Joint government effort focuses
on Small Business Saturday
The City of Lockport, the Lockport
Chamber of Commerce, the Lockport
Township Park District and Lockport
Township Government have collaborated
for the past three years to bring awareness
to the Small Business Saturday movement
during the annual Christmas in the Square
event, and the 2017 season celebrates the
fourth year of the joint effort.
This family-oriented event full of holiday-themed
activities is to take place from
1-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Central
Square, 222 E. 9th St. in Lockport.
In addition, attendees are treated to a
goody bag full of promotional items from
Lockport’s local businesses to encourage
shopping small, shopping local and shopping
Lockport.
The coalition is also celebrating the second
annual Passport to Christmas in the Square
program, in which local downtown businesses
will open their doors and host family
activities to connect with residents and
encourage shopping local. Passports can be
picked up at Central Square and at participating
businesses. They can then be stamped
and exchanged for entry into a raffle.
Embers one of Lockport’s bright spots
after rising from building’s ashes
Located in the heart of Lockport, Embers
Tap House is one of the area’s most
popular spots.
Embers Tap House was born in June
2015, with its opening at the very start of
Canal Days. The Volz Building sat empty
for eight years after a fire destroyed the
building, leaving a vacancy in the revitalization
of downtown Lockport. Through
a collaborative effort with the community,
Embers rose from the ashes to become an
anchor on State Street.
Employing more than 75 people from
the community, designed and built from
all local contractors, with materials
sourced from local businesses, Embers is
here for the community and continues to
give back to the community. The unique
and historical ambiance creates the perfect
backdrop for the next formal event or
the next casual drink with friends.
For those looking for a unique and versatile
private space to host the next party,
celebration, bash or formal event, Embers
Banquet Center offers the perfect solution.
Embers’ naturally historic yet chic
A Christmas Wagon is slated to be
available to ride to stops in town, and the
entire downtown Lockport area will be
alive with the holiday spirit.
The Christmas in the Square event also
kicks off a season of holiday shopping. Continuing
the initiative through the holiday season,
participating Lockport businesses will be
offering a unique special or free gift to potential
customers as a thank you for choosing to shop
local, shop small or shop Lockport. A list of
participating businesses and their promotions
will be available at the Christmas in the Square
event, on the City of Lockport website (www.
cityoflockport.net), the Lockport Chamber of
Commerce website (www.lockportchamber.
com) and in this publication.
Cervical disk replacement at Illinois Spine & Scoliosis
Center preserves range of motion, shortens recovery time
Whether it’s moving
boxes of decorations or
rearranging furniture to
accommodate guests, the
holidays can be a time of
heavy lifting. That means
many will be at risk of
sustaining back and neck
injuries.
“The easiest way to cause
an injury is not keeping the
core muscles in shape,”
said Dr. Kris Siemionow,
chief of spine surgery and
assistant professor of orthopedics
and neurosurgery
at the University of Illinois
in Chicago. “The most
common cause for a spinal
injury is overuse. Often,
when you overexert yourself,
your muscles fatigue,
which left unrested, can
lead to worse injuries such
as strains, pinched nerves,
or even breaks.”
One common ailment
is a disk herniation. This
painful condition is caused
by problems with the rubbery
disks between the individual
vertebrae of the
spine.
“A herniated disk is extremely
common,” said Dr.
Anthony Rinella, founder
of the Illinois Spine &
Scoliosis Center. “It’s often
caused by repetitive
motions that involve looking
up. Disk herniations
in the neck are a common
cause of pain radiating
toward the shoulder and
down the arm.”
Fortunately, there are
treatment options available.
Patients often are
successfully treated with
conservative management
options, such as pain
medication, therapy and
injections, but a small percentage
of people with this
condition will eventually
need surgery. Traditionally,
this procedure involved
taking out the problematic
disk and fusing the
remaining disks together
with metal hardware.
While this fusion process
provides spinal stability, it
also can limit the patient’s
range of motion. A newer
procedure, called cervical
disk replacement, has
solved this problem. Like
the standard cervical fusion,
this surgery involves
removing the disk to relieve
pressure on the nerves. But
instead of a metal plate,
surgeons insert a flexible
piece of plastic.
“The biggest benefit is
that this maintains motion
of the neck in that area
where normally a fusion
procedure would weld
the two bones together,”
Siemionow said. “The
cervical disk replacement
basically functions similar
to a joint replacement that
maintains motion.”
While the procedure
has been around for some
time, it is relatively new in
the United States.
“It took time for there to
be adequate research and
for insurance companies to
support the new technology,”
Rinella said. “Current
studies suggest this is
a major step forward for
cervical spine surgery, perhaps
the biggest step in the
past 30 years.”
Along with preserving
range of motion, there
are other benefits to the
procedure. Cervical disk
replacements typically
have a shorter recovery
time than a fusion procedure.
Patients often go
home the same day and
are completely healed in
4-6 weeks. There are also
fewer follow-up appointments
needed.
This recovery time is
also more comfortable for
the patients, because no
immobilization devices,
such as neck collars, are
required. Compared to
metal, the plastic device
used in cervical disk replacement
puts less pressure
on the disks above
and below it, which helps
prevent arthritis or degeneration.
Perhaps most importantly,
the procedure
quickly improves the patient’s
quality of life by
reducing their symptoms.
“Patients usually see immediate
improvement in
their radiating pain symptoms.
There’s a very high
rate of success compared
to other surgeries,” Rinella
said. “In patients that do
need surgery, we find that
this new technology is
very promising. And we
are one of the few spine
surgeons using this advanced
technology.”
Lockport Resource Center builds traditions
While some holiday traditions
go back decades or generations,
new traditions always are evolving.
So it is with the Lockport Resource
Center, as the team continues
to grow as Lockport’s
community resource, and home
to the longest continually operating
thrift and resale shop.
Though in only its sixth year of
operation, the Resource Center
continues to make a difference
in the community, one person at
a time.
Store Director and Board
Member Anne Magosky explains
the store’s oldest tradition,
a glass jar filled with Hershey
Kisses
“The store opened on Valentine’s
Day 2012, so we passed
out Kisses,” Magosky explains.
“The jar was one of our first donations.”
Another tradition is the perpetual
Bag Sale. What started
as a means to reduce seasonal
overstock has become a mainstay
of the Resource Center’s
strategy. Store volunteer Kit
Lindblom explained that the
idea of paying a single price
for a bag and being able to shop
until the bag is full can ease the
mind of customers with limited
resources.
“We don’t need to worry
about the price of each individual
item and can focus on what
the client’s need is,” Lindblom
said.
The recent addition of the
Pass It On Insider bag has taken
the mission to another level.
The reusable bags bear the
Lockport Resource Center logo,
as well as the store tagline #passiton.
The bag is purchased for
$5 and can be filled with nearly
anything in the store. Each refill
is also $5.
Store manager Mary Wehle
explained, “With our focus on
reusing and repurposing, it only
made sense to have a reusable
bag.”
On special sale days, the bags
can be refilled at a discounted
price.
Of course, the holiday season
is filled with tradition. Store
volunteer and Board President
Cean Magosky has started his
own traditions of Black Friday
and Boxing Day. During Black
Friday, the Santa Bag Challenge
is offered to any shopper
and features filling a 25-gallon
trash bag for only $25. Boxing
Day is celebrated the day after
Christmas, and shoppers are invited
to bring a box to fill for a
$5 donation. For those who do
not have a box, the store usually
has plenty.
Perhaps the newest tradition
is the Transformation Scholarship.
Any Lockport resident
can apply for any educational
need. Barb Lindblom sits on the
Scholarship Committee and explained
that previous recipients
have used this scholarship for
college, junior college and even
Oasis tuition.
“The goal is to provide the
recipient and their family an
opportunity to transform their
life, change the story,” Lindblom
said. “We focus on people
and families trying to work their
way to success and out of the
cycle of hopelessness.”
Proceeds from the Pass It On
Thrift Shop are used to fund the
many missions of the Lockport
Resource Center, including the
Transformation Scholarship,
Emergency Relief Loans and
the shop itself as a mission.
Magosky explained, “We
keep our prices low as a way
to help on the front lines of the
community. So many of our clients
are starting or rebuilding
their lives, and having a place to
shop and feel part of the community
is important. We hear it
so many times from our customers.”
This holiday season, consider
adding the Lockport Resource
Center to your list of holiday
traditions as a shopper, donor or
volunteer.
Examining the effects of
age-related hearing loss
South Suburban Hearing
Health Center specializes
in age-related hearing loss.
This is the loss of hearing
that gradually occurs
in most of us as we grow
older. It is one of the most
common conditions affecting
older and elderly adults.
Approximately 1-in-
3 people in the United
States between the ages
of 65 and 74 has hearing
loss, and nearly half of
those older than 75 have
difficulty hearing. Having
trouble hearing can make
it hard to understand and
follow a doctor’s advice;
respond to warnings; and
hear phones, doorbells and
smoke alarms. Hearing
loss also can make it hard
to enjoy talking with family
and friends, leading to
feelings of isolation.
Jonathan Wright, a specialist
at South Suburban
Hearing, said that agerelated
hearing loss most
often occurs in both ears,
affecting them equally. Because
the loss is gradual, if
people have age-related
hearing loss, they may not
realize that they lost some
of the ability to hear.
But research has linked
untreated hearing loss to
significant issues that affect
peoples’ lives in many
ways.
Dementia and hearing loss
Seniors with hearing
loss are significantly more
likely to develop dementia
over time than those who
retain their hearing.
• Mild hearing loss — 2
times more likely to develop
dementia
• Moderate hearing loss —
3 times more likely to
develop dementia
• Severe hearing loss — 5
times more likely to develop
dementia
Mental health and hearing
loss
Hearing loss results in
social isolation. Adults
with untreated hearing loss
tend to withdrawal from
engaging with family &
friends.
Adults 50 and older with
untreated hearing loss are
more likely report depression,
anxiety, anger and
frustration, emotional instability
and paranoia, and
are less likely to participate
in social activities than
those who wear hearing
aids.
Can one prevent agerelated
hearing loss?
At this time, scientists
do not know how to prevent
age-related hearing
loss. But people can
protect themselves from
noise-induced hearing loss
by protecting their ears
with ear plugs or ear muffs
from sounds that are too
loud and last too long.
How can people tell if they
have hearing problems?
People should ask themselves
the following questions.
If they answer “yes”
to three or more of these
questions, they could have
a hearing problem and may
need to have their hearing
checked.
• Do you sometimes feel
embarrassed when you
meet new people because
you struggle to
hear?
• Do you feel frustrated
when talking to members
of your family because
you have difficulty
hearing them?
• Do you have difficulty
hearing or understanding
co-workers, clients
or customers?
• Do you have trouble
hearing in the movies or
in the theater?
• Does a hearing problem
cause you to argue with
family members?
• Do you have trouble
hearing the TV or radio
at levels that are loud
enough for others?
Hearing Handicap Inventory
for Adults [HHIA]:
Psychometric adequacy
and audiometric correlates.
What should people do if
they have trouble hearing?
Hearing problems can be
serious. The most important
thing people can do if
they think they have a hearing
problem is seek advice
from a health care provider.
If someone suspect they
or a loved one is experiencing
a hearing loss, they
should not hesitate to get a
hearing test.
Hollingworth Candies
makes life a little sweeter
In 1982 — with some
chocolate, pecans, butter
and a special family recipe
— Margaret Carlson began
making toffee 1 pound
at a time on her kitchen
stove in Homer Township.
She started selling her
candy at small craft shows,
and soon needed to start
taking orders for friends
and family as word spread
about the quality and
freshness of her product.
Her husband, Chester, retired
and began making the
toffee with her.
Before long, Margaret’s
signature toffee was
in high demand. In 1993,
her daughter Wendy joined
them and continues the tradition
now, bringing Hollingworth
Candies home
to happy customers.
Hollingworth Candies
has expanded to a larger
facility in Lockport to
make the handcrafted toffee
and candies, and it also
holds their storefront.
Though toffee remains
Hollingworth’s most popular
seller, the company
also makes cashew brittle,
Chesters, gourmet caramel
apples, sea salt toffee, sea
salt caramels, chocolatedipped
strawberries and
much more.
Margaret Carlson has
added her own line of
molded chocolates, called
Maggie’s Creations. Each
one is hand-painted with
colored chocolate and
molded into delicious, artful,
chocolate creations.
Hollingworth Candies
has many ideas for corporate
gifts, as well.
Customers can shop online
24 hours a day, seven
days a week, or stop in the
Lockport store. The Holiday
Hours are 9 a.m.-7
p.m. Monday-Friday; 9
a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and
11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
The hours are 9 a.m.-2
Dispelling the myth of the
spring selling season
Everyone has probably heard it before,
“Spring is the best time to sell a home.”
It is a common misconception and, as a
result, we see fewer homes being listed in
the winter and then a flood of inventory in
the spring.
If one looks at this from a supply and
demand standpoint, this actually creates a
“buyer’s market” in the spring, when inventory
goes up, and a “seller’s market”
in the winter, when supply goes down.
The great news is that there always are
people who need to buy a home — no
matter what time of year it is. In fact, last
year more than 70 homes went under contract
in Homer Glen between November
and February. The Dan Kenney Group
at Keller Williams Preferred Realty has
117 homes actively listed in Homer Glen
(down 26 percent from this same time last
year). Chances are most of these homes
will be under contract before Valentine’s
Day.
The other advantage of listing now is
that in the spring buyers have so many options
from which to choose that they tend
to take their time looking for a home. This
means a home will probably sit on the
market a little longer than normal.
In the winter, when inventory is low,
buyers know that they need to move
quickly to avoid losing out.
Outside of that, anyone who puts on
their hat, gloves, boots and winter coat
and trudges out into the snow to look at
houses is not just kicking tires. They need
to buy a home.
Sellers still have time to take advantage
of this great market and beat the spring
rush. They can give the Dan Kenney
Group a call for private consultation.
The group wishes everyone a wonderful
holiday season.
Ramon’s attention to detail
means a customer’s
custom motorcycle bag will
be the finest a customer has
ever owned and will get
them noticed on the road.
Seat coverings can be altered
to fit the individual,
so no more struggling with
factory stock seats that can
be uncomfortable or even
dangerous to ride on. Ramon
can add fringe to any leather
motorcycle accessories, including
custom hand grip
fringe, floorboard fringe and
bag fringe. Heritage Softail
bags can sag over time, but
Ramon can keep those bags
looking new with his custom-made
leather supports.
If a customer has patches
but doesn’t trust themselves
to apply them, Ramon can
apply them for the customer
to their cut, leather or denim
jackets or their bike’s bags.
Ramon has been working
with leather since his father
started teaching him when
he was just 5 years old. Since
then, Ramon has been honing
his craft, so there is not
any job too big or too small
for him to handle with the
expertise and care needed
when making alterations or
prized possessions.
When customers work
with Ramon, they are going
the work they want done at
Providence Catholic High School to hold
placement exam for incoming students
Providence Catholic
High School welcomes
all current eighth-grade
students to the Incoming
Freshman Placement
Exam on Saturday, Dec. 2.
Providence Catholic
High School is a college
prep school and challenges
every student academically.
Whether the student
is in Advanced Placement,
honors, college prep or
needs a little assistance
in the classroom, there is
a place for every student.
Providence Catholic ACT
scores are the best of any
school in Will County.
Providence Catholic
students go on to excel at
top tier colleges and universities.
Students receive
personalized college counseling
to make the right
choice. Graduates receive
more scholarship dollars
than any other high school
in the area. It is quite clear
that there is an advantage
to attending Providence
Catholic, often dubbed
The Providence Advantage.
“Our demanding coeducational,
college preparatory
curriculum is evidenced
by the success of
our most recent graduates
who earned scholarships
valued at nearly $40 million,”
President Fr. Richard
McGrath said. “We
offer inclusive service programs;
in fact, our recent
graduates performed in
excess of 25,000 hours of
community service during
their high school careers.”
Not only do the Celtics
experience excellence in
the classroom, but PCHS
students also succeed in
the athletic and extracurricular
arenas. The Celtics
are home to 30 state
championships, 67 state
trophies and hundreds of
regional titles, sectional titles
and conference championships.
The outcomes
of the graduates from the
Class of 2017 demonstrate
the elite and premier education
at Providence Catholic.
“Providing financial
assistance to Providence
Catholic families is a top
priority for the school,”
said Ed Barrett, director of
need-based aid. “Twentyfive
percent of our families
receive some type of financial
assistance.
“In fact, this year the
school has invested, and
$1.6 million was awarded
to our families in needbased
scholarships and
grants, work programs,
discounts, and subsidized
lunches.”
Providence Catholic invites
potential students to
continue the tradition and
become a part of excellence.
Pre-registration is
required for all incoming
freshmen. For information
Whitmore Ace Hardware — five generations and six locations strong
As a business rich in
tradition and family,
Whitmore Ace Hardware
begins our fifth generation
of leadership. And
that family realizes what
has made it a strong brickand-mortar
business is its
love of community and
service for more than 120
years.
The business was established
by William Henry
Whitmore in 1896 at the
Wilmington location.
Mike and Mary (Whitmore)
Cripe ran the business,
along with Mary’s
father and grandfather,
for many years. They
expanded the business
to three more locations:
Braidwood, Manteno and
Manhattan.
Their sons, Michael and
David Cripe, have continued
to follow their family’s
footsteps and have
opened stores in Mokena
and New Lenox. Whitmore
Ace now has six locations
serving Illinois.
The business attributes
its success to a strong set
of core values: to be noticeably
different, dedicated
to family and community,
amazing to every
customer, working with
passion and living a life
with gratitude. Its owners
promise to bring these
values to every community
they serve and to the
team members who work
with them.
In the past five years,
Whitmore Ace has
brought new and exciting
brands to its stores. Each
location may be slightly
different, but the core inventory
is “hardware.”
Some brands the family
has introduced are Yeti,
Big Green Egg, Traeger,
Stihl, Carhartt, Red Wing,
Hallmark, Weber and
Toro, plus their own Water
Street Boutique. Every
store provides key cutting,
glass cutting and screen
repair; custom paint colors;
propane; knife and
blade sharpening; and, of
course, a great selection
of nuts, bolts and screws
— the basics of hardware.
Whitmore Ace is proud
of its seasonal departments
in lawn and garden
and Christmas. Its owners
hope to help their customers
with one-stop shopping.
It is their goal to
provide a fair value for
quality products and superior
service at each of
the stores.
Historically, hardware
stores have often been
designated as general
stores, filling the needs
of the community. Putting
a twist on a modern
day general store fit into
Whitmore’s plans. Adding
trends in fashion,
gifts and home, a modern
day general store called
Water Street was born.
Water Street is the address
of Whitmore’s first
hardware store, opened in
1896 in Wilmington. The
store has wonderful
brands, such as Alex
& Ani, Brighton, Nora
Fleming, Kendra Scott,
and Love Your Melon.
Whitmore’s hope is to
provide for you an inspiring
and delightful selection
of items for any home
and lifestyle. The owners
wish to make a customer’s
trip to the hardware store
a family event.
The first Water Street
was opened in 2016 at the
Mokena location. Whitmore
has since opened
one in Wilmington, and
have Water Street gift
selections in Manteno,
Manhattan and Braidwood.
New Lenox is soon
to come.
Whitmore has added a
sixth location and is excited
to serve the community
of New Lenox. It has been
open only a few weeks
and already has had such
a great welcome. January
of 2018 is to bring some
great changes to the New
Lenox store, so customers
may have to pardon
the dust, while Whitmore
remodels. The community
will be happy with the improvements
and exciting
new brands, along with
the Water Street gift selections.
Customers are invited to
participate in the Ace Rewards
membership in the
store closest. The promise
of Whitmore is to amaze
with its customer service
and make the stores
friendly and reliable.
Cris Realty offers expertise,
service for homeowners
looking to sell
Has everyone heard of
the dreaded FSBO?
For Sale by Owner can
be a scary endeavor for a
buyer — especially a first
time homebuyer.
According to the National
Association of Realtors,
for sale by owners
generally sell for 20 percent
less than their neighboring
counterparts.
As a homeowner thinking
of selling, Karen Nelson,
managing broker for
Cris Realty would recommend
hiring a local professional
always. Agents who
know their market will
know of upcoming properties
that may soon be competition.
Why not get the expertise
up front on how to
stage, market and price a
home? The goal for everyone
is the same.
Nelson has had many
buyers who will not look
at a FSBO because they
want professional representation.
As a seller, one
should do the same.
An agent will handle all
the marketing, paperwork,
disclosures and everything
else needed to put the seller
in the driver’s seat.
No matter the time of
year, sellers should put
trust in a local agent and
make the return higher.
‘Tis the season so call soon
for more information on
buying and selling during
this holiday season.
Potterco Real Estate: the newest locally
owned and operated brokerage in Lockport
What makes Potterco different?
“Everything,” broker/owner Cari Potter
said. “Of course, we have financial goals
as a sustainable business, but our mission
to connect with people and businesses in
the community weighs just as heavily in
our business model. I currently serve as a
[board director] for the Lockport Chamber
of Commerce. It’s been a gratifying
experience to work with other businesses
in the community who have a vested interest
in sustainable responsible growth in
Lockport. I wish more businesses recognized
the importance of becoming actively
involved in their local chamber.”
A large percentage of Potterco’s business
comes from repeat clients and referrals.
“I can’t tell you how much we appreciate
that type of business,” Potter said.
“Because of our repeat business, I don’t
have to spend time chasing new business
or pay for expensive prospecting. I don’t
sling deals. I build relationships, one by
one, and help those who need me when it
comes to buying and selling homes.”
Potterco also markets commercial properties
locally and provides property management
services. Potterco offers buyers
and sellers the same experience and level
of marketing offered by larger brokerages
and are members of the local, state
and national realtor associations, and thus
they have the same tools and resources as
franchises.
Potter started her now 10-year real estate
career right as the market was crashing
in 2007. What was supposed to be a
two-year transition of selling real estate
on the side (while also working full time
in the legal field) turned into seven long
years of working two jobs.
“I was with a major real estate franchise
for nine of those years, and after four
years of being a full time agent I decided
to build a brand that reflects my personal
values and everything that’s important to
me,” Potter said. “Family. Home. Community.
Sustainability. Better business.
Organic growth.”
Potter’s husband, Ed Peterson, joined
Potterco earlier this year, and the couple
has been learning to work as a team —
both at work and home.
Cari added, “We’re also working on our
own home and garden to maximize the
enjoyment of our home and our health.
I want to help people understand the importance
of adapting to a simpler lifestyle.
That’s not what drew us to Lockport, but
it’s what’s keeping us here.”
Submitted by Potterco. For more information,
call (815) 531-5566 or potterco@cpotterco.
com.
We would like to thank the
Lockport community
for your generous support in 2017.
We look forward to growing with and continuing to serve you.
Have a happy, healthy and prosperous 2018!
Tinley’s Pop’s Italian Beef & Sausage ready for the holidays
At Pop’s Italian Beef &
Sausage in Tinley Park,
homemade food at a great
value is what is on the
menu this holiday season.
The Pop’s Italian Beef &
Sausage Tinley Park location
has been making the
holidays special with its
delicious catering offerings
since 2009. Focusing
on high quality food with
affordable prices, Pop’s be
a part of everyone’s celebrations
this season.
“Christmas Eve is our
busiest day of the year,”
owner Burke Matyas said.
“People especially love
our beef and chicken for
their holiday gatherings.
“Every 15 minutes, we
are cooking 120 pieces of
chicken, so call early for a
prime spot. Some people
who have made our food
a tradition are calling a
month in advance every
year.”
Pop’s famous chicken is
pressure-cooked to make
it more moist and delicious,
which is why it is so
popular among customers.
Also, all the beef is cooked
and sliced daily and has
been since the first Pop’s
opened its doors in Palos
Heights in 1980.
Pop’s offers a variety of
catering packages which
include Italian beef, Italian
sausage, chicken, baked
mostaccioli, and sausage
and meatball trays.
Delicious catering services
are not all Pop’s is
known for. Pop’s in Tinley
Park also is part of the
hot lunch program for area
schools, and offers a fundraising
program that gives
back 20 percent of its profits
that day to the participating
nonprofit group.
Pop’s daily specials
and text messaging promotions
also make Pop’s
in Tinley Park a popular
lunch destination. At 9:30
a.m. every Monday, a text
message promotion is sent
to 26,000 phone numbers
of people who opted into
the program by texting the
word POPS (in all capital
letters) to 95577. The specials
are good for Monday
and Tuesday, and generally
rotate between the
same popular offerings.
The menu items include;
cheeseburger ($2.25), beef
sandwich ($3.50), Italian
sausage sandwich ($2.99),
gyros sandwich ($3.50),
breaded steak sandwich
($2.99), and all-beef hot
dog ($2.25).
There are always two
different specials every
day of the week. Also,
every order comes with a
brightly colored coupon
for a customer’s next visit.
For the most part, all
Pop’s stores offer the
same menu, but at Tinley
Park people can also order
a homemade sloppy
Joe, or choose from two
homemade soups; cream
of chicken with rice, and
vegetable beef barley.
They are very popular with
regulars and keep people
coming back again and
again.
At Pop’s, customers are
treated as more than a just
a customer; they are treated
as a friend.
“We have so many regulars
here, and I think it’s
because we give out great
customer service,” Matyas
said. “We like to talk
and laugh with our regulars
when they walk in the
door, really make them
feel welcome.
“We have some regulars
that come here so often,
as soon as they walk in
the door I’m already calling
their order out to the
kitchen before the customer
even makes it up to the
counter.”
And it’s not just the customers
that are loyal.
“Most of our employees
have been here a long
time, so we can really
keep up the consistency,”
Matyas said. “I have one
employee that’s been with
the Pop’s franchise for 20
years, and another one
that’s been with me since
Day 1 in Tinley Park.”
just the way they remember
it.
Jack Gibbons Gardens —
or Gibbons, as the regulars
call it — opened in 1922 as
a speakeasy. Although times
have changed drastically
since then, the restaurant itself
has not. From the red
leather booths to the woodpaneled
walls, Jack Gibbons
is truly timeless.
In a time when chain restaurants
are on every corner,
Gibbons has become even
more special and unique.
From the second a diner sits
and is instantly delivered delicious
warm bread, three-bean
salad and coleslaw — before
even a glance at the menu —
it is easy to know one is about
to have one of the best meals
of his or her life. From surf
and turf to fried chicken, Gibbons
has something to satisfy
any craving.
Gibbons has been described
as a “generational
place” that sees everyone
from grandfathers and fathers
to their grandchildren dine
there.
A secret to that success is
that the restaurant’s staff does
not experience the type of
turnover seen in some chain
restaurants. Its employees
have worked there for years,
striving for a “Cheers” vibe
with which the bartender
knows the customers, what
they are having and the
friends they bring with them.
Chesdan’s maintains status as crowd-pleaser
Historic pizzeria
tantalizes taste buds with
assortment of dishes
At Chesdan’s, the goal is to
be innovative in adding things
to the menu, but not to the point
that people feel uncomfortable
trying new dishes.
That is the mindset of Dan
Garr, who owns the pizzeria and
grille in Homer Glen with his
brother, Jim.
The dining establishment
was started in Brighton Park by
brothers Chester and Dan Sr.,
who combined their names in
1946, and the business quickly
became popular for its pizza and
other cuisine.
Garr and his brother took over
running the restaurant in 1975
and moved it out to Homer Glen
in 2002, when they got the first
liquor license in a village that
The Original King Special pizza — a thin crust
and green pepper — is a longtime favorite at
was incorporated just the year
before.
Though the brand has been a
success ever since, Garr does not
rest on his laurels.
“There are some core
things we always have here,”
Garr said, noting the pizzas with
fresh ingredients and many of the
pasta dishes. “But people’s tastes
have changed over the years in
what they are looking for.”
The chicken margarita sandwich is made with
a grilled, tender breast of chicken topped with
fresh bruschetta, romaine lettuce, Parmesan
cheese and mozzarella, all on French bread that is
toasted.
tradition, getting a small, 10-
sausage. It’s fresh, never frozen.
We grind our own cheese, and
I’m very particular about the
freshness of cheese.”
The owner points out there is
a delicate balance to be found in
the dairy.
“We get the cheese direct from
Wisconsin, and if it is too fresh
it is very dry, and if too old it is
very oily,” he said. “If it’s not
right, I reject the whole lot.”
Where the restaurant has
branched out in recent years is in
adding menu items such as new
pasta dishes and sandwiches, like
the chicken margarita sandwich
— a grilled chicken breast on a
French bread bun that is toasted
and served with mozzarella and
Parmesan cheeses. Menu items
like these make for a good lunch
or quick bite, according to the
owner.
If in the mood for the pasta,
the Arabiatta di Manzo — which
also comes in a meta (or half-portion)
— gives the palate plenty
of flavor with its tender beef, red
pepper flakes, garlic, red onion,
mushrooms, black olive and fresh
basil tossed over penne noodles
and finished with sliced Parmesan
cheese.
“I think people like the family-owned
solid restaurant that
has friendly service,” Garr said
in summing up the success the
business has achieved over the
decades.
Chesdan’s also attracts customers
by coming up with more
recent daily specials. Between
wine nights, summer entertainment
on the Chesdan’s patio
and other promotions, there is
plenty to experience with each
new visit to the restaurant. There
also are treats all ages can enjoy,
like a hand-scooped, made-withwhole-milk,
creamy Oreo milkshake
in a 22-ounce glass mug.
Altogether, Chesdan’s is proud
of its past while still working
hard and tweaking things here
and there for an even better future.
“It is quite fulfilling,” Garr said
of working at the restaurant with
many family members and providing
a combination of excellence
in ambiance and cuisine. “I
love it.”
Other dishes not to miss ...
• Buffalo shrimp 10-piece —
Owner Dan Garr’s favorite
Chesdan’s appetizer on which
to snack, this dish consists of
breaded and butterflied shrimp
that are peeled and de-veined
in-house, covered in a Cuervo
buffalo sauce.
• Cinnamon pillows — A dessert
the whole family can share,
these “pillows” are fried dough
covered in cinnamon sugar and
dipped in caramel and chocolate
sauces that are served on
the side.
Chesdan’s also caters holiday
parties.
Before the winter wind
consider a move to maintenance-free
living.
For retirees, Hanover
Place offers a perfect way
to say goodbye to coldweather
woes. Living is
truly carefree with no need
for snow shovels or ice
scrapers, and no worries
about frozen pipes.
At Hanover Place, residents
enjoy a carefree,
maintenance-free lifestyle
away from the hassles of
home ownership but with
all the benefits of a private
residence in a choice
of spacious one- and twobedroom
options.
All floor plans feature
full-size kitchens, open
living spaces and full
bathrooms. Even better, a
maintenance team is just
a call away to assist with
projects large and small.
Four-legged friends feel at
home, too, because it is a
pet-friendly community.
Hanover Place also represents
a value for retirees
because the independent
living rental community
requires no down payment,
just flexible monthto-month
rent with most
utilities included.
Residents enjoy many
extra resort-style services
and amenities that make
life easier and more enjoyable
in this community.
There is no need to get in
a car to go to a movie theater,
or hair salon. All are just
steps away at Hanover
Place, or transportation is
provided.
Scheduled activities
—from fitness classes to
community make life fun.
Planned social events offer
opportunities to meet new
friends. Should residents
have health care needs, an
in-home health services
also are available.
Life at Hanover Place,
in a desirable, convenient
location, puts area attractions
coffeehouses and bakeries,
fine dining and nightlife,
sports bars and lounges all
are part of the neighborhood.
The community is conveniently
located near Interstate
across the country has a new
home in Mokena, offering the
finest, most delicious blends of
flavors and health supplements
available.
Everyone knows they could be
making healthier choices in their
time or the energy during a busy
commitment of getting healthier.
So, why not let Smoothie
King do the work and help make
choosing a healthier lifestyle
easier?
Smoothie King offers a variety
loss, wellness and smoothies for
just taking a break and enjoying
the day. Customers can get all
their favorite flavors — such as
banana, mango, orange, papaya
and strawberry — or try something
more exotic, like kiwi,
mangosteen, passion fruit or organic
pumpkin.
Customers can even add
healthy veggies, like kale and
carrots, and energy-boosting
nuts, like almond and peanut
butter. And for extra protein, try
a vanilla flavored boost of whey,
or add a supplement from Sun-
Warrior, Gladiator or Lean1.
Smoothie King in Mokena is
locally owned and hires its staff
from people in the Lincoln-Way
area. They are committed to
bringing a new, healthy alternative
to the area and working to
make sure the people who serve
customers are people who live
in the same area, so they know
the hectic schedules and lives
people live and can provide the
best smoothie options for any
lifestyle.
Every smoothie is expertly
blended with real fruit and fruit
juice, nuts or veggies, plus the
high-quality proteins, vitamins,
minerals, antioxidants and more
to help people reach their goals,
so they will not find any highfructose
corn syrup or trans fat.
Plus, there are not any ingredients
prohibited by any regulatory
lists monitored by NSF, so the
Gym-Kinetics offers camps and clinics
The Gym-Kinetics gymnastic
school will be hosting many
different camps and clinics during
the Christmas holidays in its
newly expanded facility.
Gym-Kinetics is going through
a 7,000-square-foot expansion of
its existing 17,000-square-foot
gym. Owners Jim and Wendy
Fredrickson started the expansion
a couple of months ago to
give all of their students a more
comfortable experience. The
parking lot is completed, and
the gym space is to be ready
in a couple weeks. A three-day
gymnastic camp is scheduled
after Christmas for beginners to
advanced gymnasts from 10:30
a.m.-12:30 p.m. Dec. 27, 28 and
29.
Also offered will be Flip Flop
clinics at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on
Dec. 27 and 28, and the very
popular Ninja Zone mission for
girls and boys ages 4-9.
As Gym-Kinetics gets bigger,
its gymnasts are getting stronger.
Many of the top gymnasts in
the state train in Mokena, and
staff at the south side gym is excited
to test the new space with
many upgrades to its state-ofthe-art
facility.
Hundreds of state, regional
and national champions have
come out of Gym-Kinetics over
the years, as well as more than
30 full-ride college scholarships.
The business is hoping to see a
few more soon.
The owners said several college
coaches have been in the
gym the last few weeks, recruiting
Gym-Kinetics’ athletes.
They expect some offers to come
in soon.
Gym-Kinetics offers classes
for children just walking up
through high school age for both
girls and boys. The new addition
will have dedicated space for
the quickly growing Ninja Zone
program, along with reorganizing
the preschool space, and the
boys gymnastic area, which will
make all of the programs more
comfortable. Gym-Kinetics also
will be renting space to local
cheer teams.
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Most people know they
need to clean out their
dryer lint tray between
each cycle, but what lurks
behind the wall is just as
important for safety and
avoiding fire traps, as well
as fully efficient dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger, owner
of Dryer Vent Wizard,
opened his New Lenoxbased
business in 2009.
Lint is the villain —
lint that has been allowed
to build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent.
It is estimated by the
U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and
the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually. These fires
account for an average of
20 deaths, 370 injuries and
more than $88 million in
property damage.
“Failure to clean the
dryer vent” was the leading
factor cited in U.S. Fire
Administration reports.
“It is something very
few people know about or
think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company
specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration
and installation. “It is
the leading cause of dryer
fires.”
Lint accumulation also
can cause dryers to stop
working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent
clogged with lint can add
“Improper venting causes problems,
as well,” Enzenberger said.
“The dryer exhaust duct and connections
should be made of rigid
metal or semi-rigid metal and secured
with metal, heat-resistant
tape, rather than duct tape. I often
find plastic or foil accordion-type
material, which can easily trap lint
and is more susceptible to kinks
and crushing.”
Warning signs include the following.
• Clothes are taking more than one
cycle to dry, especially jeans and
towels
• No lint visible on lint screen
• Dryer repeatedly stops during a
cycle
• Clothes have moldy smell after
dry cycle
• Clothes are very hot after a dry
cycle
• The top of the dryer hot to the
touch while running
• There is excess lint left on clothing
“This has been a consumer education
process, but it’s hard to get
the word out,” Enzenberger said .
“Most don’t call until they have a
serious problem with their dryer.”
He suggests people treat clothes
dryers as a household item in need
of regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer performance
and promote safety by cleaning the
lint screen between each use, ensuring
the connection between the
dryer and wall is made of compliant
material and remains un-kinked,
and having the dryer exhaust duct
cleaned regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection and
cleaning at least annually.
Those who are taking some time
off for the holidays find it is the
perfect time to have an inspection
and cleaning of clothes dryers and
dryer vent systems.
Another important tip: Never let
your clothes dryer run when you
are out of the house or asleep.
Duet couple Phil &
Amy celebrate 25 years
Recording artists Phil & Amy are to be
featured entertainers at Christmas dine
and matinee performances scheduled for
Tuesday, Nov. 28, at White Fence Farm
and Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Starved Rock
Lodge.
Starved Rock Lodge also is to feature
its “Strolling Down Broadway” show
Aug. 6, 7 and 8, for those who were not
able to get reservations for their November
and December shows.
The popular husband-and-wife duo
have appeared throughout the Chicago
area over the years, and recently rereleased
their 25th anniversary edition
“Opening Night” Andrew Lloyd Webber
selection album via CDs, downloads and
streams. Looking back, the album’s success
was enhanced thanks to many appearances
with the Franz Benteler Royal
Strings Orchestra.
It is almost hard to believe Phil & Amy
just celebrated 25 years of marriage,
capped by an unexpected surprise party
feast at Drury Lane-Oakbrook, concocted
by their three children, family and friends.
This couple has been hosting travel
tours for almost 25 years as well — motorcoach
travel trips to destinations near
and far. With each trip, the “family” of
followers continues to grow.
Phil & Amy adopted the name of St.
Christopher Tours, invoking the blessing
of the patron saint of travelers.
Their motto is, “Like family, we visit
authentic America.” Instead of piling into
a family vehicle, customers board a deluxe
motorcoach for a one- or multi-day
excursion to a fabulous destination.
Phil & Amy trips are so well-planned
for comfort and enjoyment that it is like
being a child again, when mom and dad
took care of all the details carefree — just
went along for the fun.
Interesting parties can call now to inquire
about trips to Yellowstone in June
2018; Mackinac Island in June 2018;
Frankenmuth, Michigan, in Oct. 2018; or
Cape Cod in June 2019; to name a few.
People also can get a more detailed
view of upcoming performances and
shows, theatre (“Hamilton” has been one
of their motorcoach group’s hottest tickets)
and single-/multi-day tours.
Christmas
in the
featuring
Commons
Santa Claus is coming to
New Lenox for Christmas
in the Commons
Mayor Tim Baldermann and the Village
of New Lenox are excited to announce the
return of Christmas in the Commons for
the 2017 holiday season.
The spectacular display of lights highlighted
by the largest illuminated Santa
Claus in the United States will return to
the New Lenox Village Commons for its
second year, accompanied by a full calendar
of holiday activities.
The holiday light display is to begin
lighting up the Village Commons Dec.
3, with dazzling drapes of lights and
life-sized displays that will transform
the Commons into a winter wonderland.
Santa Claus is to stand nearly 40 feet tall,
with 18,500 LED lights, and his special
mailbox to the North Pole will sit at his
feet. Visitors will have the opportunity to
mail letters to Santa, and all letters mailed
by Dec. 17 will receive a response from
St. Nick.
Also returning to the Commons will be
a synthetic ice skating rink, presented in
part by the New Lenox Community Park
District. Standard skates can be used on
the rink, and guests are encouraged to
bring their own skates, though a limited
supply will be available to rent during select
hours.
New to Christmas in the Commons
this year is a holiday market, taking place
weekends from Dec. 3 through Dec. 23.
Guests will find a new variety of vendors
each weekend, offering homemade and
artisanal wares for sale. People can stop
by to find unique gifts for family and
friends while supporting small businesses
in a beautiful holiday atmosphere.
All the fun begins Dec. 3 with the
Christmas in the Commons Kick-off
Celebration from 2-6 p.m. in the Village
Commons. The kick-off will include a
visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, an appearance
by Santa’s reindeer, holiday performances
and more. The day will culminate
with the official throwing of the
switch to light up the Commons with the
holiday lights.
Additional details on Christmas in the
Commons can be found at www.new
lenox.net/events or by calling the Village
of New Lenox at (815) 462-6400.
All events are free to attend, and no
