The Gift of Life My lovely friend Sarah lives up the road in Greenhill. She is very chatty, outgoing, likes playing board games – and she needs a new pair of lungs. Sarah has cystic fi brosis, a genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and, as time goes by, makes it harder to breathe. She doesn’t go out and about without her oxygen tank. I really, really don’t want Sarah to be one of the 500 people who die each year while waiting for a transplant! She makes this world a better place. So this is a bit of a personal plea – please consider signing up to the NHS Organ Register if you haven’t already. The more who sign up, the more likely it is that Sarah and the 6,500 or so others on the UK Transplant Waiting List will have their lives (or sight) saved. Sarah has been waiting for two years so far. I realise that organ donation can be an emotive subject, and one that people who have recently lost their loved ones don’t necessarily want to think about. But if you sign up to the register and discuss your wishes with your family now, it will be easier for them to consider donating your organs if the worst should happen. In September, 13-yearold Jemima Layzell made the news for donating her organs to a record eight different recipients, including fi ve children. Obviously, her family were devastated to lose her (she died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm). But because they had happened to discuss organ donation with her two weeks before her death, they knew this was what she would have wanted, and they felt proud that so much good had come out of her death. Please go to www. organdonation.nhs.uk to register, or phone 0300 123 23 23. It’s a very simple process, and you can do it at any age. But you don’t have to die in order to save lives! Blood donation is another really vital way in which you can regularly give others the gift of life. You only give blood three or four times a year, it takes an hour of your time, and you get free biscuits… what more can I say?! The people who work in the blood service are in my experience always friendly and very professional, and they really make it easy. The nearest blood donation centre to us is the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton near Meadowhead, but you can also donate at the donor centre on Church Street in town. Every time I go I think of the people I know who have needed a transfusion at some point in their lives. It’s very fulfi lling to think that I can help others in similar need at so little cost to myself. AniMalcolm by David Baddiel Do o you really want to miss out on reading this amazing book? I’m sure you don’t, so listen here... I am a big fan of reading. Some of my favourite authors are Enid Blyton, David Walliams and Roald Dahl. Recently I have discovered David Baddiel. I have just fi nished reading his book AniMalcolm. AniMalcolm is the story of a boy called Malcom. Malcolm doesn’t like animals, which is a problem because his family love them. Whilst on a school trip, Malcolm gets hypnotised by a goat. The book then follows Malcolm as he turns into a whole lot of different animals and has loads of exciting experiences. My favourite part of the book was when he turned into a chimp and saved his little brother from the other chimps. The book is very funny. David Baddiel is very good at telling funny tales. The way he tells it makes it very easy to imagine a picture in your head of Malcolm and his animal friends. The story gets going straight away from chapter one and David Baddiel’s writing keeps you hooked all the way through to the last line. I never got bored! I felt like I really knew Malcolm and how he was feeling as he had his adventures. The ending of the book was brilliant, but I’m not going to tell you what happens because you need to read it for yourself! I would highly recommend this book to anyone of any age. AniMalcolm is the second book I have read by David Baddiel. I fi rst read The Person Controller, late last year, which was also very good and I really enjoyed reading it. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into another one of his books soon!
