Volunteer firies seek financial support
Volunteer Rural Fire Brigades
are a vital service in communities
such as ours.
There are more than 36,000
volunteer firefighters across
Queensland alone, men
and women willing to drop
everything and put themselves
in danger to protect our homes
and businesses from fire.
Apart from the Government’s
supply of vehicles and their
maintenance, many country
and rural fire brigades across
Australia are largely selffunded,
so that each volunteer
brigade relies mostly on private
donations and fundraisers
to purchase even their basic
essential equipment.
There are brigades throughout
Farmers create employment
At a recent public meeting
in Oakey, farmers were condemned
for not employing onfarm
This perception is wrong. Every
Political candidates
Watching the recent State
election and the increasing dissatisfaction
of regional voters
around the State that are noticeably
giving their votes to the One
Nation Party, it was interesting
to see that even though there is
a growing number of One Nation
supporters, largely due, I
suspect, to an accruing loyalty
for Pauline Hanson herself, that
her party was unsuccessful in
converting this shift in votes to
actual seats in Parliament.
After witnessing One Nation
candidate Frank Ashman
stumble and balk with obvious
ignorance, unable to answer relative
questions repeatedly asked,
about how he would best represent
Oakey on several important
issues, like the water contamination,
local business, housing and
real estate, I can see why One
Nation struggles to secure seats.
Mr Ashman stated he wanted
to address drug problems in the
area.
When challenged on the fact
that by taking immediate jobs
out of the area that are providing
local families with financial security
and community stability,
he would only be adding to the
problem.
I was appalled by his reply “a
good person comes from a good
family upbringing.”
A response I believe, to be a
ridiculously misinformed and
insensitive retort to the issue of
drugs, alluding, that if you are
somebody that has been affected
by drugs that you are a bad
person from a poor family upbringing.
A response that understandably
invoked a reaction of personal
emotions from locals.
This forum together with One
Nation’s inability to secure any
electorates has highlighted several
things for me.
Firstly, that Pauline Hanson
and her One Nation Party need
to more thoroughly screen their
prospective candidates in an effort
to providing representatives
who are better informed, have
extensive knowledge of local
and surrounding issues, possess
the ability and willingness to
genuinely and unselfishly serve
all of the constituents they stand
to represent and that these candidates
permanently live in the
electorate for which they stand,
not just visit for a week-end here
and there as it suits.
For your information Mr
Ashman, there are plenty of upstanding
community members
throughout our nation, who have
raised their families instilling
strong family morals, Christian
beliefs and high community values
that for many reasons have
become vulnerable and have
succumbed to the evil predators
spreading the scourge of drugs.
Drug abuse is not just specific
to the youth in our communities
and it is not always because of
neglect or reckless behaviour.
Drugs can affect anyone and
for a range of reasons, despair
and helplessness due to drought,
job losses, financial stress, mental
illness to mention a few.
Few of us have the luxury of
being Frank Ashman with bucket
loads of money and not a care
in the world.
Perhaps if your fanaticism of
shutting down the New Acland
Mine wasn’t the only agenda
pushing your political aspirations,
you could become better
informed about the real issues
that are affecting the many communities
in the Condamine electorate.
Men’s Shed gives a man that safe
and busy environment where he
can find many of these things in
an atmosphere of old-fashioned
Changes to Cooyar postal agency arrangements
By MILES NOLLER
The postal service in the town of Cooyar has
undergone dramatic change with the closure of
the local Australia Post agency.
From last Friday, December 1, a mail contractor
has been engaged to collect Cooyar mail
from Yarraman, and deliver it to the 51 or so
households in Cooyar.
This is a three-day a week service.
A problem has been that no household has
ever had a mailbox. Residents have always
picked up their mail from the local Post Office
or agency.
A spokesman for Australia Post said if there
is no mailbox to deliver to, people would have
to pick up their mail from Yarraman.
However, the spokesman said Australia Post
is offering Cooyar residents a six months mail
redirection service at no cost.
It is understood that the operators of the Cooyar
store which had the postal agency, decided
they no longer wanted the agency.
Local community leaders met with Australia
Post representatives from Brisbane for an alternative
post box/agency arrangement, but agreement
could not be reached.
Paul Barron and other executive members of
the Cooyar Agricultural and Pastoral Society
met with the representative and proposed that
post boxes be installed at the local hall.
Mr Barron said Australia Post would not contribute
anything to the cost of these mail boxes.
A problem for residents of both Cooyar town,
and the district, is that they will have to drive
to Yarraman, about 30km away, to pick-up a
registered mail item or package that requires a
signature. For some, that could be 40km away.
Food festival and markets replace Block Party
The December 16 Crave Food
Festival is a Christmas edition
and will be a collaboration between
the Crave Food Festival
and Highfields Village Market.
As you would be aware
the Highfields Block Party was
an event that had incredible
community involvement and
celebrated all things Highfields.
The cancellation of the Block
Party this year left organisations
without the opportunity for major
fundraising, not to mention
a disappointed Highfields community
who flocked to this event
each year.
grateful,” Quinn said.
Penny Hamilton, Yellow-
said Christmas was meant
to be a special time of the year
filled with love and happiness.
“Sadly, this is not the case
for some people who will spend
Christmas alone or are unable to
afford extra special food to make
it a memorable day for them and
YellowBridge returns with Christmas buckets for the needy
Toowoomba
“This year our aim is to fill
Bridge to reach their target of
buckets filled,” Director Amanda
Roberts said.
“Helping local people by supporting
the Yellow Bucket Appeal
is a wonderful way for us
“We are really pleased to partner
our generous staff are already
getting together their donations
in an effort to beat last year’s
Heritage Bank has announced
the appointment of
Paul Williams to the Chief
Financial Officer role on a permanent
basis.
Mr Williams has been with
Heritage Bank since 2000, initially
as Treasurer and more
recently as Chief Strategy and
Investment Officer.
He has been acting as interim
CFO for the past 12 months,
while the incumbent Mr Peter
Cleary has dealt with ongoing
health issues.
Mr Cleary has now stepped
down from the CFO role and
taken up a position as Special
Adviser to the CEO.
Mr Peter Lock said he was
delighted to announce that Mr
Williams had accepted the new
role.Paul’s commitment, passion
and energy for our business
is outstanding,” Mr Lock
said.
"As CFO, Paul will have
responsibility for Finance,
Treasury, Strategy and our new
Business Intelligence capabilities.
"We are excited to announce
Paul’s position and to recognise
the contribution he has
made to Heritage over the
years in his Treasury and Strategy
roles.
“Combining Paul’s previous
experience and duties with that
of the CFO will make this a
seamless transition.
"This is a demanding and
complex role.
“I’m sure Paul will continue
to thrive in the position, and
deliver outstanding results for
Heitage.”
Before joining Heritage,
Mr Williams held a number
of Treasury roles at Bank of
Queensland and before that
property analyst roles in Sydney
and Durban, South Africa.
Mr Lock also applauded the
contribution that Peter Cleary
had made during his long career
at Heritage.
"I want to thank Peter for
his commitment, guidance and
tireless effort as our CFO.
"We wish him all the best as
he continues in his recovery
journey, and we’re delighted
that he will remain at Heritage
in his new role and we will
continue to benefit from his
expertise and presence.”
Thank You!!!
To the voters of Condamine for their support
last Saturday, I thank you.
From a One Nation viewpoint we are elated with our
result.
We were lightly staffed, poorly funded, late starters,
but determined!
Our stand to protect and preserve extremely
valuable agricultural land and its water has been
acknowledged; also landowners rights have been
reinforced ensuring viable agricultural enterprises
remain intact. Our ideals have impacted on the major
parties with a sympathetic swing.
CHRISTIAN COMMENT
Cricket is a funny game, you
can bowl all day and beat the
batsmen on many occasions but
not get a wicket just for the next
bowler to come and bowl an average
delivery but gets the wicket.
It is frustrating when you don't
always get the reward you expected.
The reality is that you have to
move on and bowl the next ball.
Moving on is an important step
in life whether on the sporting
field or in life situations.
You can't safely move forward
while looking in the rear mirror.
As we mature we find it easier
to walk away from certain circumstances
and let it go through to the
keeper.
Someone wrote: “When we
stop expecting life to be perfect,
for people to be the best they can
be, we are no longer holding ourselves
down with things that are
out of our control, we have grown
and matured enough to appreciate
both life and the people in our
lives for what and who they are.”
of moving on and being focused
Celebrations included an address
by Mrs Elizabeth Gillam,
Chair of Council, and The Right
Reverend Cameron Venables,
Bishop of the Western Region
gave the blessing.
Guest speaker at the Middle
and Senior Years celebration was
Professor Helen Chenery, Executive
Dean of the Faculty of
Health Sciences and Medicine at
Bond University.
All three special guests took
part in presenting prizes.
In her address, Mrs Cohen
talked about the importance of
the core values of Respect, Integrity,
Compassion and Courage
and the role that these play in the
lives of the Glennie community
every day in all they do.
She also launched the new
Strategic Plan, which is made up
of five pillars: Empowered Girls,
Enriched Learning, Passionate
Staff, Connected Community
and Sustainable Operations.
She introduced the Glennie
theme for 2018: Be Like a Girl,
in line with the School’s motto of
Be All She Can Be.
She encouraged the students to
embrace being female and to see
it as being an advantage, and not
a barrier, in being anything they
can be.
She explained that to be like
a girl means to be feminine yet
strong, compassionate yet firm,
nurturing yet challenging, gracious
yet competitive, thoughtful
yet ambitious, respectful yet respected,
helpful yet independent
November, late on the Saturday night we received
a message from Kuala Lumpur announcing
italktravel Highfields as the recipients of an
award for Outstanding Achievement in 2017.
We are so humbled and encouraged to receive this in our first 16 months of talking all things
travel with the Highfields community. Thank you for embracing us. This reward reflects
our incredible team of consultants who are so passionate about travel and dedicated to
ensuring that our clients receive personal and tailored holiday experiences that are magical
To our amazing clients and the Highfields community we would like to say thank you.
to bring a travel agency to our part of the world, as we felt that it was something that was
missing. We thank you for giving us a go, we thank you for your kind referrals. In fact
until the end of February any new referral to our business by you will see you receive a $50
Avocado prices unlikely to fall as crop forecast cut
An early start to the storm
Paul Barron 0429 926 111 or 0746 926 111
Avocados Australia CEO
John Tyas said, based on the
early flowering, there were early
forecasts that up to 75,000
tonnes of fruit could be harvested
throughout 2017-18 but
this was looking increasingly
unlikely.
“Now that orchards have
been through the fruit set period,
some regions are reporting
poorer fruit set than was expected,
despite a very good flowering
initially,” Mr Tyas said.
“Added to this, we have already
had hail storms in avocado
growing regions in North
Queensland and Northern New
South Wales, plus repeated severe
spring storms in Central
Queensland.
“Obviously, we still have
the summer storm season and
the usual hot dry conditions in
southern areas to come as well.”
Mr Tyas, pictured, said the
situation was compounded for
the local market by a potential
50 per cent reduction in the
New Zealand crop.
“New Zealand supplements
our Australian supply during
spring and summer, so although
Australia’s supply forecast for
the year is still up, New Zealand’s
‘off-year’ means total
supplies are likely to be similar
to last year,” he said.
“I’d expect supply to be
steady during the next couple of
months and fruit could be a bit
short in the first quarter of 2018.
Mr Tyas said that as for prices,
they are determined by supply
