| THE GOOD KITCHEN: WHY?
There are multiple reasons for the state of our broken food system: climate
change, warfare, politics to name a few. However, we believe there's another
huge reason: the overwhelming majority of our food system is owned by a
dangrously small handful of companies. Today, just six companies control
70% of the world’s seed market, four corporations control 75% of the global
grain market and 26% of global food markets is controlled by ten food
processing companies. The implication of that is a food system with little
incentive to change itself. As such, innovation within the food system has
been worryingly absent - particularly with regards to innovations that are
kind to the planet and our bodies.
Don't get us wrong, we are not anti-business. Quite the opposite. We believe
that truly sustainable businesses have the potential to help everyone,
everywhere have access to an adequate and sustainable diet. This is what
The Good Kitchen was set up to achieve. From smart farming to agroecology,
from food waste management systems to food education programmes, we
believe investing in high-risk, high-growth, innovative food social enterprises
has the potential for great social, environmental, and financial returns.
What is promising is that, in recent
years, the first shoots of innovation
have started to appear. The five
organisations who are part of The
Good Kitchen accelerator
programme are just the beginning.
Our investees are innovating in the
area of big data, food waste, and
alternative aquaculture feed to
name a few.
