IT’S ALL ABOUT PLAY CAPTIVATES THE CITY
it’s
Last year, the City of Wanneroo
implemented the It’s All About Play
program at its libraries, creating a
unique play environment for children
aged under four.
“It has been wonderful to see the
large number of parents and children
attending the It’s All About Play
sessions at our libraries each week,
enjoying rhymes, songs and play,”
Mayor Tracey Roberts said.
It’s All About Play has been so
successful that other councils are now
following the City’s lead, implementing
their own programs within their areas.
The City of Fremantle has rolled out the
program at three locations, and the City
of Canning is looking at implementing it
at four libraries next year.
“We’ve been coming to It’s All
About Play since it started and
we love the play time with other
kids - it’s a great way to meet
other mums and be part of the
community,” Rachel Sunderland,
mother to Bailey Harvey
(12 months).
Currently, the sessions are run at
Wanneroo, Clarkson, Girrawheen and
Alkimos pop-up library, with up to
80 children attending each event.
“I take my daughter here and
we love it. I run a family day
care, so I thought I’d bring
along Reya who I’m looking
after today,” Mansi Pajwani,
family day care owner and carer
of Reya Karira (2 years old).
It’s All About Play was developed
following the findings from the federally
funded Australian Early Development
Census, to target children in their early
years of life.
Through the use of equipment, toys and
books, children coming along to the
sessions are engaged in fun activities to
assist with developmental growth.
To complement the program, the
City partnered with Edith Cowan
University’s ‘Pregnancy to Parenthood
(P2P) Clinic’, Department of Child and
Adolescence Community Heath, Child
Health Nurses (CHN), and speech
pathologists.
An intern from the P2P Clinic attends
each session of It’s All About Play to
offer support, and the CHNs run their
drop-in clinics from rooms close by.
“It’s All About Play is very
hands on and rather than sit
back and watch your kids
play, as a parent you really
get a chance to get involved
in the sessions,” Elaine Sheriff,
mother to Savannah (4) and
Hunter (2).
Off the back of the program’s
popularity, the City of Wanneroo
applied for funding from the Building
Better Regions program and was
awarded a $19,000 grant.
The City will use the money to bring
It’s All About Play to the Yanchep/
Two Rocks library in 2018, and to
continue the sessions at the Alkimos
pop-up library.
SENIORS
AGE FRIENDLY STRATEGY PUT IN PLACE
The City of Wanneroo is
implementing an Age Friendly
Strategy over the next three years
which will see the City further
support seniors in line with
World Health Organisation (WHO)
recommendations.
“This strategy will help the City
become a more age-friendly place to
live, work and visit.
“It is important we begin to lay the
foundations now to ensure we are
well placed to meet the changing
demands that will be placed on the
City’s services,
amenities, partners and community
groups,” Mayor Tracey Roberts said.
“It is vital we have an inclusive
community and that our seniors are
healthy, active and engaged.”
The goals of the strategy are to further
recognise the diversity among older
people, while promoting the inclusion
and contribution of the elderly in all
areas of community life.
The City has more than 18,000
residents aged 65 years and over,
with this figure set to increase to
more than 22,500 by 2020.
