Protecting depositors’ funds<br />

Umaru Ibrahim, mni, the Managing<br />

Director/Chief Executive<br />

Officer of the Nigeria Deposit<br />

Insurance Corporation was appointed<br />

Managing Director/Chief Executive<br />

Officer on the 8th of <strong>Dec</strong>ember 2010.<br />

Since his appointment, he has moved<br />

strongly against insider related credit<br />

in the banking industry in a bid to<br />

improve corporate governance and<br />

reduce the incidence of poor credit<br />

practices in the banking industry. He<br />

has also brought innovation in bank<br />

distress resolution in the country.<br />

Despite a deteriorating economic<br />

environment, NDIC, working closely<br />

with the CBN has ensured stability in<br />

the Nigerian banking industry.<br />

Before his present appointment,<br />

he rose from an Administrative Officer<br />

in the Cabinet Office of the Kano<br />

State Government, to the post of<br />

Permanent Secretary within a period<br />

of ten years due to hard and diligent<br />

work. He served in several Ministries<br />

and Departments until 1989 when<br />

he joined the NDIC. He joined the<br />

all the avenues for sharp practices,<br />

into the management and execution<br />

of the mandate of NIS including<br />

championing Ease of Doing<br />

Business through the introduction<br />

of Visa on Arrival; Harmonized Arrival<br />

and Departure cards to reduce<br />

multiplicity of agencies clearance<br />

at ports of entry; decentralized<br />

administration and issuance of<br />

passport; as well as domestication<br />

of fees in Naira for the payment of<br />

residence permit. He has also enhanced<br />

feedback and information<br />

for NIS publics on NIS website as<br />

well as domestication and operationalisation<br />

of the Executive Order<br />

1-3 for all NIS formations.<br />

He hails from Jigawa State. He obtained<br />

a Bachelor of Arts degree in<br />

History/Islamic Studies and also has<br />

a Masters degree in Law Enforcement<br />

and Criminal Justice. Prior<br />

to his recent appointment, he was<br />

the DCG, Operations & Passports, a<br />

position he attained in January 20<strong>14</strong>.<br />

Mohammad Babandede<br />

Comptroller-General<br />

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)<br />

between <strong>Dec</strong>ember 2012 and January<br />

20<strong>14</strong>. He has been awarded as<br />

Member of the Order of the Federal<br />

Republic, MFR. He is reputed for<br />

having many years of exposure to<br />

foreign missions and other MDAs<br />

outside the NIS. He is currently the<br />

longest service top officer in the NIS.<br />

Ensuring conduciveness of Nigeria’s<br />

business environment<br />

Under her leadership, the NIPC<br />

recently launched the first ever<br />

Compendium of Investment Incentives<br />

in Nigeria (the Compendium).<br />

The Compendium is a compilation of<br />

tax, tariff, export and sector based incentives,<br />

approved by Federal Government of<br />

Nigeria and supported by various legislation.<br />

NIPC, through the Compendium,<br />

aims to provide existing and new investors<br />

relevant information on available<br />

incentives with the overall objective of<br />

promoting new and incremental investments<br />

in Nigeria.<br />

Also her reforms at NIPC, in active cooperation<br />

with other strategic ministries,<br />

saw Nigeria move on the global ranking<br />

of the Ease of Doing Business, from 169th<br />

to <strong>14</strong>5th recently.<br />

She is in regular contact with the Securities<br />

& Exchange Commission, The Nigerian<br />

Stock Exchange and other regulatory<br />

authorities as well as several of Nigeria’s<br />

leading corporations and multinationals<br />

at the senior management levels. A<br />

member of the Nigerian Economic Summit<br />

Group, Sadiku once served as the<br />

chairperson of the Rules and Regulations<br />

sub-Committee of SEC’s Capital Market<br />

Committee.<br />

Before her appointment as Executive<br />

Secretary/CEO of NIPC, she was<br />

the Executive Director of Corporate and<br />

Transactional Banking at Stanbic IBTC<br />

Holdings Plc. She has also served as<br />

Chief Executive of Stanbic IBTC Capital<br />

Limited, Head of Finance Department<br />

of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc. She was re-<br />

Since assuming office, Abdul-Raheem<br />

Adebayo Shittu has spearheaded<br />

and presided over pragmatic<br />

and tangible transformations in<br />

the management and execution of the<br />

mandate of the Federal Ministry of Communications<br />

including the establishment<br />

and take-off of the first ICT University in<br />

Nigeria, as well as the implementation of<br />

the Federal Government’s ICT Policy on<br />

Patronage of local ICT entrepreneurs in<br />

ICT products and services.<br />

Furthermore, the Minister and his<br />

team at the Ministry are championing<br />

e-governance practices and procedures<br />

across the various departments and agencies<br />

of the Federal Government in order<br />

to reverse and resolve the ghost worker<br />

syndrome.<br />

In addition, under the Honourable<br />

Minister’s watch, the coordination and<br />

collaboration between the National<br />

Universities Commission (NUC) and<br />

Nigerian Communications Commission<br />

(NCC) on the utilisation of tele-conferencing<br />

as a tool for teaching specialised<br />

courses such as Medicine has been better<br />

Sadiku holds a Bachelor’s degree in<br />

Industrial Chemistry from the University<br />

of Benin and an MBA from University<br />

of Warwick, United Kingdom. She<br />

started her banking career with the<br />

Nigeria International Bank Ltd., where<br />

she worked from 1992 to 1994.<br />

Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Shittu<br />

Hon. Minister of Communications<br />

implemented and executed.<br />

Abul-Raheem Shittu obtained his first<br />

degree in law(LL.B) at the University of<br />

Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University,<br />

Ile-Ife between 1974 to 1978; and then<br />

attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria<br />

Island, Lagos. In the course of his<br />

legal career, Adebayo Shittu authored 13<br />

books and made valuable contributions<br />

to the development of ground-breaking<br />

policy papers.
