CLUBHOUSE CONSTRUCTION
We already have funding in place and construction should begin shortly.
There will NOT be an increase in annual assessments as we have funds
in reserve for the pool and we’ll be able to pay back the loan in 10 years.
If you haven’t seen the renderings of both of these, go to www.falconranchhoa.com
CONSERVE WATER-SAVE MONEY-YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
After this winter’s freeze I discovered a few problems with my sprinkler
system. I was able to have the North Fort Bend Water Authority send a
sprinkler system inspector to my house by appointment. They also sent
me $15 and are willing to assist with some of the cost required to make the
needed repairs.
Outdoor irrigation accounts for up to 30% of residential water usage. The
North Fort Bend Water Authority (NFBWA) has determined that if residents
would reduce their water usage by 15% before 2040, construction of over
$400 million worth of new surface water infrastructure can be avoided. NF-
BWA has created a conservation program offering initiatives, which if met
in 2017, will result in lowered water fees in 2018. You can help us conserve
water and save money by helping your MUD District, Ft. Bend MUD 124, meet
the following performance measures:
1. Use the Wise Guy link to arrange for an irrigation expert to visit your house,
evaluate your sprinkler system and give you recommendations on repairs
and/or how to make your system more efficient. This can be done at www.
vepollc.com/wise_request_gis.aspx?wid=1027. There is no obligation to
make the repairs recommended by the irrigator and the inspection costs you
nothing. You will also receive $15 for having your system inspected. Please
call 713-488-8182 for additional help.
2. If you make changes in your irrigation system that are recommended by
the Wise Guy expert (see #1 above), you may be eligible for a partial rebate
on your portion of the cost. To learn more go to
www.talkingsprinkler.com/toolbox/rebate-form.pdf.
Thank you for your help. Jack Moller Director MUD 124
RECYCLE YARD WASTE
Residents of Falcon Ranch could benefit the community, as well as their
own lawns and pocketbooks, with one simple change in lawn maintenance.
If you or your lawn service currently bag grass clippings, simply leaving the
clippings to work down into the lawn will make a huge difference in the
amount of waste our community puts into the landfill each year. It will also
help conserve water, because the clippings will work to maintain moisture
in the soil. Both of these benefits will save money in the long-run. Moreover,
it is estimated that lawns that are naturally fertilized with grass clippings
require 25% less fertilizer - resulting in even more savings to you!
Grass clippings and finely chopped leaves add vital nutrients and organic
matter to the lawn, thus improving the health of the lawn. It isn’t necessary
to use a mulching mower; just mow one inch when grass reaches four inches
tall. The clippings won’t be noticed and will break down within a week.
REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
You may have noticed the constables patrolling our neighborhoods, working
to keep our community safer for everyone. The appearance of constables
has raised a question of what to do if you witness suspicious activity. If you
see something happening that is an emergency, please call 911. If you see
suspicious activities that are not emergencies, call the Fort Bend County
Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665.
SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Are crows as smart as your 7-year-old? Numerous
scientific studies indicate the answer to that question
is yes. In a study done in 2014, crows were trained to
match cards by rewarding them with food when a correct
match was made. Then the experimenters decided
to complicate the test by showing the crows cards
that were not identical but had the same pattern. The
crows were still able to match them. Then there’s the
story of 8-year-old Gabi Mann from Seattle who began
feeding neighborhood crows and in exchange for food, the birds began to bring her gifts.
Corvids, the family of birds that includes crows, are thought by many scientists to be among
the most intelligent animals on earth. Here are just a few of the reasons why. Keep in mind
these conclusions are based on scientific tests.
• Crows recognize faces and hold grudges. Just ask some
researchers in Seattle what happens when you try an
experiment on crows that they don’t like.
• Crows have regional dialects and they communicate
with each other.
• Crows are problem-solvers. A crow unable to crack nuts
was observed putting the nuts on the road and waiting until
cars passed over them.
• Crows use tools. In one experiment, a crow used a wire to
retrieve a stick and then used it to reach some food it want
ed. It was even smart enough to realize it had to bend the
wire first in order to retrieve the stick.
• Crows are caring and nurturing. In 1999, Wallace and Ann
Collito of Massachusetts saw a very small kitten in their yard.
They observed a crow feed the kitten and protect her
fromother animals.
Crows are easily imprinted and when a crow is brought to TWRC Wildlife Center for rehabilitation,
steps are taken to insure this doesn’t happen. If imprinted, the bird loses it fear
of humans and can’t be released. While rehabilitating, human contact is kept to a minimum.
Sometimes caregivers where masks or refrain from letting the bird see their face.
This will insure a successful release. For more information about TWRC Wildlife Center,
Boulevard in Houston.
EASY WAYS TO EAT MORE FRUITS & VEGGIES
The new food plate unveiled by the Department of Agriculture sends a
clear message: eat more fruits and vegetables. Here are easy ways to
get more of these important foods into your diet:
Start early: Get in the recommended five servings of fruits and
vegetables a day by eating them early with your morning meal. Add a
banana to your cereal, berries to your yogurt, veggies to your omelet.
Make them visible: Set out a fruit bowl in the kitchen or have carrot
sticks available for snacking. Take some time to prepare the fruits or
vegetables, so they are ready to eat.
Frozen is good: Frozen vegetables, such as peas and carrots, are a great
way to make sure you always have vegetables in the house.
At mealtime, think of the veggies first, not the protein: Half of your plate
needs to be filled with fruits and vegetables. Base your meals on what
vegetables you’ll have and then think of the grains and protein to go with
it.
Have fruit with your sweets: Fruits are nature’s natural candy. Puree
berries and adding them as a sauce to desserts, such as ice cream.
JUST FOR TODAY
By Dear Abby
This is one of the more popular requested columns from the famous
advice columnist Dear Abby. Read on:
“Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old
habits for healthy new ones and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s
often-requested list of New Year’s Resolutions, which were adapted
by my late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon:
JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about
yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals
or try to overcome all of my problems at once. I know that I can do
something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it
up for a lifetime.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress
me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it
with sunshine.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct
those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that
requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will
be kind and courteous to those who cross my path and I’ll not speak ill
of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly and not interrupt
when someone else is talking.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If
I’m a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully - if only
just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk
walk, even if it’s only around the block.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will gather the courage to do what is right and take
responsibility for my own actions.
WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS?
A New Year’s resolution is a promise a person makes for the new year.
Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life
in the coming year.
Resolutions can come in many forms. Some people make a promise
to change a bad habit, such as quitting smoking or eating less junk
food. Other people make a promise to develop a positive habit, such
as starting an exercise program, volunteering in their community or
recycling more.
The tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates all the way back to 153 B.C.
January is named after Janus, a mythical god of early Rome.
Janus had two faces - one looking forward, one looking backward. This
allowed him to look back on the past and forward toward the future.
On December 31 st , the Romans imagined Janus looking backward into
the old year and forward into the new year. This became a symbolic time
for Romans to make resolutions for the new year and forgive enemies
for troubles in the past.
The Romans also believed Janus could forgive them for their wrong doings
in the previous year. The Romans would give gifts and make promises,
believing Janus would see this and bless them in the year ahead.
And thus the New Year’s resolution was born!
Focus
Happy New Year
Crystal Ball: 2018
New Year’s Resolutions: “Our resolutions are always to do our best each year. We
make reasonable resolutions to do better than the year before.”
How they ring in the new year: “We have a huge Colombian/Mexican Feast! There is
food for days. Tamales, Empanadas, Beans, Natilla, Bunellos, Sweet Breads, Arrepa,
Roasts, Ham...... oh my! We turn up the music, move all the rugs and dance for hours.
The children laugh and play and we end the night with fireworks.”
Special NED Munchies: Mom makes Pork Posole for New Year’s Day and fresh hot
chocolate. Posole is a light stew with Posole, Pork, Onion, garlic, Hatch green chili and spices that they buy straight from New Mexico.
It reminds them of waking up on a cold morning in Colorado, their home state.
What the New Year means for their family: “The new year is a great time to reflect on the things that we did to help other and ourselves,
and to decide what we need to do to improve and grow! It is another day to decide to be our best and to be examples to others. It’s a time
for Gabriel and I to strengthen our marriage and reinforce good habits and mottos to our children: Honor, Courtesy,Integrity, Perseverance,
Self-Control, Courage, Community, Strength, Humility and Knowledge.”
2017 Reflections: This year, the Family went to Port Richey, Clearwater, and Tampa, Florida. Their only plan was to relax and enjoy each other
and the beaches. They went to 8 different beaches in 7 days (yowza!) and they did not stress over agendas or schedules. They enjoyed the
ocean waves, collected shells, walked on the beach, sun tanned, surfed and dug giant holes in the sand. Sounds like pure relaxation!
2018 Predictions: “We as a unit believe that God is always in control. We fully trust that there is good will in all humans. Each morning we pray
for our current leaders to do their best for the American people.”
2018 Plans: “We just sold our house in Katy and are moving to a bigger home that we have been patiently waiting for. The children will will start
at a new school next year and they are excited to make new friends.
We are expanding our Trucking Company and plan to hire another driver.”
Favorite things to do in your area as a family: This family has a mild obsession with Typhoon Texas, visiting the aquatic oasis at least 4-5 times
a week during the summer. Their favorite place to bike ride and fly the drone is Paul D. Rushing park, and Mary Jo Peckham park is their go-to
place to fish and run around the playground. Also, enjoying the green space and shopping at La Centerra is high on their list of favorites. Just
outside the city, this crew loves to head out to Blessington Farm and Dewberry Farms for some good old fashioned country fun, enjoying the
beloved giant slides and corn maze as well as picking berries.
Describe mom and dad‘s ideal date night: On date nights, this parental duo loves to walk at Rice Park, find a place to jam to live music or check
out a movie at Cinemark followed by dessert and a late night coffee.
Family Roster
Mom: Maria Trejos, co-owner Trejos Transport, LLC. Hobbies
include Level 2 brown belt in Taekwondo, taking pictures,
singing, cooking and volunteering for Katy ISD as a
making crafts, jewelry, creating art, shopping and
helping her mom cook. Loves to read books and sew.
Why They Live in Katy
“Katy has been very good to us. At any time during
the day you see your neighbors walking the streets,
the children playing ball and roller skating in the
streets. Our neighbor is always smoking meats and
making our street smell fantastic. We trade food
over our fence! Lol! Families swim in the community
pool and picnic for hours. There is always some kind
of community event for families. It’s amazing.”
HOME FIRES: HOW TO STAY SAFE DURING
COLD WEATHER
It’s that time of year when the cold temperatures settle in and people
turn the heat back on to warm their homes. Heating a home is one
of the leading causes of home fires and the American Red Cross
has steps people can follow to heat their home safely.
ALTERNATE HEAT SOURCES
Almost half of the families in the United States use things like
space heaters, fireplaces, coal or wood stoves to stay warm.
These supplemental heating sources can be dangerous if not used
properly. The Red Cross offers the following safety tips:
1. Never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home.
2. Keep all potential sources of fuel like paper, clothing, bedding,
curtains or rugs at least three feet away from space heaters
and fireplaces.
3. Never leave portable heaters and fireplaces unattended.
4. Turn off space heaters and make sure any embers in the fireplace
are extinguished before going to bed or leaving home.
5. Place space heater on a level, hard and nonflammable surface
(such as ceramic tile floor), not on rugs or carpets or
near bedding or drapes.
6. Keep children and pets away from space heaters.
7. When buying a space heater, look for models that shut off
automatically if the heater falls over as another safety measure.
8. Keep fire in your fireplace by using a glass or metal fire screen
large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs.
9. Have fireplaces, chimneys and furnaces professionally
inspected and cleaned once a year.
10. Other safety steps - Check electrical appliances before you
leave home. Do not leave food cooking on the stove. Blow out
candles before going to bed. Do not overload electrical outlets.
MORE WAYS TO STAY SAFE
Make a fire escape plan and ensure all household members know
two ways to escape from every room of your home. Set up a
Community Newsletter | January 2018
meeting place outside in case of fire. Practice escaping from your
home at least twice a year and at different times of the day. Teach
household members to stop, drop and roll if their clothing should
catch on fire.
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside
bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Check monthly that smoke
alarms are working properly by pushing the test button. Replace
batteries in smoke alarms at least once a year or as directed by
the manufacturer. Replace smoke alarms every ten years.
JANUARY IS
NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH
Blood donors are ordinary people - high school students, factory and
office workers, business executives, parents and grandparents and
people from every walk of life. But they share one thing - a generous
spirit, a desire to give back to their community and help others. Blood
donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern healthcare.
Many lifesaving medical treatments and procedures involve blood
transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable
blood supply.
The Red Cross is also a leader in research and testing to protect the
safety of the blood supply. They were among the first to develop
and implement testing for many infectious diseases including, HIV,
hepatitis B and C viruses, West Nile virus and more recently the agent
of Chagas disease.
If you already donate blood, thank you! You are making a lifesaving
contribution that benefits accident victims, cancer patients, surgical
candidates, children with blood disorders and many others. If you
have never donated blood, please consider doing so. Your donations
are always in constant demand.
The Meaning of
the Martin
Luther King
Holiday
BY CORETTA SCOTT KING
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought
hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught
us through his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity,
humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered
his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love,
forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.
Dr. King knew that it wasn’t enough just to talk the talk, that he had to walk the walk
for his words to be credible. And so we commemorate on this holiday the man of
action, who put his life on the line for freedom and justice every day, the man who
braved threats and jail and beatings and who ultimately paid the highest price to make
democracy a reality for all Americans.
On this day we commemorate Dr. King’s great dream of a vibrant, multiracial nation
united in justice, peace and reconciliation; a nation that has a place at the table for
children of every race and room at the inn for every needy child. It is a day of interracial
and intercultural cooperation and sharing. No other day of the year brings so many
peoples from different cultural backgrounds together in such a vibrant spirit of brother
and sisterhood. Whether you are African-American, Hispanic or Native American,
whether you are Caucasian or Asian-American, you are part of the great dream Martin
Luther King, Jr. had for America. This is not a black holiday; it is a peoples’ holiday.
We commemorate on this holiday the ecumenical leader and visionary who embraced
the unity of all faiths in love and truth. And though we take patriotic pride that Dr.
King was an American, on this holiday we must also commemorate the global leader
who inspired nonviolent liberation movements around the world. Indeed, on this
day, programs commemorating my husband’s birthday are being observed in more
than 100 nations.
The Holiday commemorates America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence - the man
who taught by his example that nonviolent action is the most powerful, revolutionary
force for social change available to oppressed people in their struggles for liberation.
This holiday honors the courage of a man who endured harassment, threats and
beatings and even bombings. We commemorate the man who went to jail 29 times
to achieve freedom for others and who knew he would pay the ultimate price for his
leadership, but kept on marching and protesting and organizing anyway.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and
tribute, but above all a day of service. All across America on the Holiday, his followers
perform service in hospitals and shelters and prisons and wherever people need some
help. It is a day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those
who can’t read, mentoring at-risk youngsters, consoling the broken-hearted and a
thousand other projects for building the beloved community of his dream.
We call you to commemorate this Holiday by making your personal commitment
to serve humanity with the vibrant spirit of unconditional love that was his greatest
strength and which empowered all of the great victories of his leadership. And with
our hearts open to this spirit of unconditional love, we can indeed achieve the Beloved
Community of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than
from lack of food.
• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.
• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms.
• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt.
Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks.
Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time
for settling before planting.
• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give
strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant.
Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in.
• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to
crown.
• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open
pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias.
• Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture.
• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray
for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚
for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying.
• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in
mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove
too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell,
but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of
similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant.
• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To
prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds.
Complete preparation of new beds for roses.
• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both
evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of
foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider
dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not
work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.
• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus,
including rotted manure.
• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water.
Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with
dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.
A one-room schoolhouse was built in 1898 where children could
learn, grow and develop. Little did the visionaries know that their
small town would blossom into a thriving community of more than
17,000 people. The current Katy Elementary campus was built in
1965, renovated in 1989 and again in 1995. Today, students play on
the same location as the original playground and the first schoolhouse
bell hangs in the main entrance of the current campus.
“Today’s paw prints are tomorrow’s legacy,” said Superintendent
Lance Hindt during the ceremony where past generations of students
and staff members were present. Among those in the crowd
was 92-year-old Melvin Jordan who recalls riding on horseback
with his brothers to and from school as a first grader. Currently,
there are 11 students attending Katy Elementary who are 5 th and
6 th generation members of the original class of Katy Tigers!
VOTERS APPROVE KATY ISD $609.2 MM REFERENDUM
In November, voters approved the Katy Independent School District’s
2017 bond, which will provide relief to campuses managing
a rapidly growing student population, along with renovations and
improvements for 61 campuses. According to unofficial results, the
$609.2 MM bond passed by an approximate 65% voter approval.
KATY ELEMENTARY RECEIVES HISTORICAL MARKER AS
FIRST SCHOOLHOUSE IN KATY, TX
As residents drive by Katy Elementary, a bright blue historical marker
now sits on the campus at the same spot where the first City of
Katy schoolhouse was built 119 years ago. On Friday, November 10 th ,
the Harris County Historical Society honored the founding fathers
by granting a historical marker to the city’s first public school.
“Katy ISD is the second fastest growing school district in the state
of Texas,” said Superintendent Lance Hindt. “Families continue to
move to Katy because of the quality learning opportunities our
teachers and staff provide to each and every student. This bond
will help to ensure that our community’s expectations for high
educational standards and schools are maintained now and well
into the future.”
The District’s 2017 bond comes with a zero tax rate increase and is
designed to address fast growth and aging facilities. It includes six
new schools, one comprehensive renovation, along with repairs
and upgrades to 61 campuses. Bond funds will also provide many
campuses with safety and security improvements and school
expansions at Raines High School and Katy High School’s Career
and Technical Education program (CTE). Technology and infrastructure
upgrades are also included for all Katy ISD schools, as
well as replacement of aging buses and portables and fuel storage
tanks. Ninety-one percent (91%) of bond funds will directly impact
campuses and student learning.
SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE PRESENTS
“EAT YOUR HEART OUT”
Charlie is an out of work actor currently working as a waiter. The
another place. The action’s uninterrupted and the comedy
never stops. There is a variety of hilarious characters including a girl
desperately trying to eat snails and oysters to please her fiancé, the
middle-aged lovers so intent on each other that they cannot order
dinner; the rich, embittered astrologer; the timid man who never
gets a waiter; the agents, directors, actors and waiters. An amusing
gallery of characters whose stories intertwine and finally involve
Charlie. The performance will be held at Seven Lakes High School
BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND
OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor
for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds
tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding
volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second
Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize
and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques,
understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors
do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal
teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout
the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during
the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life
by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181
or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives
Through Literacy!”
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program
called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended
for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone
and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call
each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses
a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have
Community Newsletter | January 2018
to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or
leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe
and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the
computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is
still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police.
They will have with them a print out of information on the person
that is not responding to the calls. This program was established
by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt
(FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police
chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will
proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To
request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial
program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.
COMMUNITY HEROES
VOLUNTEER TO BE AN EVERYDAY HERO
Volunteer firefighting is one of the
most rewarding experiences you’ll ever
have. Community VFD offers free fire
training and volunteering is a great
way to make a difference personally
while having a positive impact in your
community. Volunteers can fight fires,
drive apparatuses, extract patients from vehicles at accident
scenes, etc.
Community VFD also provides emergency medical services (EMS)
and provides opportunities for individuals with a Texas EMS
certification to serve their community.
or email Chief Steve Fowler at sfowler@communityvfd.com.
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If
your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash.
Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It
may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show
your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for
rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an
owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a
leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with
your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community
EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal
roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control
at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful
approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely
retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is
your best and safest option.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol
and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated
as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your
dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort
to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your
dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your
family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it
was ‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground
without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their
property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and
free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property
where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at
increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement
of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s
efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification,
should that animal become lost. Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the
animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats
because they are an important control measure for the public health
threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations
provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
