Food is always on our
minds here at 22nd
Century Media, especially
when it comes time for
one of us to write the next
Dish article.
You’ve most likely seen
the weekly feature in our
papers before; The Dish
features a different eatery
in the area every week with
mouth-watering photos sure
to make you hungry — even
if you just ate lunch.
With papers in Orland
Park, Tinley Park, Mokena,
New Lenox, Frankfort,
Homer Glen and Lockport,
it seems like we would never
run out of options for content,
but, alas, we do.
So, I’m going to give you
a little peek into our newsroom
— the inside scoop, if
you will.
And now I’m thinking
about ice cream ...
Anyway, back to The
nfyn
From Page 16
Calling all foodies
“The athletic director of
Stagg High School was accused
of improper conduct,”
said Michael Orloff, a parent
of a Stagg cheerleader.
“Another female employee,
who is head coach for the
co-ed cheer at Stagg, was
accused of far less serious
allegations and was
removed pending investigation.
Now, we’re hearing
that a third person has come
forward about this conduct.
Yet, the board still has taken
no action.
“Why is [Treasure] not
suspended pending investigation?”
Nogal responded after
Orloff’s comments by saying
only one complaint has
Dish. Every week, a different
member of our editorial
team is assigned to visit an
establishment within our
readership area, write an
article about it and take some
tantalizing foodie photos of
the menu items.
The article and accompanying
photos are then
featured in all seven of our
weekly papers because, let’s
be honest, who only eats
out within the boundaries of
their hometown?
From the newsroom side
of things, it is sometimes
difficult to get businesses
on board with the feature,
which is a great opportunity
for them to get the word out
about their menu offerings.
Now, this isn’t paid content,
as many people think,
and it’s not about getting free
advertising either. It is an editorial
piece and therefore has
a newsworthy aspect to it.
It’s also not a review, and
we don’t give our opinions
on the food. It is simply an
article featuring the history
of the establishment, the
owner, the staff or any other
number of interesting aspects
of the business — and, of
course, the dishes along with
their prices.
Basically, we let the food
descriptions, prices and photos
speak for themselves.
The Dish is a great opportunity
for us to feature
locally owned places, and
many times we will scope
out a place that has opened
recently, has an upcoming
special event or has revamped
their menu.
Sometimes we will feature
a restaurant we have written
about in the past, but maybe
it has been a while. It gives
us the opportunity to check
in and see how businesses
are doing after a few years
or feature them when a big
anniversary comes around.
So, what I’m really getting
at is that I want some ideas
from you. I certainly could
never visit every restaurant
in our circulation area on
my own. But, collectively
someone out there knows the
hole-in-the-wall places with
the best nachos in the whole
world, pizza that you can’t
refuse another slice of, or the
kind of homemade ice cream
that you can write home
about.
Seriously though, I must
have ice cream on the brain
right now.
Do you know of any
special holiday events going
on at an area establishment?
Has there been a big change
in the menu or ownership of
a local favorite?
Maybe you have a favorite
restaurant you’d like to see
featured in our papers, or
been brought to the board’s
attention.
“We’re not aware of any
other complaints,” he said.
“Only one complaint has
been brought before the
board, but it is currently under
consideration and investigation.”
maybe you’re a restaurant
special to offer for the
for The Dish.
