was married to an American. He was a keen<br />

sailor who wrote <strong>The</strong> Riddle of the Sands and<br />

smuggled arms into Ireland in 1914 for the<br />

Volunteers. He was a passionate Republican<br />

and despite being the secretary to the rebel<br />

delegation that negotiated the Treaty he<br />

joined the irregulars during the civil war.<br />

Sneeringly known as the 'Englishman'<br />

behind his back he was executed by the Free<br />

State government in November <strong>1922</strong> for<br />

illegally owning a pistol. Ironically the<br />

weapon that cost him his life had been a gift<br />

subsequent enquiry criticized the police's<br />

actions and the Deputy Commissioner of the<br />

DMP, William Harrell, was forced to resign.<br />

Redmond encouraged his Volunteers to<br />

answer the call to arms in 1914, and despite<br />

some British resistance they formed the bulk<br />
