contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when
walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet
tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the
first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working
after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.
CINCO MUD 8’s WATER SAVING GUIDELINES
Water your lawn between the hours of 4 AM and 8 AM to avoid evaporation
during daylight hours. The NFBWA Talking Sprinkler, Larry says
you only need to water your lawn twice a week, so please water every
4 days - no more. Cinco MUD 8 recommends watering for 8 minutes for
each zone. Replace any broken sprinkler heads. See www.cincomud8.
com for rebate info. Check out www.talkingsprinkler.com.
• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created “We’re
for Water” as a national campaign to educate consumers about
water-saving behaviors and WaterSense labeled products. The WaterSense
label makes it easy to identify products that use less water
and perform as well as or better than standard models.
• Whether by replacing an inefficient fixture with a WaterSense labeled
product or adopting water-efficient behaviors, we can all take action
to save water for future generations.
• Saving is as easy as check, twist, replace.
• Check toilets for silent leaks: put a few drops of food coloring in the
tank and wait 10 minutes to flush. If color appears in the bowl, the
flapper may need replacing.
• Twist on a WaterSense labeled bathroom faucet aerator to save
water and energy at the tap without noticing a difference in flow.
• Replace your showerhead with a WaterSense labeled model that
uses less water and energy, but still lets you shower with power.
• Join thousands of your neighbors in We’re for Water. Make simple
changes at home to save water and energy.
• Go to epa.gov/watersense to take the I’m for Water pledge.
• The pledge is also located in documents on www.cincomud8.com.
WILDLIFE - THEY’RE EVERYWHERE
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Love them or hate them, they’re everywhere! I’m talking about those
funny little critters called squirrels. As the fall baby season is coming
to an end, TWRC Wildlife Center has been inundated with babies.
What is normally a very busy time anyway, Hurricane Harvey only
added to the numbers. Hundreds of orphans were admitted and will
continue to be cared for until they are ready for release.
The Houston area is home to the gray squirrel, the fox squirrel and the
flying squirrel. About 90% of the squirrels in our area are gray squirrels.
Most people have never seen a flying squirrel because they are
nocturnal. They are very small and their tail acts as a rudder to help
guide it in flight. They don’t have wings but rather skin that forms
“flaps” that stretch between the “ankle” and “wrist.” If
you’ve ever seen a squirrel eating out of a “squirrel-proof”
bird feeder, then you know how intelligent they are. They
have also been known to pretend to bury food just to trick
other animals. A 2010 study showed that when a squirrel
is being watched, they will actually dig a hole, pat it with
their front teeth and scrape dirt over it to make it look like
they are burying a treasure when, in fact, they are hiding
their stash in a pocket near their armpit.
Here are some things you probably don’t know about
squirrels:
• A squirrel’s front teeth never stop growing. In the wild,
squirrels are constantly gnawing which keeps them
short.
• When you see squirrels running and zig-zagging in your
yard, they are doing this to avoid capture by a predator.
• Baby squirrels are only about an inch long when they’re
born.
• There are 285 species of squirrels and they can be found
in every continent except Antarctica and Australia.
• Squirrels have four toes on the front feet and five on the
back feet.
• Squirrels will twitch their tails to alert other squirrels
to possible danger.
• Squirrels have more than one nest. If one gets destroyed
or infested with insects, they always have a back-up.
TWRC Wildlife Center is a 38-year-old non-profit in Houston
that rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife with
the goal of releasing healthy animals back to the wild. If
you love wildlife and want to help, go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org
or you can call 713-468-8972.
KINDNESS MATTERS
From: http://www.glgc.com/kindness/why.html
Why Be Kind? Kindness leads to many of the virtues to which we value and desire
and can lead us wherever we want to go: to a happier life, to being more Christlike,
to enlightenment, to making a difference in this world, to raising loving and
kind children. The reasons for being kind are innumerable. Here are just a few:
• Being kind feels good. Doing something for someone else really does make us
feel good. Just as running releases endorphins, so does kindness. Make someone
smile and you’ll feel better for having done so.
• God smiles on kindness. Whether we are Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Buddhist,
kindness is an important part of the exhortations of all these religions. Both Buddha
and Christ were kind and encouraged their followers to be likewise.
• Kindness broadens our perspective. In order to be kind, we have to pay attention
to what is happening around us. As we notice more things and help others, we
get a glimpse of other ways of looking at things. A broader perspective helps us
to keep things in context.
• Kindness softens our heart. When we look for kind deeds, beauty and the opportunity
for kindness, we’ll find that we are more compassionate and more tolerant.
As we practice empathy, it opens our heart to others.
• Kindness brightens our world. When we are kind to people, it makes them happy.
The more people who experience kindness from us, the more happy people will
be in our lives. When those around us are happier, our world becomes a brighter,
lighter place to live.
• Kindness helps people feel respected and less alone. By recognizing someone’s
need for help and acting on it in a compassionate manner, it makes the recipient feel
valued. It also makes the giver feel better about themselves and more connected.
• Kindness makes people want to be around us. One of the most common responses
to kindness is gratitude. People appreciate what we’ve done for them.
Our kindness is very attractive, so they want to be around us and actually seek us
out. The Buddha lists this as one of the eleven impacts of loving kindness, but he
put it even more strongly, saying: “Loving kindness will make people love you.”
• Kindness bears wonderful fruit. Kindness begets kindness, openness, health and
reduces the effects of stress on our bodies and our hearts. In many ways, kindness
Engagement Story
is like Liquid Plumber for the soul: it opens us up, clears out the dross
and dwells lightly in our hearts.
• Kindness begets kindness. When you are kind to others, the impact of
your action doesn’t stop there. Many times the recipient of your kindness
and others who see or hear about your kindness are inspired to be kinder.
The ripples of kindness are truly endless.
• Your kids will learn from your example. When you are kind to friends and
acquaintances, your kids will be more likely to be kind as well. People
often treat their children with kindness, but can be short with a crazy
driver, strangers or others outside the family. This can cause “us and
them” thinking that devalues others as “less” than ourselves. Kindness
breeds tolerance and understanding.
HEALTHIER INGREDIENTS FOR A HEALTHIER HOLIDAY
You can make trouble-free recipe substitutions that will not sacrifice
the flavor, but will result in a healthier recipe outcome. Check out
these healthier holiday ingredient alternatives:
Instead of sour cream or cream cheese, try: Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt makes a wonderful protein-packed creamy substitution
in a variety of dishes and sweet treats. Dips, salad dressings,
creamy casseroles and cheesecake recipes are just a few recipes to
try. For best results choose the plain Greek yogurt variety.
Instead of bread crumbs, try: Coconut flour
Add crunch to your lean protein sources or veggies with coconut
flour, an ingredient that offers more protein, fiber and vitamins
than traditional breadcrumbs. Even better, you are offering holiday
guests a gluten-free food option.
Instead of added sugars, try: Fruit puree
Most baked goods are packed with added sugars. For a natural
sweetness and additional fiber try adding pureed fruits like dates
or banana to replace some or the entire sweetener in baked goods.
Instead of heavy cream, try: Tofu
Substitute heavy cream with silken tofu to add protein and reduce
fat content in your holiday recipes. Pureed tofu can be used in
puddings, milk bases or sauces. Your vegan friends will be thrilled
with this recipe substitution.
Instead of using oils in baked goods, try:
Unsweetened applesauce or bean puree
Replace at least half of the oil in your favorite baked goods with
unsweetened applesauce or bean puree. The substitution will help
maintain a moist baked good while not altering the taste.
Instead of potatoes, try: Cauliflower
Keep your carbohydrate side dishes in check this holiday season
by substituting cauliflower for potatoes in mashed potatoes. Cooked
cauliflower can be mashed up easily to create a consistency and flavor
similar to mashed potatoes.
GET INTO THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT!
Feeling a little bah-humbug? Want to be the Grinch and stay that way?
HANUKKAH
The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah
commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of
the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews
had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean
Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the
25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or
December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated
with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.
Community Newsletter | Dcember 2017
HISTORY OF HANUKKAH
The events that inspired the Hanukkah holiday took place during a
particularly turbulent phase of Jewish history. Around 200 B.C., Judea -
also known as the Land of Israel - came under the control of Antiochus
III, the Seleucid king of Syria, who allowed the Jews who lived there
to continue practicing their religion. His son, Antiochus IV Epiphanes,
proved less benevolent: Ancient sources recount that he outlawed the
Jewish religion and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods. In 168
B.C., his soldiers descended upon Jerusalem, massacring thousands
of people and desecrating the city’s holy Second Temple by erecting
an altar to Zeus and sacrificing pigs within its sacred walls.
DID YOU KNOW?
The story of Hanukkah does not appear in the Torah because the events
that inspired the holiday occurred after it was written. It is, however,
mentioned in the New Testament, in which Jesus attends a “Feast of
Dedication.”
Led by the Jewish priest Mattathias and his five sons, a large-scale
rebellion broke out against Antiochus and the Seleucid monarchy.
When Matthathias died in 166 B.C., his son Judah, known as Judah
Maccabee (“the Hammer”), took the helm; within two years the Jews
had successfully driven the Syrians out of Jerusalem, relying largely
on guerilla warfare tactics. Judah called on his followers to cleanse
the Second Temple, rebuild its altar and light its menorah - the gold
candelabrum whose seven branches represented knowledge and
creation and were meant to be kept burning every night.
THE HANUKKAH “MIRACLE”
According to the Talmud, one of Judaism’s most central texts, Judah
Maccabee and the other Jews who took part in the rededication of the
Second Temple witnessed what they believed to be a miracle. Even
though there was only enough untainted olive oil to keep the menorah’s
candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for
eight nights, leaving them time to find a fresh supply. This wondrous
event inspired the Jewish sages to proclaim a yearly eight-day festival.
(The first Book of the Maccabees tells another version of the story,
describing an eight-day celebration that followed the rededication
but making no reference to the miracle of the oil.)
OTHER INTERPRETATIONS OF THE HANUKKAH STORY
Some modern historians offer a radically different interpretation of
the Hanukkah tale. In their view, Jerusalem under Antiochus IV had
9

erupted into civil war between two camps of Jews: those who had assimilated
into the dominant culture that surrounded them, adopting Greek
and Syrian customs and those who were determined to impose Jewish
laws and traditions, even if by force. The traditionalists won out in the
end, with the Hasmonean dynasty - led by Judah Maccabee’s brother and
his descendants - wresting control of the Land of Israel from the Seleucids
and maintaining an independent Jewish kingdom for more than a century.
Jewish scholars have also suggested that the first Hanukkah may have
been a belated celebration of Sukkot, which the Jews had not had the
chance to observe during the Maccabean Revolt. One of the Jewish religion’s
most important holidays, Sukkot consists of seven days of feasting,
prayer and festivities.
HANUKKAH TRADITIONS
The Hanukkah celebration revolves around the kindling of a nine-branched
menorah, known in Hebrew as the hanukiah. On each of the holiday’s
eight nights, another candle is added to the menorah after sundown, the
ninth candle, called the shamash (“helper”), is used to light the others.
Jews typically recite blessings during this ritual and display the menorah
prominently in a window as a reminder to others of the miracle that inspired
the holiday.
In another allusion to the Hanukkah miracle, traditional Hanukkah foods
are fried in oil. Potato pancakes (known as latkes) and jam-filled donuts
(sufganiyot) are particularly popular in many Jewish households. Other
Hanukkah customs include playing with four-sided spinning tops called
dreidels and exchanging gifts. In recent decades, particularly in North
America, Hanukkah has exploded into a major commercial phenomenon,
largely because it falls near or overlaps with Christmas. From a religious
perspective, however, it remains a relatively minor holiday that places no
restrictions on working, attending school or other activities.
KWANZAA
Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California
State University, Long Beach, created Kwanzaa in 1966. After the Watts riots
in Los Angeles, Dr. Karenga searched for ways to bring African-Americans
together as a community. He founded US, a cultural organization and
started to research African “first fruit” (harvest) celebrations. Karenga
combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations, such as those
of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa.
KWANZAA HISTORY
The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza”
which means “first fruits” in Swahili. Each family celebrates Kwanzaa in its
own way, but celebrations often include songs and dances, African drums,
storytelling, poetry reading and a large traditional meal. On each of the
seven nights, the family gathers and a child lights one of the candles on the
Kinara (candleholder), then one of the seven principles is discussed. The
principles, called the Nguzo Saba (seven principles in Swahili) are values
of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing community
among African-Americans. Kwanzaa also has seven basic symbols which
represent values and concepts reflective of African culture. An African feast,
called a Karamu, is held on December 31st.
DID YOU KNOW?
The seven principles or Nguzo Saba are a set of ideals created by Dr.
Maulana Karenga. Each day of Kwanzaa emphasizes a different principle.
The candle-lighting ceremony each evening provides the opportunity to
gather and discuss the meaning of Kwanzaa. The first night, the black
candle in the center is lit (and the principle of umoja/unity is discussed).
One candle is lit each evening and the appropriate principle is discussed.
SEVEN PRINCIPLES
The seven principles or Nguzo Saba are a set of ideals created by Dr.
Maulana Karenga. Each day of Kwanzaa emphasizes a different principle.
• Unity: Umoja (oo–MO–jah) - To strive for and maintain unity in the family,
community, nation and race.
• Self-determination: Kujichagulia (koo–gee–cha–goo–LEE–yah) - To define
ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.
• Collective Work and Responsibility: Ujima (oo–GEE–mah) - To build and
maintain our community together and make our brother’s and sister’s
problems our problems and to solve them together.
• Cooperative Economics: Ujamaa (oo–JAH–mah) - To build and maintain
our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them
together.
• Purpose: Nia (nee–YAH) - To make our collective vocation the building
and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their
traditional greatness.
• Creativity: Kuumba (koo–OOM–bah) - To do always as much as we can,
in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and
beneficial than we inherited it.
• Faith: Imani (ee–MAH–nee) - To believe with all our heart in our people,
our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory
of our struggle.
SEVEN SYMBOLS
The seven principles, or Nguzo Saba are a set of ideals created by Dr. Maulana
Karenga. Each day of Kwanzaa emphasizes a different principle.
• Mazao, the crops (fruits, nuts, and vegetables) - Symbolizes work and the
basis of the holiday. It represents the historical foundation for Kwanzaa,
the gathering of the people that is patterned after African harvest festivals
in which joy, sharing, unity and thanksgiving are the fruits of collective
planning and work. Since the family is the basic social and economic center
of every civilization, the celebration bonded family members, reaffirming
their commitment and responsibility to each other. In Africa, the family may
have included several generations of two or more nuclear families, as well as
distant relatives. Ancient Africans didn’t care how large the family was, but
there was only one leader - the oldest male of the strongest group. For this
reason, an entire village may have been composed of one family. The family
was a limb of a tribe that shared common customs, cultural traditions and
political unity and were supposedly descended from common ancestors. The
tribe lived by traditions that provided continuity and identity. Tribal laws
often determined the value system, laws and customs encompassing birth,
adolescence, marriage, parenthood, maturity and death. Through personal
sacrifice and hard work, the farmers sowed seeds that brought forth new
plant life to feed the people and other animals of the earth. To demonstrate
their mazao, celebrants of Kwanzaa place nuts, fruit and vegetables, representing
work, on the mkeka.
• Mkeka: Place Mat - The mkeka, made from straw or cloth, comes directly
from Africa and expresses history, culture and tradition. It symbolizes the
historical and traditional foundation for us to stand on and build our lives
because today stands on our yesterdays, just as the other symbols stand
on the mkeka. In 1965, James Baldwin wrote: “For history is not merely
something to be read. And it does not refer merely or even principally, to
the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the facts
that we carry it within us, are consciously controlled by it in many ways and
history is literally present in all that we do. It could scarcely be otherwise,
since it is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities and
our aspirations.” During Kwanzaa, we study, recall and reflect on our history
and the role we are to play as a legacy to the future. Ancient societies made
mats from straw, the dried seams of grains, sowed and reaped collectively.
The weavers took the stalks and created household baskets and mats. Today,
we buy mkeka that are made from Kente cloth, African mud cloth and other
textiles from various areas of the African continent. The mishumaa saba, the
vibunzi, the mazao, the zawadi, the kikombe cha umoja and the kinara are
placed directly on the mkeka.
• Vibunzi: Ear of Corn - The stalk of corn represents fertility and symbolizes
that through the reproduction of children, the future hopes of the family are
brought to life. One ear is called vibunzi, and two or more ears are called
mihindi. Each ear symbolizes a child in the family and thus one ear is placed
on the mkeka for each child in the family. If there are no children in the home,
two ears are still set on the mkeka because each person is responsible for the
children of the community. During Kwanzaa, we take the love and nurturance
that was heaped on us as children and selflessly return it to all children,
especially the helpless, homeless, loveless ones in our community. Thus,
the Nigerian proverb “It takes a whole village to raise a child” is realized in
this symbol (vibunzi), since raising a child in Africa was a community affair,
involving the tribal village, as well as the family. Good habits of respect for
self and others, discipline, positive
thinking, expectations, compassion, empathy, charity and self-direction are
learned in childhood from parents, from peers and from experiences. Children
are essential to Kwanzaa, for they are the future, the seed bearers that will
carry cultural values and practices into the next generation. For this reason,
children were cared for communally and individually within a tribal village.
The biological family was ultimately responsible for raising its own children,
but every person in the village was responsible for the safety and welfare of
all the children.
• Mishumaa Saba: The Seven Candles - Candles are ceremonial objects with
two primary purposes: to re-create symbolically the sun’s power and to provide
light. The celebration of fire through candle burning is not limited to one particular
group or country; it occurs everywhere. Mishumaa saba are the seven
candles: three red, three green and one black. The back candle symbolizes
Umoja (unity), the basis of success and is lit on December 26th. The three
green candles, representing Nia, Ujima and Imani, are placed to the right of
the Umoja candle, while the three red candles, representing Kujichagulia,
Ujamaa and Kuumba, are placed to the left of it. During Kwanzaa, on candle,
representing one principle, is lit each day. Then the other candles are relit to
give off more light and vision. The number of candles burning also indicate
the principle that is being celebrated. The illuminating fire of the candles is a
basic element of the universe and every celebration and festival includes fire
in some form. Fire’s mystique, like the sun, is irresistible and can destroy or
create with its mesmerizing, frightening, mystifying power. Mishumaa saba’s
symbolic colors are from the red, black and green flag (bendara) created
by Marcus Garvey. The colors also represent African gods. Red is the color
of Shango, the Yoruba god of fire, thunder and lightning, who lives in the
clouds and sends down his thunderbolt whenever he is angry or offended.
It also represents the struggle for self-determination and freedom by people
of color. Black is the people, the earth, the source of life, representing hope,
creativity and faith and denoting messages and the opening and closing of
doors. Green represents the earth that sustains our lives and provides hope,
Community Newsletter | Dcember 2017
divination, employment and the fruits of the harvest.
• Kinara: The Candleholder - The kinara is the center of the Kwanzaa setting and
represents the original stalk from which we came: our ancestry. The kinara can
be shape - straight lines, semicircles or spirals - as long as the seven candles
are separate and distinct, like a candelabra. Kinaras are made from all kinds of
materials and many celebrants create their own from fallen branches, wood or
other natural materials. The kinara symbolizes the ancestors, who were once
earth bound; understand the problems of human life and are willing to protect
their progeny from danger, evil and mistakes. In African festivals the ancestors
are remembered and honored. The mishumaa saba are placed in the kinara.
• Kikombe Cha Umoja: The Unity Cup - The kikombe cha umoja is a special cup
that is used to perform the libation (tambiko) ritual during the Karamu feast
on the sixth day of Kwanzaa. In many African societies libation are poured for
the living dead whose souls stay with the earth they tilled. The Ibo of Nigeria
believe that to drink the last portion of a libation is to invite the wrath of the
spirits and the ancestors; consequently, the last part of the libation belongs
to the ancestors. During the Karamu feast, the kikombe cha umoja is passed
to family member and guests, who drink from it to promote unity. Then, the
eldest person present pours the libation (tambiko), usually water, juice or wine,
in the direction of the four winds - north, south, east and west - to honor the
ancestors. The eldest asks the gods and ancestors to share in the festivities
and, in return, to bless all the people who are not at the gathering. After asking
for this blessing, the elder pours the libation on the ground and the group says
“Amen.” Large Kwanzaa gatherings may operate just as communion services
in most churches, for which it is common for celebrants to have individual
cups and to drink the libation together as a sign of unity. Several families
may have a cup that is specifically for the ancestors and everyone else has
his or her own. The last few ounces of the libation are poured into the cup of
the host or hostess, who sips it and then hands it to the oldest person in the
group, who asks for the blessing.
• Zawadi: Gifts - When we celebrate Imani on the seventh day of Kwanzaa,
we give meaningful zawadi (gifts) to encourage growth, self-determination,
achievement and success. We exchange the gifts with members of our immediate
family, especially the children, to promote or reward accomplishments and
commitments kept, as well as with our guests. Handmade gifts are encouraged
to promote self-determination, purpose and creativity and to avoid the chaos
of shopping and conspicuous consumption during the December holiday season.
A family may spend the year making kinaras or may create cards, dolls or
mkekas to give to their guests. Accepting a gift implies a moral obligation to
fulfill the promise of the gift; it obliges the recipient to follow the training
of the host. The gift cements social relationships, allowing the receiver
to share the duties and the rights of a family member. Accepting a gift
makes the receiver part of the family and promotes Umoja.
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and
neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk,
be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper
and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may
not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but
it does show your respect for every homeowner and
our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for
rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s
means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the
safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and
keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF
YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely
in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512.
Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you
do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then
call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol
and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as
required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your
dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort
to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground
without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their
property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and
free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property
where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at
increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement
of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s
efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification,
should that animal become lost. Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the
animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats
because they are an important control measure for the public health
threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations
provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on
a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine
the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’
HOLIDAY PET SAFETY TIPS
The holiday season is upon us and many pet parents plan to include their
furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, it is
important to try to keep your pet’s eating and exercise habits as close to
their normal routine as possible. Also, please be sure to steer pets clear of
the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations.
BE CAREFUL WITH SEASONAL PLANTS AND DECORATIONS
• Oh, Christmas Tree: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn’t
tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the
tree water - which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset
- from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria
and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe.
• Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer
nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset
and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies can cause
kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants
made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.
• Tinsel-less Town: Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching “toy” that’s
easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble can lead to a
swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting,
dehydration and possible surgery. It’s best to brighten your boughs with
something other than tinsel.
• That Holiday Glow: Don’t leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may
burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock candles over. Be sure to
use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface. And if you
leave the room, put the candle out!
• Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out
of paws’ reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock
and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus,
while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet’s mouth
and digestive tract.
AVOID HOLIDAY FOOD DANGERS
• Skip the Sweets: By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and
anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you know the lengths to which
an enterprising pet will go to chomp on something yummy? Make sure
to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food,
and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans.
• Leave the Leftovers: Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as
bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can join the festivities
in other fun ways that won’t lead to costly medical bills.
• Careful with Cocktails: If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages,
be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets
cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may
even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.
• Selecting Special Treats: Looking to stuff your pet’s stockings? Stick with
chew toys that are basically indestructible, Kongs that can be stuffed with
healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safely digestible.
Long, stringy things are a feline’s dream, but the most risky toys for cats
involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in the intestines,
often necessitating surgery. Surprise kitty with a new ball that’s
too big to swallow, a stuffed catnip toy or the interactive cat dancer.
Plan a Pet-Safe Holiday Gathering
• House Rules: If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a
little extra attention and exercise while you’re busy tending to the party,
ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session.
• Put the Meds Away: Make sure all of your medications are locked behind
secure doors, and be sure to tell your guests to keep their meds zipped
up and packed away, too.
• A Room of Their Own: Give your pet his own quiet space to retreat
to—complete with fresh water and a place to snuggle. Shy pups and cats
might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carrying case
or in a separate room away from the hubbub.
• New Year’s Noise: As you count down to the new year, please keep in
mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a cat’s intestines,
if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers can terrify pets
and cause possible damage to sensitive ears. And remember that many
pets are also scared of fireworks, so be sure to secure them in a safe,
escape-proof area as midnight approaches.
GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their
permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure,
super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product.
Keep flowers picked for more bloom.
• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.
• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet
peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13;
Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.
• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson
cold weather damage. May acidify again.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum
and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds
die from lack of water than lack of food.
Boy Scout Troop 584 was living the Boy Scout
Oath when Hurricane Harvey struck the community
of Katy Texas. “To help other people at
all times” resulted in the Troop volunteering
over 600 hours to assist in rescuing stranded
residents, cleaning out flooded homes and
assisting at local crisis centers.
Every day we would receive requests from
members of our Troop with a list of homes or
businesses that needed help. There were a few
troop families that were flooded and needed
help but many others were friends of Troop
families. In some cases, we randomly drove
into neighborhoods and went door to door
asking if anyone needed help. In other cases,
we would be at a house doing clean up and
just moved to the neighbor next door or across
the street. There was so many houses that we
didn’t know the owner, just went in to help.
They started doing water rescues on the
Tuesday, August 27th and that moved right
into house cleanups. They didn’t miss a day.
Since the boys were out of school, they worked
every day until school returned September
11th. The troop split up into different crews
and went to as many houses as they could. It
wasn’t uncommon for us to be in 3-5 houses
per day. Since the boys went back to school,
we have still been doing weekend cleanups.
All of the work was focused in Cinco Ranch,
Kelliwood and Grand Lakes Subdivisions. The
boys never went into any house and were
concerned with the size or amount of work to
be done. They just knew that they had to get
started, work hard and get the job completed.
Every project we did was big but after the first
day or 2, it was like a well oiled machine. Almost
every house required complete removal of all
furniture, sheetrock, insulation, doors, moldings,
cabinets, bathroom fixtures and flooring.
The boys learned what needed to be done and
took on varying roles on each crew. Some were
doing sheetrock, some doing base boards, others
removing doors, some doing the carrying to
the curbs and lastly the ones on clean up duty.
Every boy had a role and was focused on the
tasks. Some houses were very small and some
were enormous. But the damage and losses
were just as impactful to every home owner or
business owner, regardless of size.
The boys learned so much. The first was “Be
Prepared.” They learned of how to prepare
for a crisis and how to handle it. They learned
how to coordinate priorities for clean up. They
learned how to cooperate and work as a team.
And most of all, they learned how to give back
to the community and neighbors with no expectations.
I never heard one boy complain
about the long hours, sore muscles or being
tired. At the end of every day they went home,
showered and woke up the next day ready
to tackle more houses on the list. One of the
biggest things they saw and experienced was
“humanity and compassion.” Being part of a
community where so many people were helping,
where strangers would bring them water
and sandwiches, where people gave them
tools and supplies. It opened their hearts for
the people that were impacted.
It was one of the proudest times I have had
in the Troop. Giving their time and effort with
no expectation for anything in return made
every parent so proud. To see the boys act like
young adults was amazing. They worked hard
and had fun. They might have just struggled
with an overloaded wheelbarrow but they
came back into the house with a smile and
ready for more. They bonded with each other
and build deeper friendships as they worked.
Seeing them tackle hard projects and use the
skills they have learned over their years in Boy
Scouts was great to observe.
CINCO RANCH HIGH SCHOOL FBLA CHAPTER
This past summer, sixteen members of the Cinco Ranch High School
FBLA chapter competed at the National Leadership Conference in
Anaheim, California. To qualify for this prestigious competition,
members had to participate and place in their respective competitions
at the district and state levels. These hardworking students
prepared and practiced for numerous competitions and presentations
including E-Business and Business Plan.
Cinco Ranch FBLA members had the opportunity to hear keynote
speakers, national officer candidate speeches and display their state
pride as the conference officially began. This conference not only
allowed them to enhance their business skills through numerous
workshops conducted by successful business leaders, but it also
expanded their networks through socializing with FBLA members
from all across the nation and other countries like Haiti, China and
Cuba. The students also enjoyed the city of Anaheim, exploring Disneyland
and riding roller coasters at Universal Studios when they
were not diligently studying for their competitions.
The Cinco Ranch FBLA Chapter was recognized as the largest chapter
in the Mountain Plains Region. Additionally, Cinco Ranch FBLA had
two teams, Management Information Systems (Sunanda Chilikuri,
Abby Rooney and Daisy Li) and Parliamentary Procedure (Shreya
Budhiraja, Merium Hashmi, Christina Ryoo and Elizabeth Xu) qualify
for the final rounds by scoring better than more than a hundred
teams.
Journey to Bethlehem
December 7-10, 2017
Start your journey here, experience the night hope was born. Journey to
Bethlehem is an outdoor, walk-through drama portraying the birth of Christ.
In 2016, nearly 6,000 guests followed the winding trail, led by experienced
guides, through a series of live action scenes, tracing the journey Mary and
Joseph took centuries ago. Your travels will lead you through the village of
Nazareth, into the camp of the Magi, past the Roman census and open-air
markets of Judea, ultimately ending at the simple manger where Christmas
began and hope was born. For the last fifteen years, Current - A Christian
Church has been presenting this event to the Katy community. Each year
the event grows. With live animals and more than 200 actors in costume,
Journey to Bethlehem, is an annual tradition for many and serves to remind
everyone who participates of the true meaning and impact of Christmas.
Christmaaaaas
Favorite Family Traditions: Annual Christmas Caroling Party
through the neighborhoods (what a fun way to dive back
into days of yore!), Dickens on the Strand in Galveston,
cooking for family and friends every year (especially
making decorated chocolate dipped marshmallows and
other chocolate goodies), baking cookies for Santa, and
toy donations for children. Oh, and lest we forget their
beloved visit with Santa at Bass Pro Shop! He always makes
sure to stock up on reindeer food while he’s there!
Funniest Christmas Memory: “One year we were headed to Dickens on the strand and we found out a
cold front was coming into town. I spent the entire evening in our hotel sewing furry capes so the family
would not freeze. It was 27 degrees that year. Because of all the fur, our hotel room looked like a wild
animal was turned loose in there and shed its winter coat.”
Shopping Logistics: This smart mama pays extra on the family bills all year so that at Christmas time, she’s
sitting on a nice credit to use towards presents, festivities and feasts. School book drives and other similar
events are opportune times for Romni to stash away a collection of unique gifts to tuck under their tree.
The Reason for the Season: Christmas time is so special for this family since it brings their families and
friends together, especially by enjoying a number of dinner parties throughout the season.
love the small town feel of Katy but just close enough
to the culture of the big city with all the Museums
30 min away and a beach only 1 hour away. My
husband and I both grew up in Houston/Katy and
the surrounding areas. I am an MCHS Alumni class of
‘92 and my husband is Cy-Fair HS class of ’95. We
love our community and people in it.”
Dear Neighbor,
As our community continues to pick up the pieces of
the devastation that has affected so many of us, I
wanted to share some information that may be helpful:
• Be sure you document all damage to your residence
and any vehicles affected.
• Take photos of everything you clear out and
immediately file a claim with your insurance company.
• If you're uninsured, federal aid is available to cover
victims' expenses. So far, FEMA has approved about
325,000 people for disaster assistance. People can
request assistance from the government by going to
disasterassistance.gov or calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
• Beware of fraud…FEMA is warning victims of
Harvey to be aware of fraudulent calls. Many people
reported receiving calls telling them that their policy
would be canceled if they did not make an additional
payment. Flood victims are also being targeted by
callers who say anyone who filed a claim last year
would not be eligible to this year. Take information
from trusted sources, such as insurance agents and
companies, local officials, an assigned insurance
adjuster or a FEMA representative.
• Be sure to do your research on third party companies
that you plan to use. Gather references and use
companies that have been referred with a good track
record. Check with the Better Business Bureau.
• A FHA 203(h) loan is now available to those who
qualify and are a victim in a Presidentially Designated
Major Disaster Area (PDMDA). You may be able to qualify
for a loan with 100% financing-no down payment!
As we all continue to get our lives back to some
normalcy, please know that I am here as a neighbor, a
friend, and someone who simply wants to help any way
I can. Together we can be not only Houston Strong, we
can be Grand Lakes Strong.
