The York’s UFO Post tells you all you
need to know about what’s going to
happen to bring ultrafast internet to
your area in the coming weeks.

Making York the UK’s first ultrafast,
Ultra Fibre Optic city
From being founded by
the Romans in AD 71 to
running trains direct to
London in 1840, York has
a long history of making
history. And it’s happening
again. York is set to become
the UK’s first ultrafast,
Ultra Fibre Optic city.
What is York’s
Ultra Fibre Optic?
Remember when
broadband landed and it felt
like the future was here?
Well, the arrival of Ultra Fibre
Optic takes the internet to
another level.
With a full fibre connection,
everything the internet has
to offer can travel at the
speed of light right to your
door. With speeds of up
to 20x faster than the UK’s
average fibre*, not only
does it make downloading,
streaming, and even
uploading lightning fast and
super smooth, this stronger,
more powerful connection is
guaranteed to stay that way
- all day every day for all the
years to come.
Ultra Fibre Optic gives you
the power to stream more,
create more, experience
more. And York is getting
exclusive access to the
future of the internet before
the rest of the UK.
*20x faster than the UK’s average fibre: York’s Ultra Fibre Optic from TalkTalk delivers speeds more than 900Mb/s compared to the UK average Fibre broadband (FTTC) download
speed (44.9Mb/s) from OFCOM UK Home Broadband Performance report November 2016.
Connecting your street
to Ultra Fibre Optic
Building a state of the art, full fibre network is no easy feat as we need to lay
fibre along each street we build, while keeping to a minimum any disruption to
the residents and businesses we need to serve. We do this in 3 stages:
1 2 3
Install UFO street
cabinets and ports
in the pavement
Open up the pavement with
a narrow trencher and lay
protective ducts between
cabinets and ports
Blow fibre optic glass
through the ducts
Innovating to
minimise disruption
We are working with our construction partners and City
of York Council to find the easiest, least disruptive ways
to build York’s UFO across the city and have jointly come
up with innovative ways to achieve this.
• We use a narrow trencher to
dig a very small trench
• We do this along the
pavement rather than the
road for less traffic and
parking disruption
• We try to use existing ducts
and poles instead of new ones
• We refill the pavement with
top quality materials
If you have any queries or concerns about the work in your area please give us a call on
0800 542 8073 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm

04
Connecting your
home or business
The final stage will be connecting
your property to the fibre in the
street. As UFO is 100% percent
fibre from the exchange all the
way into your home or business,
unlike other fibre that uses copper
or cable to get to your home,
it means we also need to lay
fibre from the street port on the
pavement in to your property.
We can only do this when you
have placed an order and given us
permission. On the install day, our
engineers will agree with you the
best place for the equipment in
and outside of your property.
They dig a very narrow trench
across your garden or driveway
and put it back as they found
it. Over 96% of York’s UFO
customers rated their UFO install
as good, very good or excellent*
due to the care taken by our
skilled engineers, all City & Guilds
trained in ground works.
If you have any questions about
where UFO will need to go we can
send someone to discuss it with
you before you order, just call us
on 0800 230 0272.
What
happens
next?
Two weeks before we come to build
the network in your street, we’ll let
you know by popping a letter through
your door. We’ll also send a reminder
around 48 hours before work begins.
Something to
remember.
If you live or work in a rented property,
we’ll need the property owner’s
permission to lay fibre. Or, if you live in
a private road or development, we may
need permission from all the residents
before laying UFO. But don’t worry, we
can help you get this done. Just call us
on 0800 542 8073.
