Vilas County is home to one of the largest collections of freshwater lakes in the world, with more than 1,300 beautiful

lakes and 73 rivers and streams. There are large lake chains with miles of shoreline to explore and backcountry waters that

haven’t even been named. You can see details on our largest lakes on pages 11-14, including GPS coordinates, what you’ll

fi nd there, public access information, and the size and depth of each lake.

But there are some things that can’t be charted or graphed, like the wonder of seeing the Milky Way from the end of a dock

or how it feels to sit with someone special on the shore and watch the sun dip below the trees. Find your own moment—and

your new favorite lake in Vilas County.

GET ON THE WATER

Vilas County’s lakes have lured people to the Northwoods

LAKE CHAINS

Vilas County’s famous lake chains offer boaters an

opportunity to explore a few lakes—or more than a dozen—

in a single outing. Here’s a quick guide to some of the best.

EAGLE RIVER CHAIN

One of the most well-known chains in the Northwoods

is the Eagle River Chain of Lakes. In fact, it’s the largest

freshwater chain of lakes in the world. It connects with the

Three Lakes Chain to the south, so boaters have a total of

28 lakes to explore. The Eagle River portion of the chain

includes 10 lakes covering 3,600 acres, including small

waters like the 31-acre Lynx Lake and expansive lakes like

the nearly 1,000-acre Catfish Lake.

CISCO CHAIN

In far northern Vilas County, the Cisco Chain takes boaters

into Michigan waters. With 15 lakes and 270 miles of

shoreline, it’s a chain of substantial size. Big Lake, West Bay

and Mamie Lake extend into Vilas County and connect with

Cisco and Thousand Island lakes to the north.

LAC DU FLAMBEAU CHAIN

This spring-fed 10-lake chain is known for its abundant fish

and clear water. It’s anchored by Fence Lake, a clear, 3,483-

acre lake containing musky, panfish, smallmouth bass,

northern pike and walleye. There are many places to get

on the water, and one of the chain’s lakes, Long Interlaken,

borders downtown Lac du Flambeau.

MANITOWISH WATERS CHAIN

In Manitowish Waters, you’ll fi nd a 10-lake chain with some

great fi shing and an interesting history. The chain includes

Rest Lake, Stone Lake, Fawn Lake, Clear Lake, Little Star

Lake, Island Lake, Alder Lake, Spider Lake, Wild Rice Lake

and Manitowish Lake. The lake that helped the chain gain

fame is Little Star Lake, home to Little Bohemia Lodge, site

of a 1934 shootout between John Dillinger and the FBI.

LAKE LOUNGING

FISHING

Vilas County boasts some of the best fishing for smallmouth

bass, walleye and musky in North America. With 1,300 lakes

and 73 rivers and streams, there are nearly limitless places

to cast a line. We have big lakes with plenty of open water

and small lakes that are rarely fished. Want to make the most

of your next fishing trip? Here are some answers to a few

common questions.

WHERE SHOULD I FISH? You can barely drive a country mile

in Vilas County without passing a decent fishing lake. Our

lake grid (pages 11-14) details waters with public access

that will help you find beautiful fishing waters. The grid

includes species of fish, the size and depth of each lake and

boat launch details, along with GPS coordinates.

WHAT FISHING EVENTS ARE COMING UP? We have

tournaments year-round for competitive anglers, seminars

for amateurs who want to learn more and special events for

kids. See Fishing Events on page 34.

DO I NEED A BOAT? No! There are endless places to enjoy

shore fi shing. Check out Upper Gresham Lake in Boulder

Junction, Rest Lake in Manitowish Waters, Star Lake in

Sayner-Star Lake, Silver Lake in Eagle River and several

locations in Presque Isle, including Horsehead Lake, Little

Horsehead Lake and Oxbow Lake.

HOW CAN I BE SURE TO LAND A BIG FISH? There are no

guarantees in life, but your chances of success will improve

drastically if you hire a fishing guide. Guides can share

lessons you’ll use for a lifetime, plus, they’re a bargain when

you factor in the great value of being able to use their boat

and equipment.

10 FISHING

BASS FISHING ON LITTLE ST. GERMAIN LAKE

Dawn B. | St. Germain

A very happy fisherman, catching a bass on Little St. Germain Lake!

Record haul

Anglers have landed some state records on Vilas

County’s lakes. There was the 54-inch tiger musky

caught on Lac Vieux Desert in 1919, and the 29-

inch silver redhorse caught in Plum Creek in 1985.

There was the 18-pound walleye landed on High Lake

in 1933 and the 4.3-inch mottled sculpin (they are

small!) captured in Gunlock Lake in 2016. Records are

meant to be broken, and they just might be broken here

again—cast a line and try your luck.

Here are some possibilities for spring adventure.

•Explore the 1.5 million-acre Chequamegon-Nicolet

National Forest 1 via the Anvil Lake Trail, just east of

Eagle River.

Lakeshore hikes in Vilas County

Some of the most unforgettable hikes take place where

land meets water—with more than 1,300 lakes in Vilas

County, there are numerous forest trails that trace the

water’s edge. There’s perhaps no better way to enjoy

summer than to walk along a Northwoods lake. Here are a

few of our favorite lakeside hikes.

STAR LAKE NATURE TRAIL – SAYNER-STAR LAKE

This beautiful trail will take you onto a peninsula that juts

out into Star Lake. The trail crosses some picturesque

stretches of boardwalk, but you’ll find some of the most

scenic views at the water’s edge.

SPECTACLE LAKE-KENTUCK LAKE TRAIL – PHELPS

This scenic trail travels through a colorful deciduous forest

between two campgrounds. In the warmer months, enjoy the

swimming beach area at Spectacle Lake. If the water is a little

cool for swimming, it’s still worth a visit—the view is beautiful.

LUMBERJACK TRAIL – BOULDER JUNCTION

This 12-mile trail skirts the edge of White Sand Lake, and

two loops will take you into the wilderness. Stretches of

the trail also follow sides of the Manitowish River and

White Sand Creek.

SHANNON LAKE TRAIL – ST. GERMAIN

This trail system will take you through a variety of beautiful

stands of northern hardwoods, but one of the most scenic

stretches is a loop around Shannon Lake.

CATHERINE WOLTER WILDERNESS AREA –

PRESQUE ISLE

This pristine wilderness area is laced with trails that will

take you past undeveloped waters like Knife Lake, Canteen

Lake and John Lake. Loops of various lengths are possible,

so you can find a hike that’s perfect for you.

ADVENTURE: FALL

The arrival of fall in Vilas County is always breathtaking. This

is the season of fall color drives, scenic hikes, fall festivals

and evenings by the fire with friends and family. The season

passes quickly—peak colors arrive in late September/early

October, but travel outside of peak time rewards visitors with

late season serenity and a great opportunity to view birds

and wildlife.

There’s nothing like a relaxing drive down one of Vilas

County’s tranquil roads. Here are some good bets for

breathtaking fall color.

Rustic Road 60. 10 Enjoy a tranquil 12-mile route that

will take you through the heart of the Northern Highland-

American Legion State Forest. It runs from Cty. Rd. K

south of Boulder Junction to Cty. Rd. M in Sayner-

Star Lake. You’ll drive past former logging camps,

hiking trails and an old saw mill.

Presque Isle to Land O’ Lakes. The drive is about 30

miles, and it passes through some beautiful fall scenery

that’s largely devoid of power lines. It’s an easy route

to follow; just stay on Cty. Hwy. B. Heading east out of

Presque Isle, you’ll pass the turnoff for the Catherine

Wolter Wilderness Area, a 2,189-acre site that’s a great

place for a fall hike.

Land O’ Lakes to Eagle River (via Phelps). A nice fall

driving route will take you through eastern Vilas County.

Take Hwy. 45 until you hit Cty. Hwy. E, where you’ll head

east to Phelps. From Phelps, meander southwest on

Hwy. 17 past North Twin Lake and continue south on

Hwy. 45 into Eagle River.

Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway. This scenic 145-mile

route will take you through the beauty of Vilas, Oneida,

Forest and Langlade counties. Experience the amazing

diversity of wildlife, trails and outdoor activities in the

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Surround yourself

with the breathtaking colors in the fall. Order a

Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway map at vilas.org.

activity can be enjoyed from July to early October in

Manitowish Waters and Eagle River.

•View impressive flocks of migratory birds at Powell

•Join the fun at a fall festival. You’ll find them in most

communities, including Colorama events in Land O’

Lakes and Sayner, just to name a few.

encounter dramatic “boulder gardens” along the way.

a horse, check out the Torch Lake Trails and the Ski Hill

ADVENTURE: WINTER

Every winter, Vilas County is covered with fresh, beautiful

snow. Located in the Lake Superior snowbelt, Vilas County

receives on average about 6 feet of snow each winter!

That means this is the perfect place for snowmobiling,

snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or just enjoying winter

beauty. Here are some of our favorite winter adventures.

Trails, located between Winchester and Manitowish

Waters. You’ll find great winter fat biking and crosscountry

skiing opportunities.

•Snowshoe with giants—the Van Vliet Hemlocks 12

400-year-old trees.

•Go ice fishing. You’ve got more than 1,300 frozen

lakes to choose from! Need somewhere to start?

Anglers traditionally have good luck on Stormy Lake near

Conover.

•Head to snowmobiling heaven. Eagle River is a

snowmobiler’s mecca, home of the annual Vintage World

and World Championship Snowmobile derbies at the

historic Derby Track. The Sno-Eagles offer weekly

guided tours (see page 35).

•Who let the dogs out? Find out in Land O’ Lakes, which

hosts the Three Bear Sled Dog Races each winter.

Minocqua also hosts the Winter Park Bark Skijor Race,

a unique race where cross-country skiiers are pulled by

energetic dogs.

•Glide over ice. You’ll find lots of great ice skating spots,

including Community Park in Conover.

SHOPPING & DINING

SHOPPING

Vilas County is a beautiful place to find unique items for

family, friends and anyone else on your list. Here’s a sample

of what you can discover.

OUTDOOR GEAR: Vilas County has lots of great sporting

goods shops selling the latest gear at competitive prices. One

of the best parts about shopping at these stores is the deep

knowledge employees and owners of these retailers have

about what they are selling—when they’re not in the store,

you’ll probably find them on the lake or in the woods. If you’re

not sure what you’re looking for, they’re there to help. One

shop in downtown Eagle River will even outfi t your dog!

ARTIST WARES: The Northwoods’ natural beauty has long

inspired some of Wisconsin’s most beloved artists and

craftspeople. You can fi nd their work, and the work of other

regional and national talents, in Vilas County’s shops and

galleries. You’ll never have more fun finding the perfect gift

or home décor item.

SWEET AND SAVORY: Vilas County shops sell a delicious

variety of jams, jellies and other sweet delights. You’ll also

fi nd handcrafted salsas, hot chocolate mixes, sauces and

an abundance of cranberry and wild rice products that are

native to this area. These items are all delicious, and many

are not available elsewhere. Treat yourself!

NORTHWOODS APPAREL: Our county’s retailers are stocked

with all the apparel you’ll need to get through the frostiest

mornings and warmest summer afternoons. We even have

specialty boutiques where you can find one-of-a-kind fashions.

Learn more about shopping at vilaswi.com/shopping-services.

20 SHOPPING & DINING

DINING

You’ll fi nd them in the heart of our communities and on back

forest roads—Vilas County restaurants serve up flavors

as big as the Northwoods. These restaurants are timeless

treasures, as delicious as they were generations ago. Here’s

a taste of what you’ll fi nd.

SUPPER CLUBS: Arrive early and savor your experience at a

Vilas County supper club. These places are institutions,

celebrated by visitors and locals alike, and are decorated

with trophy fi sh, old photos and perhaps even a few

Christmas lights. Order a classic old fashioned—sweet or

sour, fruit or olives—the choice is yours. Savor a traditional

Wisconsin fish fry, order up a rack of ribs or some

impossibly tender prime rib. Save room for the perfect

throwback dessert: an ice cream drink!

TAVERNS: For great flavors and friendly atmosphere, head

to a Vilas County tavern. You’ll fi nd burgers loaded with

deliciousness and fried cheese curds and homemade chips

that can’t be resisted. There’s always something cold and

refreshing on tap. Planning a summer getaway? Many of our

taverns have outside seating during the warmer months.

FAMILY RESTAURANTS: Anyone hungry for pizza? Vilas

County restaurants serve up some of the best pizza in the

Northwoods, as well as entrees to fit anyone’s taste and

budget. After a day on the lakes or trails, there’s nothing like

settling into a Northwoods restaurant, where the portions are

as generous as the service. The only question: table or booth?
