FISH Food Pantry celebrates reopening
Pantry finds new
home in Lockport
Township building
Jason Maholy
Freelance Reporter
The Lockport/Homer
FISH Food Pantry has been
somewhat transient in its
more than 30 years of existence,
having been housed
in a number of buildings as
it was forced to move from
place to place on for one reason
or another.
The volunteer organization,
which each month helps
feed approximately 1,000
people from 250 to 300 families
who live in Lockport and
Homer Townships, now has
a space it can truly call home.
The pantry, after being out
of service for nearly a month,
reopened Oct. 30 in its new
digs at Lockport Township
Hall, 1463 S. Farrell Road.
The 2,200-square-foot space
was carved out of a room in
the new town hall, which was
formerly Parkview Christian
Church’s Lockport campus.
An army of volunteers in
five weeks performed demolition,
built walls, installed
new flooring, ran electrical
wiring and painted, among
other work, to transform a
vacant space into what is
the pantry’s permanent location.
United Sertoma donated
funds that paid for three
glass-front coolers and two
large stainless steel freezers,
greatly expanding the pantry’s
capacity to store refrigerated
and frozen foods.
The distinct smell of new
interior construction still
lingered in the air when the
pantry introduced its new
home to the public at an open
house held Thursday, Nov. 2.
The room is smaller than the
pantry’s space at the Christian
Ministry Center, but the
layout is more open and conducive
to easier browsing.
Pantry President Jim Naylor
noted the space the pantry
now occupies had been set
aside when Lockport Township
purchased and moved its
headquarters into the former
church building. The Township
moved into the structure
in January.
“Township Supervisor Ron
Alberico always envisioned
the food pantry being here,
so when they moved into the
building, he left the space for
us,” said Naylor, a Homer
Glen native who now lives
in Lockport. “The Township
was wonderful enough to say,
‘We have a space here, you
guys can come here.’ And
then the need came when we
did have to get in here, so it
worked out.”
That need arose in September,
when the Christian
Ministry Center, 604 E. 9th
St., sold the building that
had housed the pantry for the
past 15 years. The pantry was
founded in the early 1980s as
a one-woman operation and
was originally in the basement
of a Lockport church.
The food pantry is an entirely
volunteer organization,
and it depends on donations
of time, money, food and
resources to function. Six
volunteers on the morning of
the open house unloaded 258
boxes containing six tons of
food collected by Konow’s
Corn Maze in Homer Glen.
Volunteers take inventory,
stock shelves and will at the
new location escort clients
through the pantry and help
them pick out goods. They’ll
even take food to the homes
of people who because of
medical issues or other situations
be unable to visit the
pantry.
“We couldn’t do it without
them; the volunteers are
what keep us going,” said
pantry volunteer coordinator
Elaine Nyquist.
The volunteers who unpacked
the load from Konow’s
— which had been
collecting donations since
mid-September during its
annual Corn Maze autumn
festivities — hustled for 90
minutes running boxes from
an 18-foot trailer into the
building. One of the volunteers
used his truck to tow the
trailer from the farm, which
is at the southeast corner of
167th Street and Cedar Road,
to the Township building.
“They do whatever they
can to help,” Nyquist said of
the pantry’s 45 or so regular
volunteers.
Two of those people who
have lent their time and effort
to the pantry are George
Guglas, Jr. and his son,
George. In addition to both
of them helping with the
renovation work — the elder
is a construction worker
and skilled tradesman — the
younger George earned his
Eagle Scout badge by directing
a project to build five relatively
large shelving units
for the pantry.
George is a member of
Boy Scout Troop 50, which
has for many years conducted
an annual donation drive
that supplies the pantry with
about 1,500 pounds of food.
One day last year, while at
the pantry delivering donations,
he noticed the existing
shelves were inadequate for
storing the pantry’s heavier
items.
“I said [building new
shelves] would be a good
idea for a service project, and
it transformed into an Eagle
project,” he said.
Guglas directed about 25
other workers, including fellow
scouts and professional
carpenters, to build, assemble
and paint the approximately
300-pound units. Each can
support thousands of pounds,
a fact the boys learned by
Volunteers (left to right)
Debbie Price, Elaine Nyquist
and Christina Dabrowski,
all of Lockport, bring back
donations that guests
dropped off during the open
house.
laying and standing on the
shelves to test their strength.
“He comes from a long
lineage of tradesman,” said
George Jr. “I’ve brought him
on numerous jobs around the
neighborhood ... he works
with his hands. I told my
sons since an early age: If I
can teach you to work with
your hands, you’ll never go
hungry ... unless your hands
are busted.”
Guglas put his Eagle Scout
project on hold for roughly
a year to coincide with the
pantry’s anticipated move
out of the Christian Ministry
Center. The project’s purpose
was more important to him
than earning his Eagle badge.
“This is something bigger,”
he said. “This is helpful
to the community, this helps
our neighbors.
The two Georges have
signed on to continue their
volunteer efforts at the pantry,
and they will help stock
shelves and perform other
tasks.
“It felt good giving back to
the community,” George Jr.
said. “That’s what it should
be about.”
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
The Homer Glen Public
Services & Safety Committee
held what will be its last
monthly meeting of 2017 on
Nov. 1.
Due to the timing of meetings
around the holidays, the
committee will not reconvene
until January, though
it will be continuing to look
into traffic issues in several
parts of the community.
Among issues discussed at
the meeting, the committee
agreed to begin investigations
into traffic and speed
complaints along Beaver
Lake Drive and the Golden
Oak subdivision. Specifically,
Golden Oak residents
want stop signs to be erected
at several intersections along
Hiawatha Drive to prevent accidents,
although none have
occurred in the area to date.
One traffic issue that the
committee did vote to take
definitive action on is the installation
of stop signs at the
corner of 163rd Street and
Syd Creek Drive.
“We’re going to ask the developer
to get those installed
as soon as possible,” said
Committee Chairperson and
Village Trustee Beth Rodgers.
“The fact that there is no
sign there is a safety hazard.”
In addition to the signs
at Syd Creek, the committee
will also be considering
adding similar signs at Blue
Mag Road and Circle Park
Court along 163rd Street.
Building code approval
The committee also gave
approval to send the issue of
updating the building code to
Mayor George Yukich and the
full board at this week’s Village
Board meeting that was
slated to be held Wednesday,
Nov. 8. The code will be discussed
as a workshop item,
although no major changes
are expected. Some minor
changes that could be enacted
would relate to fire prevention
measures and sprinklers in
new construction.
Potential tree-trimming
policy
Finally, Homer Township
Road District Commissioner
Mike De Vivo informed the
board that his department is
looking into creating an official
tree-trimming policy,
patterned after similar rules
in neighboring communities.
De Vivo stated that most
Villages with similar policies
cut trees in the winter months
— when there are no leaves
— and the change seems less
drastic to residents.
No decision on such a policy
would be made until after
the first of the year, but De
Vivo noted that he thought
the committee should know
“because we have to trim
back the trees for visibility
and safety purposes.”
Hadley students lead donation drive for troops
Max Lapthorne
Contributing Editor
It’s peanut butter jelly time
at Hadley Middle School.
About 120 students, part
of six homerooms designated
as the Blue Team, are
spearheading a donation
drive with the goal of collecting
1,000 jars of peanut
butter and jelly to send to
troops via Operation Care
Bre Schultz (left) and Trinity Muszynski show off the peanut
butter and jelly costumes that are to be used to promote
the peanut butter and jelly drive for Operation Care
Package. Max Lapthorne/22nd Century Media
Package.
“That’s the two things
they can’t get, is peanut butter
and jelly,” sixth-grader
Trinity Muszynski said of
the troops stationed overseas.
“[The Blue Team] is
sponsoring it, and then the
whole school is bringing in
jars of peanut butter and jelly,
because our goal is 1,000
jars.”
The donation drive began
Monday, Nov. 6 and is to
run through Nov. 17. All the
members of the Blue Team
were placed in different committees,
each with its own set
of tasks to help the donation
efforts, according to Blue
Team teacher Jennifer Donahue.
Muszynski and fellow
sixth-grader Bre Schultz
decided on a unique way to
spread the word of the donation
drive beyond the walls of
Hadley.
“We’ve decided to get it
in the newspaper, and try to
put it out there to reach our
goal,” Muszynski said.
Some students have been
mentioning the drive during
the morning announcements
at school, some have decorated
the collection boxes,
others have made up flyers
to be sent home to parents
and a group designed posters
to hang in the hallways.
There also may be some students
making appearances in
peanut butter and jelly costumes
throughout the school.
“We’re going to also put
boxes [around] and put flyers
in the teachers’ mailboxes,”
Schultz said.
During the two-week collection,
there are to be boxes
in every homeroom for students
to drop off their donations.
At the end of each day,
Schultz and Muszynski will
empty the donation boxes
and tally up how many jars
each homeroom collects, and
at the end of the donation
drive, the winning homeroom
will be awarded a prize.
With nearly 1,000 students
and about 80 faculty members,
the goal of 1,000 jars
in two weeks is attainable if
they get donations from everyone,
Muszynski said.
“I think if everybody
brings in a few jars, and we
get donations, I think [we
can reach the goal],” she
said.
While there is a prize on
the line for students at Hadley,
anyone looking to donate
peanut butter and/or jelly is
welcome to do so, as well.
Donations can be brought
to the main office at Hadley
Middle School. Glass jars
cannot be accepted.
Muszynski and Schultz
agreed on their favorite part
of being involved with the
peanut butter jelly drive.
“Meeting our goal, and
making our soldiers happy,”
Schultz said.
Homer Glen resident
Ashley, an Orland Park
“It’s a progressive heart
condition, where your right
“It causes and triggers arrhythmias.”
one-room schoolhouse. But
roughly 70 years has made a
world of difference, both in
terms of building construction
and the geography.
Those enamored by history
and the way things used
to be can still experience life
circa World War II by visiting
Schmuhl School.
The next Schmuhl School
open house is 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 11, at its current
location at 20733 S.
Schoolhouse Road in New
Lenox. Open houses typically
are held the second
Saturday of each month.
“There are people from
the historical society that are
there to answer questions
and talk a little bit about the
school,” said Carla Koepke,
a member of the New Lenox
Area Historical Society
Board of Directors.
The field trips include
books and recess toys from
the 1930s, as well as history
lessons on the schoolhouse.
“At the end of our history
lesson, we do some compare
and contrasting of how this
is like schools [now] and
how it is different,” Koepke
said. “Our goal is for kids
to enjoy history and to embrace
the school.”
FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Police say senior citizen
robbed Orland bank on
Halloween morning
A man described as in his
late 60s to early 70s allegedly
demanded, received
and left an Orland Park bank
with an undisclosed amount
of money the morning of
Oct. 31.
Officers responded at
10:31 a.m. to a holdup alarm
at the Fifth Third Bank at
15330 Harlem Ave., according
to a press release issued
the same day by the Orland
Park Police Department.
The man reportedly entered
the bank, handed a teller
a note demanding money,
received cash from the teller
and exited. He never displayed
a weapon, and no one
was injured, police said.
He was described as
white, with gray hair, and
between 5-foot-10 and
6-foot-2.
Orland Park police reportedly
are investigating the
bank robbery in conjunction
with the FBI.
Anyone with information
about the alleged offender is
asked to contact Orland Park
police at (708) 349-4111.
Security cameras captured
images of the man who allegedly
robbed the bank.
Mayor responds to
vandalism as more cases
appear
More vandalism was discovered
in Mokena Oct. 30
at Hecht Park, 9310 Birch
Ave., the same day Mokena
officials issued a press release
to address prior vandalism
from Oct. 22.
In an emailed statement
issued Oct. 30, Mokena
Mayor Frank Fleischer responded
to graffiti discovered
Oct. 22 on four public
traffic signs and one private
business sign. The private
business sign additionally
was tagged with a satanic
numeric reference. In theses
cases, swastikas were spray
painted on the signs.
In what originally was
described as “what appears
to be an isolated case,”
Fleischer expanded on comments
he made during the
Oct. 23 Board of Trustees
meeting, in which he would
not comment directly on the
matter of hate symbols being
drawn on Village signs,
because he did not want to
give the perpetrators “their
two minutes of fame.”
“I’m not going to talk
about some of the stuff, because
it is so stupid it doesn’t
even deserve comment,”
Fleischer said at the time.
In the Oct. 30 press release,
Fleischer said, “I’ve
never felt it appropriate
to attribute undue attention
to cowardly acts such
as this that are generally
performed for that very
reason: to give the promulgator
of the act his or her
two seconds of fame. That
having been said, let me be
very clear: The Board of
Trustees, the Village Clerk
and I in no way condone or
accept this type of behavior.”
The Lincoln-Way East
season end with a 25-16,
25-18 loss to Marist Oct.
We worked out all the time
together, and never complained
about anything.
“But she went to bed one
night and just didn’t wake up.
She went into cardiac arrest
and passed away in her sleep.”
Since her death, Matt has
worked with the doctors in
the cardiovascular genetics
group at Lurie Children’s
Hospital of Chicago and
Northwestern University to
perform genetic sequencing
on Ashley’s DNA.
“They find cases like this,
708.326.9170 ext. 31
l.healy@22ndcenturymedia.com
and they take the person’s
DNA, sequence it and see if
there are any specific genes
that are attributed to these
types of conditions,” Matt
said.
To help the doctors, Matt
started soliciting donations
through an email campaign
last year. He also started
working on other fundraising
opportunities.
For example, Ashley was
a teacher at McClure Junior
High School in Western
Springs. Every year, the
school holds a community
race around Memorial Day.
One of her colleagues put
together a walk to hold in
conjunction with the race to
benefit the hospital.
“We were able to raise
about $40,000 through donations
and the sale of T-shirts
and merchandise,” Matt
said.
This past summer, he also
decided to start a separate
foundation to honor his late
wife to make the fundraising
process easier.
“All the money we raise
will still go to Lurie’s for
the genetic cardiovascular
research,” he said.
Earlier this year, Matt and
a friend of Ashley’s were
floating ideas for fundraisers
for the fall. Ashley went to
the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, and she
often went to barn bashes.
From there, the two started
working with Barn and
Company to set up the event.
Matt is estimating approximately
250 attendees,
but he said the goal will be
to get to 300. The event is to
feature a raffle and a silent
auction through the evening.
The silent auction items
include things such as tickets
to Bears and Blackhawks
games, signed jerseys by the
Blackhawks, and weekend
stays at cottages and condos
in Michigan and Florida.
“We’re going to have a
great turnout, and we want to
make it fun to honor Ashley
and generate a lot of funds to
send over to Lurie’s, so they
can continue their research
and hopefully find a cure
for this disease,” Matt said.
“Right now, ARV is very
hard to detect. Even when
they do, there are very limited
treatments for it. They
are hoping to find genetic
causes for it, so they can find
therapy and counseling for
families who are diagnosed
with this condition.”
Tickets for the event are
$75, and that includes drinks
and appetizers from 7-10
p.m. For more information
Just this past Friday, I
needed to take a day of
bereavement to mourn
the loss of my uncle, who
recently passed away from
cancer.
While attending the
funeral — and the wake the
evening before — it was
touching to see the support
that came for my uncle from
his family, friends, coworkers
and other acquaintances
from over the years. It
spoke loudly and clearly to
the tremendous impact he
had on so many.
Each day was a great tribute
to him, and the warmth
in his personality and conversations
and sense of humor
will be sorely missed.
When we lose someone, the
grieving process inevitably
takes time. That hole or void
never really goes away, but
we cherish the memories
with that person and cling
to our faith, support system
and what we can.
But besides simply just
being sad or having our
down moments over a love
one’s passing, we eventually
live on for them, hopefully
greatly inspired by their example.
Seeing the difference
my uncle made has motivated
me to do more, to try
to be better, to keep aspiring
to usher that positive change
both for my loved ones and
for strangers alike.
Using such a blueprint,
we can shine the light they
once did for us and for others.
Another example of this
is Homer Glen resident Matt
Jurjovec. His wife, Ashley,
died from a rare heart disease
last year.
I cannot begin to fathom
what that was like for him
losing his wife when she
was only 31. I cannot make
sense of the unbearable
grief that comes with such
loss.
But despite this extreme
hardship, Jurjovec honors
his late wife by continuing
to help raise funds for
research to one day better
combat diseases like the
one which took Ashley so
prematurely. He has helped
spearhead a fundraiser
happening this upcoming
Saturday, Nov. 11 for that
very reason, and you can
read more about their story
on Page 6 of this issue.
Amid all the hurt, this
man forges ahead, dedicating
much time and effort,
and he continues to make a
difference. How admirable
is that?
Yet, we won’t always
be strong when we lose
someone. We will need time
to mourn. We will have bad
days.
But on the days we are
able, we try our best to pick
up the pieces. We don’t let
death win; rather, we use
the rest of our time to make
our own positive contributions
— like Jurjovec has
done — to honor those who
came and left this world
before us.
Trivia Mania benefits Special Olympics Illinois
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
Community members,
leaders, families and friends
tested their knowledge Saturday,
Nov. 4, at the Lockport
Police Department’s
sixth annual Trivia Mania
trivia night benefitting Special
Olympics Illinois.
“We put together this
event because we want to
raise money and awareness
for Special Olympics,” said
Debbie Schenk, patrol officer
for the Lockport Police
Department who organized
the event.
Trivia Mania is just one of
several fundraising events in
which the Lockport Police
Department participates to
benefit the Special Olympics,
Schenk said.
“We do a lot of things. We
do the Culver’s event where
we wait tables, we sit on the
roof top of Dunkin’ Donuts,”
she said. “… We’re on pace
to raise about $22,000 this
year.”
Kicking the evening’s
festivities off, 23-year-old
Special Olympics medalist
Rikki Kirsch, of Shorewood,
gave a presentation about the
Special Olympics and its relationship
with the Lockport
Police Department.
Then, 13 teams competed
in this year’s trivia challenge,
the most teams to participate
in the event yet, Schenk said.
The competition consisted
of 10 rounds, each with 10
questions. Lockport Sgt. Brian
Phelan acted as the emcee
for the evening.
Although some of the
teams were made up of regular
trivia players, others were
excited to try something
new. Andrew Kahn, a Homer
Glen resident, attended the
trivia benefit night for the
first time on Saturday.
“It’s my first time. I had
some friends who told me
about it, and it sounded like
fun,” he said. “… It’s for a
good cause, and I thought it
would be neat to support the
cause and have a good time
doing it.”
In addition to trivia, the
event included dinner and
several raffles, which featured
items donated by local
businesses and community
members. However, the
cause remained at the core of
the event.
“It’s important to me that
residents, police, everybody
understands the importance
of what Special Olympics
is about,” Schenk said. “It’s
a fun event, but also is for a
good cause. … And the great
thing is, because of all of the
donations, everything goes
to [Special Olympics].”
Among those who attended
were several community
leaders. State Rep. John
Connor said he’s attended
the trivia benefit every year
since it began.
“This is a wonderful
event,” he said. “For me,
what’s significant this year is
I’m playing against my former
trivia teammates from
the State’s Attorney’s Office.
I’ve attended the Special
Olympics trivia contest and
donated since it started.”
Also in attendance were
Superintendent of Taft
School District 90 Pamela
Kibbons and her husband,
Shawn Collins.
“I’m here because benefitting
children and supporting
their opportunities [to further
their] education is at the
heart of what we do in education,”
Kibbons said.
Collins, battalion chief
at the Buffalo Grove Fire
Department, added: “Obviously,
I came to support my
wife, and the Special Olympics
is a great cause. Coming
to support them is a great opportunity.”
St. Bernard’s welcomes new pastor, music director
Submitted by St. Bernard’s
Parish
The Rev.
Joe McCormick,
OSA,
was officially
installed as the
new pastor for
St. Bernard’s
Parish in McCormick
Homer Glen.
The Rev. McCormick was
born on the south side of
Chicago and was raised and
educated in Elmwood Park,
where his family moved
when he was a toddler. He
attended the Augustinian
seminary high school and
college and received a master’s
degree from Loyola
University and another from
Catholic Theological Union
in Chicago. He was ordained
as an Augustinian Priest in
1977.
His most recent assignment
was as the pastor of
two neighboring parishes:
St. Ann Parish and Our Lady
of the Lake Parish in southwest
Michigan. Throughout
his career, he has been
known for his successful
efforts building up parishes
and creating truly involved
communities. He is also
known as an excellent homilist
and loving shepherd of
his people.
The assignment of the
Rev. McCormick to St. Bernard’s
Parish marks a significant
change, as the parish
will now be administered by
the Order of St. Augustine,
or Augustinians, as they
are popularly known. In the
Joliet Diocese, Augustinian
priests and brothers staff
Our Mother of Good Counsel
Parish in Homer Glen
and St. Jude Parish in New
Lenox. The order also staffs
Providence Catholic High
School in New Lenox. In the
Chicago archdiocese, Augustinians
staff St. Rita High
School and three parishes on
the southwest side.
with David Napoli
FREE FREE FREE
David Napoli is a senior at
Lockport Township High
School and was a defender
for the boys soccer team.
How did you get started
playing soccer?
I first started playing soccer
when I was 6 or 7. I
started off in the [American
Youth Soccer Organization]
leagues and came up through
travel ball with Homer
Hawks, which I met most of
my friends on the Lockport
team. I went to Raiders [Futbol
Club], which [is where]
I learned most of my skills
probably from. Now, I’m
with Chicago Fire South and
played it all four years for
high school.
What is it about the sport
that you love?
I love it so much because
every game you get a new
opportunity to prove yourself,
make a difference and
there is a new spark and
your teammates. You try
and go out there and win every
game to the best of your
ability.
What is the biggest thing
you’ve learned from coach
Beal?
From coach Beal, the
biggest thing I’ve learned I
think it’s probably to play
your heart out and play the
best you can. Anyone can
be better than anyone else
on any given day, so there
is no underdog, there is no
favorite in every game. I’ve
learned a lot of technical
skills, and he’s been great at
preparing us for games and
preparing us to be the best
player we can be.
What is your best memory
from senior year?
My best memory was
probably winning the PepsiCo
[Showdown] championship.
It was a great experience,
and last year we came
up short again. We lost to
Fenwick in the championship.
This year, we got the
opportunity to come back
and win the tournament.
What did that feel like to
win?
Well, coming up short
was great motivation. We
came in, we weren’t seeded
... That served as motivation
for us to show up and prove
that we deserved a spot to be
seeded. It proved that we can
be a better team than everyone
though we could be.
What is your favorite pumpup
song before a game?
I would say bands would
be The Amigos and Imagine
Dragons. Those would be
two of the biggest ones. We
listen to a lot of Spanish music;
it gets us in the groove
before games.
What was a funny moment
from this season?
We had a lot of funny moments.
The funniest person
on the team is [Zacary] Fox.
Specifically funny moments,
I guess just before each
game, he would just get us
all in the mood to play and
ready to have some fun. We
all kind of did that to each
other, and we all kind of
22nd Century Media File
Photo
helped each other get ready
for each game.
Do you have plans to play in
college?
I would like to play club.
I’m trying to go to a four-year
university like Iowa, Iowa
State or the University of Illinois,
but some of them don’t
exactly have soccer teams
competitively, but they do
have soccer clubs. I’m going
to try out for it, but it’s not
my main focus for college.
Do you have any hobbies
outside of soccer?
I like playing fantasy
sports. Our team has a fantasy
premiere league. I like to
go out with friends and play
other sports. Sometimes go
[footgolfing]. It’s like golf,
but you kick a ball into a
hole. The nearest place is in
Schererville, Indiana.
What is your favorite food?
My favorite food — that’s a
tough one — I would have to
with a nice steak dinner with
mashed potatoes and broccoli.
Girls Volleyball
Normal’s size too much for Celtics in sectional final
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
Providence girls volleyball
coach Lisa Muys wasn’t
the least bit surprised that
Normal University captured
the title at the Class 3A Pontiac
Sectional.
That came when the Pioneers
defeated Manteno 25-
20, 25-17 on Nov. 1 to win
their first sectional championship
since 2011. Normal
U-High (27-10) faced the
host Titans in the Tinley
Park Supersectional on Friday,
Nov. 3.
“That Normal team is
a good team,” Muys said.
“They are tall, physical and
they are good. I don’t mind
being beaten by a team that
is good.”
Unfortunately for Muys
and the Celtics, that’s what
happened. They were defeated
by Normal U-High
25-16, 25-16 on Oct. 30 in
the semifinals of the Pontiac
Sectional.
“It was a tough matchup,”
said Muys of facing
the Pioneers. “We didn’t
know them, but they were
much bigger than us. They
also have a good setter who
has very good hands. The
matchup was just tough for
us.”
The loss ended the campaign
for Providence (21-17)
in the sectional semifinals
for the third-straight season.
The Celtics last played for
a sectional title in 2005 in
Class AA. They last won one
when they captured the second
of two straight in 2001.
Still, this season they won
a regional for the third consecutive
year after winning
one (2010) in the previous
nine seasons. The three
straight regional championships
is the first time since
2000-2002 that Providence
has captured three in a row.
“We had a good season,”
Muys said. “We finished
third at the Rich East Tournament
[on Sept. 23] and
third in the Oak Lawn Invite
[on Sept. 16]. We beat Lincoln-Way
West early in the
season but lost to Lincoln-
Way Central. We defeated
Loyola, which was a nice
win. We had some really
good matches in going three
with some teams like [Joliet
Catholic Academy] and
Wheaton St. Francis.
“We had a team of five seniors,
all of which started at
some point, 10 juniors and a
sophomore. We had a lot of
defensive players, and only
one girl that is 6-foot.”
The Celtics graduate five
seniors. They are: middle
blocker/right side hitter Rachael
Dion, libero Megan
Kulpinski, libero/outside
hitter Olivia Smagala, setter/
right side hitter Keely Tess
and outside hitter Emma Urchell.
But the 10 juniors and
a sophomore are expected
back.
Tess, who is the only
6-footer on the team, and
sophomore outside hitter
Izabela Gorys made All-
Conference in the GCAC for
Providence.
Muys, who worked as a
pediatric nurse for many
years, has four children
who all played volleyball at
Sandburg, as well as the club
and collegiate levels. She
graduated high school from
Andrew in 1982. Then, she
embarked on an outstanding
volleyball career at DePaul
University, where she still
holds records and was inducted
in the school’s Hall
of Fame in 2006.
She’s coached at the club
level for years, but she
hadn’t coached high school
since a lower-level coaching
stop at Andrew in 1988.
“It was a lot of fun,” she
said. “The girls were awesome.
We had a great team
bond. Also, my assistant
coach, Kyle Klaver [who is
the Providence boys volleyball
coach] was a huge help
to me. Really, everyone was
so helpful, positive and supportive.
I look forward to being
back next season.”
Meyer’s major effort helps ensure quarterfinal appearance
Celtics coast past
Normal West at
home in Round 2
Chris Walker
Freelance Reporter
Steven Meyer’s initials
are “S.M.,” so perhaps it
makes sense that he played
like “Superman” during
Providence’s Saturday, Nov.
4 Class 6A second-round
game against Normal West
in New Lenox.
During a game in which
the Celtics’ offense found
ways to move the chains and
put points on the scoreboard,
Meyer did his part to ensure
that the Wildcats did little
of the same, as the Celtics
rolled to a 33-7 victory.
They advance to this Saturday’s
quarterfinal game
against St. Laurence (8-3),
which beat Hinsdale South
the same day.
Meyer had the trifecta of
big-time defensive plays,
blocking a field goal, making
a last-second tackle that
saved a touchdown and then
intercepting a pass in the end
zone on that same drive. He
did just about everything.
Plus, he did this after intercepting
two passes and
scoring a touchdown the
previous week in the playoff
opener against Richards.
One has to wonder if even
Lincoln-Way West (9-2) hosts Batavia (10-1)
kryptonite can stop Meyer.
“It’s been a good time to
put everything together,”
Meyer said. “In the regular
season, you’re working on
techniques and everything,
and then you get pumped up
for the playoffs, and, if you
do the little things, the big
plays are easy to make.”
Providence (7-4) took a
rare 2-0 lead less than three
minutes into the game when
Logan Anderson and Peter
Spesia made a tackle in the
end zone on a mishandled
snap for a safety. The play
came after Anderson’s brilliant
53-yard punt that was
downed at the Normal West
1-yard line.
“That was a great punt by
Logan, and you could feel
the momentum,” Meyer said.
“You could see from their
sideline that their mood had
dropped, and we had them
right where we wanted them,
especially at home with the
crowd going crazy and feeding
off their energy.”
The Celtics established
their running game early
and jumped ahead 16-0 on
touchdown runs of 6 yards
and 4 yards from quarterback
Caden Kalinowski (17
carries, 101 yards, 2 TDs;
8-of-11 passing, 87 yards).
“I have gotten more comfortable
Normal West (8-3) finally
broke through the Providence
defense on Adriel
Fussell’s 11-yard touchdown
run with 2:31 left in the first
half, and the Wildcats looked
to get even closer with a
field goal seconds before
the break, but Meyer’s block
protected Providence’s lead
at 16-7.
“We were just one or two
Normal West coach Darren
Hess said. “It’s a game of
one play here or there that
we experienced [on Saturday].”
The Celtics wouldn’t allow
the Wildcats any gamechanging
plays the rest of
the afternoon, nor would
they surrender any more
points. In its seven victories,
Providence is allowing less
than 11 points per game.
Providence continued to
increase its lead in the second
half, getting a 32-yard
field goal from Eduardo
Favela midway through the
third quarter, and then an 80-
yard touchdown run from
Gavin (21 carries, 160 yards)
with 4:05 left in the quarter
to make it a 26-7 game.
to respect that,” Providence
coach Mark Coglianese said.
“Big plays are huge, especially
this time of year.”
Providence’s defense was
in lockdown mode throughout
the second half, shutting
out the Wildcats.
“We had made a lot of
mistakes in the first half, and
we were beating ourselves
with mental mistakes,” Meyer
said. “Coach Cogs said it
comes down to playing with
heart. He said we were up
on the scoreboard, but we
should be up more, so we
played with more heart and
came out victorious.”
The Celtics added a 1-yard
touchdown run from Jake
Magurany with 2:40 remaining
in the game to complete
their scoring.
Porters pack sticks together at state meet
Tim Cronin, Freelance Reporter
Call them the Porter Pack.
They run together, pushing
each other to faster times.
Lockport Township’s girls
cross country team ran that
way Saturday, Nov. 4, at Detweiller
Park.
They weren’t fast enough
to make an impact in the 3A
race, finishing 23rd in the
25-team field, but without a
standout runner, there was
likely no other way to run.
“It came about in the summer,”
Porters coach Erin
Truesdale said of the strategy.
“They were naturally
running, training as a pack
in the same tempo and everything.
We used to run like
that, but in the last couple
years, we had a couple frontrunners
that I couldn’t hold
back.”
One was Morgan Bollinger,
who graduated last
year.
Speed like Bollinger
boasted — she ran last
Lockport Township freshman Megan Mitchell sprints down the home stretch Saturday,
Tim Cronin/22nd Century Media
year in 17:15 — was missing
from this year’s group.
Sophomore Ola Skibicki
was the fastest Porter on
Saturday, finishing 130th in
18:26. The next four Porters
were within 11 seconds —
Abbey Kozak at 18:28, Kate
Wojcikiewicz a second later,
Anna Kozak at 18:34 and
Madison Polinski at 18:37.
But that 11-second spread
for the first point-scoring
Porters, surpassed only
by New Trier’s 10-second
spread, began too far back to
make an impact.
“Every week, it’s a different
seven [to run in a
race], a different five [scoring
points],” Truesdale said.
“They’re very close in training.
I’d have liked to have
the pack a little bit further
up here. But every week, I
had a different No. 1 runner.
If someone else had a bad
day, someone else stepped
up. Nobody was being held
back.”
Skibicki’s disappointment
in the outcome was evident.
“I didn’t get the time I was
hoping for,” Skibicki said.
“I wanted to break 18 [minutes].
The start was a little
scary, because you want to
get toward the front.”
She had run 18:06 in the
3A sectional at Granite City,
with the next four under
18:21 on a dry course with
a section in asphalt. Slower
times were to be expected on
the soft and muddy Detweiller
course.
“It’s really hard to stick
together because there are so
many people,” Skibicki said.
“But if we’re able to stick
together and go fast, it helps
you get a good team place.
We were excited, weren’t
that nervous. Excited to finally
race. We’d been nervous
all day.”
Freshman Megan Mitchell
(170th, 18:47) and senior
Aubrey Frederich (187th,
19:07) also ran for Lockport.
“It’s a young team,”
Truesdale said. “That was a
thing I was a little bit worried
about at the beginning
of the season. Where is my
leadership going to come
from? But they stepped up.
And being here bodes well
for the future.”
Glenbard West’s Katelynne
Hart won the individual
race in 16:22, repeating
her title jaunt of last year.
Naperville North won the
team race with 87 points to
Yorkville’s 117, with Lyons
Township third at 184.
Boys Cross Country
Porters find bumpy road at state finals at Detweiller Park course in Peoria
Tim Cronin, Freelance Reporter
Lockport Township’s
boys team hadn’t been to the
IHSA’s cross country championship
as a team in eight
years.
The runners who represented
the Porters at Detweiller
Park were in elementary
school in 2009.
They learned plenty Saturday,
Nov. 4 — the hard
way. The Porters, after a surprising
second-place finish
in the sectional at Granite
City, were last among the 25
teams in the 3A boys field.
“This is all new to them,”
Porters coach Tom Razo
said. “It’s hard for a team
to come here after not being
here and run well.”
Razo didn’t have the benefit
of experienced runners
like Dan Hart and Zac Sartori,
his aces who led the
Porters to a third-place finish
in 1999, Razo’s first year at
the helm.
Perhaps by next year, someone
like Marc Schelli, the junior
whose time of 15:38 led
the Porters, will assume that
role. He also led the Porters
in the Plainfield Central race
early in the season and the
SouthWest Suburban Conference
Blue Division race preceding
the regional.
Schelli finished 133rd
overall and 102nd among
team participants. Downers
Grove North won the 3A
team fight with 73 points,
its highest counting runner
20th.
Senior Cade Musich, who
led the Porters in the sectional
in Granite City, was 155th
in 15:48, followed by junior
Donovan Paske (162nd,
15:54), sophomore Ross
Cronhom (188th, 16:10)
and sophomore Brendan
Diamond (195th, 16:17).
Sophomores Jacob Hinchley
(208th, 16:42) and Aidan
Pajeau (209th, 16:42) were
at the back of the field.
What the Porters have going
for them is their youth.
Not only was Musich the
only senior among the seven
Razo selected to run at Detweiller,
10 of his 12 runners
are underclassmen. Now,
adding in the First to the Finish
race early in the season,
where they finished 23rd,
they’ve got plenty of experience
at the mecca of state
cross country.
Jorie Beaumont has embarked
on a new adventure.
Beaumont, a former
member of Lockport Township
High School’s girls
cross country team, wanted
to find a college that was
both Christian-based and
offered a degree in nutrition
that was far away from
home.
“I love adventuring, and
I love traveling,” Beaumont
said. “I haven’t gotten a big
opportunity to do that so far
in my life. So, my parents
said that if I got an opportunity
to go somewhere far,
and it worked out, that I
could go.”
During her search for
colleges, Beaumont came
across Ouachita Baptist
University, located in Arkadelphia,
Arkansas, and
while there was no track
team, they did have a small
cross country team. She
went on a campus visit and
fell in love. Ouachita has
a river running through it,
lots of trees everywhere and
a plethora of camping and
hiking spots. They also offered
a nutrition degree. It
marked all of her requirements
for a college, and the
fact the university was in
another state was appealing
to Beaumont’s sense of adventure.
Just as important to Beaumont
was the type of team
she would be on, and she
liked that the other women
were religious and that
coach Steve Bostick was
supportive.
“I really wanted a coach
that would be super supportive
and just really encouraging,”
Beaumont said
about her final criteria for
a college. “[Bostick’s] focus
is more on the team and
having fun but also working
really hard.”
This is Bostick’s second
year coaching the cross
country team at the school,
and he does double duty
by coaching the women’s
swimming team, as well.
“I also coach swimming,
and on swimming, I have
about 45 kids,” Bostick
said. “So, to drop down to
six to 10 girls, you really
kind of get to know them
better. It’s not just about
athletics; we’re trying to
help these young women
become young adults. It just
gives you more of that oneon-one
time to spend with
them and help them through
college and all the stressors
that come with growing
up.”
Even though the team is
smaller — only 11 women
are listed on the roster for
the 2017 season — that
smaller number appealed to
Beaumont.
Bostick is trying to build
the cross country program
at Ouachita, which is
why when Beaumont
reached out to him, he was
a little surprised.
“We’re down in Arkansas,
and I never really
thought about recruiting in
the Illinois area,” he said.
“[Beaumont] reached out to
me, and it was kind of a nobrainer
just because of her
times and her academics.”
Beaumont was awarded
both an academic and athletic
scholarship from the
school.
“It was a pretty easy decision
on my part, and I was
excited to have an athlete of
her caliber,” Bostick added.
Beaumont trained hard
all summer, and Bostick expected
big things from the
freshman.
“We did add three pretty
good freshman this year,
with Jorie being one of
them,” Bostick said.
Beaumont said she was
excited to jump into school
and cross country and get
the season started.
“I like just jumping in,
getting ready and starting
really quickly,” she said.
As for her goals she had
for the season, she just
wanted to be a contributing
member of the team and
bond with her teammates.
“I want to be able to be in
the varsity runners and just
to be up there,” Beaumont
said. “More importantly, I
just want to be able to contribute
to the team and encouraging
and be able to be
able to create a great team
atmosphere; that’s the most
important thing for me.”
Jorie Beaumont was one of the top runners for the Lockport
Township girls cross country team before graduating this
year and moving on to run at Ouachita Baptist University in
Arkadelphia, Arkansas. 22nd Century Media File Photo
