OUTDOOR LIFE
Stevens Point
When Stevens Point was founded in 1858, this was
a community of loggers, fur traders and brewers.
The community is still known for its outstanding
beer and so much more: companies such as
Delta Dental, Sentry Insurance, Travel Guard
and Herrschners all call this place home. The
University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point is one of
the community’s treasures. The 400-acre campus
includes Schmeeckle Reserve, the Wisconsin
Conservation Hall of Fame, the Museum of Natural
History, the Carlsten Art Gallery and the Allen F.
Blocher Planetarium.
Plover
Just south of Stevens Point on the east shore of
the Wisconsin River is the Village of Plover. This
charming community is conveniently located at
the crossroads of I-39 and is home to a variety of
retailers and businesses, including O’so Brewing
Company and Great Northern Distilling. The village
also has many great parks and the Korean War
Memorial of Wisconsin at Lake Pacawa.
Amherst
On the banks of the Tomorrow River, you’ll
find the Village of Amherst, a quiet but thriving
community with a very strong sense of place.
Amherst is home to the Tomorrow River State
Trail, Lettie W. Jensen Community Center and
Central Waters Brewing Company.
Other Gems
The countryside is dotted with small communities
like Junction City, Almond, Bancroft, Rosholt,
Nelsonville, Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst
Junction. The rural Lake DuBay area in northwestern
Portage County offers many recreational
opportunities and encompasses most of the
townships of Eau Pleine, Hull and Dewey.
Fun Facts
The Stevens Point Brewery is one of the oldest
continually operating breweries in the nation.
It was founded in 1857 and once provided beer
to soldiers in the American Civil War. The brewery
survived Prohibition and today it makes a variety
of delicious award-winning beers.
