Introductory<br />

The United States of America has a lot of history for<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly being in existence for a little over 240 years, yet<br />

with the small introductory we hope you can find the<br />

time and interest to expand your knowledge of this<br />

great nati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

It started when Britain's American col<strong>on</strong>ies broke with<br />

the mother country in 1776. It was eventually<br />

recognized as the new nati<strong>on</strong> of the United States of<br />

America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783. During<br />

the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added<br />

to the original 13 as the nati<strong>on</strong> expanded across the<br />

North American c<strong>on</strong>tinent and acquired a number of<br />

overseas possessi<strong>on</strong>s. The two most traumatic<br />

experiences in the nati<strong>on</strong>'s history were the Civil War<br />

(1861-65), in which a northern Uni<strong>on</strong> of states defeated<br />

a secessi<strong>on</strong>ist C<strong>on</strong>federacy of 11 southern slave states,<br />

and the Great Depressi<strong>on</strong> of the 1930s, an ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

downturn during which about a quarter of the labor<br />

force lost its jobs. Buoyed by victories in World Wars I<br />

and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US<br />

remains <strong>on</strong>e of the world's most powerful nati<strong>on</strong>-state.<br />

Since the end of World War II, the ec<strong>on</strong>omy has<br />

achieved relatively steady growth, low unemployment<br />

and inflati<strong>on</strong>, and rapid advances in technology.<br />

America also has a diverse culture that shares a<br />

passi<strong>on</strong> of various ideologies that can be found strewn<br />

throughout the country. There is practically every<br />

nati<strong>on</strong>ality that has immigrated to the nati<strong>on</strong> in hopes
