New Trier falls just short of final four
THREE STARS OF THE
WEEK
1. Gillian Klise.
(above). The New
Trier junior had
27 kills over three
matches, helping
lead her team to a
sectional title and
a supersectional
appearance.
2. Quinn Boyle.
The Loyola
quarterback
completed 9 of 14
passes for 133
yards and ran 13
times for 68 yards
in a Loyola win. He
threw for two TDs
and ran for two
more.
3. Payton Hielscher.
The New Trier
junior setter
completed a
successful
campaign by
dishing out 68
assists over three
matches last
week.
New Trier came into the
season not knowing what
to really expect after being
knocked out in the regional
final in 2016.
On one hand, the team
brought back the majority
of its starters from last season.
On the other, the starters
were still somewhat inexperienced,
having been
only sophomores in the
previous year.
That experience proved
valuable as the Trevians
won their fourth sectional
title since 2010 and played
for another opportunity to
go down state when they
faced off with Crystal
Lake Central on Friday,
Nov. 3, in the Lake Zurich
Supersectional.
PRESSBOX PICKS
Game of the Week:
• Loyola (10-1) at Marist (11-0)
Other matchups:
• East St. Louis (10-1) at Mount Carmel (8-3)
• Lake Zurich (11-0) at St. Rita (9-2)
• Naperville Central (9-2) at Maine South
(10-1)
• Nazareth (10-1) at Sacred Heart-Griffith
(9-2)
• Wilmington (10-1) at IC Catholic (10-1)
• Providence (7-4) at St. Laurence (8-3)
That run came to an end
as the Tigers handed New
Trier a 25-22, 25-21 loss.
“We talked about that
we wanted to show up and
play and the girls can keep
their head up high because
they played well,” New
Trier coach Hannah Hsieh
said. “They just outplayed
us, they slightly outplayed
us. That’s a great
team, we’re not embarrassed
to say we lost to
them.”
Coming into a supersectional,
one would expect
two teams with over 30
wins each to battle. And
battle they did, as neither
team in the first set was
able to gain more than a
three-point advantage over
the other. And when one
of the teams, did, the other
would rally to tie.
61-20
• Marist 28, Loyola 21. The buck
stops here for the Ramblers.
Marist is just too strong
offensively for the Loyola
defense.
In a set that featured
12 ties, it seemed as if it
would always be the Tigers
who would break the tie.
That was until a net error
57-24
would end the set on
61-20
