Winter 2017 

As we move towards the long winter months there 

are, quite apart from Brexit, some unsettling 

unknowns facing our Town Centre and local traders. 

NatWest has closed its doors leaving many of their 

customers without a local facility and the rest of the 

town’s shops rueing the loss of the facility and footfall. 

The future of this iconic building is still some way off 

being decided, but it is to be hoped that a positive 

solution for its ongoing use will be found soon. We do not 

need any more empty buildings in our Town centre (and 

dare we suggest we already have a large range of coffee 

or charity shops?) 

The threat to the future of Malvern’s Tourist Information 

Centre is also very real. Thanks to Rodney of Malvern 

Goldsmiths (and a number of supporting Traders) plus 

our Town Council, manual and on-line petitions have 

found support from circa 3500 people – a massive 

statement of what local people and visitors feel. Let us 

hope that those responsible for its future recognise the 

strength of local feelings about the viability of our Town 

Centre and ensure that an equitable and sustainable 

solution is put in place 

Town Centres are continually evolving, with some 

businesses opening, some 

closing and some changing 

ownership due to retirement 

or ill-health. Here in Malvern 

we can be thankful that the 

Entrepreneurial Spirit is alive 

and well, due in no small 

part to the support of local 

shoppers who are keen to be 

an active part of a lively, 

happy community.

Victims of crime 

always lose out 

It is a sad fact of life that victims of crime lose out 

both emotionally and financially. Although 

insurance can help to mitigate loss and restore 

property and goods, it is often the emotional loss 

that has the most long-lasting effect, and for some 

this lasts for the rest of their lives. 

The recent brutal attack on Barnard’s Green Post Office 

has left the local community with a sense of outrage and 

loss. We can barely imagine what this has meant to Jenny 

Cain and her team, and it is a huge credit to them that 

they have borne this terrible situation with fortitude and 

stoicism. They have continued to provide a much-valued 

service throughout this 

huge disruption. We should 

all visit them and say a few 

kind words of thanks. They 

have been a wonderful 

example of all that is good 

with our local business in 

Barnard’s Green 

Our local independent shops 

have a tough time surviving 

in this era of large retail 

parks, supermarkets and online 

shopping. Your support 

is vital to both theirs and 

your other local amenities 

So, as the Post Office returns

Q How many points do I get when I am shopping 

A Each business will vary, but most offer 1 point for every 

complete pound spent. Some businesses have very low operating 

margins, others may have already offered a sale or discount price, 

so they will issue points accordingly. Equally, some businesses 

may offer a special figure or double points as a promotional 

measure. If you have any concerns then please ask the business
