CARDS FOR GOOD CAUSES
BUMPER CHRISTMAS
Nicholas Howell, manager of the
Cards for Good Causes shop in
Uckfield, contacted Uckfield Matters
to say: “We have had years of
setting up our shop in a number of
different empty run-down shops,
so Bridge Cottage is a dream come
true!
“Despite the shop being in a new
place it achieved some really good
sales for the charities who receive
more than 70p in the pound from
the sales of the Christmas cards.
“The Cards For Good Causes shop
also brought in many people who
are interested in Bridge Cottage
itself so I am pleased that the
article helped promote it as well.
And what a fantastic venue it is for
NEW YEAR TO BRING FRESH
OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG
PEOPLE IN EAST SUSSEX
The New Year will bring fresh
opportunities for young people
looking to take up apprenticeships
with East Sussex County Council.
With 54 apprentices having started
work with the local authority and
its highways contractor, council
bosses are keen to continue their
drive to help young people get
onto the career ladder.
Since launching its apprenticeship
programme at the end of 2015,
East Sussex County Council has
given young people the chance to
learn about apprenticeships and
gain work experience with the
organisation.
Through a work readiness
programmes run by the council,
103 young people who were not in
work, education or training could
find out if apprenticeships were
right for them and gain valuable
work skills.
As well as apprenticeships
in a variety of county council
departments, opportunities have
been made available with the
authority’s highways contractor
Costain CH2M – including nine civil
engineering apprenticeships.
UCKFIELD VOLUNTEER CENTRE
EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE ‘CELEBRATE’ -
THE BIG EVENT OF 2017
By Sophie Whelpton
This is an exciting year for The Uckfield Volunteer Centre as we have been awarded a grant from The
Big Lottery to work on a project which will culminate in an exciting event in September called Celebrate.
This project will bring together many local groups,
charities and organisations in celebrating all things
volunteering in 2017 and beyond. The main event will
be held in September in the Civic Centre in Uckfield
in both the Weald Hall and The Ashdown Room. The
Weald Hall will be the setting for an ‘Expo’ of local
groups and charities who rely on volunteers and
the Ashdown Room will house a day of interactive
events in which the public can join in to experience
volunteering first hand.
We are excited to be launching the whole project
on the 16th March at the Civic Centre where we will
be showcasing the type of activities volunteers can
do. We will also be presenting speakers from both
organisations and volunteers who will be talking about
their own experiences in this field. In addition we are
very pleased to be joined by Lembit Opik who will
be our guest speaker. The event will be covered live
by Uckfield FM and we will be inviting a whole host
of wonderful local people and organisations - we’re
excited to have this opportunity to shout from the
rooftops to celebrate volunteering.
If you’re interested in volunteering, we have a whole
host of volunteering opportunities - from a set couple
of hours a week perhaps driving an elderly person to
an appointment or working in a charity shop to a one
off afternoon helping at
a lunch or tea party.
IF you’d like to see the
sort of activities where
you could really make
a difference, check out
the Do-It website
https://do-it.org/ where
you can volunteer for
people and causes that
matter to you.
Call us on 01825 760019 or email
uckfieldvolunteer@gmail.com – we’re open
Monday to Friday 10 – 1pm, Tues/Wed/Thurs til
4pm - we would love to hear from you.
We like to see litter free pavements as we walk around our town.
We enjoy the company of those we work with each Sunday morning and enjoyed our Christmas meal
together at the Ringles Cross.
We feel the benefit of all our outdoor exercise.
We get great job satisfaction seeing the before and after look when we have sorted out a messy spot.
We enjoy the variety of tasks, as well as litter-picking, we do planting and gardening jobs. We choose
which of these we want to be involved in.
We feel safe, supported and valued in ‘What we do’. We use Brighter Uckfield litter pickers, bags, high-viz
jackets, gloves and garden tools. We are covered by our insurance and we are encouraged and thanked
by many Uckfield residents.
We enjoy working with other groups from Uckfield clubs, businesses and residents’ associations.
We appreciate the financial support we receive from Uckfield Town Council, Uckfield Carnival and Bonfire
Society, Waitrose green token scheme and individuals.
We appreciate the many contributions from local businesses who give us reduced prices on what we
purchase or give us their services free.
We know that a clean town encourages more shoppers, more visitors and less anti-social behaviour.
Put a note in your diary for the weekend 3rd March to 5th March, 2017 when it is the national ‘Clean for
news in brief
CUT BACK HEDGES AND TREES
AND PROTECT THE PUBLIC
Land and property owners in East
Sussex are being urged to protect
the public by cutting back trees
and hedges which overhang the
public highway.
East Sussex County Council
is warning that overhanging
vegetation causes a danger to road
users – in particular high-sided
vehicles such as buses or HGVs
– and can block light from street
lamps.
Meanwhile, vegetation which
obstructs pavements also puts
pedestrians at risk, including
disabled people and parents with
push chairs, who may be forced
into the road.
The council is reminding
landowners – including
householders, business owners
and farmers – that it’s their
responsibility to have their trees
regularly inspected and to cut back
trees or hedges which overhang
roads or pavements.
Property owners are advised to
ensure the pavement bordering
their land is clear of vegetation to a
height of 8ft (2.5m) and the road is
clear to 17ft (5.1m).
If made aware of any problems
caused by overhanging vegetation,
East Sussex Highways can write to
the landowner asking them to cut
it back.
If no action is taken, Highways
may use its own staff to cut back
the tree or hedge and bill the
landowner.
People can report overhanging
vegetation which is obstructing
the road online at www.
eastsussexhighways.com
LOCAL SINGING ARTIST RAG
NOMINATION FOR BRITS
Award live on the ITV show ‘The
Brits are Coming’ on Saturday.
He also learned during the live
show that he was also nominated
in the British Breakthrough act
category.
2016 was a big year for Rory, as
his track ‘Human’ has been No 1
in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium
and Austria. He also topped the
Official Chart’s Trending List for
two weeks and reached No.2 in the
The Brit Awards take place on
UCKFIELD TOWN COUNCIL TO
THE RESCUE
The ground staff of Uckfield Town
Council were busy after heavy rain,
snow and ice hit the town at the
beginning of January.
They were spotted in various parts
of the town gritting and on West
Park clearing a blocked culvert
which belongs to Wealden Council.
Uckfield Town Clerk, Holly Goring
said: “A big thank you to our
Grounds staff who were out early
this morning whilst we made our
way to work and school, gritting
entrances to the parks, local
schools and the Town Council’s
facilities such as the Civic Centre”
“This was followed by clearing one
of the Town’s drainage culverts
near Batchelor Way to reduce
any risk of potential flooding from
heavy rain.”
continued budgetary pressures
the council is facing, we are not
able to continue funding the youth
club, which closed at the end of
December.
“As a council we are having to
focus our increasingly limited
resources on the areas of greatest
need, and in terms of youth
services, this means young people
and families who need additional
help and support.
“We are currently talking to a
partner organisation about the
possibility of them taking over
the running of the building and
continuing to offer space for
community use.”
The building was regularly used by
the youth club and still is currently
by the Uckfield.
Local group Uckfield PHAB, use
the building to run their group
and support their over 100 person
membership.
Janine Williams Chair and Trustee
of Uckfield PHAB told Uckfield FM:-
‘We have been at the youth club
for ten years. I could not even
contemplate where we would go
and I don’t want to think about it’.
2016 IN REVIEW
October saw the very first Dawson Hart
Fright Night held at the Cinque Ports
Club. Over £825 was raised in one night,
with some incredible raffle prizes on offer
- every year local businesses in Uckfield
never fail to provide fantastic prizes and
we are so grateful.
2016 was undoubtedly a mixed bag of
emotions. From historic political surprises
like Brexit and President-elect Donald
Trump; the loss of several superstars;
the end of Brangelina (or was that one
inevitable?), to celebrating the Queen’s
90th birthday; Tim Peake’s successful
return to Earth and Ramsey Bolton
getting what he deserved (Game of
Thrones fans will agree with this one!).
For Dawson Hart, 2016 has been
a successful year. Once again we
maintained our Law Society accreditation
for excellence in client care. This is
important to us as it means that current
and prospective clients can be assured
that we are consistently delivering
services that meet and exceed client
expectations. With that in mind, we
are also incredibly proud to have been
shortlisted for the Law Society’s Awards
for Excellence in Client Service. Whilst
we did not win the category, to have
been shortlisted on a national level is a
fantastic achievement.
2016 also saw the third Uckfield Business
Awards take place, in which Jacqueline
Hardaway, our Managing Director, won
Female Business Person of the Year. The
staff at Dawson Hart feel that Jacqueline
has helped them achieve their goals and
clients tell us that she goes the extra mile
to provide the very best in legal services.
Back in December 2015, our staff and
contacts voted Chestnut Tree House
as our Charity of the Year for 2016. We
started off our fundraising with our
Easter Egg Hunt in April. Over 200 visitors
helped us raise just under £1,300 in 4
short hours. The sun shone for us and the
children made the most of the woodland
Easter Egg hunt. Even the Easter Bunny
made an appearance!
In May, a team of Dawson Hart ladies
took part in Chestnut Tree’s ‘Night to
Remember’ walk in Eastbourne. An array
of glow sticks, flashing lights and funky
costumes helped spur on the walkers –
although we suspect that the ‘Chocolate
Station’ was also a great incentive!
More recently at our annual Christmas
drinks party, we announced that our
Charity of the Year 2017 would be St
Wilfrid’s Hospice. Staff at Dawson Hart
chose St Wilfrid’s as one of our Directors’
father, Kevan Regan, was looked after at
the hospice before he passed away in
September. Mr Regan was the co-founder
of the hospice in 1981 and we are
supporting St Wilfrid’s as a tribute to him.
Whilst Dawson Hart have achieved
a great deal in 2016, we were also
extremely sad to lose two of our team to
retirement – David Marshall, our senior
partner, and Jan Newman, assistant to
Jacqueline Hardaway. David had been
with Dawson Hart for over 37 years and
was well-known within our community.
Both David and Jan will definitely be
missed.
With that said, 2016 has certainly been
eventful for Dawson Hart to say the least,
and we are very much looking forward
to what 2017 will bring; including
continuing our sponsorship of Uckfield
RFC, Beacon Curling Club and Hastings
Seagulls Swimming Club.
UCKFIELD FAIRTRADE GROUP
SUPPORTS ‘LET IT GROW’ CAMPAIGN
By Jeremy Hallett
Uckfield Fairtrade Group are giving their £500 of profit to Traidcraft’s new ‘Let It Grow’ campaign.
‘Let It Grow’ helps smallholder farmers in some of
the world’s poorest countries develop their farming
skills and build businesses that help them trade
their way out of poverty. Many of these farmers are
women who often live in social isolation with every
day bringing a fresh struggle to find enough food for
themselves and their families.
One farmer is Suvidha Jani, who lives in rural Odisha,
Eastern India, one of the poorest places in the world,
where the majority of people live in extreme poverty.
Before working with Traidcraft, Suvidha would make
a living foraging in the forest, gathering leaves and
berries to sell on to local villagers, earning little more
than a few rupees for hours of gruelling work.
Now, after working with Traidcraft, Suvidha has turned
her life around completely. Since joining an organic
cotton farming project funded by Traidcraft she has
been taught better farming techniques, allowing
her to improve the quality of her crop and achieve a
better price.
Our profit comes from:
Coffee mornings on the first Saturday of each month
at the Source (10-12am) give a chance to buy some of
the many food and drink items that are also important
in allowing farmers to plan their crops whilst hoping to
make a living when it’s sold and an annual “Fairtrade
Feast” which is a large and popular Sunday lunch and
is on February 26th. It includes local and Fairtrade
ingredients and costs just £8, with good company
thrown in for free!
Other than fundraising do we do anything else?
We’ve been to the Houses of Parliament for an All
Party Parliamentary Group meeting as Uckfield’s
got a pretty keen little team so were asked to by the
national Fairtrade Foundation. We also help people
become aware of how caring for others through
buying Fairtrade products isn’t just giving money
it’s giving a chance for people to make a life for
themselves at events like the Big Day Out and the
Weald and the Field. If anyone wants information
The Uckfield Voice
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
I’d like to wish all of our residents, local businesses and
customers a Happy New Year!
Looking back, 2016 was a year full of activity.
We saw the town come together during the
transformation of the High Street to promote that
Uckfield was open for business and celebrate the
wide ranging facilities available within the town.
© Ron Hill
During the year Uckfield surpassed itself with a
calendar of fantastic events, including the Queen’s
Birthday Celebrations, Uckfield Festival, Weald and
the Field, Uckfield Carnival and Torch Procession
and Holy Cross Church Christmas Tree Festival, to
name just a few!
The amount of work carried out by our voluntary
and community groups to raise money for charity,
support those in need and provide local residents
with regular support and entertainment was truly
commendable. Thank you for your hard work –
Uckfield’s community spirit makes this such a great
place to live and work!
Looking forward, we are excited about the year
ahead. The Town Council has been busy setting
its Vision ‘Preserving heritage, providing for the
future’ within its Strategic Plan (2017-2022) and has
identified a list of priorities for 2017/18, including a
number of new initiatives. You can view the annual
priorities in this month’s edition of the Voice.
Town Mayor
Cllr Louise Eastwood
2017 is about improving communication and
strengthening our partnerships to help us achieve
results for the town.
We look forward to the year ahead and to working
with you!
21

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2017/18
Each year, the Town Council is required to review its priorities and set its budget (precept) for
the following financial year. The budget needs to take account of general running costs of Town
Council services, maintenance of facilities, and new initiatives which have been identified for
delivery.
On 9th January 2017, Uckfield Town Council set its precept for 2017/18. Wealden District
Council is responsible for collecting your Council Tax which is spent on a wide range of
services delivered by your County, District and Town Councils, the Sussex Police and Crime
Commissioner and the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Authority.
SO, WHAT’S PLANNED?
Uckfield Town Council is planning a productive year ahead and has put together a list of
priorities for delivery. It will be working closely with its partner agencies (including the County
Council, District Council and Sussex Police) to bring about these positive improvements. The
Town Council remains focused on ensuring Uckfield remains a great place to live and work!
1. Support local groups and charities
through the provision of community grant
funding.
© Ron Hill
2. Support initiatives within the town to
encourage good health and wellbeing
amongst our residents.
3. Work with local businesses and
organisations to create a Dementia
Friendly town, starting with the creation of
an Uckfield Forum.
© Ron Hill
4. Increase signposting of existing facilities and
explore the provision of additional public
conveniences.
5. Support an increase in the provision of
events and activities for the town.
6. Continue to implement the Town Council’s
litter bin policy.
7. Work with our partner agencies to lobby for
a reduction in the amount of litter on public
highways.
8. Implement improvements to the operation of
CCTV in Uckfield Town Centre.
22 22

9. Work with our partner agencies to continue
to educate school pupils about road safety.
10. Work with partner agencies to identify
further improvements to accessibility and
safety on our pavements and highways.
11. Promote the town’s green spaces and
allotments to encourage greater leisure
and recreation.
12. Improve communication and engagement
with residents through increased use of
noticeboards and social media.
13. Increase communication with local
community groups to enable greater
sharing of information and support.
14. Strengthen partnership opportunities with
local service providers to ensure delivery
of good quality services to our residents.
THE KINGS OF ROCK N ROLL
AT THE CIVIC CENTRE
by Cllr Ian Smith
A full house audience in the Civic Centre Weald Hall had a
rocking-good evening of 1950’s and 1960’s music on Friday
2nd December. They were entertained by “tribute” artists performing
hit songs by Billy Fury (Gavin Stanley), Buddy Holly (Marc Robinson)
and Elvis Presley (Steve Halliday).
Together with a fantastic live backing band
they faithfully reproduced the sounds and
ensured they dressed and looked like the
real thing. The audience sang along to the
many familiar songs, and some made it to
the front of the hall to jump and jive. We
were very lucky to get three different acts
on the one evening.
The show looked and sounded great as
a result of the new lighting, sound and
acoustic systems that have been installed
as part of the Uckfield Town Council’s
investment in our Civic Centre.
Elvis Presley is returning, with his own backing band, to the Weald Hall on Saturday 6 May. His act was
very popular and it could well be a sell-out concert again.
Make sure you book your tickets early!
GREAT THINGS TO
LOOK FORWARD TO !
by Cllr Donna French
The team that brought you many fantastic events during the 'Uckfield is Open'
campaign in 2016 have reformed! The new events working group will be
putting all our efforts into repeating the two most popular events from last
year, and we plan to make them bigger and better!
On Saturday 5th August we will be hosting 'Weald
on the Field'. This popular event will again
showcase local produce (food and crafts) and
celebrate with live music on Luxford Field. We
aim to extend the entertainment into the evening
as that is what you've asked for!
On Saturday 7th October we will hold another
vintage/classic car show. Almost 100 vehicles
joined the Revival Parade last year and we hope to
have at least as many again. This will culminate in
a display of vehicles on Luxford Field and we aim
to add extra car related stalls and activities.
Further details of both days will follow, but in the
meantime if you'd like to register your interest in
either event, or if you would like to offer help or
sponsorship, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Exciting times ahead!
“Understanding what
the individual can and
cannot do is vital to the
success of any activity”

ART THERAPY
The wellbeing benefits
of creative expression
Arts and crafts have long been used for therapeutic reasons; the creative process of art is, in itself,
therapeutic, but they are also accessible – anyone can be creative in some way or another!
Art therapy can be used in the very young –
it’s especially beneficial to children, who are
often less capable than expressing themselves
through words. But it can also be really helpful
to adults and benefit those living with a range
of disabilities and illnesses. By expressing
themselves through art and craft, people taking
part in art therapy have found that it can help to
alleviate various mental and physical symptoms,
particularly anxiety and tension.
Art therapy can also benefit people who struggle
with social situations – it can help those who
are shy, or struggle in a social setting for any
number of reasons.
Using art to help those with dementia
One area where art therapies are increasingly used
is for people living with dementia. Margaret Dode-
Angel, who runs Sussex Support Services in Uckfield
and supports people with dementia and Parkinsons
disease, says: “Arts enable people with dementia to
express themselves in a way they may no longer be
able to through speech, thinking and everyday tasks.
They may revive a familiar hobby or interest and can
facilitate learning of a new skill.
“The satisfaction upon completion of something
one has created cannot be underestimated, nor
can the sense of achievement at the response and
recognition of others towards a piece of work.”
People with dementia can realise a number of
benefits from arts therapies:
• Hand dexterity and coordination can improve
• It facilitates decision making
• The imagination is stimulated, which facilitates
communication, reminiscence and orientation
• Activities such as colouring are calming and
relaxing – as well as being useful for maintaining
fine motor skills
• Sights, touch, sounds and smells used in arts
can bring back happy memories
• Not least, the person can continue, through the
arts, to live life to the full and have fun
Margaret says, ‘”the sorts of activities that we run
include flower arranging, colouring, painting, card
making, collages, mosaics, modelling air dry clay,
crafts for different occasions like Christmas and
Easter. During activities we have lots of chatting,
laughing and reminiscing. We’ve also had students
from UCTC come in to do workshops with the service
users as well, which benefits everyone involved.”
is possibly the easiest and most beneficial activity
to do at home without mess. If you are buying
for someone, make sure they’ve got a selection
of colouring tools, pens, pencils which will enable
variation. With the number of adult colouring books
now available in shops you will be able to find easily
pictures that would appeal to the individual living
with dementia.
Art therapy in a supported environment
“As every person is different everyone’s dementia
journey is different,” says Margaret. “The benefits of
any activity can only be measured by the individuals
response to them. The wellbeing benefits are the
benefits to those living with dementia. It is proven
to be essential to physical and mental health that
individuals engage in meaningful activities.
“At Sussex Support Services, we get to know each
individual and we do our best to engage them in
meaningful activities that provide them with the
opportunity for them to think, feel and do.
“Understanding what the individual can and cannot
do is vital to the success of any activity. If the activity
is too difficult, a person may become anxious or
frustrated. If the activity is too easy, the person may
feel unmotivated to take part.
“We provide the opportunity to join in with a selection
of arts/craft, encouraging service users to engage in
activities. They are often surprised and happy with
what they have been able to achieve and they do
this with the company of friends they make whist at
Victoria Pavilion.”
Benefits for everyone
Art therapies can improve lives by helping people
improve their mental, emotional, and even physical
states. It can raise the quality of life for many people,
and it’s worth considering if it can aid you in some
way or another.
Home art therapy
You don’t have to been in an organised setting to
experience the benefits of art therapies, either. This
is one of the reasons it is so accessible and popular
– it can be cheap to do, and you don’t need lots of
instruction – it is what you want it to be. Colouring
Again, maybe it’s just the act of executing creative
expression on your own or with others, or maybe it’s
seeking professional help. Either way, the benefits of
art therapy make it worth exploring as a catalyst for
healing.
UCKFIELD ROTARY
FEBRUARY UPDATE
By Jeff Holman
What a great result – you contributed £4131.32 to our pre-Christmas collections. £3749.74 was
collected under the tree and the sale of commemorative ribbons raised a further £381.53. This will
go into our Charity Fund, so if you know of a local good cause which needs support, please let us
know. Thank you very much.
The small committee who do such a wonderful job of
putting on the Mini Grand Prix in July was represented
at that meeting by Paul Page-Mitchell. The speaker
for the evening was Ed Cockill, from Uckfield Motor
Services, and this was fitting as he was a sponsor for
the Mini Grand Prix last year.
Looking forward, we are running a cookery
demonstration on Friday 17 February, at Buxted
Cricket Club, 2-00 to 4-00 pm. Under the title ‘The
Food of Asia’, the demonstration will be led by
Rotarian and chef Martin Doyle. There will be a
raffle, and tea and cake. What more could you want?
Tickets cost £10.00, and proceeds will go to Winston’s
Wish, the President’s charity for the year.
The Christmas collections are an important time for
us, and our thanks go to Fuller & Scott, whose back
room provided the base for our collectors and who
sold ribbons, and Gale & Woolgar, provider of the
festive music you hear in the High Street. The tree
has for many years stood outside NatWest Bank,
and, as always, we are grateful for their help through
December. Local company CJ Thorne have provided
the Christmas Tree since 1951, and provide help with
transporting it to its place in the High Street, so we
were pleased to welcome Richard Thorne to a Rotary
meeting a couple of weeks ago to thank him for that.
VALENTINE’S
DAY
By Kate Duggan
Ah Valentine’s Day. Beloved by couples, greeting cards companies and florists the world over. But
why do we give gifts and cards on February 14th?
Valentine’s Day actually started as a Christian day to
worship Saint Valentine, or rather St Valentines as
there were several. The main one associated with
Valentine’s Day was a priest in Rome, who is believed
to have been executed on February 14th, almost two
thousand years ago. Some historians believe that
his crime was performing the marriage of Christian
couples. The emperor at the time, Claudias II, was not
a fan of the church and had supposedly forbidden
people from marrying. It is said that he thought
young men would be less prepared to die in battle if
they had a wife at home to mourn them. Instead, he
encouraged them to take several lovers. Valentine
continued to perform marriage ceremonies in secret,
but was discovered and sentenced to death.
The story goes that Valentine healed the daughter
of one of his jailers, and, on the day of his execution,
left her a note, and signed ‘From your Valentine’. How
much of this actually happened, we’ll likely never
know.
St. Valentine’s Day started to be associated with love
around the 14th Century, when the idea of romantic
love gained popularity. Geoffrey Chaucer referred to
Valentine’s Day in The Parliament of Fowls, as a day
when birds would meet their mate.
A poem by the Duke of Orleans, which he wrote for
his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London
in 1415, is believed to be the oldest surviving
Valentine’s Day gift. The Duke wrote:
Je suis desja d’amour tanné
Ma tres doulce Valentinée
(I am already sick of love
My very gentle Valentine)
However, it wasn’t until many years later that the
giving of tokens of love on Valentine’s Day became
commonplace. In Victorian times, cards were hand
drawn, and hand cut. They would have been quite
expensive, so were cherished and many still survive
today.
While February 14th is the most popular date for
St. Valentine’s Day, the Eastern Orthodox Church
celebrates it on July 6th. Other cultures and countries
have different festivals to celebrate love. Columbia,
for example, has Dia de Amor y Amistad (Love
and Friendship Day) on September 20th. Unlike
Valentine’s Day, Dia de Amor y Amistad isn’t just
about romantic love, however. People might invite
friends over for dinner, and give small gifts to family
members.
Whether you’re celebrating with a loved one, heading
out with friends, or doing your best to ignore the day
PANCAKE DAY
This year Pancake Day is Tuesday 28th February.
By Susan Brookes-Morris
More traditionally known as Shrove Tuesday, this is the Christian feast day before Ash Wednesday,
which is the start of Lent. Lent is a time of sacrifice, so Pancake Day historically was the perfect time
to use up ingredients such as eggs and fats which are intrinsic to pancakes.
Historically Christians went to Church on Shrove
Tuesday to seek absolution, otherwise known as
shriving for their sins. So Shrove is taken from the
word Shrive. A bell would ring to call people to
confession and this became known as the Pancake
or Shriven Bell.
The date of Shrove Tuesday varies because it occurs
47 days before Easter Sunday which also alters year
on year based on cycles of the moon.
In the UK there are various traditions associated with
this day in addition to the eating of pancakes. These
include:
Pancake Races: - One of the most famous races
takes place in Olney in Buckinghamshire where is it
believed the idea of the contest originated. It is said
to be based on the story of a local woman who whilst
she was making pancakes, heard the Shriven Bell and
ran to church still wearing her apron and tossing her
pancake in a frying pan to prevent it from burning.
For this reason in Olney, racers must be local
housewives or men dressed as such and wear an
apron and a hat or scarf. During the 415 yard race
they have to toss their hot pancake at least three
times and the winner has to serve their pancake to
the bell ringer and be kissed by him.
Other variations of the race include the one held at
Westminster School, where the cook tosses a huge
pancake over a five metre bar in the playground and
boys try to catch the largest piece in order to get a
cash prize from the Dean.
From the twelfth century onwards, Shrove Tuesday
Football Games were played out in the streets and
often referred to as mob football. Nowadays only
a few games take place as highways legislation has
prohibited playing football on the road since 1835.
In Scarborough on Shrove Tuesday, it is customary
for a large skipping rope to be in place and for up to
ten people to be skipping at a time.
In some other countries, this date is known as Mardi
Gras and is marked by carnivals. These are still
linked to the concept of celebrating the last day of
‘fat eating’ or ‘gorging’ before the commencement
of Lent. The French translation of Mardi Gras is Fat
Tuesday.
with RON HILL
EAST HOATHLY BOXING DAY PRAM RACE
The event began in the Seventies and became part of
the area’s Christmas celebrations. It was abandoned
in the Eighties but some years ago, members of the
East Hoathly and Halland Carnival Society society
decided to revive it and proceeds go to charity.
VALENTINE ARTWORK AT KILNWOOD
A clear, bright, cold Boxing Day brought hundreds of
people to East Hoathly to watch an assorted stable of
vehicles race .
This year unfortunately the entrants were depleted
with only two racers due to many unforeseen
circumstances but so as not to disappoint the large
crowd gathered outside the Kings Head and along
the street the two entrants raced for the coveted
trophy. The racers wheeled out their prams for this
annual charity dash and went head to head on
Boxing Day in the East Hoathly and Halland pram
race.
The trophy was presented by race organiser Alice
Cottingham on behalf of East Hoathly and Halland
carnival Society to winner Tony Cottrill and team with
their Southern Rail “Pram”.
Over the last few weeks Lisa Todhunter and Teresa
Smith of Kilnwood Studio Uckfield have been
focusing on Valentine’s Day and Spring , hence the
heart theme in the window. People are invited to call
in and paint a pottery gift for their loved one ready to
present on 14 February.
Lisa has been busy painting the picture of a
woodland scene, with trees and flowers, hedgehogs,
squirrels and butterflies and not forgetting the main
characters the two love birds (owls) on the swing on
the window of the studio.
Lisa and Teresa said “We like to have the window
painted to attract attention. We aim to get the
message across that we offer a fun and enjoyable
pottery painting experience to people of all ages and
abilities.
UCKFIELD ROTARY CLUB SENIORS PARTY
WASSAILING AT OAST FARM BUXTED
Uckfield Rotary Club hosted an afternoon tea with
entertainment for local senior citizens at Uckfield
Community Technology College on Saturday 21st
January 2017.
Young people had key roles at the party. Some
ninety guests were entertained with splendid
singing and dancing by senior and junior members
of Universal Dance, led by Stephanie Kemp, then
joined in community singing led by Clive and Barbara
Cooper and Chris and Angela Wilkes. The tea was
prepared by Martin Doyle, helped by Uckfield Girl
Guides, and was served to guests by the guides and
by UCTC students. The raffle raised £230.00, which is
to be donated to the Children with Cancer Fund.
Rotary members were prominent on the day, serving
cups of tea and coffee regularly. Clive Cooper was
again a very accomplished Master of Ceremonies.
Many guests had been transported to and from
the college by Rotarians, while members and wives
had provided cakes. The club was also grateful to
Uckfield Lions Club for the use of their mini-bus for
transport.
Villagers and visitors joined Oast Farm owners Judith
and James Roberts and Liz and Bob Smith along with
staff for the second annual Wassailing at Oast Farm
Buxted on Sunday 22 January 2017.
The annual old English wassail tradition to toast the
farms orchard and ensure a good crop of apples
this coming autumn saw everyone greeted by
“Spirimawgus” who are a mixed border morris side
that originate from Turners Hill, West Sussex. . and
then the wassail King and Queens, local children ten
year olds Ronnie, Isobell and Evie, lead the singing
procession to the orchard ,singing and making lots of
noise, dancing around the apple trees
The wassail King and Queens were lifted up into
the boughs of the the oldest tree and the Rev Peter
Owen Jones who is the vicar of Firle, Glynde and
Beddingham, once again blessed the trees for a
wonderful harvest and to awake the cider apple trees
and scare away evil spirits to ensure a good harvest
of fruit in the Autumn. Bread soaked in Wassail was
then placed in the branches by the children as a gift
to the tree spirits.....It worked last year!!
Then it was back to the car park for more dancing,
singing and mulled apple juice, hot dogs sausage
rolls and apple cake.
FREE COURSE: THE INSIDERS’
GUIDE TO BRINGING UP
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL
NEEDS
Insiders’ Guide is a series of five parent support
courses focusing on what it means to be a
parent of a child with special needs. It aims to
build parents’ resilience so they are well placed
to enjoy the journey bringing up their children.
The courses offer a structure within which parents
can:
• Reflect on their experience by sharing and
exploring their travels so far
• Meet up with others in a similar situation to
celebrate the skills they have acquired along
the way
• Acquire information and learn new skills to cope
with the added demands of caring for their
• Map their needs and practise possible
strategies for building their skills and
strengthening their resolve to carry on.
Designed to promote partnership working, the
courses are intended to be co-facilitated by parents
and practitioners together, in order to draw on
parent expertise and experience and practitioner
skill and knowledge.
