What is SEPAC? 

A committee comprised of Lamar CISD personnel and parents 

working in a collaborative effort to ensure opportunities for a 

successful education experience for all students, especially those 

with disabilities.

The committee serves as a district wide resource for parents or 

guardians who work in partnership to help determine appropriate

Objectives of SEPAC:

educational programs and other appropriate methods, Serve as a 

conduit for information and resources for the Lamar CISD community 

and Foster public awareness and promote understanding of disability 

issues and special education through ongoing communication.

A LCISD Board Workshop is to be held on December 19, 2017 starting

BRISCOE BAND EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION 

The Briscoe Junior High Honor Band is one of the select musicals groups 

chosen for the Foundation for Music Education’s Mark of Excellence 

program. 

The Honor Band was chosen as a Commended Winner. 

The Mark of Excellence project seeks to recognize and award outstanding 

achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, 

choirs and orchestras. The project gathers entries from throughout the 

United States and provides valuable feedback for all entrants. A unique 

competitive environment is created which allows ensembles to compare 

their performance quality to other outstanding groups from across 

the country. The top 25 percent of entrants are recognized as National 

Winners, with the second 25 percent named as Commended Winners.

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES SCREENING 

DEADLINE FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS 

Beginning in November, Katy ISD students in grades 1-4 and 6-11 can be 

referred for screening for the 2017-2018 gifted and talented program. 

Parents must complete a Parent Checklist which can be obtained from the 

student’s school or from the Katy ISD website. 

The deadline for completing and returning the Parent Checklist is 

December 6, 2017. Checklists which are not returned by the deadline will 

not be screened for service for the 2017-2018 school year. The State of 

Texas requires that various types of measures be used to identify students 

for gifted programs which includes observations and standardized tests. 

The program for elementary students consists of a one-day pullout in the 

Challenge classroom with a teacher trained in gifted education. 

Transfer students who were screened in Fall 2017 must wait one full 

academic year before they can be rescreened.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 584 

Boy Scout Troop 584 was living the Boy Scout Oath when Hurricane 

Harvey struck the community of Katy Texas. “To help other people at 

all times” resulted in the Troop volunteering over 600 hours to assist in 

rescuing stranded residents, cleaning out flooded homes and assisting at 

local crisis centers. 

Every day we would receive requests from members of our Troop with 

a list of homes or businesses that needed help. There were a few troop 

families that were flooded and needed help but many others were friends 

of Troop families. In some cases, we randomly drove into neighborhoods 

and went door to door asking if anyone needed help. In other cases, we 

would be at a house doing clean up and just moved to the neighbor next 

door or across the street. There was so many houses that we didn’t know 

the owner, just went in to help. 

They started doing water rescues on the Tuesday, August 27 th and that 

moved right into house cleanups. They didn’t miss a day. Since the boys 

were out of school, they worked every day until school returned September 

11 th . The troop split up into different crews and went to as many houses as 

they could. It wasn’t uncommon for us to be in 3-5 houses per day. Since 

the boys went back to school, we have still been doing weekend cleanups.

All of the work was focused in Cinco Ranch, Kelliwood and Grand Lakes 

Subdivisions. The boys never went into any house and were concerned 

with the size or amount of work to be done. They just knew that they had 

to get started, work hard and get the job completed. Every project we 

did was big but after the first day or 2, it was like a well oiled machine. 

Almost every house required complete removal of all furniture, sheetrock, 

insulation, doors, moldings, cabinets, bathroom fixtures and flooring. 

The boys learned what needed to be done and took on varying roles on 

each crew. Some were doing sheetrock, some doing base boards, others 

removing doors, some doing the carrying to the curbs and lastly the ones 

on clean up duty. Every boy had a role and was focused on the tasks. Some 

houses were very small and some were enormous. But the damage and 

losses were just as impactful to every home owner or business owner, 

regardless of size. 

The boys learned so much. The first was “Be Prepared.” They learned of 

how to prepare for a crisis and how to handle it. They learned how to 

coordinate priorities for clean up. They learned how to cooperate and 

work as a team. And most of all, they learned how to give back to the 

community and neighbors with no expectations. I never heard one boy 

complain about the long hours, sore muscles or being tired. At the end 

of every day they went home, showered and woke up the next day ready 

to tackle more houses on the list. One of the biggest things they saw and 

experienced was “humanity and compassion.” Being part of a community 

where so many people were helping, where strangers would bring them 

water and sandwiches, where people gave them tools and supplies. It 

opened their hearts for the people that were impacted.

It was one of the proudest times I have had in the Troop. Giving their time 

and effort with no expectation for anything in return made every parent 

so proud. To see the boys act like young adults was amazing. They worked 

hard and had fun. They might have just struggled with an overloaded 

wheelbarrow but they came back into the house with a smile and ready 

for more. They bonded with each other and build deeper friendships as 

they worked. Seeing them tackle hard projects and use the skills they have 

learned over their years in Boy Scouts was great to observe.

1 ST ANNUAL REIGN OVER CANCER WALK 

POSTPONED UNTIL FEBRUARY 25, 2018 

Due to the massive flooding the Katy community experienced as 

a result of Hurricane Harvey and the continued efforts to recover 

from the devastation it caused, the Reign Over Cancer (“ROC”) 

Walk has been postponed until Sunday, February 25, 2018. The 

walk will be held at Cane Island and will begin at 2 PM. Plan to 

stick around after the walk to enjoy complimentary food and 

beverages, music and family-friendly activities. 

The ROC Walk will recognize people in the community currently 

undergoing cancer treatment, highlight survivors and raise 

money to fund GEST Foundation grants. Register as an individual 

or a team online at www.GESTfoundation.org. Proceeds from 

the ROC Walk will provide grants for services including grocery 

delivery, home cleaning, home wound care, transportation or 

even counseling to help with the internal wounds that come with 

facing the news “you have cancer.” The walk will be fun for ALL 

ages, so grab your family and friends and join us at the beautiful 

Cane Island for an afternoon of fun while raising money for a very 

important cause.

Start your journey here, experience the night hope was born. 

Journey to Bethlehem is an outdoor, walk-through drama portraying the 

birth of Christ. In 2016, nearly 6,000 guests followed the winding trail, led 

by experienced guides, through a series of live action scenes, tracing the 

journey Mary and Joseph took centuries ago. Your travels will lead you 

through the village of Nazareth, into the camp of the Magi, past the Roman 

census and open-air markets of Judea, ultimately ending at the simple 

manger where Christmas began and hope was born. 

For the last fifteen years, Current - A Christian Church has been presenting 

this event to the Katy community. Each year the event grows. With live 

animals and more than 200 actors in costume, Journey to Bethlehem, is an 

annual tradition for many and serves to remind everyone who participates 

of the true meaning and impact of Christmas.
