CLUBHOUSE CONSTRUCTION
We already have funding in place and construction should begin shortly.
There will NOT be an increase in annual assessments as we have funds
in reserve for the pool and we’ll be able to pay back the loan in 10 years.
If you haven’t seen the renderings of both of these, go to www.falconranchhoa.com
and click on the Clubhouse construction link.
CONSERVE WATER-SAVE MONEY-YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
After this winter’s freeze I discovered a few problems with my sprinkler system.
I was able to have the North Fort Bend Water Authority send a sprinkler system
inspector to my house by appointment. They also sent me $15 and are willing
to assist with some of the cost required to make the needed repairs.
Outdoor irrigation accounts for up to 30% of residential water usage. The
North Fort Bend Water Authority (NFBWA) has determined that if residents
would reduce their water usage by 15% before 2040, construction of over $400
million worth of new surface water infrastructure can be avoided. NFBWA has
created a conservation program offering initiatives, which if met in 2017, will
result in lowered water fees in 2018. You can help us conserve water and save
money by helping your MUD District, Ft. Bend MUD 124, meet the following
performance measures:
1. Use the Wise Guy link to arrange for an irrigation expert to visit your house,
evaluate your sprinkler system and give you recommendations on repairs and/
or how to make your system more efficient. This can be done at www.vepollc.
com/wise_request_gis.aspx?wid=1027. There is no obligation to make the
repairs recommended by the irrigator and the inspection costs you nothing.
You will also receive $15 for having your system inspected. Please call 713-
488-8182 for additional help.
2. If you make changes in your irrigation system that are recommended by the
Wise Guy expert (see #1 above), you may be eligible for a partial rebate on your
portion of the cost. To learn more go to
www.talkingsprinkler.com/toolbox/rebate-form.pdf.
Thank you for your help. Jack Moller Director MUD 124
RECYCLE YARD WASTE
Residents of Falcon Ranch could benefit the community, as well as their own
lawns and pocketbooks, with one simple change in lawn maintenance.
If you or your lawn service currently bag grass clippings, simply leaving the
clippings to work down into the lawn will make a huge difference in the
amount of waste our community puts into the landfill each year. It will also
help conserve water, because the clippings will work to maintain moisture in
the soil. Both of these benefits will save money in the long-run. Moreover, it is
estimated that lawns that are naturally fertilized with grass clippings require
25% less fertilizer - resulting in even more savings to you!
Grass clippings and finely chopped leaves add vital nutrients and organic
matter to the lawn, thus improving the health of the lawn. It isn’t necessary
to use a mulching mower; just mow one inch when grass reaches four inches
tall. The clippings won’t be noticed and will break down within a week.
REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
You may have noticed the constables patrolling our neighborhoods, working
to keep our community safer for everyone. The appearance of constables has
raised a question of what to do if you witness suspicious activity. If you see
something happening that is an emergency, please call 911. If you see suspicious
activities that are not emergencies, call the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s
Office at 281-341-4665.
PET PEEVES
Do your duty as a pet owner! When you take your dog for a walk around the
community or to the park, please be courteous to the surrounding neighbors and
pick up behind your pet and keep unwanted dog waste from becoming a threat
and a nuisance to the safety and enjoyment for all members of the community.
STREETLIGHTS OUT?
Contact CenterPoint Energy for repair of streetlights that are not working at:
713-207-2222 by phone 713-207-9760 by fax
www.centerpointenergy.com/outage/ by internet
Remember to obtain the 6-digit pole number along with the closest physical
address to the street light that is not working. This will cut down on the
time for CenterPoint to locate and repair the pole.
Family Roster
Mom: Romni, Director of Logistics (Chateau Domingue)
Dad: Blake, Grind Division Manager (Oerlikon)
Son: Kaidryn, 9 YO: Black Belt TKD (Tiger Rock Martial
Arts of Katy), World Medalist/Titlist; Also enjoys
modeling, singing, and acting
Christmaaaaas
Favorite Family Traditions: Annual Christmas Caroling Party
through the neighborhoods (what a fun way to dive back
into days of yore!), Dickens on the Strand in Galveston,
cooking for family and friends every year (especially
making decorated chocolate dipped marshmallows and
other chocolate goodies), baking cookies for Santa, and
toy donations for children. Oh, and lest we forget their
beloved visit with Santa at Bass Pro Shop! He always makes
sure to stock up on reindeer food while he’s there!
Funniest Christmas Memory: “One year we were headed to Dickens on the strand and we found out a
cold front was coming into town. I spent the entire evening in our hotel sewing furry capes so the family
would not freeze. It was 27 degrees that year. Because of all the fur, our hotel room looked like a wild
animal was turned loose in there and shed its winter coat.”
Shopping Logistics: This smart mama pays extra on the family bills all year so that at Christmas time, she’s
sitting on a nice credit to use towards presents, festivities and feasts. School book drives and other similar
events are opportune times for Romni to stash away a collection of unique gifts to tuck under their tree.
The Reason for the Season: Christmas time is so special for this family since it brings their families and
friends together, especially by enjoying a number of dinner parties throughout the season.
Auld Lang Syne: “On New Year’s Eve, we usually throw a big party - everyone and the kids are welcome.
We eat and pop fireworks!”
Locale
Morton Ranch - On why they like living there: “We
love the small town feel of Katy but just close enough
to the culture of the big city with all the Museums
30 min away and a beach only 1 hour away. My
husband and I both grew up in Houston/Katy and
the surrounding areas. I am an MCHS Alumni class of
‘92 and my husband is Cy-Fair HS class of ’95. We
love our community and people in it.”
We Would Love to
Feature Your Family!
WILDLIFE - THEY’RE EVERYWHERE
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Love them or hate them, they’re everywhere! I’m talking about
those funny little critters called squirrels. As the fall baby season is
coming to an end, TWRC Wildlife Center has been inundated with
babies. What is normally a very busy time anyway, Hurricane Harvey
only added to the numbers. Hundreds of orphans were admitted
and will continue to be cared for until they are ready for release.
The Houston area is home to the gray squirrel, the fox squirrel and
the flying squirrel. About 90% of the squirrels in our area are gray
squirrels. Most people have never seen a flying squirrel because
they are nocturnal. They are very small and their tail acts as a rudder
to help guide it in flight. They don’t have wings but rather skin
that forms “flaps” that stretch between the “ankle” and “wrist.”
If you’ve ever seen a squirrel eating out of a “squirrel-proof” bird
feeder, then you know how intelligent they are. They have also
been known to pretend to bury food just to trick other animals. A
2010 study showed that when a squirrel is being watched, they will
actually dig a hole, pat it with their front teeth and scrape dirt over
it to make it look like they are burying a treasure when, in fact, they
are hiding their stash in a pocket near their armpit.
Here are some things you probably don’t know about squirrels:
• A squirrel’s front teeth never stop growing. In the wild,
squirrels are constantly gnawing which keeps them
short.
• When you see squirrels running and zig-zagging in your
yard, they are doing this to avoid capture by a predator.
• Baby squirrels are only about an inch long when they’re
born.
• There are 285 species of squirrels and they can be found
in every continent except Antarctica and Australia.
• Squirrels have four toes on the front feet and five on the
back feet.
• Squirrels will twitch their tails to alert other squirrels
to possible danger.
• Squirrels have more than one nest. If one gets destroyed
or infested with insects, they always have a back-up.
TWRC Wildlife Center is a 38-year-old non-profit in Houston that rehabilitates
injured and orphaned wildlife with the goal of releasing
healthy animals back to the wild. If you love wildlife and want to
help, go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or you can call 713-468-8972.
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and
neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk,
be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper
and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may
not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but
it does show your respect for every homeowner and
our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for
rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s
means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the
safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and
keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF
YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely
in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512.
Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you
do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then
call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol
and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as
required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your
dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort
to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground
without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their
property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and
free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property
where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at
increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement
of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s
efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification,
should that animal become lost. Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the
animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats
because they are an important control measure for the public health
threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations
provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on
a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine
the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’
HOLIDAY PET SAFETY TIPS
The holiday season is upon us and many pet parents plan to include their
furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, it is
important to try to keep your pet’s eating and exercise habits as close to
their normal routine as possible. Also, please be sure to steer pets clear of
the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations.
BE CAREFUL WITH SEASONAL PLANTS AND DECORATIONS
• Oh, Christmas Tree: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn’t
tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the
tree water - which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset
- from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria
and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe.
• Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer
nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset
and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies can cause
kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants
made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.
• Tinsel-less Town: Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching “toy” that’s
easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble can lead to a
swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting,
dehydration and possible surgery. It’s best to brighten your boughs with
something other than tinsel.
• That Holiday Glow: Don’t leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may
burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock candles over. Be sure to
use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface. And if you
leave the room, put the candle out!
• Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out
of paws’ reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock
and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus,
while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet’s mouth
and digestive tract.
AVOID HOLIDAY FOOD DANGERS
• Skip the Sweets: By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and
anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you know the lengths to which
an enterprising pet will go to chomp on something yummy? Make sure
to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food,
and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans.
• Leave the Leftovers: Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as
bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can join the festivities
in other fun ways that won’t lead to costly medical bills.
• Careful with Cocktails: If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages,
be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets
cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may
even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.
• Selecting Special Treats: Looking to stuff your pet’s stockings? Stick with
chew toys that are basically indestructible, Kongs that can be stuffed with
healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safely digestible.
Long, stringy things are a feline’s dream, but the most risky toys for cats
involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in the intestines,
often necessitating surgery. Surprise kitty with a new ball that’s
too big to swallow, a stuffed catnip toy or the interactive cat dancer.
Plan a Pet-Safe Holiday Gathering
• House Rules: If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a
little extra attention and exercise while you’re busy tending to the party,
ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session.
• Put the Meds Away: Make sure all of your medications are locked behind
secure doors, and be sure to tell your guests to keep their meds zipped
up and packed away, too.
• A Room of Their Own: Give your pet his own quiet space to retreat
to—complete with fresh water and a place to snuggle. Shy pups and cats
might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carrying case
or in a separate room away from the hubbub.
• New Year’s Noise: As you count down to the new year, please keep in
mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a cat’s intestines,
if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers can terrify pets
and cause possible damage to sensitive ears. And remember that many
pets are also scared of fireworks, so be sure to secure them in a safe,
escape-proof area as midnight approaches.
GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their
permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure,
super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product.
Keep flowers picked for more bloom.
• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.
• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet
peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13;
Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.
• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson
cold weather damage. May acidify again.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum
and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds
die from lack of water than lack of food.
Boy Scout Troop 584 was living the Boy Scout
Oath when Hurricane Harvey struck the community
of Katy Texas. “To help other people at
all times” resulted in the Troop volunteering
over 600 hours to assist in rescuing stranded
residents, cleaning out flooded homes and
assisting at local crisis centers.
Every day we would receive requests from
members of our Troop with a list of homes or
businesses that needed help. There were a few
troop families that were flooded and needed
help but many others were friends of Troop
families. In some cases, we randomly drove
into neighborhoods and went door to door
asking if anyone needed help. In other cases,
we would be at a house doing clean up and
just moved to the neighbor next door or across
the street. There was so many houses that we
didn’t know the owner, just went in to help.
They started doing water rescues on the
Tuesday, August 27th and that moved right
into house cleanups. They didn’t miss a day.
Since the boys were out of school, they worked
every day until school returned September
11th. The troop split up into different crews
and went to as many houses as they could. It
wasn’t uncommon for us to be in 3-5 houses
per day. Since the boys went back to school,
we have still been doing weekend cleanups.
All of the work was focused in Cinco Ranch,
Kelliwood and Grand Lakes Subdivisions. The
boys never went into any house and were
concerned with the size or amount of work to
be done. They just knew that they had to get
started, work hard and get the job completed.
Every project we did was big but after the first
day or 2, it was like a well oiled machine. Almost
every house required complete removal of all
furniture, sheetrock, insulation, doors, moldings,
cabinets, bathroom fixtures and flooring.
The boys learned what needed to be done and
took on varying roles on each crew. Some were
doing sheetrock, some doing base boards, others
removing doors, some doing the carrying to
the curbs and lastly the ones on clean up duty.
Every boy had a role and was focused on the
tasks. Some houses were very small and some
were enormous. But the damage and losses
were just as impactful to every home owner or
business owner, regardless of size.
The boys learned so much. The first was “Be
Prepared.” They learned of how to prepare
for a crisis and how to handle it. They learned
how to coordinate priorities for clean up. They
learned how to cooperate and work as a team.
And most of all, they learned how to give back
to the community and neighbors with no expectations.
I never heard one boy complain
about the long hours, sore muscles or being
tired. At the end of every day they went home,
showered and woke up the next day ready
to tackle more houses on the list. One of the
biggest things they saw and experienced was
“humanity and compassion.” Being part of a
community where so many people were helping,
where strangers would bring them water
and sandwiches, where people gave them
tools and supplies. It opened their hearts for
the people that were impacted.
It was one of the proudest times I have had
in the Troop. Giving their time and effort with
no expectation for anything in return made
every parent so proud. To see the boys act like
young adults was amazing. They worked hard
and had fun. They might have just struggled
with an overloaded wheelbarrow but they
came back into the house with a smile and
ready for more. They bonded with each other
and build deeper friendships as they worked.
Seeing them tackle hard projects and use the
skills they have learned over their years in Boy
Scouts was great to observe.
Start your journey here, experience the night hope was born. Journey to
Bethlehem is an outdoor, walk-through drama portraying the birth of Christ.
guides, through a series of live action scenes, tracing the journey Mary and
Joseph took centuries ago. Your travels will lead you through the village of
Nazareth, into the camp of the Magi, past the Roman census and open-air
markets of Judea, ultimately ending at the simple manger where Christmas
began and hope was born. For the last fifteen years, Current - A Christian
Church has been presenting this event to the Katy community. Each year
the event grows. With live animals and more than 200 actors in costume,
Journey to Bethlehem, is an annual tradition for many and serves to remind
everyone who participates of the true meaning and impact of Christmas.
KATY ISD SCREENING DEADLINE FOR
GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS
Beginning in November, Katy ISD students in grades 1-4 and 6-11 can be
referred for screening for the 2017-2018 gifted and talented program.
Parents must complete a Parent Checklist which can be obtained from
the student’s school or from the Katy ISD website.
The deadline for completing and returning the Parent Checklist is December
6, 2017. Checklists which are not returned by the deadline will
not be screened for service for the 2017-2018 school year. The State of
Texas requires that various types of measures be used to identify students
for gifted programs which includes observations and standardized
tests. The program for elementary students consists of a one-day pullout
in the Challenge classroom with a teacher trained in gifted education.
Transfer students who were screened in Fall 2017 must wait one full
academic year before they can be rescreened.
Parents may contact campus counselors, elementary Challenge teachers
or G/T facilitators if they have additional questions. They can visit the
Katy ISD GT and Advanced Academics webpage, www.katyisd.org/dept/
GT/Pages/GTServices.aspx for more information.
CINCO RANCH HIGH SCHOOL FBLA CHAPTER
This past summer, sixteen members of the Cinco Ranch High School
FBLA chapter competed at the National Leadership Conference in
Anaheim, California. To qualify for this prestigious competition,
members had to participate and place in their respective competitions
at the district and state levels. These hardworking students
prepared and practiced for numerous competitions and presentations
including E-Business and Business Plan.
Cinco Ranch FBLA members had the opportunity to hear keynote
speakers, national officer candidate speeches and display their state
pride as the conference officially began. This conference not only
allowed them to enhance their business skills through numerous
workshops conducted by successful business leaders, but it also
expanded their networks through socializing with FBLA members
from all across the nation and other countries like Haiti, China and
Cuba. The students also enjoyed the city of Anaheim, exploring Disneyland
and riding roller coasters at Universal Studios when they
were not diligently studying for their competitions.
The Cinco Ranch FBLA Chapter was recognized as the largest chapter
in the Mountain Plains Region. Additionally, Cinco Ranch FBLA had
two teams, Management Information Systems (Sunanda Chilikuri,
Abby Rooney and Daisy Li) and Parliamentary Procedure (Shreya
Budhiraja, Merium Hashmi, Christina Ryoo and Elizabeth Xu) qualify
for the final rounds by scoring better than more than a hundred
teams.
