with David Napoli
FREE FREE FREE
David Napoli is a senior at
Lockport Township High
School and was a defender
for the boys soccer team.
How did you get started
playing soccer?
I first started playing soccer
when I was 6 or 7. I
started off in the [American
Youth Soccer Organization]
leagues and came up through
travel ball with Homer
Hawks, which I met most of
my friends on the Lockport
team. I went to Raiders [Futbol
Club], which [is where]
I learned most of my skills
probably from. Now, I’m
with Chicago Fire South and
played it all four years for
high school.
What is it about the sport
that you love?
I love it so much because
every game you get a new
opportunity to prove yourself,
make a difference and
there is a new spark and
your teammates. You try
and go out there and win every
game to the best of your
ability.
What is the biggest thing
you’ve learned from coach
Beal?
From coach Beal, the
biggest thing I’ve learned I
think it’s probably to play
your heart out and play the
best you can. Anyone can
be better than anyone else
on any given day, so there
is no underdog, there is no
favorite in every game. I’ve
learned a lot of technical
skills, and he’s been great at
preparing us for games and
preparing us to be the best
player we can be.
What is your best memory
from senior year?
My best memory was
probably winning the PepsiCo
[Showdown] championship.
It was a great experience,
and last year we came
up short again. We lost to
Fenwick in the championship.
This year, we got the
opportunity to come back
and win the tournament.
What did that feel like to
win?
Well, coming up short
was great motivation. We
came in, we weren’t seeded
... That served as motivation
for us to show up and prove
that we deserved a spot to be
seeded. It proved that we can
be a better team than everyone
though we could be.
What is your favorite pumpup
song before a game?
I would say bands would
be The Amigos and Imagine
Dragons. Those would be
two of the biggest ones. We
listen to a lot of Spanish music;
it gets us in the groove
before games.
What was a funny moment
from this season?
We had a lot of funny moments.
The funniest person
on the team is [Zacary] Fox.
Specifically funny moments,
I guess just before each
game, he would just get us
all in the mood to play and
ready to have some fun. We
all kind of did that to each
other, and we all kind of
22nd Century Media File
Photo
helped each other get ready
for each game.
Do you have plans to play in
college?
I would like to play club.
I’m trying to go to a four-year
university like Iowa, Iowa
State or the University of Illinois,
but some of them don’t
exactly have soccer teams
competitively, but they do
have soccer clubs. I’m going
to try out for it, but it’s not
my main focus for college.
Do you have any hobbies
outside of soccer?
I like playing fantasy
sports. Our team has a fantasy
premiere league. I like to
go out with friends and play
other sports. Sometimes go
[footgolfing]. It’s like golf,
but you kick a ball into a
hole. The nearest place is in
Schererville, Indiana.
What is your favorite food?
My favorite food — that’s a
tough one — I would have to
with a nice steak dinner with
mashed potatoes and broccoli.
