TWIN LAKES
SHARE & PRAYER
We are excited about the new
things coming this fall! In this relationally
based group, friendships
develop and as we feel comfortable
we learn how to pray and support one another. In September, Share
& Prayer will begin a new format with an inductive study of the
gospel of Mark, the most compact of the New Testament books that
follows the life of Jesus. Rather than using a workbook or guide,
each person will have time on Wednesday evening to observe and
write what a chapter actually says around a given topic, attempting
to set aside preconceived notions and we will discuss our findings.
Most attendees are professionals working full time, with an age
range of 30 - 90! The group is growing and all Twin Lakes women
are welcome. Feel free to come and observe... new seekers are
encouraged to attend and try it out. For more information, contact
Patty Napp at Patricia.Napp@woodgroup.com or call or text Carol
Monahan, 713-305-9809. We will generally meet Wednesday evenings
at 6:45 PM at St. Anne’s, 13403 Sundowner Drive.
TLWA COFFEE MORNING
We would like to invite you to our
TLWA Coffee Mornings. We meet most
Thursdays, from 10 AM to Noon. We
socialize, drink coffee and enjoy a light
refreshment and laugh a lot. Come
meet your neighbors.
Our group is always open and is varying
in ages and backgrounds. No need
to “dress up”! Our dress is casual and determined by your plans
for the rest of the day... whether that is going to work, shopping
or the gym. Join us for the whole time or just pop in for a few minutes
to say “Hi” and find out what’s going on with friends in the
neighborhood.
On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Twin Lakes
Clubhouse. On the other Thursdays, our meetings are hosted in
members homes.
For more information or to find out where we are meeting, please
contact: Call or text Karen Stilwell at 757-615-3516.
OUT TO LUNCH
This Twin Lakes women’s gang
gets together on the third
Wednesday of the month just
for fun and friendship. We carpool
from the neighborhood
or meet at the location. Open
group, diversity welcome. Take us to your favorite restaurant! We
have fun exploring places we’ve never considered before! For info
TAX NEWS RELATED TO HARVEY DISASTER AND FLOODING
By Local Resident Tina Williams, CPA
For those suffering a casualty loss due to the recent flooding, there is
some good tax news. If you suffered a casualty loss in excess of any
insurance reimbursement you are able to take the deduction on your
2017 income tax return or amend your 2016 tax return and get an immediate
refund. The casualty loss does not have to be reduced by 10% of
adjusted gross income and can be deducted even if you do not itemize.
If the casualty loss generates a net operating loss on your return, the loss
related to the casualty can be carried back to your prior 3 year returns
and if still not fully utilized may be carried forward 20 years. The decision
to take the loss in 2017 or 2016 would be made after consultation
with your tax advisor.
If the casualty loss produces a net operating loss in 2017, this may also
be an opportunity to bring additional income into this tax year rather
than carrying the loss back to a prior year. For example, if your casualty
loss is more than your income for 2017, you could withdraw funds from
your retirement plan to offset the loss and not create any additional tax.
Penalty for early withdrawal from a retirement plan is waived.
In addition to the relief provided above, a taxpayer who has drawn funds
from a retirement plan for disaster relief may recontribute the funds
back within a 3 year period. If the funds are not recontributed to the
retirement plan then tax can be paid on the withdrawal over a 3 year
period. The limitation for this relief is $100,000. This is good news for
those needing additional funds while waiting for the sale of the flooded
property or insurance proceeds.
4 December 2017 | Community Newsletter

The casualty loss for your real property is calculated using the fair market value before the
flood and after the flood or the cost to restore the home. A decrease in the overall market
value is not included in the casualty loss, for example if the value decreased because you
live in a flood zone. The casualty loss for personal property is the fair market value of the
property. The loss is limited to your adjusted basis in the property, typically your cost. The
casualty loss must be reduced by insurance proceeds or other reimbursements received.
WILDLIFE - THEY’RE EVERYWHERE
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Love them or hate them, they’re everywhere!
I’m talking about those funny little critters called
squirrels. As the fall baby season is coming to an
end, TWRC Wildlife Center has been inundated with
babies. What is normally a very busy time anyway,
Hurricane Harvey only added to the numbers. Hundreds
of orphans were admitted and will continue
to be cared for until they are ready for release.
The Houston area is home to the gray squirrel, the fox squirrel and the flying squirrel.
About 90% of the squirrels in our area are gray squirrels. Most people have never seen
a flying squirrel because they are nocturnal. They are very small and their tail acts as
a rudder to help guide it in flight. They don’t have wings but rather skin that forms
“flaps” that stretch between the “ankle” and “wrist.” If you’ve ever seen a squirrel
eating out of a “squirrel-proof” bird feeder, then you know how intelligent they are.
They have also been known to pretend to bury food just to trick other animals. A 2010
study showed that when a squirrel is being watched, they will actually dig a hole, pat
it with their front teeth and scrape dirt over it to make it look like they are burying a
treasure when, in fact, they are hiding their stash in a pocket near their armpit.
Here are some things you probably don’t know about squirrels:
• A squirrel’s front teeth never stop growing. In the wild, squirrels are constantly
gnawing which keeps them short.
• When you see squirrels running and zig-zagging in your yard, they are doing this
to avoid capture by a predator.
• Baby squirrels are only about an inch long when they’re born.
• There are 285 species of squirrels and they can be found in every continent
except Antarctica and Australia.
• Squirrels have four toes on the front feet and five on theback feet.
• Squirrels will twitch their tails to alert other squirrels to possible danger.
• Squirrels have more than one nest. If one gets destroyed or infested with insects,
they always have a back-up.
TWRC Wildlife Center is a 38-year-old non-profit in Houston that rehabilitates injured and
orphaned wildlife with the goal of releasing healthy animals back to the wild. If you love
wildlife and want to help, go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or you can call 713-468-8972.
GET INTO THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT!
Feeling a little bah-humbug? Want to be the Grinch and stay that way? It is OKAY! Not
everyone can get into the holiday mood, but you can at least try! Here are 10 ways to
get into the holiday spirit!
1. Reach out to family and friends. Make phone calls to parents, siblings, aunts and
uncles, cousins, whomever you can reach. Ask how they’re doing, exchange news and
feelings and express your love for them.
Have a great
Engagement Story
you want to share?
We want to feature your engagement
stories in the February newsletters!
It can be funny, sentimental,
or just plain embarassing.
Just keep it clean!
Send us a paragraph about your
engagement along with a photo to
lorie@krenekprinting.com no later than
December 20, 2017.
All photos and stories will be published (with approval).
2. Decorate the house. Hang up lights in front of your house, put up
decorations, do everything! Hang wreaths on your front door and put
up flashy lights to show off your spirit! The more decorations you have,
the more festive you’ll feel!
3. Listen to holiday music. Listening to holiday music will pump you up
for the holidays! Play holiday music in the car, at home or just when
you have free time. As you listen, think of all the exciting things that
come with the holidays!
4. Volunteer. You will immediately see, feel and soak in how blessed
YOU ARE.
5. Throw a party! Have a get together with people you haven’t seen in
a long time and express yourself as much as you want. After all, it’s the
holidays, a period of celebration.
6. Go see some holiday lights. If you have nothing better to do, go to
your nearest festival to look at the beautiful holiday lights. During
the nighttime, let yourself be mesmerized by the illuminating lights
wrapped around trees and ornaments.
7. Watch some holiday movies. What better way to get into the holiday
spirit than by watching the classics? If movies don’t cut it or you simply
don’t have the time, take a few minutes to watch some holiday videos.
There are plenty online that will lift your mood and get you all pepped
up for the holidays!
8. Eat seasonal food (with healthy ingredients!) Bake holiday cookies
shaped like turkeys, Christmas trees, Santa, elves, presents, anything!
After all, a baker’s imagination is endless. If you want to be fancier, cook
some holiday food that your parents used to make you.
9. Gift kindness, in all forms. It has become a tradition to buy presents
and gift them to your loved ones during the holiday season.
The holidays are a time of appreciation and love. Don’t forget about
those random acts of kindness to whomever, just because.
10. Have fun! It’s alright if everything isn’t perfect and in fact, that just
proves you’re human. In a couple of years, you’ll all be laughing about
disastrous moments during the holiday season and it’ll all be fine!
SHARE YOUR AMERICA
What if you didn’t have chocolate chip cookies, Dr. Pepper, corndogs
or *gasp* Tex-Mex food or Whataburger? These are just some of the
things that we take for granted every day. Imagine having a whole year
to experience new foods, a new culture, a whole new life! That’s what
hosting an exchange student is all about!
STS Foundation is currently looking for families for the 2018/2019
school year. What does it take to be a host family? STS accepts all types
of families, be it single parents, young marrieds, empty nesters or same
sex couples - we are looking for families that are willing to Share their
America with a high school student for the year. All you need to provide
is three meals a day and a room for them to sleep in. The student can
share a room with a same sex sibling that is within five years of their
age. Each student comes with their own spending money and health
insurance. Most of all, they come with an excitement to learn all they
can about our American way of life.
Hosting is a great way to learn about the student’s culture as well,
perhaps even learn a few new words in a new language. It’s a way of
opening a new world to your children as well. Most importantly, it’s a
way of making the world just a little bit smaller, so that we can all live
in peace and harmony together.
If you are ready for this amazing experience, please give me a call, I’d
love to talk with you more about it. I am one of the Houston area STS
Local Coordinators, I’ve worked with foreign exchange students for
seven years and have also hosted 13 students on my own. I can tell
you anything you need to know about hosting. Please contact Vicki
Odom at 832-455-7881 or via email at vicki.stsfoundation@gmail.com.
STS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization whose mission
is to facilitate educational opportunities where all participants can
break down cultural barriers and gain respect and understanding
of each other’s way of life.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are, please consider and
suggest rescuing vs. buying a dog from a breeder. We have every
breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters,
in great quantities.
This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on
breeding in Texas.
• Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve
purebred animals.
• Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no chance of making it out
of the pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these
dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who
did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real
commitment to their pet.
• Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill
shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them
roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not
understand.
• When you or someone you know considers adopting a dog, please
check out one of our five local animal shelters:
1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care
i.e. Houston’s animal control or city pound
2. Harris County Animal Control
3. Houston SPCA
HARVEY DAMAGE?
READ THIS:
• New law for Harvey/Irma/Maria victims makes it much
easier to get a tax benefit for a casualty loss. Most
people will see a tax savings! Don’t overlook this!
• The potential deduction is the reduction in value of your
home & possessions from the event. Repair costs can be a
measure of this. Keep track of them!
• File claims with your insurance company and with FEMA for
all possible reimbursements. You cannot deduct what you
could have collected.
• You have the option of claiming the loss on your 2017
return, OR your 2016 return for a faster tax refund.
12 PM. Everyone has a story and everyone has memories. Some of
them are good. Others are not so good. But, all of them are valuable.
This workshop is about preserving your family history, one memory at
a time. With the help of your teacher, coach and mentor you will learn
to jar those faded memories loose, then compose, organize, preserve
and share them electronically for future generations. Jackie Devine
loves working with active writers and people who have never tried
to write! This course will help you understand the memoir writing
process: story structure, scenes, dialogue, character development,
tone and voice. You’ll learn that you are creating a legacy. If desired,
stories will be recorded and saved online where family and friends
can enjoy them for years to come. Located behind Juergen’s Hall
ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON SCHOLA CANTORUM
Do you want your children to become lifelong servants of the Church?
Singing in a children’s choir is a great way to help that. The St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton Schola Cantorum is currently accepting children Grades 4-12
for its after-school choir program. The choir is responsible for enriching
the Mass on 10:30 on Sundays and rehearses every Wednesday from
3:45-5 PM. Unique in the area, the choir focuses on singing music from
the rich Catholic tradition, including chant and polyphony, as well
as the finest modern church music. Time is devoted to building the
children’s skills of music reading, vocal technique, thinking about the
words and the structure and meaning of the Mass. Service hours are
available for older students. For more information, please contact Dr.
Douglas O’Neill at doneill@seascs.org.
during your walk, be prepared to scoop and
trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled
grocery bag or anything else. It may not be
the most fabulous way to walk your pet,
but it does show your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community.
VETERINARY PUBLIC
HEALTH DIVISION
(Formerly called Harris County Animal Control)
The Veterinary Public Health Division posts
photos of all animals found on their website
and updates it twice daily. If you have lost
your pet, please check this website,
www.hcphes.org/vph.
Have you lost a pet?
Start your search immediately,
don’t wait to make flyers.
Contact all possible animal control or animal
welfare agencies in the area. Visit each
location at least every other day.
Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip
company to make sure they have current
contact information for you. A citizen
may try to call the veterinarian’s office or
microchip company themselves from your
pet’s tags.
Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert
them to the description of your lost pet in
case someone brings it to their clinic.
Check with your neighbors, especially families
with children and ask if they’ve seen a
pet that looks like yours.
Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet
maybe be nearby but is injured and unable
to get back home.
Leave a towel or article of clothing with your
scent on it outside of your home. Your pet
may be disorientated and will be attracted
by your scent.
Have you found a pet?
First, think of the animal as lost and not
abandoned and make every effort to reunite
the animal to an owner.
Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone
and report the animal as found.
Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or
check with a local veterinarian to scan the
animal for a microchip.
Return to the place where you found the
animal and put up a found pet poster near
that location.
If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper
or website posting, ask them to provide
a picture of the animal and meet in a
public place like a police station.
More information about Microchips
& Microchip companies
A microchip is a small device (size of a grain
of rice) that is permanent and implanted
with a needle under the skin of pets.
Pets do not have to be given any pain medication
or anesthesia to implant a microchip.
Microchips are not likely to move or need
repair if implanted correctly.
Microchips, when scanned, show a unique
code. The microchip must be registered with
the corresponding microchip manufacture
to record any owner and animal data.
Microchips do not work like GPS locators or
LoJack and cannot give a signal to find the
location of your lost pet.
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid of
animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid
the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All
dogs and cats must be kept under restraint
while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat
is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any
unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog
or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog
or cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not
more than six (6) feet in length, if the line
or leash is held by a human being, who is
capable of controlling or governing the dog
or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian
and the animal does not have access to
sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal
out in the yard while you work or play, it is
against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and
comfortable place for all our residents by being
responsible pet owners. This will not only protect
anyone who may be walking or bicycling
in the area, but also the pet owner who could
be held legally responsible or possibly sued for
failing to properly restrain their pet.
Please remember that cats fall under the same
laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept
restrained when not on the premises of the
owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth
balls in flower beds might keep cats away.
To make a complaint or report an animal that
is not properly restrained please contact:
