As technology continues
to advance exponentially, it
seems more and more classroom
work will be done digitally.
And with the recent
focus of studies on science,
technology, engineering and
math, St. Mary Catholic
School wants to make sure
its students are able to keep
pace and not lose another
important area of study: the
arts.
Eighth-graders at the
school are currently in the
process of developing their
own short films using stop
motion capture technology.
The process blends the fundamental
aspects of STEM
with the arts, creating what
is known as STEAM.
“They have to make their
sets, make their characters.
They have to come up with
a script and a storyline. They
make storyboards. Then they
have to put it together using
stop motion. And since
we have our … iPads, it’s
kind of perfect,” said Heidi
Drennan, art teacher. “They
have that technology in their
hands and they get to use it
in a creative way.”
Apple offers a special
lease program to the school,
which allows the students
to use the iPads for a number
of tasks, including taking
the information stored
in iMotion and transforming
it into finished movie using
iMovie.
Courtney Godvout, of
Mokena. Julia Vagley, of
Frankfort and Kailey Hadley,
of Mokena are creating a
film where an Oreo falls into
a lake of milk and Melky
Cabrerra — the one-time
White Sox player — has to
save the Oreo.
The group said there are
some problems with technology
“glitching out” or
freezing, but otherwise they
said they’re comfortable using
the technology.
Meanwhile, Mike Hurley,
of Orland Park, Logan Andrews,
of New Lenox, Aidan
Hennessy, of Mokena and
Sam Murphy, of Frankfort
decided they collectively
didn’t have much in the way
of traditional artistic talents,
so they decided to incorporate
green screen technology
in their project. The premise
is a character named Robert
is mad at himself for not
making the best pizza, so
he decides to not give up
and keep trying to make the
world’s greatest pizza. The
green screen will be used to
add some explosions during
poor Robert’s failed attempts
at pizza perfection.
The students will continue
to work on their projects for
the remainder of the trimester,
which will culminate
in a presentation where the
students will get to show
off their finished projects to
each other some time at the
end of December or early
January.
