The legend of Lakeview Harley
He may not be Winx, but around
the greyhound tracks of Gippsland
the legend of Lakeview Harley
continues to grow.
Metung owned and trained by the
Whelan family, Harley is a veteran
of 126 race starts for 16 wins,
31 seconds and 30 thirds. He has
won on all three Gippsland tracks;
Warragul, Traralgon and Sale. His
record at Sale is exceptional with
13 wins and 24 placings, where he
has been crowned Greyhound of the
Year. Surprisingly Harley has never
broken through for a city win, but has
recorded nine placings at Sandown
and the Meadows. He has amassed
over $51,000 prizemoney in his
career.

Miss also has amazing career stats
with 107 starts for eight wins and 39
placings and $21,000 prizemoney.
Their sire, Collision, a very
successful dog himself is owned and
managed at stud by former Saints and
Swans champion, Tony Lockett.
The Whelans have established
an idyllic training complex at
Metung overlooking the magnificent
Gippsland Lakes; hence the name
Lakeview prefacing many of their
greyhounds’ names.
The property has a long straight
run for galloping, sunny day yards
and spotless, warm kennels for night.
Monique, Harley and Luke share
the training duties and are currently
enjoying a great run of success with
winners Harley, Lakeview Miss,
Lakeview Lyn and also city winners
Lakeview Isla and Lakeview Maisey.
A 5am start to a 7pm finish is a
typical day at the kennels with the
occasional 2am finish if returning
from the city. Being the most easterly
based trainers in Victoria the tyranny
of distance can be an obstacle with
the team tallying up over 60 thousand
kilometres already this year.
More affectionately known as
Bartel and Summer, the longevity of
Harley and Lakeview Miss with over
230 starts is testament to the training
skills, dedication and care from the
Whelan family.
When Boxing Day rolls around
and the popping of champagne corks
echo around the Gippsland Lakes,
you could be excused for thinking it is
to announce the arrival of the holiday
set in Metung. Make no mistake,
that will be the Whelans celebrating
the 5th birthdays of their grand old
warrior Harley and his sister. Happy
birthday champs and well done.
