The legend of Lakeview Harley<br />
He may not be Winx, but around<br />
the greyhound tracks of Gippsland<br />
the legend of Lakeview Harley<br />
continues to grow.<br />
Metung owned and trained by the<br />
Whelan family, Harley is a veteran<br />
of 126 race starts for 16 wins,<br />
31 seconds and 30 thirds. He has<br />
won on all three Gippsland tracks;<br />
Warragul, Traralgon and Sale. His<br />
record at Sale is exceptional with<br />
13 wins and 24 placings, where he<br />
has been crowned Greyhound of the<br />
Year. Surprisingly Harley has never<br />
broken through for a city win, but has<br />
recorded nine placings at Sandown<br />
and the Meadows. He has amassed<br />
over $51,000 prizemoney in his<br />
career.<br />
Harley’s litter sister, Lakeview<br />
Miss also has amazing career stats<br />
with 107 starts for eight wins and 39<br />
placings and $21,000 prizemoney.<br />
Their sire, Collision, a very<br />
successful dog himself is owned and<br />
managed at stud by former Saints and<br />
Swans champion, Tony Lockett.<br />
The Whelans have established<br />
an idyllic training complex at<br />
Metung overlooking the magnificent<br />
Gippsland Lakes; hence the name<br />
Lakeview prefacing many of their<br />
greyhounds’ names.<br />

run for galloping, sunny day yards<br />
and spotless, warm kennels for night.<br />

A 5am start to a 7pm finish is a<br />
typical day at the kennels with the<br />
occasional 2am finish if returning<br />
from the city. Being the most easterly<br />
based trainers in Victoria the tyranny<br />
of distance can be an obstacle with<br />
the team tallying up over 60 thousand<br />
kilometres already this year.<br />
More affectionately known as<br />
Bartel and Summer, the longevity of<br />
Harley and Lakeview Miss with over<br />
230 starts is testament to the training<br />
skills, dedication and care from the<br />
Whelan family.<br />
When Boxing Day rolls around<br />
and the popping of champagne corks<br />
echo around the Gippsland Lakes,<br />
you could be excused for thinking it is<br />
to announce the arrival of the holiday<br />
set in Metung. Make no mistake,<br />
that will be the Whelans celebrating<br />
the 5th birthdays of their grand old<br />
warrior Harley and his sister. Happy<br />
