Spartans finish fourth in conference meet
Brittany Kapa
Sports Editor
Glenbrook North coach
Robin Walker has coached
32 seasons with the Spartans.
In the last 26 years with
the team, the Spartans
have won the CSL conference
title 19 times, Walker
said, but this was not one
of those years when the
Spartans competed in
Vernon Hills on Saturday,
Nov. 4.
And for her, that’s OK.
“For our girls that were
fully rested and tapered …
we had 100 percent lifetime
bests,” Walker said.
“So, this was their season
best and lifetime best
and to be at this point, for
them, I’m really, really
happy.”
GBN finished fourth
scoring 275, which was
highlighted in a competitive
200-medley relay
race, swam by Maggie Li,
Ashlyn Remien, Ellen Gilbert
and Tiffany Qiao, the
team took fourth and was
less than three seconds behind
the first-place finishers.
Qiao had a couple races
where she found herself
just out of the top spot, but
for her that’s right where
she wants to be at this
point in the season. Qiao
finished second in the
200-yard individual medley
race and just behind
Vernon Hills’ Alexsandra
Skatchkov.
“I’ve raced against her
before so it’s not the first
time we’ve locked horns,”
Qiao said.
Qiao is confident that
when it comes to next
week’s sectional race that
she will drop even more
time.
“I’m half-tapered, so
we’re one week in,” she
said. “I feel pretty okay
with my taper. That wasn’t
my end-of-season best; it
was probably like two seconds
off. I’m really happy
with it how I am now, and
I know with another week
of rest I can be a lot faster.”
Teammate Maggie Li
had some personal accomplishments
to celebrate as
well. She took second in
the 100-yard butterfly race
finishing in 1:00.16.
“I’m not going to swim
it next week at sectionals
because there are other
people, like Tiffany [Qiao]
and Ellen [Gilbert], who
are faster than me,” Li
said. “So, this is the last
time I’m going to swim
it this season. It’s pretty
good for the last time I’m
going to swim it.”
During the whole day,
the Spartans were nothing
but happy for their
teammates as each one hit
personal bests at the meet,
Walker said.
“I think the positivity is
contagious,” Li said.
“It was nice to be with
each other today,” Walker
added. “I’m so happy for
them. It really brings me
so much joy to watch them
and how hard they have
worked and have it pay
off.”
Walker said that the
team’s swimming IQ was
