Introductory
The mighty elephant is the largest land mammal in the
world. The African elephant can reach 13 feet at its shoulder
and can weight up to over 15,000 pounds! The original
ancestors of African and Asian elephants appeared in what
is modern day east Africa 16 million years ago. The
elephant’s biological family split into the genera of
mammuthus, loxodonta and elephas over a 2.4 million-year
period that began 7.6 million years ago. Today we have 3
species types, which are the African bush elephant
(Loxodonta Africana), the African forest elephant (Loxodonta
cyclotis), and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).
Elephants have quite a personality and are highly intelligent.
Their large ears, long trunks, and large frames make them a
unique mammal to look at. The average life span for an
elephant in the wild is around 50 to 60 years. Sometimes
they even live up to 70 years. Females can have offspring
until they are 50 years old and they are pregnant for 22
months before having a baby. This is the longest pregnancy
of any other animal in the world! At birth an elephant weighs
around 200 to 265 pounds. They have a consistent growth.
Females stop growing at around the ages of 25 to 30 years
and the males at around 35 to 45 years.
Elephants have an excellent sense of smell and hearing, but
have poor eyesight. Actually, upon birth the elephant is
practically blind and rely on their mother for guidance.
Elephants have two gaits – a walk and a faster gait that is
similar to running. They cannot jump, trot or gallop,
however they can swim and use their trunk as a snorkel. For

up to 16 hours a day an elephant can be found feeding on a
variety of plant life. They can consume anywhere from 300
to 750 pounds of food in a single day.
Although elephants have thick skin they can still get
sunburned. They use their trunks to covers themselves with
dirt, sand, or even mud to protect their skin. You might
wonder how do elephants sleep. They actually sleep while
standing for a few hours a day. Elephants are rarely seen
alone. A herd of elephants is called a parade. Elephants
naturally live together with a linear and established social
order. They require large areas in which to raise families,
breed, travel, forage and live. The climates of Asia and Africa
are ideal for these activities.
Elephants are one of the few mammals that can recognize
themselves in mirrors. You will be surprised on how much
you can learn about elephants and their lifestyles. Don’t
hesitate to research and read more about elephants in the
near future. They are fascinating animals! There is so much
more to learn that hasn't been added to this trivia gamebook!

More About Elephants
An elephant parade is led by the oldest and largest female
cow known as the matriarch. She is usually the one who
was the most closely related to the previous matriarch. The
rest of the herd is made up of the matriarch's other
daughters and their calves.
All African elephants, male and female, have tusks whereas
only some Asian males have tusks. About 50% of Asian
females have short tusks known as tushes - which have no
pulp inside.
Elephants are the only mammals, besides humans, to have
chins. Elephants have been known to learn up to 60
commands. African elephants can distinguish human
languages, genders and ages associated with dangers. It is
said that elephants can smell water from 12 miles away and
they can detect rain 150 miles away.
One of the world’s most expensive coffee brands is made by
the dung of Thai elephants. Elephants rarely get cancer
because they have 50 copies of genes that code for the tumor
suppressor protein p52, while humans only have two.
Elephants have three times more neurons then a human
does, yet no one knows why an elephant isn’t smarter. An
elephants skin can be up to 1 inch thick, yet it is so sensitive
that it can feel a fly land on it.

A Quote about Elephants
“Whenever elephants met men, elephants fared badly.
Syria's final elephants were exterminated by twenty-five
hundred years ago. Elephants were gone from much of
China literally before the year 1 and much of Africa by the
year 1000. Meanwhile, in India and southern Asia,
elephants became the mounts of kings; tanks against forts,
prisoners' executioners, and pincushions of arrows, driven
mad in battle; elephants became logging trucks and
bulldozers, and, as with other slaves, their forced labor
requires beatings and abuse. Since Roman times, humans
have reduced Africa's elephant population by perhaps 99
percent. African elephants are gone from 90 percent of the
lands they roamed as recently as 1800, when, despite earlier
losses, an estimated twenty-six million elephants still trod
the continent. Now they number perhaps four hundred
thousand. (The diminishment of Asian elephants over
historic times is far worse.) The planet's menagerie has
become like shards of broken glass; we're grinding the
shards smaller and smaller.”
Feel
