRICT 37 Students on parade Pupils from all grades march in NSCDS Halloween procession On Oct. 2, students from Avoca West elementary school in Glenview eagerly gathered in the school’s library to receive recognition from the Winnetka-Northfield Library for their participation in the summer reading program. Avoca West students claimed the title in the inaugural year, with 45 students completing the program boasting a total of approximately 49,950 minutes of reading. Avoca students will be housing a creatively designed trophy, complete with lights and a fidget spinner, which was generated from the library’s 3-D printer. At the trophy presentation, students had the opportunity to share their favorite book titles with the librarians and celebrate their victory. Director of Youth Services for the Winnetka-Northfield Library, Sheila Cody, hopes that this program will strengthen partnerships between the Winnetka-Northfield library district and the local schools. From the Editor Nice being with the big leagues Jacqueline Glosniak jacqueline@winnetkacurrent.com Say whatever you want about Hillary Clinton — I’ll refrain! — but regardless of whether your opinion about her is favorable or not, you have to admit, it’s impressive a person of such political and celebrity status would wander up to small Winnetka to meet with American citizens. Earlier last month, when The Book Stall first announced they were selling a limited number of tickets Letters to the Editor Conflicting information for library renovations In mid-October, the Winnetka-Northfield Library posted drawings of a comprehensive Library Renovation Project on its website and on design boards at the library, and solicited public comment with the headline “Tell Us What You Think Below.” An announcement on Page 2 [Calendar] of the Oct. 26 edition of The Winnetka Current invites for Clinton fans to briefly meet with her for a few seconds and get copies of her memoir signed by her live, I knew the event was a can’t-miss in terms of coverage for both The Winnetka Current and my own professional experience. Don’t get me wrong — I don’t think anything less of the hyperlocal events I cover in Winnetka, Northfield and the near-west suburbs where I freelance. Covering municipal news, business openings and local people you should know are among the highlights of my job. I love showcasing neighborhood wonders so residents remain informed on the communities in which they chose to sleep, raise their families and spend their free time. But, as a journalist in the hyperlocal suburban the public “to come learn more and offer feedback” at a Library Open House on Nov. 1. But, the same Oct. 26 edition of The Winnetka Current contains a Request for Bids for the entire project [on Classifieds Page 28]. Bids are due on Nov. 14, and contractors are invited to a pre-bid meeting on Nov. 2. Being at The Book Stall on Oct. 30 was exciting for many reasons. It was exciting to cover a rare story opportunity to grace the cover of The Winnetka Current; it was exciting to be at an event which put Winnetka on the national map as the story was shared across the U.S.; and it was exciting to feel as though after years of wanting to do so, I was finally standing in a press area with the men and women whose names and bylines we’ve seen for years on our news pages and TV screens day and night. Standing in the cold with the crowd before the event made me feel staff and of the public, and the minutes of the most recent meeting, on Oct. 4, conclude with the statement that current designs “can move forward for public opinion and out to bid.” So, the bottom line is that the design of the project is a done deal, and the requests for further public comment and, presumably, consideration of any public comment, are a sham. Marc Hecht, Winnetka resident right at home, talking with people and sharing their stories with others, and standing shoulder to shoulder with camera crews and major outlet reporters validated that yes, my job as a local reporter is just as important as those with the big station names behind them. Hillary Clinton and those other news reporters are used to this routine, going to hundreds of press conferences and live events a year. It’s likely they’ll soon forget their stop in Winnetka. But me?
