'Can You Hear Me in Heaven?'
Area author uses
life experiences
to help children
experiencing loss
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
Loss and grief are unavoidable
parts of the human
experience, but those experiences
are never distributed
evenly amongst us.
For some who have experienced
a tremendous
amount of loss, that grief
can be overwhelming — especially
for a child.
Anna Ames, who teaches
yoga and meditation at the recently-opened
Hart Wellness
Center in Frankfort, experienced
tremendous loss from a
young age and said those experiences,
although traumatic,
are what led her to write and
publish “Can You Hear Me in
Heaven?” a children’s book
that addresses loss.
“One of the things that I
was hoping to accomplish
through all of that was to
turn my negative trauma
events into something positive
both personally and,
hopefully, on a larger scale
to help others,” Ames said.
“It just seemed wasteful to
have it just be trauma for the
sake of trauma.”
By writing a book appropriate
for children, Ames
said she hopes she can help
children learn to cope with
loss and grief at a young age,
which can in turn help them
deal with those emotions
throughout their lives.
“If we capture that sense
of trauma early within children
and transform it into
something that is more comforting
— knowing that the
relationship doesn’t have to
die just because somebody
left their physical body — I
think that leaves an impression
for how they handle
death coming into their older
years and even as an adult,”
Ames said.
While hoping to help others
experiencing grief as she
did, Ames said the writing
process has been a “therapeutic
tool” for her for many
years. She has kept journals
since she was twelve years
old, which amounts to 43
books so far.
“[Writing] has been what
has helped transform my
grief, among many other
things, into something functional,
something reflective
[and] something positive,”
said Ames, who said she
knew she wanted to write
a children’s book after her
mother died eight years ago.
The Park Forest native has
a background in early education,
psychology and English,
which she studied in college
before pursuing a career
in clinical massage therapy.
Ames, who had previously
worked as a physical
therapy technician, said she
was drawn to the holistic approach
to health and saw it as
a way to help prevent disease
rather than just treating it.
Her writing is just one
part of the holistic approach
Ames takes to a healthy lifestyle.
She also teaches meditation
and yin yoga, a type of
yoga practice that involves
holding a series of deepstretching
poses each for one
to five minutes.
Both practices are a departure
from more widelyrecognized
flow yoga, which
can provide an intense cardio
and strength workout.
“Meditation I would consider
to be the foundation of
everything else,” said Ames,
who said writing and journaling
falls into the category
of meditation and the two
are what helped her write
her book.
Although meditation may
not be considered by most
to be a practice for children,
Ames said a practice
of mindfulness — a similar
