Australian and Lakes Entrance Skeet
shooter Aislin Jones shows nerves
of steel at the recent ISSF World
Championship in Moscow, Russia.
Young gun Olympian Aislin Jones has a cool head on young shoulders
When most people in Australia
think of teenage Olympians,
gymnasts are an obvious first
to come to mind, some think
of swimmers. Very few people
mention shooting athletes. Probably
because most of the names that
spring to mind like Russell Mark,
Deserie Baynes, Adam Vella, Suzy
Balogh & Michael Diamond are
now well into their 40’s or 50’s.
Catherine Skinner would be the
youngest medalist that may come to
mind, though she’s in her late 20’s.
That makes the East Gippsland
community a little different to most
other parts of Australia.
LOCAL WRITER
If you ask people in East
Gippsland who they think of when
it comes to teenage Olympians,
they’re probably going to name
Aislin Jones - or at the very least
respond with something like,
“That girl from Lakes Entrance
who shoots clay targets, what’s her
name?”
Many people will pronounce her
name a little differently, it’s actually
pronounced “Ash-lyn” but they’ll
have the right person.
At just 16 years of age in 2016
she became the youngest person to
ever shoot for Australia in Olympic
competition, breaking a record set
by 25 metre pistol athlete, Peter
Papps in 1956 when he turned 17
during the Melbourne Olympics.
Aislin was the youngest of all
international shooting athletes at
Rio, all 390 of them in pistol, rifle
and shotgun disciplines. She was
more than 30 years younger than
Fehaid Al-Deehani from Kuwait
who won the gold medal in the
Men’s Double Trap event.
So how does a 16 year old from
Lakes Entrance end up travelling
the world shooting clay targets?
And what opportunities does the
sport offer to other teenagers like
her?
Aislin’s story is by now well
known, so we’ll only summarise it
here, but she is very keen to explore
the opportunities that she believes
the sport offers other rural teenagers
- more so she believes than kids her
age who are often thought to have
more opportunities growing up in
the city.
With shift working parents, when
mum was working on weekends
Aislin spent a lot of time at age
9 or 10, with her sister, Renae,
following dad, Dave, around at
Bairnsdale Field & Game. They
watched on as he and others shot
clay targets. Over time they started
scoring or pressing the button to
release clay targets, getting a bit
excited about finding the odd whole
target someone else had missed in
flight to break, or collecting empty
shotgun cartridges of different
colours. As a result of Renae’s
handy work, a string of them now
adorns the Christmas tree, the
variety of colours lit by a string
of lights adding a topical sporting
touch to their festive season.
Once old enough to give the
game a try, Aislin accepted a new
challenge and the pathway that
followed was as exciting as it was
unforeseen. Stepping forward a few
years to 2017, Aislin’s progression
from starting competition in clay
target shooting in 2012, through
her progression from sporting to
a discipline known as American
Skeet, and then into Olympic or
ISSF Skeet, has been an incredible
journey involving significant
success, learning opportunities
from events she considers failures,
to travel opportunities to compete
in every state in Australia - more
than once or twice.
By Konrad Marshall
RRP: $34.99
Konrad Marshall spent 2016
and 2017 inside the Richmond
Football Club. His story is the
most revealing narrative of an
AFL club ever written, and
explains how the Tigers came
from the depths of despair
to claim premiership glory.
“Football clubs are the sum of
so many parts, each playing
a role, each connected to our
purpose to thrive and win. But there is so much that sits beneath
the surface, not seen by those outside our four walls. This book
takes you inside those walls”. Damien Hardwick, October 2017.
‘Saga Land’
By Richard Fidler
& Kári Gíslason
RRP: $39.99
Broadcaster Richard Fidler
and author Kári Gíslason are
good friends who share a
deep attachment to the sagas
of Iceland - the true stories of
the first Viking families who
settled on that remote island in
the Middle Ages.
These are tales of blood
feuds, of dangerous women, and people who are compelled
to kill the ones they love the most. The sagas are among
the greatest stories ever written, but the identity of their authors
is largely unknown. Together, Richard and Kári travel across
Iceland, to the places where the sagas unfolded a thousand
years ago.
They cross fields, streams and fjords to immerse themselves
in the folklore of this fiercely beautiful island. And there is
another mission: to resolve a longstanding family mystery -
a gift from Kari’s Icelandic father that might connect him to
the greatest of the saga authors. Limited number of signed
“The plan was an important
part. A goal without a plan
is just a dream.” - Aislin Jones
FROM PAGE 1
She has also picked up a few
supporters along the way. In
addition to support from a few local
businesses, Aislin is the youngest
shooting athlete in Australia on
the Beretta Italy factory team,
and as their brand ambassador
made the extra effort to gain all
the permits required to make sure
she shot the ammunition at the
Rio Olympics that her sponsor
Bronze Wing Ammunition produce
in Maryborough in Victoria - a
significant achievement for a small
manufacturer on the world stage.
In addition to domestic
competition her growing list of
international destinations is one to
make seasoned travellers jealous.
Her international travel before she’s
even reached her 18th year includes
trips to Germany (3), Italy (twice),
Azerbaijan, Qatar, Brazil, India,
the USA, Mexico and Russia.
While it isn’t a medal, achieving
gold frequent flyer status at 17 is
seriously impressive.
As she added to her experience,
so grew her resume. At 17 she has
been the number one ranked woman
in open age competition in Australia
for nearly two years. She made her
first final at an international event
at 15, Olympian at 16 and her first
international podium at 17. This
year she also came 4th at the World
Championships in Junior Women’s
competition in Moscow. Her peak
at 22nd as the youngest athlete on
the international rankings will no
doubt see higher rankings in year
to come as she develops in a sport
where careers span decades. USA
based colleague Kimberley Rhode
is the only summer Olympian to
have medalled at six consecutive
Olympics in any summer discipline.
When asked what it has been that
contributed most significantly to
her success, Aislin gives a carefully
considered reply, “I guess in the
first place it was opportunity. Then
a plan, good coaching and a lot of
hard work.”
“The plan was an important
part. A goal without a plan is just a
dream,” Aislin added.
That opportunity is being
enhanced in rural Victoria, where
several regional sports academies
are leading the country in junior
development. Aislin has been very
involved in the Gippsland Sports
Academy Junior Development
Squad - more as patron than
participant, raising more than $5000
in the past two years to support
other Gippsland aspiring junior
athletes getting access to the same
level of coaching that she has had.
Programs now run in Gippsland,
Mildura, Bendigo and the South
Western District, where Aislin’s
Australian team mate Penny Smith
coaches 20 juniors in trap shooting
“An Olympic Trap facility can
be built at an existing club for
as little as $120,000.”
around Warrnambool.
Aislin’s father Dave has
been instrumental in setting
up the program, which brings
internationally renowned coaches
Russell & Lauryn Mark to
Gippsland clubs to coach junior
athletes at clubs in Gippsland,
saving families the expenses
and time associated with each
individually travelling to coaching
in Melbourne.
The program, entering it’s
second year in 2018 has already
achieved early success, with
Ben Burchell from Bairnsdale
travelling with an Australian
junior team to compete in Suhl,
Germany in 2017. Korumburra’s
Jack Stockdale travelled to the
USA for the American Skeet Junior
World Championships, following
success at State and National
Championships in Australia,
and four New Zealand National
Championships.
Six time Olympian, Gold Medalist
and World Champion, Russell Mark
said of the 2017 program which
concluded in August this year, “not
all of them will end up at the next
Olympic Games, but it’s important
that they can all understand the way
that they need to progress to to get
to the next level, and this is providing
a great foundation.”
On the level of investment
required, Dave puts it in perspective
against other sports. He elaborated,
“An Olympic Trap facility can be
built at an existing club for as little
as $120,000.”
“It’s relatively easy to get
$500,000 for lights for a footy oval
from government, or $50m for an
Olympic Pool in Traralgon. All we
want is about 20 centimetres of the
Olympic Pool to be spent on an
Olympic Trap venue somewhere
this side of Traralgon.”
But for now, Dave’s more excited
about the fact that in December
Aislin will be announced as a
member of the Australian team for
the Gold Coast Commonwealth
Games in 2018. With one selection
event left as we go to print, Aislin’s
place on the team is already
assured. Her unassailable lead in the
selection series has already marked
the young Olympian as someone to
watch on the Gold Coast in April.
The events of the charge at
Beersheba remembered,
100 years on
The 100th anniversary of the
famous charge of the Australian
Light Horse was commemorated
recently.
The small village of Metung
has a significant connection to the
events on that day. John Cyril Bell,
Joseph Clarence Bull and Albert
Reginald Howlett were three local
young men present on the day of
the charge.
After the Beersheba wells
had been captured and as the
light was fading, Major General
Harry Chauvel summoned the 8th
Regiment to assemble and to await
his further orders.
Joe Bull wrote in his diary of a
lone German plane that flew over the
assembled regiment and dropped
four bombs, instantly killing four
men and 24 horses. Many more
were wounded, including Lt.Col.
Leslie Maygar and trooper Howlett
who both consequently died from
their severe injuries.
Leslie Maygar, who was a
Victoria Cross recipient, was also
the commander of the last 40 men
to complete the evacuation of
Gallipoli. Albert survived for 10
days, but lost his brave fight on
November 10, Remembrance Day
eve.
Joe Bull and John Bell survived
the bombing and the war and
eventually returned safely to
settle and work in Metung. John
eventually married Ivy Howlett,
Albert’s younger sister.
A large group of Albert’s
relatives gathered in Metung on
Remembrance Day to acknowledge
the events and his sacrifice
exactly100 years later.
The following morning many
also attended St Johns, Metung
where Albert is listed on the Honour
Board.
Two other members of the
Howlett family, Loch (Milne Bay)
and Tom (El Alamein) were also
remembered and a wreath presented
in their honour. It was the 75th
anniversary of them both losing
their lives in World War Two.
125g butter
2 medium-sized onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
¾ cup medium-grain rice
½ cup toasted pine nuts
½ cup sultanas
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
½ cup (125ml) sweet red wine
1½ cups (125ml) chicken stock
salt and freshly ground black pepper
Courtesy of Yvonne Kaponis
Method
Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add
onion and garlic, increase heat to high and cook,
stirring, until onions have a very dark, rich colour —
be careful they don’t burn. Add rice, nuts, sultanas,
spices, red wine and stock, and season with salt
and pepper. Bring to the boil, stirring continuously,
then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Turn
off heat, cover and set aside for 30 minutes. The
rice should be soft and the stuffing a rich brown
colour. Check seasoning.
This stuffing can be used for chicken, lamb or
vegetables. It can also be used as a side dish.
Artist Rod Cross finds his calling
Born in Sale, Rod Cross always
showed artistic ability from a young
age. His father, Leon, was a highly
skilled, self-taught signwriter and
started a business, ‘Provincial
Signs’ in Sale in 1961.
Rod has an older and younger
brother, and one by one they joined
the business as it grew.
Rod left Sale Technical School,
excelling in art, especially
sketching and life drawing. He
started work as a ticket writer in
a local department store, Foards.
Rod was shocked to be asked to
paint 50 showcards on his first day
with no training! The self taught
trend swept into motion.
After four years, Rod left to join
his father and older brother, Ken, in
the family business and was later
joined by younger brother Geoff.
A true family affair with his mother
keeping the books.
Everyone got on well and
his father taught his sons the
importance of always doing your
best and striving for perfection. It
showed in the finished product and
resulted in very successful business.
All through this time, Rod’s
father also passed on his passion
and knowledge of wooden boats
and the Gippsland Lakes. Rod has
been on a wooden boat on the lakes
for as long as he can remember,
exploring almost every nook and
cranny on the Lakes. Between
them, the family has designed and
built cabins on several of their
renowned boats. Rod completed
his own restoration job including
new cabin and extensive alterations
on his beloved 28’ ex crayboat,
‘Casey’ in 2012.
When computers took over the
signwriting trade in the late 1980’s,
his father retired to Metung and
the boys set about transitioning the
business from the old to the new.
This was successfully completed
and although more work was
produced and some mundane tasks
were eliminated, sadness existed
with the virtual loss of the art of
hand lettering.
By 2013, hand lettering was
almost a forgotten art, so Rod
became increasingly disenchanted
with the computerized industry
and decided it was time to retire to
Metung, get back on the pencil and
brush and have a go at watercolour
painting.
Reading some books and
watching a few videos he was able
to pick up the threads and the self
taught trend continued on.
He started painting in his purpose
built studio in 2014 and developed
his own style, somewhere between
realism and impressionism.
Although he paints many
different subjects it was a natural
tendency to specialize in wooden
boats, especially on his beloved
Gippsland Lakes.
Rod has completed many
boat commissions for satisfied
customers. His work improved
dramatically after a few meetings
with the world renowned
watercolourist, Robert Wade, who
very generously showed him some
techniques and gave him some
invaluable advice. He was also
delighted that Rod had followed
the same path he did – (family
business, ticket writing and then
self taught artist).
Rod’s work is displayed at the
Sculpture Gallery at Fulham
(near Sale), Metung Hotel and
Bancroft Bites (Metung).
Dr Kate, doing something for ‘Endangered’ dolphins
The Gippsland Lakes is one of
only two places in Victoria where
the newly described Burrunan
dolphin, Tursiops australis, has an
established a resident population.
Only described in 2011 by Marine
Mammal Foundation’s Director, Dr
Kate Charlton-Robb, the Burrunan
is already listed as ‘Endangered’
under Victoria’s Flora and Fauna
Guarantee Act.
Dr Kate has been researching the
Gippsland Lakes Burrunan dolphin
since 2006, when she commenced
her PhD studies. Having completed
her PhD studies, with one of the
main outcome being the formal
description and naming of the
Burrunan dolphin, Dr Kate went on
the establish the Marine Mammal
Foundation, with the specific goal
of conducting applied research with
conservation outcomes.
The Burrunan is characterised
by small, isolated and genetically
distinct populations in Victoria,
Tasmania and South Australia. The
Burrunan are not found anywhere
else on Earth! Working with
Aboriginal elders and VACL, Dr
Kate named the dolphin ‘Burrunan’
as it is the Aboriginal name given to
dolphins meaning “name of a large
sea fish of the porpoise kind.”
The Burrunan dolphin is about
2.5m in length and has a distinct
tri-colouration pattern, from dark
grey on the upper side of the body,
a paler grey midline and cream
underside. The cream underside
can extend over the eye, whilst the
grey mid-line forms shoulder blaze
(a brushstroke pattern) below the
falcate (curved) dorsal fin.
The Burrunan has broad tail
flukes, a prominent rounded head
and a short stubby rostrum (nose).
Project Burrunan – Gippsland
aims gain estimates of overall
population size and structure,
assess whether the population is
stable (or otherwise), assess levels
of residency through genetic and
individual dolphin fin identification,
assess the potential migration and
identify areas of significance within
the Lakes and Gippsland coastal
region (i.e breeding and feeding
grounds).
On a broader scale, Project
Burrunan will assist in assessing
the wider species’ distribution
and range, the level of gene flow
between the discrete populations
and to the potential migration
pathways. In doing so we will gain
a better scientific understanding
which can be used for specialised
management, protection and
conservation of this iconic endemic
dolphin species.
What do we know about the
Gippsland Lakes Burrunan
dolphin?
The Gippsland Lakes has a
resident population of about 65
Burrunan dolphins. The population
is incredibly small with only
about 64 resident dolphins. So, in
comparison to places like Shark
Bay, WA, where the population is
3000+ of the more common species,
our population is incredibly small.
This resident population is found
in the Lakes across all seasons and
is maternal based, meaning that the
females remain in the system year
round.
In winter, we see a doubling of
the population with transient males
coming in to feed and mix with
the female Burrunan dolphins! We
observed the same transient males
coming into the Lakes every year.
The main calving season is during
the winter period (unlike most
dolphin populations’ world-wide),
this winter calving coinciding with
the influx of male dolphins.
The dolphins can form very
strong bonds, called social alliances,
that can last years. The females with
calves remain in nursey pods which
allow a ‘shared-care’ arrangement,
whereby mothers can go off and
feed, whilst another mother looks
after multiple calves!
Over recent years, we have seen
a seasonal shift in habitat use,
with the dolphins observed more
frequently in Lake King to the
Entrance during winter and then
further down Lake Victoria in the
summer. Our current research is
aiming to determine if this shift
is reflective of increased boat
traffic over the summer period,
or if environmental drivers, such
as prey, are driving the change.
As a part of the research we are
conducting boat-based surveys
across the Lakes and land-based
surveys at Lakes Entrance to assess
the level of boat traffic, vessel
interactions with dolphins, vessel
and dolphin behaviour, and the
level of compliance to the Wildlife
(Marine Mammal) Regulations
2009.
Under these regulations vessels
(powered and unpowered) are not
to approach the dolphins within
100m, whilst jetskis are not to
approach within 300m. This allows
the dolphin to choose whether to
interact, or not.
We have seen vessels directly
approaching dolphins, breaching
these regulations, and in response
have observed negative behaviour
from the dolphins, such as a change
from resting or feeding to fast
travel, and tail slapping. If you
could imagine you were having
a rest and a noisy car drove into
your house, it would have a major
impact on what you were doing!
These changes to their required
core biological activity can
impact on the population’s health.
We aim to increase community
understanding to minimise the
threats, reduce harassment and
potential injury.
In summer we will be launching
a new information booklet and
conducting numerous community
information presentations across
the Gippsland Lakes.
This research in 2017 is funded
by the Victorian State Government
for the Gippsland Lakes.
East Gippsland business owners will
have the chance to meet with the
Minister for Energy, Environment and
Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, over
rising energy costs, if she is true to her
word.
Speaking in State Parliament last
week, the Minister said “I would be
happy to meet anywhere with any
business right across the state to
discuss any energy costs challenges
they are facing”
Gippsland East Nationals MP, Tim
Bull, commended the Minister on her
commitment to travel the state and said
he has had a number of local business
owners take up the offer of having the
Minister visit to discuss the matter.
“My response has been prompted
by the Minister’s previous statement
that the impact of Hazelwood’s closure
would be around the order of a four per
cent increase to electricity costs” said
Mr Bull.
“Clearly that’s not the experience in
East Gippsland and it is clearly not the
situation state-wide.”
“My personal view is that the Minister
does not understand the impact that
power prices are having on the viability
of business.
“As an example, the Bairnsdale RSL
has reported a 95 per cent increase in
its electricity bill that is adding $80,000
to its annual running costs.
“Cranes Asphalting and Bitumen
Sealing and Eastern Asphalt are
experiencing electricity price increases
in the order of 110 per cent and I have
had a large number of other businesses
reporting rises of over 50 per cent.
“Price hikes of this magnitude can’t
just be absorbed or passed on. They are
resulting in serious cut backs to staffing
levels, reduced investment in plant and
equipment and sadly, in some cases,
business closures.
“A number of businesses have
MP, Tim Bull, with Michael Crane,
Sealing and Eastern Asphalt, which
increases in the order of 110 per cent.
Minister offers to meet business owners
already taken up the offer to meet with
the Minister and any others can contact
my office.
“Whilst I hold grave doubts the
Minister will agree to meet as she said,
I am happy to extend the invitation after
her generous offer.”
Move forward with solar power
See why more and more consumers are making the switch to solar
Moving with the times is key in
any industry and for Bairnsdale
business East Gippsland Solar,
makes up an important part of their
business.
Solar Consultant John
Hulme said the combination
of experience – the business
has been operating more than
18 years – combined with the
latest in industry technology and
knowledge means there’s more
options now than ever before.
“East Gippsland Solar has been
providing solutions to solar energy
needs for more than 18 years. Our
experience ensures that we can
provide the best solution to meet
your needs.
“We can assist with on and
off grid systems, battery storage,
solar heating for pools, improving
air quality in the home with
roof ventilation, solar hot water
systems and more.”
Mr Hulme said technology and
quality of product is developing
rapidly.
“There are advances every day.
At East Gippsland Solar, we only
use high quality products that are
backed up by the manufacturer.
“This means that the products
we install last, and if there is any
issue with them, we are able to
respond quickly.”
Mr Hulme said with rising
power prices and people’s
increasing awareness of their
carbon footprint, many people
are looking for sustainable
alternatives.
“Solar power is a great way to
reduce your power bill, with the
option of feeding excess power
back into the grid and earning
credits on their power bill. There’s
also the option of going completely
off grid, making full use of the
technology available in terms of
solar panels, battery storage and
solar hot water systems,” he said.
“You can also use batteries as
back-up power if you choose to
stay on the power grid, ensuring
your power bill stays as low as
possible.”
However solar power is not just
for domestic use.
“We’re seeing an increase in
commercial use of solar power
throughout the region. Schools
and businesses of various sizes are
getting their systems upgraded to
include solar power,” he said.
“The sky is the limit in terms of
where this technology could go.”
Metung Yacht Club
This year marks Metung Yacht
Club’s 80th year of sailing on the
magnificent Gippsland Lakes,
Australia’s largest inland waterway.
With some of the best sailing water
in Australia for its mixed fleet of
yachts, MYC offers a range of
sailing for all levels.
There is an active junior
program, beginning with Optimist
dinghies and graduating to the
more challenging international
Cadet dinghies. To build their
skills and confidence, junior sailors
are encouraged to sail with senior
sailors where possible.
MYC’s fleet of keel boats race
each Saturday during the season.
The fleet includes an eclectic mix
of yachts, supported by well-known
one design classes, including
Dragons and Etchells. MYC’s
sailing program is supported by
“Metung II” on station as the start
boat for many of the races, with a
fleet of other smaller boats assisting
the fleet on the course, and acting
as safety boats in regattas.
Once a month on Sunday MYC
runs a race for the classic wooden
boat fleet, which compete for the
Scarborough Cup. This fleet is
made up of larger couta boats,
smaller gaff rigged vessels, and
older wooden yachts, such as the
stately Hereschoff H28.
MYC’s Wednesday evening
sailing program is designed to
encourage anyone interested in
sailing to come and “have a go” and
sail with an experienced skipper.
Join the Metung
annual Christmas
Carols Night
The Lions Club of Metung will hold its annual Christmas
Carols on the Metung Village Green on Sunday, 17th
December 2017 commencing with a BBQ at 5.00pm
and Carol singing at 6.00pm.
We will be entertained by the Metung and Nungurner
Primary School choirs, the Lakes Entrance Girl Singers
choir, our MC John Couzens and the East Gippsland
Symphonia orchestra. Santa Claus will be arriving at
7.30pm with lots of goodies for the children.
The 200 plus audience picnic on the Village Green,
enjoy and join in with the entertainment making it a
very festive Christmas Carols event.
Races start at 6.15pm so there is
plenty of time to get to Metung
after work.
MYC will host two national
championships later in December
and in early January.
The first will be the 56th
Cadet Nationals Championships
(sponsored by Gippsland
Grammar School) and will see 130
young sailors with ages up to 18
years, racing on Bancroft Bay and
Lake King from 28th December
2017 to 4th January 2018. This is
the first time Metung Yacht Club
has conducted the Cadet Nationals
although the Club has had a fleet
of International Cadets since
1964, the first boats having been
built by local fathers. The present
National Coach, Tony Bull, learnt
to sail at Metung and the boat he
learnt in is still used today. Up to
65 boats are expected to take part,
which will include entrants from
Victoria, NSW, South Australia
and Tasmania.
Following the Cadet Nationals
the Club will host the prestigious
Prince Philip Cup, the Australasian
Championship for Dragons with
racing from 7th to 18th January.
Around 25 Dragons are
expected to compete. Crews are
coming from Norway and the
United Kingdom to race against
Dragons from the Royal Sydney
Yacht Squadron, from the Royal
Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in
Perth, from the Royal Brighton
Yacht Club in Melbourne, and
against MYC’s fleet of Dragons
Viewing of both these events will
be possible from the boardwalk
in Bancroft Bay, the Back Beach
behind Metung Village or, in the
case of the dragons, from vantage
points in Tambo Bluff.
Whilst all this activity is
going on the Metung Yacht Club
The Mountain Cattlemen, a proud history
Around 1833 a hardy Scot
called James McFarlane crossed
the Snowy River with his cattle
and settled on what was to
become known as McFarlane’s
Flat. The source of the Murray
River is just over the ridge and the
country was, and still is, wild and
remote. McFarlane was tough and
resourceful and a true pioneer.
He became the first Victorian
Mountain Cattlemen, running
his cattle in the shadow of some
of Australia’s highest peaks and
its longest river. After extensive
research, the MCAV put this
year as 1834. This is significant
for Victoria’s history, because it
is before the Henty’s arrived at
Portland. Later, in 1835 McFarlane
relocated to the Omeo Plains
near Benambra, joining other
well-known families such as the
Pendergasts.
Over the next 100 years families
from all sides of the Victorian
High Country discovered the High
Plains and began the annual trek to
the snow leases with their cattle.
The proud heritage and history of
the Mountain Cattlemen gradually
emerged. The Cattlemen’s
families became the public face
and spokespeople for much of
the modern history of the High
Country.
In the 1950’s and 1960’s
pressure to stop Alpine grazing by
environmentalists resulted in many
runs on the more exposed peaks
closed and others under threat.
In response the Mountain
Cattlemen formed the Mountain
Cattlemen’s Association of
Victoria (MCAV) to fight the
movement which threatened the
very way of life and traditions of
the Cattlemen’s families.
The Cattlemen argued that
Alpine grazing kept the summer
grass short and green and reduced
the intensity of Bushfires. They
supported and copied the traditional
burning methods of the first people
but were stopped during their
annual cool burning management
by the Authorities. They said
they intended to protect their
families and their (and Victoria’s)
proud history and culture forged
under great hardships in remote
places in the High Country.
Environmentalists claimed the
cattle damaged the Environment.
There were demonstrations in
favour and against the Cattlemen
and they were in the media
constantly for ten years as the
Government attempted to create
the Park.
In the late nineteen eighties, the
fight to create an Alpine National
Park and remove grazing came to
a head with a political compromise
whereby the Park was created
and in return the Cattlemen were
granted seven year renewable
licences to graze in the new Park.
In 2005 the State Government
broke the arrangement and its word
and cancelled Alpine Grazing in the
Alpine National Park. This political
betrayal caused great bitterness
among the families which is still
felt today. There are still grazing
licensees operating in Victorian
State forest.
Cattlemen and friends gather
each year. Since the mid 1970’s
the MCAV has held an annual
‘Get Together’ to celebrate the
history and culture of the Mountain
Cattlemen. Part of the weekend
is the prestigious ‘Mountain
Cattlemen’s Cup’, packhorse races,
and lots of fun.
This event is increasing in
popularity and every year more
families, come and camp for
the three day festival. Last year
at Buchan, the biggest MCAV
Get-together ever was held. The
2018 Get Together will be held at
the Ferguson families beautiful
property ‘Livingstone Waters’
Omeo from Jan 12-14 2018.
Events of interest include the tug
of war, whip cracking, dog high
jump, special events for children as
well as our traditional horse events
including the prestigious Mountain
Cattlemen’s Cup Challenge. The
bush poetry competition and
historical panel discussions in
the heritage tent are very popular
on Saturdays, while children are
entertained at the kids tent and
Friday night disco.
The Cattlemen’s Bar will be a
friendly meeting point surrounded
by plenty of trade stalls and food
outlets. Night entertainment
includes a variety of live bands
Nature
inspired art
on show
Fernbank artists Malcolm
Boyd and Paul Gennings use a
variety of techniques, both in
making and firing, the two artists
produce ceramic and sculptural
work that is eclectic and inspiring.
Drawing from their surrounding
environment, living and creating in
regional Victoria.
Having their studios side by side
in Fernbank they interact and create
quite extraordinary work. Malcolm
uses clay, hand dug locally and fired
in his wood fired kilns. Paul uses
alternative firing techniques such as
oil firing and Raku, combined with
steel and timber.
Malcolm Boyd’s love of nature
and landscape shines through in
his work, reflecting over 38 years
experience and passion for his art,
and well known for his generosity
of spirit, knowledge and passion
for process of creative pot making.
Some of the raw materials used
in the works are collected locally,
making every piece unique.
Wood firing in one of three high
temperature kilns confirms if all
the patience, love and hard work
is successful. When asked to
describe his work Paul explains,
“My ceramic process is a melding
of clay, steel and fire. Most pieces
are inspired by my immediate
surroundings and love of Australian
native fauna and flora.
“I enjoy the challenge of
balancing the aesthetics of the
materials I use and the environment
they will be displayed in, hoping
ultimately that the conversation
between the artwork and it’s
environment is one of harmony.”
Both Malcolm and Paul’s work
are held in both private and public
collections in Australia. Both have
exhibited widely in both solo and
group exhibitions and Paul has
exhibited internationally.
They continue to exhibit and
enjoy the chance to show their
work, combining once a year
to exhibit together in an annual
exhibition. Malcolm and Paul open
their studios to the public so people
can come and see their process
of making and enjoy seeing their
latest works being created.
Life-saving defibrillator packages
can be acquired by Gippsland’s notfor-profit
community organisations
and venues delivering sport and active
recreation programs, according to
Gippsland East Nationals MP, Tim Bull.
“They can be a lifesaving asset for
any organisation, so I encourage local
groups to apply to the Defibrillators
for Sporting Clubs and Facilities
Program by the 22 December closing
date”, Mr Bull said.
“The package includes a Philips
HeartStart FRx Automatic External
Defibrillator (AED), some basic
emergency resuscitation skills training
and six years of essential defibrillator
maintenance.
“An AED is a small portable
medical device that detects heart
electrical activity and delivers an
electric shock based on the readings.
As it’s automatic and has clear
instructions, it doesn’t require a
paramedic to operate it and can be
used by anyone. This makes it an
essential life-saving tool for sporting
clubs, giving nearby spectators the
opportunity to save a life.
“In 2017, Sudden Cardiac Arrest
(SCA) is one of the leading causes
of death in Australia. With more than
33,000 Australians experiencing an
out of hospital SCA every year, many
falling victim at sports clubs, it’s
important to seek ways to look after
players and spectators and prevent
unexpected deaths.
“A SCA is caused by an underlying
problem that results in the heart’s
electrical system malfunctioning.
These heart conditions are often
genetic and symptom-less or by a
heart being placed under extreme
stress in something like a normal
Saturday afternoon sporting game.
“They’re lethal and the best way
to restart the heart is by using an
Automatic External Defibrillator or AED.
“In a life threatening situation
every second counts and people in
Gippsland deserve the best chance
at surviving a sudden cardiac arrest.
“This is a great opportunity for
club members to boost their first aid
skills, improve planning for medical
emergencies and ensure players or
spectators suffering sudden cardiac
arrest get help until paramedics
arrive”, Mr Bull said.
Wee Bee ready to hit the track
Granddaughter of Melbourne Cup winning mare Lets Elope set to follow in footsteps
The race looked over for the
favourite, Viking, when he crashed
in front of a huge crowd gathered
at the Bairnsdale racecourse in
January 1870. Legendary Australian
poet and crack steeplechase jockey,
Adam Lindsay Gordon, Viking’s
rider, lay bleeding on the track.
Local horseman Willie Cunningham
had other ideas. He hurdled the
fence, mounted old Viking and
galloped him home to win an
extraordinary race.
Fine horsemanship clearly runs
deep in the Cunningham bloodlines.
Take the recent case of local
husband and wife team, Danny and
Julie Cunningham, quietly slipping
over the border to Bombala with
their nine year old maiden mare,
Suri. Against all odds the grand
old lady saluted for her first win;
surely a testament to the training
skills, care and amazing patience
of Danny, Julie and owners, the
Pattison family.
Danny, originally from Nar Nar
Goon, came to Bairnsdale to play
football and took up the manager/
studmaster role at Desmond Park
Stud around 1980. Julie honed her
training skills with master trainer
George Hanlon at Epsom and rode
local champ Family Of Man in
trackwork. She also rode Arwon in
work, spending hours conditioning
him at the beach. It was a proud
day for her as strapper when Harry
White guided him home to win the
Cup.
From Bairnsdale they have
launched the careers of many top
gallopers such as Caulfield Cup
winner Diatribe and Oaks winner
Use The Space. Others include
Group One placed Between
Ourselves and Cold Hearted who
claimed a victory over the mighty
Placid Ark.
These days, with only a small
team in work, Danny and Julie
can give the individual time and
care needed for each horse. With
Suri flying the flag and promising
youngsters by Magnus and Dash
For Cash ready to hit the track,
the stable is looking forward to a
successful summer on the local
racing scene.
Another imposing unraced filly
in the stable is Wee Bee, a daughter
of Ustinov who is Lets Elope’s son
standing at stud.
Owned by an almost “Who’s
Who in Bairnsdale” syndicate led
by Tim Bull with Doug Vickers,
Ken Curtis, Tanya Murray, Bobby
Edwards and Carmel Dwyer to
mention just a few. This filly
is getting close to her racetrack
debut. Being by Ustinov, she is
bred to get over a bit of ground and
with a little patience, something
the Cunningham stable has in
abundance, it is hoped Wee Bee
develops into a talented staying filly.
Danny and Julie have two
daughters, Sarah and Claire, both
extremely talented horsewomen
continuing the good work.
Sarah is riding trackwork and
strapping winners for the Mike
Moroney stable. Her beaming smile
was telecast all over the country
as she led Tribal Wisdom into the
winners stall at Flemington on Oaks
Day after winning the All Greys
race.
Claire is establishing herself
as a serious trainer at Warwick
Farm and recently had her third
individual city winner with
Fifteen Sunflowers. With years
of experience under her parents’
guidance and then running the Peter
Moody stable in Sydney with great
success, Claire is certainly a young
trainer to watch.
Bairnsdale have four remaining
meetings for the season including
Kids Day out on the 29th of
December. With a little luck and
the spirit of Willie Cunningham
guiding them home, we just might
see Danny and Julie’s colours a
18 DECEMBER 2017 The Great Eastern Mail
The legend of Lakeview Harley
He may not be Winx, but around
the greyhound tracks of Gippsland
the legend of Lakeview Harley
continues to grow.
Metung owned and trained by the
Whelan family, Harley is a veteran
of 126 race starts for 16 wins,
31 seconds and 30 thirds. He has
won on all three Gippsland tracks;
Warragul, Traralgon and Sale. His
record at Sale is exceptional with
13 wins and 24 placings, where he
has been crowned Greyhound of the
Year. Surprisingly Harley has never
broken through for a city win, but has
recorded nine placings at Sandown
and the Meadows. He has amassed
over $51,000 prizemoney in his
career.
Harley’s litter sister, Lakeview
Miss also has amazing career stats
with 107 starts for eight wins and 39
placings and $21,000 prizemoney.
Their sire, Collision, a very
successful dog himself is owned and
managed at stud by former Saints and
Swans champion, Tony Lockett.
The Whelans have established
an idyllic training complex at
Metung overlooking the magnificent
Gippsland Lakes; hence the name
Lakeview prefacing many of their
greyhounds’ names.
The property has a long straight
run for galloping, sunny day yards
and spotless, warm kennels for night.
Monique, Harley and Luke share
the training duties and are currently
enjoying a great run of success with
winners Harley, Lakeview Miss,
Lakeview Lyn and also city winners
Lakeview Isla and Lakeview Maisey.
A 5am start to a 7pm finish is a
typical day at the kennels with the
occasional 2am finish if returning
from the city. Being the most easterly
based trainers in Victoria the tyranny
of distance can be an obstacle with
the team tallying up over 60 thousand
kilometres already this year.
More affectionately known as
Bartel and Summer, the longevity of
Harley and Lakeview Miss with over
230 starts is testament to the training
skills, dedication and care from the
Whelan family.
When Boxing Day rolls around
and the popping of champagne corks
echo around the Gippsland Lakes,
you could be excused for thinking it is
to announce the arrival of the holiday
set in Metung. Make no mistake,
that will be the Whelans celebrating
the 5th birthdays of their grand old
warrior Harley and his sister. Happy
birthday champs and well done.
EUROPEAN
AUTOMOBILE SERVICE
New Nissan X-Trail is...
Seriously Stylish
The 2017 Nissan X-Trail makes the most sense in
entry ST form, where it excels by offering maximum
practicality for minimum outlay. This new mid-life
update brings a nicer cabin design and AEB to the table,
improving it further.
The Nissan X-Trail doesn’t get the plaudits afforded
to the Mazda CX-5 or Hyundai Tucson, but it’s almost
as popular among Australian buyers looking for a
practical, well-priced and trustworthy family car.
In many ways it’s the ST variant that makes the most
sense, because affordability is a trait that plays to the
Nissan’s strengths.
The X-Trail ST is a five-seater with automatic
transmission, costing $30,490 before on-road costs —
on par with a CX-5 Maxx, Tucson Active or Toyota
RAV4 GX. Like the Mitsubishi Outlander, you can
option a third row of seats for $1500.
Cabin space is a selling point for the Nissan, and
that doesn’t change here. Cargo space is 565 litres with
five seats in use — 20 per cent more than the Mazda —
and there’s an under-floor compartment in hose-proof
plastic for dirty or wet stuff, and a 12V outlet.
The back seats are also very spacious in terms of
legroom and headroom, with room for three adults in
the back row thanks to a mostly flat floor. Plus, unlike
many rivals, they slide on rails, and recline.
Up front things are similar, yet appreciably different
than before. For one, X-Trail remains beautifully built,
with a tough and hard-wearing feel giving the promise
of longevity.
There are also some tactile improvements to be
found such as the softer leather console lid, soft-touch
materials scattered about the place to liven up the
otherwise austere plastics and that lovely new steering
wheel that alone adds half a point.
Dynamically, the X-Trail does what it has to do. Its
ride is quite comfortable over cobbled roads or speed
humps, with soft suspension and plenty of travel, and
noise suppression is good.
The fact the MY17 car picks up that lovely new
steering wheel and plusher contact points, as well as the
AEB system, while retaining the old price only builds
its case. At the $30k range the Nissan genuinely justifies
its popularity. This is its heartland, and deservedly so.
community. It’s why they’re proud members of the
local community and are continually looking forward
History
The Dwyer family has a proud history in the
automotive industry. From humble beginnings as
blacksmith and farriers, onto coach builders and
subsequently automobiles. Established in 1898 as
the “East Gippsland Coach Factory” Dwyer’s is
family owned and operated still to this day.
It all began in 1898 with Jeremiah Dwyer. A
young man who built a small shop in Nicholson
Street, Bairnsdale. He operated as the General
Blacksmith and Farrier before the Boer War. By
1912 the business was listed for the first time as the
‘East Gippsland Coach Factory’ and now offered
“Wheelwright Rubber Tyring” while-you-wait. A
side line Paint and Trim business began to operate.
In an exciting move in 1927 Dwyer’s was accepted
as a franchise for English car maker Hillman and
Rover. John Dwyer started working with the family
business on the 27th October – his innings lasting
43 years.
1937 saw the introduction of Diamond T trucks
and the popular Austin cars. Austin remained with
Dwyer’s until 1968. The Austin 7 horsepower
retailed for £199; it’s mind boggling to think what
it would be worth now! Austin cars were doing a
roaring trade and in 1951 their popularity from the
Austin Motor Company meant that vehicles were
now shipped from Longbridge, England.
Dwyer’s is appointed Toyota dealer for East
Gippsland in 1991. This saw the final move
away from the historical birthplace of downtown
Bairnsdale to the Princes Highway site opposite
the East Gippsland Hospital. This move and
the resulting refurbishment and upgrade meant
increased staff numbers, and a better way to deal
with the loyal and growing customer base.
One Hundred Years in Business is celebrated in
1998. The long-term view of the business has kept it
on an even keel and Dwyer’s acknowledges the loyal
support of customers and staff over the one hundred
years. Dwyer’s can say with honesty that they are
here for the long run with a vehicle for everyone.
In 2001 Dwyer’s is appointed Daihatsu Dealer,
owned and operated by Toyota, in both Bairnsdale
and Sale. The Europcar Vehicles Rentals franchise
for Gippsland which started in Sale is now expanded
to Bairnsdale.
For an amazing fifth consecutive year Dwyer’s
is named Toyota Rural Dealer of the Year in 2010
and is also appointed the Volkswagen dealer for
the East Gippsland region for Passenger and
Commercial vehicles by Volkswagen Australia. The
following year celebrates twenty years with Toyota
in Bairnsdale. Dwyer’s Bairnsdale PMA now has 17
franchises compared to seven in 1975, which makes
Dwyer’s very competitive.
The introduction of RAM in 2016 , a large
American Cummins engine dual cab truck, sees
Dwyer’s expand their range even further. It is great
for towing and therefore appeals to the local market.
The replacement of the main dealership beings,
which enables Dwyer’s to operate at the standard
required to grow with Gippsland. And in October
2017 a new dealership was opened.
Fresh, bold
and different
Sophisticated Camry an exciting drive
Sleek and seductive, the eye-catching Camry
blends brilliance with beauty to make a lasting
impression. With its well-earned reputation as
Australia’s favourite mid-size sedan, Camry now
delivers a new dimension of innovation and style for
the modern family car.
Fresh, bold and different. Camry, has been rebuilt
and re-engineered from the ground up. Beneath its
elegant and athletic exterior lines, you’ll find Camry
is underpinned by Toyota’s New Global Architecture,
delivering heightened levels of comfort and driving
performance. This universal design excellence is
matchedwith the intelligence of the latest technology
and safety features.
Consider the features available on this Camry
that have never been fitted to any predecessor: LED
headlights, 19-inch wheels, various driving modes
to choose from, a 10-inch head-up display (HUD),
wireless phone charging, plus all-speed radar cruise
control and AEB – this latter pair being featured even
on the base model.
Settle into the luxurious interior and you’ll quickly
discover why Camry is redefining standards and
raising the expectation of what modern comfort
should be. From the ergonomic driving position to
greater passenger space and elegant interior finishes,
you’ll experience Camry comfort that’s engineered
to impress through openness, simplicity, visibility
and sound. Under the sculptured bonnet you can
choose from the progressive Toyota Hybrid system
on Ascent, Ascent Sport and SL grades, a 2.5L
4-cylinder petrol engine available on all grades, or
step into the V6 power of the sporty SX and SL.
Be surrounded by superb sound in the Ascent,
thanks to the 6-speaker audio system with 7”
colour touchscreen display. It includes Bluetooth®
connectivity, voice recognition, Mobile Assistant,
Miracast, USB and AUX inputs. This rises to an 8”
display in Ascent Sport, SX and SL, and includes
satellite navigation and SUNA traffic channel
updates.
You can also connect your smartphone to all
Camry audio units to open Toyota Link where you
can receive travel information, directions, real time
weather and more, and on SX and SL, the wireless
phone charger removes the hassle of connecting
charging cables.
On all grades, the single touch Electric Park Brake
(EPB) adds an extra level of convenience, and in tight
spaces the reversing camera with moving guidelines
helps provide a clear view of what’s behind.
With a choice of three different engines within
the range, you’re sure to find the perfect strength
to match your sophistication.The 2.5L 4-cylinder
Hybrid engine is available on Ascent, Ascent Sport
and SL, and features reimagined hybrid power and
efficiency.
It seamlessly matches the response of a Dual
VVT-iE (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent E) petrol
engine with the latest Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive®
(HSD) technology. Together they deliver outstanding
performance with enhanced fuel economy.
Built around the world’s leading hybrid technology,
Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® (HSD) in Camry
Hybrid models maximises fuel efficiency without
compromising performance.
The range kicks off at $27,690 before on-road
costs for the Camry Ascent, which equates at launch
to a drive-away figure in Victoria of $31,713 – almost
$5000 more than the campaign drive-away pricing
being offered for years on the old Camry Altise made
in Australia: the pricing of which was subsidised to
keep demand high, and the factory humming.
The Ascent Sport and SX look the winners, though
the Ascent ticks all the requisite safety boxes to
appeal to its target audience. One spec issue you
should know about is the fact that only the Ascent 2.5
gets a full-size spare wheel.
From an ownership angle, you get Toyota’s threeyear/100,000km
warranty, plus improved servicing
intervals of 12 months/15,000km to counteract the
Toyota Service Advantage price cap hike to $195 per
visit over a term of five services or five years.
So that’s a quick look at the 2018 Toyota Camry.
It looks bolder, drives better, offers more technology,
and remains a practical and generally decent-value
offering.
