Assessment: Formal analytical essay of
character and context
Unit 3 – Heroes
Students will read Robert Cormier’s novel,
Heroes in its entirety and will complete full
class notes about character, setting,
context and theme. They will practise,
develop and revise the following skills:
The use of literary terminology to
improve analytical writing
Understanding of how authors use
language to create ‘shades’ in
character in particular
Note-taking and planning skills
Formal essay writing

Unit 4 – Julius Caesar
Students will read and watch Shakespeare’s
Julius Caesar in its entirety and form a clear
understanding of the plot, characters and
context. They will practise, develop and
revise the following skills:
Understanding the structure and
content of a Shakespearean play
Engaging with Shakespearean
language and being able to write
about it analytically
The importance of form in literary
analysis
Note-taking, annotation and
planning skills
Writing about extracts of text in
close detail and linking to the wider
text
