Ready for Diwali!<br />

October has been a quiet month in school,<br />

mostly because we have been on half term<br />

break, which I’m sure everyone enjoyed. Although<br />

we haven’t been in school much this<br />

month we have still managed to collect a<br />

spectacular amount of rice for the Hand to<br />

Hand foundation, which year 6 took to them<br />

on Thursday October 12.<br />

Moving onto the eventful month we have<br />

ahead of us. The prefects and the school<br />

committees have been busy organising many<br />

different events and activities which the students<br />

of GIS can take part in.<br />

Our services prefect, Mara, has been extremely<br />

busy organising Hallowe’en for primary,<br />

which will take place during the afternoon<br />

of October 31. Alongside Halloween, our Creativity<br />

prefect, Erica and our Activities prefect,<br />

Rachel have been busy organising a<br />

Cultural Significance talent show with the<br />

Languages department which will be taking<br />

place on the afternoon of <strong>November</strong> 1.<br />

We are also celebrating the traditional Thai<br />

festival, Loy Krathong on Friday <strong>November</strong> 3,<br />

where we will be making Krathongs and<br />

watching traditional Thai performances - performed<br />

by our students at GIS.<br />

Anjali, our Languages prefect has been busy<br />

organising the traditional Indian festival, Diwali,<br />

with our Sciences prefect Khushi and<br />

classmate, Vamsi. Diwali will take place on<br />

the evening of <strong>November</strong> 7. The performances<br />

are done by our students and teachers.<br />

We will also be treated with some Indian cuisine<br />

which will be sold by the parents who<br />

have volunteered to make food for our Diwali<br />

celebration.<br />

Our Humanities department will<br />

also be taking some students on<br />

a history trip to Kanchanaburi to<br />

watch the Remembrance Day<br />

parade at the graveyard. There<br />

will also be an assembly which<br />

will take place in honour of<br />

Remembrance Day on <strong>November</strong><br />

10. We will also be collecting<br />

donations for the poppy appeal<br />

during the month of <strong>November</strong> up<br />

until <strong>November</strong> 11.<br />

Our annual Poppy Appeal is<br />

underway.<br />

The appeal, which raises<br />

money for veterans of<br />

armed conflicts and their<br />

families, is held each year<br />

ahead of Remembrance<br />

Day. Poppies, wristbands,<br />

rulers and fridge magnets<br />

are now available from the<br />

Front Office and around<br />

school.<br />

Members of the local Royal<br />

British Legion branch spoke<br />

to Secondary students to<br />

explain the meaning of the<br />

appeal. A per centage of<br />

funds raised goes to help<br />

Thai families.
